I've been through the ringer with my car, and I've only had it for 14 months and of that time its only been functioning for 6 months. I went through my claims company to get repairs done and was sent to PEP boys of San Leandro ca on E14th, by far the worst place to go to get anything done with insurance claim. My car literally sat at the pep boys for 3 month prior to taking it to Early here at Big O. Best customer service I've experienced dealing with repair. Early stayed in full communication and when my claims company dragged their feet, Early made sure to get the ball rolling for repairs instead letting my car sit like PEP BOYS of San Leandro did. The first time I went here to replace a slashed tire, they forgot to put my OIL CAP back on, causing my engine to seize. Came in after I had a tire blowout on the highway. I asked to replace all the tires with Michelin ones. They checked that they had them, and quoted me the price, and told me they'd call me to come back, or just come back at 5. They never called, so I showed up at 5, but they were closing, so they quickly checked me out. It was less then I expected. Meanwhile, they had put their no-name Big O tires on my car instead. I view auto repair the same way i view chinese restaurants: im willing to over look the service if the quality of the product is good. But the worksmanship at this place is questionable at best, and dangerous at worst. I went in to have my struts replaced. Said they would take a couple of hours. So 6.5 hours later, i went to go pick up my car. As soon as I drove it off the lot, I immediately start to hear rattling noises come from the passenger side strut assembly that wasn't there before. Planning on taking it to a different shop to get it looked at. Will update shortly. read more

Had my 2 cars serviced at this big O in Richmond recently. both experiences were fine. they did what they said they were going to do and didn't try to too aggressively upsell me for additional services. The folks I dealt with explained to me what they did clearly . It was also good that I was able to use a few Groupons to keep the price a little bit more reasonable. read more

I called for fleet service and they told me they had the tire in stock and to come down when I arrived they told me that nobody there knew had to do fleet billing and sent me away the most incompetent business I have ever dealt with I come here twice and left both times astonished by their incompetence read more

I'm not even going to bother with updating why I took 2 more stars away from my review. If you have any other option for your repair needs do that. Honestly it should have been 5 stars. 1. I've been here 3 times in the last 4 months and every time the service is quick, but every single time I was not told told my car was ready until I went to the counter to ask. Based on the printout time of the receipt my car had been ready 15 minutes plus. Not ok. 2. It's like an ice box in the waiting air. They need to heat the waiting area. Clearly customer service isn't the owners top concern. I'll be trying out different locations for sure. read more

Super shady place. Avoid the Berkeley location at all costs!! They are shady and liars. I stopped by the Berkeley location after reading good reviews to have the air in all 4 of tires checked. They told me they took all 4 tires off and cleaned up one of them that was low and charged me $35. No problem. Then they told me I only have 1mm of brake pad left on the front and rear brakes. I needed to have the front rotors replaced but the rear rotors were good enough to just be resurfaced and quoted me $664. I took my vehicle back 2 days later to have the brakes replaced and was told it would take 2 hours. 2 hours later I received a call to say the rear rotors were so rusted that they had to be replaced and the new cost would be $891. When I questioned them on how they didn't see this OBVIOUS rust 2 days ago when THEY HAD THE TIRES OFF and did the brake inspection that I never requested anyway they said that "sometimes you don't see things until you start." They somehow noticed the rusty rotors before they started but "must have missed it" 2 days ago. I now question whether they even checked the rear tires for a leak. That would explain such an egregious visual mistake. Essentially, they gave me a low quote for brakes when I didn't ask and then when I agreed to the service the price suddenly jumped $250?!?! Upon further discussion the manager, William told me his guy must have just missed the rear rotors during the inspection. He also refused to lower the labor costs by $100 due to their "mistake." Very poor customer service. I would think twice before getting anything other than an oil change here. read more

This place wrecked my car. I took it for a oil change and they 'accidently' put someone's old oil they had for recycling into my car, or they forgot to change my oil and filter even though I paid for it. I took the car in. They said a 1-2 hour wait and so I made my way to a nearby coffee shop. When I came back, they said the car is ready. My car is a Subaru so it takes more than 6 quarts (it takes 6.7 quarts) do I expected them to charge for 7. Instead they said it's the standard $30. I got kinda concerned so I used the dipstick and oil was dirty. At first they denied the oil is dirty. I insisted and asked them to show me their new oil. It was a new color completely. They then said it's because the dipstick has old oil. I drove around for 3 miles and came back and still dirty. They finally agreed that they had forgotten to do the oil change. read more

