Long story short about me: I love the idea of tattoos and always have, I want many, and I have a very low tolerance for pain. So it's like wanting something that will always hurt you but ends up being beautiful and good in the end. Back to No Name and, to a greater extent, Roxy the tattoo artist there. Flawless? Amazing? Intelligent? Understanding? Calming? Funny? Clever? Inspirational? A GREAT TATTOO ARTIST??? I mean yea true but all of these don't even get me started on how this awesome woman, who always has a fun color or style to her hair (yesterday it was a nice pink!), has made getting tattoos for me... something I could handle. Especially after having a HORRIBLE tattoo artist ruin my arm and first tattoo for me for almost 1.5 years. I went to Hawaii (thanks Dad!) in April 2019 and got a small sea turtle on my right wrist as my first tattoo. I added to it May 2019 at Marked Marvels (no..... comment........) and that was a complete disaster. I got 2 more turtles and they weren't anything like I wanted. I ended up never going back there and hated my arm for 1.5 years. August 2020. Missed one appointment and was late I'm sure to another. But Roxy got me in and added my 4th turtle and added waves and then redesigned the previous 3 turtles to match. It became a stunning and elegant tattoo and I could finally look at my arm again and not cringe or be sad!! This was good customer service! She listen to the issues I had with the previous tattoo guy in the past. She understood my low pain tolerance and did all she could to make it as easy as can be. She's funny and lighthearted and it feels like more then some hair stylist who wants to know drama. She wants to know how one of her clients are doing. She's also wildly and insanely interesting and I love that she and I both enjoy a good and long vacation/trip away to other places! She is endlessly dynamic. But so is the place she works for/at and everyone who works there too. I've been there maybe 5-6 times in total for my 2 tattoo sessions and then a few other visits for consults and for upcoming stuff. This place is great. I never used the bathroom there till yesterday (3/03/2021) and... um.... SPOTLESS???? It actually smelled good...? Like a bathroom at someone's private home!!! Also HILARIOUS???? The wall art and home decor is wild. The way they present themselves. The knowledge they all know. The kindness and calmness. The attention to detail and an idea that ANYONE and EVERYONE they work with deserves a good service. Roxy is flawless. No Name Tattoo is a cute and small shop in the middle of downtown Utica and it fits right in. I love each and every session with her. Even the worst session I could ever experience with her wouldn't even ever compare to the issues I had at MM. That's information for a more negative review on their artist and place though. But for Roxy & No Name, the bar is set so high you'd think it reached a new galaxy. Imagine you're a tattoo artist and you've only done 2 sessions on/for someone but they tell you they want you to do their tattoos for the rest of your career or their life, whatever comes first. That's me with Roxy and I'm not joking at all. I told her that. The look in her eyes made my heart soar cause I truly found someone whose given me some of THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED. Better then doctors or other tattoo shops or food places. Better then them all. I truly can't wait to visit in 3 weeks for my newest tattoo's follow up. I got my conch pierced here and it ended up becoming embedded in my ear. When I came back because I was worried about it, they tried to push the jewelry back through my swollen ear to get it out. They were extremely aggressive with it, and it was honestly one of the most painful experiences I've had. My ear was bleeding and extremely swollen afterward, and they still weren't able to get it out. I ended up having to go to urgent care right after. Even the doctor who treated me commented on how much trauma had been done to my ear from them trying to force the piercing out. I was already scared about what was happening, and the way it was handled at the shop made the situation so much worse. What really threw me off was that afterward they called and offered me a free piercing. After everything that happened, getting another piercing there is the last thing I would want.I understand that complications can happen with any piercing, and I'm not leaving this review just because mine had a problem. I'm leaving it because of how the problem was handled once I came back for help. I wish they would have recognized when it was beyond what they could safely handle instead of continuing to force it and causing even more trauma to my ear. Unfortunately, I would not come back here for another piercing after this experience.

