Hey, I don't do a lot of reviews, but I noticed Aaron's reviews were pretty dated and one said he was closed. Nay. Aaron is still there on Mission Gorge in Santee behind El Rancho Taco Shop, next door to a ladies' salon. There is a large metal storage container blocking the view of his shop from the street, and he doesn't have a sign, but he's there as of July 2021. This was my first haircut. I'm happy with it. Lot's of attention to detail as well as added perks like the shampoo/massage and hot lather straight razor finish. (I get real quiet whenever anyone whips out the razor.) Aaron did not nick me at all. I did not understand a lot of what he said. I have noticed that as I age, it takes my brain a bit longer to calibrate to some accents. But I can tell you he has a great attitude and a great work ethic. Good barbers are hard to find. I'll be back. read more

I've been going here for two years and always enjoy "the experience." Sure, the place physically could use a remodeling/facelift/upgrade, but the service and haircuts are excellent and only about $9. Aaron (from Vietnam) is the gentleman who cuts my hair and he is a delight; I've never heard anyone laugh as much as him. This guy definitely has "good energy" and an abundance of it. He's quite the character... There's plenty of reading material, too, if you have to wait. (I've never had more than one guy ahead of me, though...) Also, next door is a nail salon, so if you bring your wife or girlfriend, she can get her nails, etc., done while you're busy... Located: Just east of the Omlette Factory. I've been getting my haircut from Aaron for almost 10 years! Now my son and I go once a month for haircuts. I've been to other shops when he was closed and always end up disappointed not because the other shop was terrible, it's just Aaron's attention to detail/experience is unmatched. He is a very skilled baber that provides a great haircut, uses a straight Razer with warm foam to clean up the edges and finishes off the experience with a hot towel head massage that feels amazing! 1st time customer. I was looking for someplace close to home in Santee and I found this place called Big Rock barber shop 8003 Mission Gorge Rd. I went in today 3/16/22 about 10:15 AM on a Wednesday. Nobody ahead of me so I was seated right away. Aaron not only cuts my hair, he washes it, puts a hot towel over my head, then back to the barber chair for more trimming, another hot towel on the face and head which is very soothing and then a chair massage with one of those hand held shoulder/neck massage devices. Very relaxing and Aaron spends a long time getting the hair cut right. He mixes up a hot solution and uses a razor to shave around my ears and down my neck for a clean look. $20 is more than worth it. He only charge me $15 because it was my 1st time. Aaron likes to laugh and is a very likable fellow and excellent barber. I will return to this place. P.S. It's located right behind my favorite Mexican food place El Rancho so now I will pick up some tasty Mexican food after my haircut. read more

Aaron is my barber. He's my only barber - effective about six months ago - and I'm no longer interested in you other barbers. Sorry, guys. Aaron runs a fantastic BARBER shop. The haircuts are well done, thorough, and inclusive of all the pleasantries that you expect when skipping Supercuts, Fanny Sams, etc. He'll bust out the straight (shavette) razor to keep your ears, wolf neck and unibrow in check. He'll pay very close attention around your beard/facial hair, ensuring that you look even better lined up than when you came in. He'll hot towel ya at the end, and he'll run this amazing massage tool over your neck and head. By the way, as someone who frequents Massage Thai Way (see other reviews), I thought I'd give Aaron a shot at a quick massage. It's not Thai, but it's terrific. But let me tell you a story... He only accepts cash now, as it was taking too long for him to get paid by Square. But I didn't know that until I finished a haircut and had no cash a few months ago. Aaron says, "Don't worry - you can pay next time." He was serious. He patted me on the back and started walking me out. I insisted that he be paid for his excellent work, and went to the liquor store ATM a few doors down. I came back, paid him double, asked for his business number (which is on his iPhone), and have since texted him once every four weeks to line up my haircut. Aaron is the man. read more

Aaron saved my face. I got the worst razor burn and couldn't shave for over a week. When I came to big rock Aaron knew what to do... Hot towels, skin conditioners, and a nice clean straight razor, followed by a mud mask facial. He finished up by appling some tea tree oils. Within 24 hours my skin was so clean, and clear. In my line of work I need to look good and he did the trick. read more

I can not write a review for a haircut yet... But I did stop by for a facial shave. And holy crap. I've only had a couple shaves in my life. At couple different places. Aaron actually uses a straight razor. I've had barbers run an electric razor over my face, that's it, and charge me 10-12 bucks. But every time I thought he was done, he would then is a different oil, cream, or gel to deal with the fact that my skin gets EASILY irritated. I started coming here about a year ago after I moved to the San Carlos area. I picked it because of the good reviews here on Yelp and I can confirm that Aaron gives me a great haircut every time I've been in here. He takes his time, listens, and does it right. The only potential issue with Big Rock is that it's a one-man operation, so if there are 1-2 people waiting in front of you you'll have a pretty good wait. The key is to find a time when it's not busy so you can get in and out pretty quickly. read more

Best straight razor cut ever! I came in on a Sunday around noon and there was only one gentleman ahead of me, already in the chair and almost finished. I sat down and the barber went to work after double checking that I wanted my goatee shaved off and my dome shaved as well. Hot towels, warm shaving cream and a delicate, but thorough shave! After the shave, he treated my skin with a skin mask over my face and head and topped it all off with a hot towel massage - all for $35!! I told him that I would be back and I meant it. Some other barbers in the area may be a bit cheaper (or a lot more expensive), but the couple of bucks more is well worth getting a haircut the way you want it, not the way the barber wants it even after asking you. I've never had a good or even decent hair cut my whole adult life. I've spent hundreds of dollars on mediocre, sub-par, generic haircuts by all the cookie cutter hair shops and the fancy upscale joints. Money spent on crappy customer service, and glamorous decor that is only used to make you feel good about paying money for garbage. NEVER AGAIN. I read the reviews here for Big Rock and had to find out for myself if Aaron would live up to the hype. He EXCEEDED all exceptions. The average male hair cut is 15-25$, and as stated before, usually by a disgruntled employee who sees you as just another head of hair to cut. Aaron not only treated me with a genuine kindness and respect but approached the hair cut as art. Every head of hair is unique with its quirks and shape and Aaron takes all the time necessary to produce the best product for the individual. He gave me the best haircut I've ever had. He shampooed, massaged, and shaved my face (with a straight razor). He cut my hair similar to David Beckhams (the soccer player) cleaned up my neck, around my ears, my nose, and my eyebrows with a straight razor. He never used clippers!! All this for under $30!! Aaron is a magician. You better believe I tipped him well. It will be a sad day for hair if Aaron ever decides to leave the business. read more