I've only had one experience at Big O Tires on San Pablo, but I can't say enough good things about the staff here. I'm a volunteer medical foster for rabbits. Yesterday one of my rabbits became very sick, and in the morning I took her to a rabbit vet Hayward. I was meant to return in the evening between 6-7 to pick up the bunny & meet with the veterinarian, but on the way my bff & I heard the car making an alarming sound when we tried to brake. I called Big O because it was the closest to my home, and Francesco answered. He said to bring it right in, and he would take care of us. When I walked in he took a flashlight over to look at the car brakes, and confirmed we needed new brake pads. He said he would do everything he could to help us out. Long story short, we called a family member to help us scoop up our rabbit. And we were able to pick up the car from Big O tires THE NEXT DAY at 10:00am, so we could travel freely to the veterinarian and back. Thank you Francesco, very much. read more

I had to wait in line a little longer because of covid but I don't mind that. Went in to set up an appointment for an alignment, the next morning and the current employee said it'll take about 2hrs because of the year of the car. Went in the next morning and guy over the counter spoke cold with only a few words and didn't even explain the steps of moving forward or to check out my car or if they needed anything else from me. I gave him the keys after he asked and he just walked out the door without saying anything. I followed for an estimate time and he said "well call you".........well I waited 2.5 hrs waiting for a call. Finally assumed they must be finished. Show up just for the same guy to say "I can't do anything, your tires are shot" "You will have to buy some tires first, $130 each tire" 1) The tires have plenty of tread, and the rear ones are new 2) it shouldn't affect the alignment 3) why didn't they tell Me before taking the car in? 4) why didn't they call me before? I personally feel my time was wasted Customer service was awful Don't contact this place, they don't seem to enjoy their work. Employees feel like dead zombies. Instead support a small business. I dropped my car off at 11 am on a saturday to get my flat tire repaired. They said it would be three hours and they cleaned se at 7pm. They said they would call me when it was ready. I never got a call but i came back at 6 pm to get my car. It had not been touched. So i was like is there a problem they said they could not find the locking lug key in my car. I came into Big O Tires only because I purchased a $100 discount coupon from Groupon that cost me $50 to purchase. I thought it possible to save $50. You figure you'll come out doing OK... but every tire I wanted to get was out of stock in my car's size. So I came back another day. Then the only tire to fit my car was a tire that wasn't that good a deal at its regular price, such that even with my $100 coupon I didn't get a great deal. Bottom line was that I spent two days and double the amount of time, only to end up with low-end tire that cost me as much as I would have paid going to my normal tire shop and getting a regular priced tire. I doubt I'll be going back the next time I need tires. read more

Night and Day DIFFERENCE!!! Amazing what new management can do to a place! The new manager obviously knows how to run a business. I came in for a simple alignment, thinking, "They can't mess this up." (Under previous management, I didn't get a few blocks away from the shop after a flat repair started to quickly go flat.) One of the best things was that there was no hard sell on ANY additional service. After signing the contract for alignment, I walked around to the service-bays to see mechanics diligently working on cars- work areas clean and organized. I thought sitting and waiting in Big O's waiting room might be better than just dropping off my car for the day. Free wi-fi, comfortable couches and I was good. I went back to the manager and asked for an oil change, on top of the alignment with a change of cabin air filters. Got out of there with a reasonable price and great, courteous and efficient service. I'd definitely return again!;) read more

