It was my first time to Ollies and I was super excited. Started to fill my cart up, feeling the Christmas shopping bug and holiday spirit. Then I get to the rug section to look at a few rugs. A lady a few feet away from me kindly asked the young employee if he could help her look at a rug because it was under a pile. He looked at her like she asked him to dig to China on his day off, then he marched over and said, which one? I'll jut let you imagine his tone of voice. She showed him the rug and this is when I couldn't look away. He said, and I will quote almost exactly, " That is an ugly rug. You want that one, you actually like it? She said, "Well, I like the rug. He said, Whatever you want, but that's an extremely ugly rug. I couldn't help myself, so I had to ask if they knew each other. She said no. Shocked, I said, "If you were my son, I would give you a piece of my mind, you should never speak to a customer that way. A few men that were walking near me popped up and agreed with me. What a bitter miserable human being to want to speak to another person that way. He just smirked at us. I had to walk away because it was too crazy to confront any further. I said my piece. I was told there were no managers to speak with, so I am here. It's a shame, because I believe in giving businesses a chance to resolve issues on their own before going to the internet, but they don't care. I was super nice on the phone and told them I just need to make Ollies aware of the situation so that they could speak with the employee about his behavior or maybe he need to go home and sleep his anger off. Someone needs to have an adult conversation with that kid. Either that or he is trying to get fired or in a confrontation. I was born and raised in East Tennessee. People don't treat each other that way around here. That is what makes Knoxville so special. Okay, I have said my piece and hopefully Ollies brings up ethics and the importance of kindness in one of their meetings. It's the holidays people! P.S. Big fan of this store!…read more Now that I am a pensioner, stretching my dollar is vital to my budget. Before retirement, I had never considered going here. I guess my preconceived notions of what it might or might not be caused me to overlook this hidden gem. This store has a little bit of everything from groceries to housewares to games to party favors to cards to seasonal items -- just about everything you might want or need at only $1 each. I send a ton of cards: birthday, sympathy, thank you, contratulations, etc. At a regular store, even Walmart, five cards can bust your budget. Not so here. The cards are not castaways. They are Hallmark and other name brand cards, the likes of which would be found in other stores, BUT ... they are only $1 apiece. The employees here are friendly and helpful, the store has always been neatly blocked and stocked. The seasonal items are especially cool to look through (I got some cool Santa ornaments for only $1) Did I say "only $1"? You betcha. Try this out and you'll be hooked.

I was walking through the middle of the store and two employees were modifying some of the aisle shelving. I quietly interrupted them to ask directions to this particular item in the store. One of the employees, "Auburn" said he would be happy to take me to the exact aisle. He stopped what he was doing and walked to the rear of the store and showed me the correct aisle. He level of service was outstanding. It exceeded my expectations. Driving cross country, the interior of the van had gotten a little dirty and I needed a few bits to tidy. Today's stop in Knoxville included a broom, some window cleaner and some towels. I was able to brush out the bits and clean the surfaces. The van now looks great. The interior of the store is okay. There is some merchandise still to be put away and some trash on the floor needing sweeping. I did manage to find what I wanted and the checkout was pleasant. Overall, "OK." Not sure what that means...I had an issue with a product that caused an allergic reaction...went to EXCHANGE the one item for something else. Of course, the cashier couldn't comply as no receipt was available, so I asked for the manager. So-called manager, and I used the term MANAGER loosely, comes over...in her twenties with a NOSE ring in the front of her nose--not something on the side and inconspicuous. She was nasty to me and actually cut me off when I was stating my case. Obviously, the management grabbed someone off the street to fill the bill...no experience in customer service relations...as she would have been fired on the spot if she worked for my company. I know we're not talking Macy's, JC Penney's or whatnot, but to this day I chuckle when I see her standing under the sign that read MODEL STORE and can't help but wonder what stores that aren't MODEL stores have for personnel? Of course, I asked for the CEO's name and address and phone #. She gave me an 800# that of course contained so many menus that getting to the right department is almost impossible, necessitating several phone calls...NO OPTION TO SPEAK TO A LIVE PERSON ON THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS I TRIED. Even better yet, she said she didn't know the name of the CEO or President of the company that she works for...she's either a liar or more than likely, really doesn't take an interest who signs her paycheck each week...but I bet you she knows all about gaming, cell phone apps, etc. Best to stay away from laundry products unknown to you as my daughter almost died from allergic reactions to one.
