Their low fat yogurt is inedible. Rarely can I not eat something past a first bite. This was truly awful-salted caramel and heath bar flavors. Either it was spoiled or someone dropped a pound of salt into both flavors. On top of which, in this day and age, they accept only cash. Very strange requirement as they so kindly direct you to the nearest ATM. Regret having spent my money here. read more

It's a lovely location to stop, pick up an ice, find a bench and let time pass you by for a while. We were the only customers in the store, but we felt a little rushed to buy rather than take time to sample or choose an ice cream. I felt as if I had inconvenienced my server. They were not rude, it was just their mannerism. After giving me a couple of teaspoon samples (of which my party of 4 had to share), the server walked away and I had to ask for help again when choosing. There weren't any offers or suggestions coming from the server...actually, the conversation was pretty limited to our questions. Sadly, although the servings were generous, I found the ice creams to be too sweet, lacking flavour and overpriced for what it is. The lemon sorbet needed more lemon, the rum and raisin needed rum (I couldn't taste any). The pistachio was ok - creamy but not as good as what I've eaten elsewhere. The cherry was ok also. If I were to go back to Sag Harbour, I'd probably check out what else is on offer elsewhere. 2.5 stars read more

Big Olaf is a fond part of my childhood - summers in the Hamptons, swimming at the beach or a friend's pool, bbq dinners followed by an evening in Sag Harbor. There we would walk up and down the main street, window shopping, then grab an ice cream treat from Big Olaf before staring at the huge yachts that were docked at the wharf right next door. Now, of course, with the ridiculous popularity of the Hamptons, the scene has changed a bit. Olaf's, while still serving amazingly wonderful ice cream in so many different flavors (as well as soft serve, frozen yogurt, AND frozen custard) and continuing to make their waffle cones freshly each night (the smell drifts out and down the block...it tempts everyone who passes), has soured in its appeal. The quality of the ice cream, cones, and toppings is still the same and very abundant, but the LINE. Oh, the LINE! It does move, eventually, but the hoard of people outside gives me enough time to pause and ask if I really want to pay that much for a small cup of a flavor (but damn those servings are HUGE!) that I could buy at the supermarket for less and just as good quality. Also, with the summer crowds comes the sour server behind the counter; understandable, but not something I want to deal with as I order five different things for me and my family. The time to go is either early in the season (before the summer renters come) or after the Hampton Classic (when most people have to return to their jobs). However, those times are also when you are less inclined to go out for ice cream. But on occasion it is nice to relive my childhood joy of a waffle cone. read more

What a great place!! I was here last Sunday night and thought I had beat the weekend rush, but I was so wrong. That didn't really matter, because this is a great shop and you don't really feel like you're out in the Hamptons (except when you see prices...then you realize). I wanted to try the frozen yogurt, but went for the vanilla instead. It was some of the best vanilla ice cream I had ever tasted, and I like to consider myself a vanilla connoisseur. Even though the ice cream was great, the service was somewhat subpar, especially for the prices you're paying. First of all, there's no standard line forming procedure. Instead of making good use of space by winding around, the line is apparently supposed to go straight out the door (a fire hazard..). There were also people who got there after I did, but were served first, which I didn't quite understand. Visited on our way to montauk. HUGE scoops for your bucks. tons of toppings and mixins. Had to get the waffle cones, there were 3 or 4 types to chose from. OMG the smelI! *yum* interesting to watch them being made. Occupied the kids while we waited. Im plain vanilla but added a ton of mixins. I think they have ever candy bar. you pay just like everything else out there but def worth it. kids had the soft serve. hubbie did a float. not a loser in the bunch. I saw some monster sundaes being made. and they looked gooey and delicious. i'll have to return next day trip and maybe they'll have the chocolate waffle cones!!! Slightly concerned about COVID safety, as the small store was packed with maskless customers and employees. Addtionally, I found it to be a little too pricey particularly since the texture is a bit off (grainy). Went here over the weekend. I had read all the reviews and decided I need to try the freshly made waffle cones because yolo. Glad I did because it was delicious. The prices seemed moderately expensive but you pay a premium for the location which I felt was all right in this case because they pulled through. I got the mini waffle cone (which I recommend since its the normal cone size and you can save a dollar) with pistachio for $6. I loved seeing all the real pistachios in the ice cream and the flavor was great. I got single scoop and they give a pretty good sized serving. I was really happy with my ice cream. I can't wait to go back and try more. I wonder if they make it themselves? I also liked the location a lot. It was near the wharf kind of hidden away. I got my ice cream and then took it to the little windmill park nearby and sat on a bench overlooking the water. Super pretty and relaxing. My only suggestion to them would be to organize the line a little more when it gets crowded but it wasn't too bad when I was there. read more