A Big-o Tires employee in Berkeley stole my car registration and sticker, amongst other things, from the glove box of my car. Officer called me this morning with the registration and sticker. Called Big-O-Tires & that location was raided by the police this morning upon one of their mechanic's arrest. The service advisor told me it was safe to leave my car there because all of his mechanic's had been there for over seven years. When the management called me they said he had only been there for two weeks. I got a flat tire with a ton of stuff in my car from moving and need to check to see if anything else is missing. I just haven't opened those bins yet because moving has been overwhelming and I didn't think they would possibly steal anything. They cannot be trusted. Obviously they don't do criminal background checks for their employees, handling vulnerable people's property, in desperate situations in dealing with flat tires. I spent $1k on two tires and labor. Now I have to waste my time going to the police station and uncover my stolen property. read more

As a disclaimer, I shouldn't have gone to a store like this anyway and my experience was to be expected. Though to be clear I feel I was victimized. I came in for a flat tire repair, to which they stated I needed new tires. To be fair, I knew I needed new tires for months since there was maybe a few millimeters of thread left. I was presented with two options, either get their suggested Michelin tires or their in house Big O tires. However the caveat was that I could get the Michelin tires today, but that I'd have to wait a day for a complete set of in house tires. I chose the Michelin tires knowing that was the decision the worker wanted because I didn't want to wait, which set up a vulnerability for him to exploit. After three tires were put on my car, I was told that they didn't have the fourth tire. When I asked if somebody messed up the inventory, he coyly said oh maybe that's what happened. This leads me to believe he constructed a lie to push a sale. All he had to do was apologize and say that he or one of his coworkers made a mistake and even offer a discount for this error. At that point I scheduled an appointment the next day to replace the last tire. The last tire replacement surprisingly took the same amount of time that it took for the three tires the day before. However big O was busier the second day, so I'll give them that. After the fourth tire replacement, he said he'd give me a free alignment check of the axles, which is absurd since any decent mechanic that cares more about the person than the sale would check in this scenario anyway to solidify their reputation and retain me as a customer. He comes back with an electronic readout, showing my alignment really isn't that bad, but assumably played it so that I thought I needed it. He said he'd do the front axle alignment at half the price from $100 to $60. This makes sense since he was only doing the front axle, but I didn't trust him due to the earlier incident and declined the axle alignment. I'll be back for the included free flat tire patch ups, but apart from that I suggest going to a different shop. read more

I just moved to Alameda island from another state and needed an oil change in my Fiat 500. Fearing the worst I bought my own oil filter for $5 from Auto Zone. In Alameda I attempted to get an oil change, using my own filter. Cost was $85 at Oil Changers, and $80 at a place on Buena Vista and Grand Alameda who claimed they only used "imported" oil. I just returned from Big O - total cost with coupon (easily obtained via cell phone) was $42!! and this Included tire rotation! There was a little wait but a nifty restaurant serving breakfast two blocks away. Terrific Guys At Big O Berkeley. Love the place - I paid half of what it cost in Alameda AND got a free tire rotation. Go Big O. read more

I did a drop in today, just to get my tires rotated. The lot was totally full, they were really busy. James spotted a slow leak in my patched tire. He tried one patch, it didn't work, the. Worst experience around. Period. I was quoted and charged $30 on Sunday for a 19-pt inspection on a new car. I had to go back down and get a valid inspection because Pablo Mendoza couldn't completely fill it out on my original visit. He incorrectly wrote down my mileage 400+ when it was only 24, incorrect model of car, didn't sign or write in his name, or the state certification license number *and* over charged me $10. Speaking with Will, manager, he told me to come down for the fix. After coming in and speaking with him personally, he didn't even bother to offer giving me my money back for everything extra *I* had to do to complete a job I had originally paid them for and got an invalid and useless form. Terrible. Bought 4 tires & alignment and paid cash. Picked up the car but the steering wheel was crooked and alignment was off so I went back to have them fix it. They told me I never paid for alignment! Well I paid for it, but it did not show on the receipt so somebody pocketed the cash! Manager agreed to fix the car but didn't seem to care about the receipt problem. They did not give me a new receipt. Corporate doesn't care either. This place should be shut down. read more