Every morning I see the tattoo Mark Heggie created for me, and every morning I love it more. Not only that, it makes me want more tattoos, and has given me more appreciation of the art form. I had 2 tattoos before I went to Big Top, but they weren't at all "Serious." They were simple things, executed OK at best--they were just tattoos, I never thought of them as ART. But someone close to me passed away, and I really wanted to get a memorial tattoo. Not just something, not just a tattoo, but ART. Something I could truly be proud of So I called around to some of the more famous shops around, and got some positively ridiculous quotes--you know how they say the word "Wedding" increases the price of everything it's related to? Well I wonder if Memorial has the same quality for tattoos as "Wedding" does for tablecloth rental. Anyway, enter a friend who suggested I contact Mark. He listened carefully to what I wanted, gave me good feedback and sketched out something that was just what I saw in my head, which he did for an excellent, fair price. My visit to the shop was great--Mark and everyone else was very nice, very accommodating and positive, and the shop was spotless--you could tell that taking good care of customers and keeping everything ship shape was a major priority for everyone. Mark was also hilarious and awesome. He handled a last-minute adjustment to the design without any trouble, and did a great job while being personable and fun and putting up with my "haven't gotten a tattoo in like 10 years" new-ness. And the final product blows me away to this day. And so every morning, I look at my tattoo in the mirror. Mostly I remember the loss. But I also remember what Mark did for me. Here's the thing--like I said, before I had some standard boring tattoos. Some basically competent, but completely average, ink. But now I have a piece of beautiful art. And it makes me want more. It makes me want to see what Mark can do to cover up one of my old pieces that has aged really badly, and it makes me think of interesting new designs. Having a real, artistic tattoo done by an actual artist was huge for me. Thank you. read more

I went to Mark Heggi on a reference from a friend who had a sleeve done by him. I have a couple tattoos which I wasn't entirely happy with and didn't really know what I wanted, but wanted something to draw the eyes away from the bad ink I got when I was younger. Met with Mark in Sept 2013 and discussed ideas and set up my first sitting in January 2014. I just had my third sitting last night and have one more in August before my tattoo will be completed. All I can say is AMAZING! My tattoo has exceeded my wishes and couldn't be happier. All of the guys in the shop are extremely friendly and helpful including Joe, Dan and Josh. During my sitting last night (4 hours by the way), I watched several people come in who wanted tattoos done. I have made the mistake before of pushing the artist do to "what I wanted" and not what "they recommend". BIG MISTAKE. While you might like the tattoo in the present, over time you will hate it because exactly what the artist is telling you is true. If you want a good tattoo, I highly recommend Big Top or Signature. These guys are professionals and this is what they do. You won't go to a brain surgeon and tell him what to do during your operation, so treat these guys the same way. They only want you to get the best tattoo possible and if its going to look like crap over time, they are going to tell you. I high appreciate the honesty and knowledge. How would you feel if someone came to your job, who wasn't even in your line of work and told you how to do your job better. It's the same thing here. I will be going back for more ink from these guys and have friends and even my wife getting inked soon by them!!! read more

Maggie must have gone to a hack joint down the road from Big Top, because in all my visits there, I've never had a bad experience. I did a great deal of research before ever getting a tattoo, and in 2008 at 28 yrs of age, my findings led me to the creative genius of artist Mark Heggie. Of the three artists featured at the shoppe, Mark, Dan Rick, and Garth Hixon, you honestly can't go wrong. They are a custom shoppe, and the said artists render amazing epidermal etchings. Like most great establishments, the tattoo's do all the marketing/advertising they need. Whether you have a specific piece in mind you want done, or if you're kicking around ideas of a couple things you need some artistic insight/vision/development on, the guys at Big Top will far surpass your expectation's.....as they did mine. Let me just clear this up. This place is the one and only place I will ever go. I got an entire sleeve done by Loaf and it was the best decision I've ever made. His work is absolutely incredible, and he is a dream to work with. To be perfectly honest I was super bummed out when we finished it because it meant not having a reason to come into the shop! The place is awesome, the people are a fricking blast to be around, and there's no better environment. All the work that comes out of this shop is legitimate. Previously, a tattoo virgin, I searched hi and low for an tattoo artist in the metropolitan area from Clinton, Twp, Westland, Detroit, Rochester, and finally Utica, Mi. I had a design in mind and took it to all I visited for their artistic input, but all I received were patterns from previous designs. Then I found Big Top Tattoo in my own backyard. I took my design to a person, I had no idea which this person was one of the owners... He immediately gave me his opinion that what I had designed, was too busy and should be simplified. We clicked immediately on the changes based on his hand drawings and concepts. I am pleased he took the time to both design and tattooed me. I went into Big Top without knowing exactly what I wanted - just that I wanted a 2nd tattoo. Most artists would be annoyed with my indecisive tendencies and tell me to come back when I've made up my mind... and rightfully so..... HOWEVER Mark Heggie took the time to show me a bunch of designs and at the end of the day gave me one stellar tattoo on my back. I had work done by Joe 2 days ago, a memorial tattoo on my back, which also served to cover up two older tattoos. I really can't speak highly enough about this place. The coloring and shading on my new one is amazing, and there isn't a trace of the old two there. Anyone I spoke to while there was friendly and made me feel very comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised at the reasonable price as well. I will definitely be going to see Joe again for more work. Great place for GREAT tattoos! I've been going to Mark Heggie for over 10 years, and his work is better each time I go back. This a custom tattoo shop, with real artists, so if you want quarter size infinity symbol on your ankle, it might be a little pricier there than others. But, it will be a really nice one. I would, and do refer anybody looking to get tattooed, to go to Big Top. All of the work that I've seen come out of there has been top notch!. I've gotten two tattoos here after having two done elsewhere. This shop is by far my favorite and will continue to be the place I go to. Staff is very creative and attentive, Tessa and Nadja are absolutely incredible at their craft. I've always been given an appointment in a timely and fair spot. I had a tattoo done on my side by Joey Gonyea. I was a walk in with only a couple of pictures. Joey took the time to help me figure out exactly what I wanted. He drew it, we edited it, and he would make the changes and draw it again. He was so patient and helpful. I wanted a tribal design that was in the shape of half of a heart and what I got was a masterpiece. The tattoo is a pure work of art with delicate details that are amazing. Great shop great folks there. Some of the work is on the $ side, but totally worth every penny. They don't charge you an outrageous amount for junk.Very clean and comfortable. I've had three of my four tattoos done at Big Top. The only reason my fourth wasn't done by them was because I was away and school and it turned out that the other artist who did my fourth knew and did work on Dan Rick. Heggie did my first and Dan did my other two. I've recommended tons of people to them and everyone comes out happy. While I can say they did take time out of my session to eat their food, but guys gotta eat when they're busy. Their prices are fair as well. read more

