Good Food at a Good Price We eat at this restaurant every other month for a lunch. We enjoy the food on the buffet. On 7-21-24, main entries were smothered pork chops, fried chicken and fried fish. Tried to eat here at noon on a Sunday while traveling thru the area, waitress ignored us for ten minutes while we walking past us complaining about the fact that we seated ourselves. However, there was no sign that said please wait to be seated and the clerk at the register was tending to patrons trying to pay to leave. But I found friendly waitresses and some of the most amazing flavorful fried fish I've ever had, and sweet tea that someone's grandma has perfected. Great home cooked country style cooking here. I f you are on your way through North Louisiana in I-20, skip the fast food chains and stop in Rayville at Big John's. They have a buffet with several main course dishes. Grilled pork chops, meatloaf, fried chicken livers and pot roast were on the buffet the day I stopped. Sides available like mashed potatoes, collard greens, smothered squash for quite a few choices. There is a decent salad bar and two desserts offered. All that and a drink for around $10 ! I've seen a few people order off the menu, but most everyone eats from the buffet. Choices include your typical southern fare: lots of vegetables cooked to death/covered in cheese, fried chicken/fried fish, and a couple of starches (potatoes and rice). I will never go there again. I went on my birthday with a friend. She got her order in just a few minutes. She ate her food and I still had yet to receive mine. An hour and 30 minutes later I find out that my order was not even given to the cook. Another waitress did that for me. I got a to-go plate since I was the only one who had not eaten. We tried this place on our way to meet my parents...looked forward to a real steakhouse only to find a less than mediocre fakehouse. The food was not up to par with boiled steaks and terrible atmosphere. The place smelled bad the the staff stared at us without smiling. Says that they open at 3:00 online. Showed up at 3:11 and the door was locked. I called and a girl answered the phone and said that they don't get there until 3:00 and open at 3:30. We waited in the parking lot until 3:39 and tried to go in again, only to still find that the door was locked. Meanwhile, throughout all of this someone turned on the flashing red open sign in the door but I guess it was only to get laughs out of watching us attempt to go in multiple times! Stopped in for lunch while on the road from Texas to Atlanta. Enjoyed the buffet - it's always good to get some actual vegetables (other than french fries) when on the road. Worst service I've had in a long time. Basically got an obligatory greeting, took our order, and seemed pained that we asked her what was on a Po'Boy. The cashier was just as rude when I paid out. The food was just okay-- I wonder if the cooks are nicer. I'd rather of had a hot dog at the gas station next door than felt conflicted between an obligated tip to probably the worst waitress ever vs feeling bad about not leaving a tip at all. I also want people to know that when I tried to leave a poor review on their Facebook page, it was almost immediately deleted. This little mom and pop restaurant was awesome! We were tempted to visit the Popeyes next door, but decided to give this place a try and I'm so glad we did! One plate was piled high with fried catfish and fries and another had a beautiful grilled shrimp salad, yum! It's 4 stars instead of 5 due to the food, the shrimp in particular. After being given the shrimp(which was a pretty big bowl, yay!) and scooping them onto the salad, there was a pretty big puddle of oil left behind. This was the only draw back, but it did not affect the taste or quality of the meal. Again, the food was super delicious and the atmosphere was comfortable and inviting. The waitresses are super friendly, and we get a "welcome back" now that we go there as often as we are in Rayville (and sometimes we only go to Rayville FOR Big Johns. lol) The potato and vegetables make it a HUGE meal and the salad bar is great appetizers but their "chili cheese fries" are without a doubt also to "die for"....