I don't think much about tires unless one of them looks low or I'm caught with a flat (well, how about that?). In the best of times, it's a simple repair and in the worst of times, I'm looking at buying 4 new tires. In Greater Berkeley, this is a decent place to go to have all that done. Service is friendly, pricing is reasonable, the job is completed in a reasonable time, and the tyres have one of the better guarantees in the business. So babies, don't you panic..... More recently, I've gravitated over to Don's Tires on Gilman. The reasons vary from mechanic recommendations and the feeling that Don's better sticks to their knitting in terms of who they are, what services they're good at, and what else they're not trying to sell me. In fact, Gayle and I have had separate experiences with separate Big O Stores (this one and the old Martinez outpost for me, and Pleasant Hill for her) where the tire sale seemed like just the beginning of a larger car repair pitch. And to paraphrase Rocky Horror - By the light of the night when it all seems alright, I don't need a satanic mechanic (at a tire store). read more

They told me I needed repairs I didn't need. I bought a set of tires and went for an oil change. I was informed I needed a valve cover gasket and a power steering pump. As I had replaced the power steering pump I was suspicious. My new mechanic didn't think either was a problem. So I saved upwards of fifteen hundred dollars and will never go to Big O again. read more

BUYER BEWARE! Unethical business. My mother in law went in to get a leaky tire patched. they said that a faulty patch had been installed and "it can not be patched twice in the same place, you're going to need 4 new tires since you have an all wheel drive car. ". Blaming the faulty patch job on the previous shop. Only after I got involved and told them THEY were the ones that improperly applied the patch, did they find out they could miraculously patch the tire. If it wasn't for me, my mother in law would have "NEEDED to spend" $800 on tires, based on their "professional assessment.." I got in touch with regional manager, and he said "they mis-spoke".. LOL. Paid $100 for alignment . Took my car home still feels the wheel not straight. I brought it back to check again. They spend two hours and LOST MY KEY. Those front desk guys looks busy on few things but they never get it done . They keep looking for my key for like half hour . A lady walks in and say "this is not my key . I think this is some one's key. " THEY GAVE MY KEY TO WRONG PERSON , NO ONE EVEN NOTICE IT ! Another funny thing is after that lady drops the key on the desk , they still keep on looking for my key . They seems don't pay attention on what their work. And i ask that manager "is this my key. " She said "Oh, yeah. That's your key. And now I just need to look for you print out." I went in because my back right tire had a major tear. Needed to buy a new tire. Run flats, low profile. Gonna be expensive for my 2009 bmw535i. Once they told me it was going to be $375 I cringed and just accepted the fact and told me that they have to order it, and install it and will call me when it's done. That's gonna take like 6 hours. Around couple of hours has passed and they called back to tell me that I had a major crack in my factory installed rims. Okay I asked how much is it going to cost me? They said $700. I'm like no way. I asked if I can drive it around with the cracked rims with the new tire? And they said not a good idea. It's a safety issue and I needed to get it replaced right away from them. I told them are there any rim welders near by and they told me several places to go. So I gave them my final decision over the phone to wrap the new tire around the cracked rim that's on my back right tire and will think about getting the new rim or welded rim later. So I eventually get the car, paid for it and before I left the same person who was helping me out earlier told me again are sure you want to be driving around on some cracked rims? I said yes. He said okay get ready to put in some air everyday... so I go down 20 miles south to the rim welding location, they looked at it and told me the rim is fine and there was no cracks in it. Whoa. They are totally up selling me with fear (hard sell / safety issue?) at big o tires. I will never go there again. I lost all respect for them. Bringing my money somewhere else. read more

Realized my tire went flat this afternoon on my lunch break, it had a long nail/screw stuck in it, I called big o tires to see if they can fix it for me since I bought these tires from them (different location) back in April w/ warranty. Andre picked up my phone call really fast and tell me to go straight down there to discuss plan, he knew that I had to rush back to work since I only had an hour lunch, so they hurried up put on my spare tire so I could go back to work. I got off at 6pm drove back to them, Andre was already there outside waiting for me, Rafael, the technician who patched up my tire when I was working took about less than 15 mins to change the fixed tire back, put all the junk back in the trunk for me and checked all 4 tires pressure! Everything was covered by my warranty! I didn't pay a dime but the service was still amazing! Andre and Rafael were really nice, really helpful and did things really fast! I can't thank them enough for their help today and I hope everyone can see this review so they know how awesome they are! read more
