I have the finest hair in the universe. If you ever wondered what kind of hair the child of two baby-fine-haired people would have, it's one with even finer hair. Thankfully, my hair is curly (think 1990s Alyssa Milano at her curliest), so it's not plastered flat against my head. ...Most of the time. Anyway, I'd been rocking an inverted bob for 5+ years and decided for a change. The thought of going for a subtle undercut-type cut (low fade, very smooth transitions) was knocking around in my skull for a while, but the thought was pushed to the forefront when the pandemic pushed me deep past the point of needing a trim. My previous cut was mid-December 2019 (the longest locks were hitting the bottom of my ears), and I was due for a cut by May. Of course, few places were open, and after too many horrible childhood experiences from the stylists at SuperCuts who seriously do not understand fine hair, I couldn't bear to try a random place just because they were open. Fast forward to late September and my hair is hitting my shoulders, any resemblance of body is gone, and I can put my hair in a ponytail for the first time in who knows how long. Because it's so fine, the longest locks are stretching down to a mild wave because it's just that frickin' fine. Ugh. The husband made his second-ever trip to Big Jim's--his first pro cut since February (I gave him two cuts (one was great and my beginner's luck ran out on the second) and he gave himself a #5 fukkit third cut), and despite being overly pleased himself, he chatted a bit about what I was after and made me an appointment for the next morning with Mrs. Big Jim (Leslie). I brought in a ton of photos (as one with curly, fine hair is trained to do) and chatted with Leslie about what I was after, then sat patiently (trying to side-eye the football on the TV in the opposite corner) while a whirl of different cutters went to town on my head. I'd never had a cut at a "barbershop", just various salons from the low-cost, low-quality of SuperCuts to the snob-nose Aveda, DevaCurl and similarly way-expensive places. Not having a mirror staring at me is AWESOME. What a relaxing experience to not be pulling (or fear of pulling) weird faces at any given moment during a cut. Love it. In the end, I got EXACTLY what I wanted and am excited to go back for a trim and to go more daring with the style (probably a high fade or mayyybe a classic fade). Can't wait! read more

I told what I wanted to Big Jim in like 2 sentences. (Fade on sides, beard trim with no curls at edges). The interesting part is, I didn't get to see what was going on, but trust me, he made sure he knew exactly I wanted. He got that I was kinda curious to know what was going on and made me comfortable and relaxed. After about 25 minutes, boom! I was so happy and looking much better with what exactly I wanted. I came by as a walk-in. I called in ahead of time to see if I could get my mohawk re-done, and they said they'd have barbers available. The guy that lined me up and gave me a cut, Frank, took his time and gave me a pretty clean cut. Pretty chill spot, interesting decor. I just wish they had more mirrors around so that I could see how well my hair was getting, and so that I can see my cut all around (the back and sides). It's cool though, damn good job. How do I even begin this... I came in after not having had my hair cut in three months. I sat down told Jim what I was going for and what I wanted for my beard. He asked a couple of questions about how I wear it, preferred lengths, then got busy. 30 minutes later he held up the mirror and to my surprise I felt instantly sexy. Dude.... these men know how to cut hair for sure. My husband and son only went to Big Jim's when we lived in Cali for one year. Santi was their barber, but they all do an awesome job. They are funny and laid back too, so you don't feel all weird going in to a barber shop if you're a lady and you bring your kid. They make everyone feel at home and everyone there is kinda like family. My men were never dissatisfied with their hair cuts. They do a good fade, or whatever else you want. I was very anxious to try out Big Jim's Barbershop for the first time. All the rave reviews made me even more excited. I got a cut from Steve and I regret that decision. The barbershop was packed when I first arrived. Three out of four of the barbers were already busy cutting hair (Steve was sitting in his chair with no customers) and three customers were sitting down waiting their turn as well. I walked towards one of the empty chairs as Steve says to me "Are you ready for a cut?" I wanted to wait for Jim, but none of the the reviews or ratings on Steve were bad, so I thought "Why the hell not." I sat down in Steve's barber chair and told him what I wanted to do with my hair. I was going for the Mad Men look, Don Draper type style. I am still growing the hair on the top, but the hair on the back of my neck was getting really bushy. My sideburns were long enough to tickle my ears. I just wanted a neat clean up. I even showed him a picture of what I wanted. After all was said and done I headed home and when I got a closer look of my haircut I was utterly disappointed and disgusted. STEVE COULD NOT EVEN DO A SIMPLE TAPER! The back of my hair was left choppy with distinguished lines. My hair was more jagged than Jaw's teeth. Freddy Krueger or Edward Scissorhands could have done way better BLINDFOLDED. Jim didn't give me a bad cut, but he didn't really listen to me either. I like my hair short, almost a military cut, and I walked out with something closer to a fade. My girlfriend said it was about an 85%. For what it's worth, the guys are really damn nice, nice enough to make me feel at home, and to make me feel bad now for giving a mediocre review. Maybe I'm spoiled. My small town barber back home gave a hell of a good hair cut, with all the touches like trimming stray hairs on the forehead and eyebrows, shaving the neck with a straight razor, etc. If this is a 4.5 star barber in the Bay Area then I've got a problem, because I expect more. read more