Couldn't be happier! Davey James did an impeccable job on mine and my friend's first tattoo. I brought in a picture of what I wanted and told him about a few adjustments I wanted to make and he drew it out exactly as I imagined. He was very gentle and a pleasure to talk to. Hands down best tattoo experience I've had so far. If you come here at night, you might think you're walking into a punk/metal club. The decor in each booth shows off the personality of the artists. But, don't freak at the skulls and horror movie statues: these are some of the coolest people you'll ever meet. Assuming you're here for a tattoo, your first stop will be looking at the books by artists here so you can see what kind of work they do. Some of the artwork is so beautiful and elaborate that you could make a print and hang it in a museum. The guy who did my work was Matt Black. We exchanged texts with my sketch of the design I wanted, and his ideas for how it would work. After seeing his work in the book, I shouldn't have been surprised, but the artwork he did was beautiful. I couldn't have imagined that my crude sketch would turn into something so impressive. I just got back from Las Vegas, where a tattoo parlor wanted to charge $250 for an hour of work; this was a place rated as a $$ price, which is crazy. The people out there are no better than the people here. Matt did my tattoo in about 2 hours, and it cost $250. Don't feel like you have to spend a fortune on a tattoo, and definitely don't go to a cheap place to save a few bucks. Eternal Tatoos will give you art that will stand the test of time.

Unfortunately, today's experience completely changed my opinion. Ben had to cancel our appointment because the shop was having HVAC issues, which I completely understood. I wasn't upset about the cancellation at all. I simply called afterward to ask if there was another appointment available later that day because my daughter is leaving tomorrow morning and we were hoping we could still get our tattoos. Instead of simply saying there wasn't another available time, I was met with a rude and confrontational attitude. He immediately brought up past rescheduled appointments and spoke to me as though I had done something wrong just for asking if another time was available. The tone of the conversation was completely unnecessary and unprofessional. Afterward, he sent me text messages claiming I had canceled "8 or 9 times" over the past year, which I strongly disagree with. I apologized for any inconvenience my past reschedules may have caused and explained that I wasn't calling to complain--I was only asking if there was another available appointment. When I asked about the $100 deposit I had left with him, he told me he intended to keep it because of those alleged cancellations. We had never agreed that my deposit would be forfeited under those circumstances. Rather than continue arguing, I simply replied, "Keep it with you. No problem." What disappointed me wasn't the $100. It was being spoken to with disrespect after years of being a loyal customer. I had trusted Ben with my sleeve, always paid my appointments, tipped well, and recommended him to many people. Despite that history, he ended our conversation by telling me to "have the day you deserve," followed by "Having a great day so far ." Ben is a talented artist, but professionalism and respect matter just as much as talent. Sadly, after today's experience, I will not be returning, and I can no longer recommend his business.

Have gotten three piercings so far, lobes and two helixes…read more Garrett was very informative and helpful in explaining how everything would go, what and why he was doing things, and asking clarifying questions and made sure I was not unsure in any way. Also talked directly to me about my piercing even when I was still a minor and thus had a parent with me who was paying lol. Placement was excellent, and they've all healed up great.
