I've never tasted BBQ as good as this. I'm talking pour-me-a-mug-of-that-sauce -- I'd drink it up, with a side of ribs ;-) Speaking of the ribs, tri-tip, and pulled pork -- divine. Yumyumyum. Big Jim's is going to be big! I see Food Network in his future. He's personable, engaging, clever and a god at the grill. So be sure to try his craft before he's so big and famous that you'll only see him on TV.

I took Big Jim's Course in January 2015. I enjoyed the course and I've made every recipe that he showcased. My one huge disappointment was that I paid $15 cash for his cookbook. It is almost July 2015 and I have not received my cookbook. I called Jim and emailed him multiple times, still no cookbook. That has left a very bad taste in my mouth about this course.

    BBQ Competition Class was amazing

We took the Competition BBQ class from Big Jim. It was amazing! From the very beginning Jim's Big personality comes out. He makes the learning interesting, understandable and amazingly delicious. He gets a good feel for his audience and can break it down just enough for all levels. Even those with crazy questions. He might look at you weird, but he will make it educational. The hours just fly by as does the delicious food. He hits on brisket, ribs, chicken, salmon, steak, pork shoulder and tri-tips. What more could you ask for? This is like no other class you can find. Oh yeah, let's not forget about eating the meats his cooks. Come hungry, bring some beverages, buy a book and be ready to learn things you never knew. Backyard BBQing will never be the same.

    Brisket sandwich, strawberry lemonade

Tasty bbq but very expensive and small portions. $20 for a small brisket sandwich, no sides, no sauce, just meat and a hamburger bun and a drink. I'd need two to be full but can't justify $40 for a brown bag lunch even if it tastes good.

Big Jim's at the Strawberry Festival!

Second, one table with three people in the restaurant at noon on a hot as hell Friday. I ordered a brisket sandwich with a potato salad. No fork, no napkin. Mediocre tasting sandwich with no bbq sauce. The potato salad was better. Not coming back and this is my second time. What was the first time like? Way better but still, not coming back. I was looking for somewhere to get my daughter dinner to pass the time while my younger daughter was in gymnastics at Flying Dutchman in Northgate mall. We had planned to go to ounces outdoors, but it was closed for a private event. Two of the three other options are Mexican restaurants and my spice-averse kid won't try Mexican food. So we gave Roadside bbq a try. I was particularly pleased that the kid's menu offered some alternatives to the standard chicken nuggets. She chose the kid's bbq ribs, which came in a just-right portion and was not spicy. I had a chicken sandwich, which was also portioned just right (not the usual huge fast casual portions) and was also mild (I wouldn't mind a little more seasoning, but it was fine). Prices were reasonable. Inside, there's a soft serve machine with a sign that says "free soft serve--ask for a cup." So we did after we ate and were given small cups for just right portions of soft serve. We had our dog with us, so were happy with the outdoor tables.

A couple of outdoor areas, some under shade with picnic tables. Located in Marin County, California, The Lodge in Fairfax is an iconic, historic establishment built in 1908 by the Arbini and Segale families as The Old Timer's Saloon, serving as the town's very first bar. After years of being utilized differently, the building underwent an extensive two-year restoration. The owners of the San Francisco bike shop Big Swingin' Cycles purchased the property, upgrading its infrastructure, adding a kitchen, and building a large, dog-friendly outdoor beer garden. You get that feeling that you really are at a lodge at the lake in Wisconsin. At least for a minute, it brings back memories. However, in place of the white and red pine trees are the gorgeous redwoods providing shade. Nice tap beer list with healthy portions served. I had the mushroom tacos, vegetarian style with a little salad and chips $10 and a half a beer. My lunch mate had the summer salad with chicken added $25 bucks which is a little steep, but certainly enough for two people. Served in a very large bowl. It's quite impressive. I would forgo the protein and save the six bucks extra. Great spot, great service, great ambience, great food, and beer. Walk, drive your car, or bicycle in. There are a bike racks and some parking on site.

We ordered two smash burgers: one with the included house-made chips and the other with a side of fries. I opted to skip the "special sauce" because I'm not a fan of Thousand Island dressing. The included pickles were also a little too sour for my taste. The burgers were delicious! The potato buns were soft, toppings were plentiful, and the 3-ounce size was perfect for lunch. This location in greater San Rafael is a bit out of my way, but a recent trip to Marin was an opportunity to make up for the lost. Located in a business center, parking here is not an issue and they were not particularly busy on a Sunday night. We were seated immediately, noticing how clean and modern the two-story gastropub looks. The food menu is more or less pub food, executed well. Mango-habanero wings were crispy and came with two dipping sauces, both delicious. We also tired the pretzel, which is on a smaller size, so next time I'll take our server's suggestion and order two. It also came with mustard and cheese for dipping. All their burgers are more or less a la carte: no fries, but chips and house pickle on the side. The burgers were fine though, with smash being smaller, but a bit tastier than their signature Monk's burger. Simplicity is sometimes the best. The beer list is expertly curated with focus on other styles besides IPA, but I assume that Russian River's Pliny the Elder and Blind Pig are always on the menu, in addition to ultra-local options. For pub fare, Monk's Kettle is a bit pricy, which is not totally unexpected in today's economy-especially knowing the area. However, elevated food, drinks, and service quality usually comes with the elevated price tag. We might not be back next time in Marin, but this was surely not the last visit to Monk's.