Jim treats me just the same as all his other customers, and gives me the cut I ask for. I wear a pompadour with a fade, and he's just an expert. Big Jim's Barber Shop is the spot. It's seriously like a real legit barbershop. I just moved up to the Bay Area last week in desperate need of a haircut. Decided to turn to Yelp to try to find a great place. After some browsing I came upon Big Jim's. They had me at the name. "Big Jim's?" How could I not give it a shot. (As if the perfect 5* rating wasn't enough.) And I'm glad I did because I have a new barber. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect. The place is place is tucked away in this normal looking shopping plaza. Walked in the door and suprised at how busy the place was a for a Saturday morning. (FYI: Saturday's are walk-in only, but you can make appointments for the weekdays.) Three dudes were getting their hair cut and there were already 6 people waiting in line! Normally I wouldn't even bother to wait that long for a haircut, but this place felt like the spot. The stereo was playing some old school jams and some more recent hip-hop stuff. Covering the walls are bumper stickers, flyers, San Jose Sharks flag, and a giant graffiti mural proclaiming this is BIG JIM'S BARBER SHOP! And the conversations are straight-up hillarious. GNR. Maybe they aren't always "appropriate," but there's a reason this is a men's barbershop and not a beauty salon. (As if the cold beers in the fridge and the Playboys in the bathroom weren't enough.) And Big Jim does good work! I'm really pleased with the haircut. He knows hair. The price ($17 not including tip) is a relatively high for a barbershop, but it's totally worth it. read more

Just walked into this place randomly not too long after I moved to the south bay (a couple years back). When it comes to getting a haircut in santa clara, this is the place for sure. I've made the mistake of going to a couple other shops in the area when these guys were closed or busy, but the truth is that nobody does it like Big Jim. I'd never really understood the appeal of having a 'regular' barber shop of my own until now, I'd just go to wherever was convenient/cheap... though I tend to get a pretty basic haircut so I figured it's hard to screw up. But these guys surprised me, they really take their time to clean it up even if you're just getting a basic fade or something, it's all about the details. And about the atmosphere, can't go wrong there either. There's always something good on TV or at least some good tunes playing, and good conversation. Even if I come in on a Saturday without an appointment, I don't mind just hanging out and enjoying the vibe for a while. read more

They totally deserve the recognition as the best barbershop in the South Bay, hands down. I can't add really anything more. I've been gettin my shape ups from Karvon for almost a year now and EVERY SINGLE TIME I come out with an exceptional haircut AND beard trim. I've never feel more fly then when I first leave that barber chair haha. Each one of these dudes is tops in the barbershop biz. Give them a chance and they wont let you down. 3 Stars for the ambience, maybe even 4. 1 star for the haircut. I was really looking forward to try this place given the good reviews. I have a fairly simple short cut and I wanted a quick trim, as I usually do once a month. I was seated almost immediately (just lucky, they don't make appointments on saturday), but the cut took almost an hour. That's officially the longest cut I've ever had, usually I'm out in 20 minutes, shampoo included (they don't shampoo here). I was quite curious to see the result (for the whole time the seat was not oriented toward a mirror). The result is ok, but the point is: my hair has been barely cut. Especially the top of the head is almost the same as when I walked in. Tomorrow or sometime this week i'll need to go somewhere else to cut my hair again, this time for real I hope. I'm really sorry about giving a bad review, I had a great time and the guys are nice. As they say themselves, they were barbers, but now live mostly from haircuts. If you go there, ask for Jim (I didn't) maybe you'll have better luck. read more

My usual shop was too busy and I was desperate for a cut so I headed down the street to Jim's. I've been to Big Jim's twice and neither time did I get the haircut I asked for. The barbers are friendly, atmosphere is okay but the cut on this last visit was bad enough that I felt compelled to write a review. I was a walk in on a Saturday and there was no wait, in hind sight that should have been an indicator. I believe the barber's name was Gladys (something with a G), black lady from Michigan. Very very nice woman but it became clear (all too late) that she is not an experience barber. If I had known that from the get go I would not have let her cut my hair but I also wouldn't be here giving a negative review....so maybe they should just let people know this ahead of time. I asked for a 1 1/2 with the grain on top, 1 fade medium on the sides. After a few passes with the grain she went against the grain on top destroying my waves and leaving the hair on top shorter than I wanted. At that point there was no going back. Took her about 40 minutes total for cut and line up. When she handed me the hand mirror to check the result I was rather stunned because it wasn't what I had asked for. The hair on top appeared shorter than the hair on the sides, the line up was far from crisp and there was no fade! It was essentially a bad light ceasar done in a wave ruining way. Big Jim did step in at the end and fixed the lineup but at that point I just wanted to be out of there since I had lunch plans. Based on other reviews I'm sure Big Jim's has some very capable barbers. Unfortunately two strikes is one too many when it comes to my hair and I will not be coming back here. read more