I have been to many ice cream shops and this is one of the worst Ive ever been to. The location would imply an upscale experience- right on the dock in Sag Harbor. The store was dingy, dirty and not updated at all. The ice cream was just ok, the "freshly made" waffle cones were made maybe last week. The service was horrendous- the ice cream scoopers were surly and never cracked a smile! I never understand why a service business hires the laziest, surliest teens? Are these relatives?? Surely when you charge $17 for two medium ice creams you could hire someone who understands that ice cream is an experience, a special treat, a memory! BIG OLAF? BIG JOKE!! The young man employee with man bun (light brown hair, pale skin) is a BIG RUDE PROBLEMO. After rudely telling us to wait outside due to max capacity (there's a polite way to say ANYTHING) we finally got inside to place our lovely ice cream order. After a beautiful dinner at LULU in town, we came to Big Olaf and placed our order (rocky road ice cream on waffle cone+ a cup of blueberry crumble ice cream) and he prepared our order. This was our Night Out and we were excited to finally try Big Olaf, but boy did things take a Big Turn. As this young man was handing us our ice creams and we were handing him a credit card, he rudely, ABRUPTLY and LOUDLY stated, "WE'RE CASH ONLY! YOU'RE NOT GETTING ICE CREAM UNLESS YOU HAVE CASH !" --- and took the ice cream out of my boyfriend's hand. He didn't even give us a chance to get cash out of our pocket, or offer for us to get cash from a nearby cash machine. I suppose this young fellow was raised in a BARN because this is NOT how you treat people, this is how you treat ANIMALS. I looked at him in disbelief, and very nicely stated that a bit of signage regarding the cash only rule would be nice, and I also politely told him- "Sometimes, it's not what you say, it's HOW you say it in life." Honestly I'm not an ice-cream connoisseur, but I found the ice cream too sweet for me. The place is expensive. I was here about five years ago, and they used to have a trivia question of the day on a blackboard, and if you got it right, you won a free ice cream cone. The ice cream was okay. There definitely isn't anything special about this place at all. All I remember is that the person who was serving me was so rude and skimped on the toppings. Even when I called him out on it he still didn't give me more. He was very unpleasant. I mean, for the $60 I spent on four ice creams, I should be given a decent amount of toppings. A vide variety of flavors to choose from and they serve some of the creamiest and tastiest ice cream. I love the way this place looks from the outside: the ivy covered wall, the blue awnings that say, "Ice cream," and "Frozen Yogurt" but what is inside wasn't worth the money. I ordered a Kiddie size waffle cone of the Rocky Road ice cream. It tasted watery and lacked flavor. My husband had a small waffle cone with Mango sorbet, and it was "meh." Our two cones were $6 each, and honestly not worth it. I wanted to give this local spot a try, but here's the thing, along with the lackluster ice cream, was lack luster service. Wow! Yum-a-dum-dum, so good in my tum. During my annual trip out east for lunch and shoelaces, made a wrong turn and stumbled upon this hidden gem of a village known as Sag Harbor. Being a bonaFIDE lover of ice cream and all things Norwegian, I decided to see what the long line at Olaf's was all about. The line moved very quick, thanks to the apt, friendly counterpersons. I wasn't sure what to choose (so many choices), but the girl guided me to a cone of my liking after a brief discussion of my likes and dislikes. I settled upon a waffle cone with vanilla ice cream topped with Twix bits (love to eat the chocolate and caramel off then savor the cookie crunch, which the young lady suggested during our pre-cone brainstorming session). The ice cream was rich and creamy and bountiful. It seemed like there was a pint of ice cream on that cone. The cone tasted quite fresh and smelled nice. I wanted to personally thank Olaf, but, alas, he was nowhere to be found. Great day! Found a new (to me, most probably knew it was there) village with great ice cream AND still had plenty of money left over for shoelaces. GREAT bang for the buck!
