Tree selection was pretty sparse yesterday, but fair enough, it's less than a week before Christmas. I did think the remaining trees might be discounted by this time, but no. Trees are not cheap, probably average for the area (we didn't look anywhere else because it was 8 o'clock at night). If you need a tree over $250 there are many to choose from, if you want something under $100 go elsewhere. The younger guy was very nice and helpful. The older guy, who I assume is Dave, seems knowledgeable but also grumpy and is not helpful. I walked up to the counter and started to ask him a question, I got as far as "hi, how much are..." when he answered his cell phone (without acknowledging me at all). The person on the other end (he put him on speaker) said he was sending a family by for a tree, they should be there around 8:50pm (they close at 9pm). Dave let our a long, loud, sigh and hung up. Other than eventually answering my question about pricing for the cute little reindeer, he didn't make eye contact or speak to us once during the entire sales transaction, other than stating the total due. Maybe he was having a rough day (holiday retail sales certainly isn't a beach club in Bali). But when I commented to my partner on how annoyed he seemed, he said, "He was the same last year, remember?". Seems a strange line of work for someone who seems to not like kids, dogs, or customers. (Maybe he's incognito spy Santa with an elaborate cover story?) read more

I was apprehensive due to the negative comments. Kept an eye out for the "mean Dave" Just went to another place, then last min decided to also go to Dave's place (i have a toddler so wanted to get her in the halloween spirit). The other place had a corn maze which was nice but the service, prices, and Dave were all great. I got a pumpkin that would have been $50 at the other place for $20 (it's huge) and Dave was nice w a lot of good suggestions. Not sure why he got such a bad rep. Ugh, wow Please please please do not come here if you want to walk away happy and full of cheer... I came in a super good mood, always look forward to picking put a tree. The younger gentleman who helped us pick the tree was awesome and friendly, but the older cashier guy was TERRIBLE. Yelled at him right in front of everyone about one of the tree stands that was already mounted on a tree. i can't believe they have someone who treats other workers so rudely on staff... and now that I've read other reviews it looks like they just keep hiring the guy. His tone and demeanor was just so mean and angry about something really very small and simple (and of a $7 value), he completely ruined my night and the whole experience (usually one of my faveorite of the holidays). If it had been solely up to me I would have walked away and not given them a dime. I'll never be coming here again. read more

NEVER ago here. This guy has pushed me to leave my first ever negative Yelp review. Went to this tree lot yesterday. A very nice young guy helped me with my tree and was showing me some garland. I asked if there was more. He called out to Dave in the back who came out with a roll of 75 feet. Since I needed 45 feet and the small piece was only 27, I requested they cut mine from the large piece so I could have a continuous piece. Again I bought a whopping 45 feet. He was so rude to me throwing down the clippers and huffing and puffing and saying rude things under his breath. Then I asked if he'd cut the string holding a handful of wreaths together so I could get a few. He was so mean about it. Meanwhile the nice young man put my tree, garland and 3 wreaths in my car and Dave rang me up. Owning a small vintage shop in SB and knowing how hard it is to survive financially here, I never asked for one discount on any of the items. Total was $281.66. I said how about 280 cash. He said Price is 281.66. So I had to go to my car and get a $20 out bill out for 1.66 after not one tiny break on any of the things. I never would have done that to one of my customers. In fact, I would have definitely extended a nice discount on a big order like that. I had some unkind words with him and told him I'd never return. I literally cried on the way home because he was so rude to me. What miserable guy and during the holidays, no less. The ONLY reason I didn't throw it all out of my car and drive off was because his young helper was nice. Anyway, stay clear of this place. Doesn't deserve the 1 star I'm forced to leave. read more

If this is all Dave does for a living you'd think he would have "customer service" down to perfection. Mr.Grinch should at a bare minimum greet customers and be attentive. All he does is stand behind the cashier with a grumpy face as if paying customers are not worth his time. La Cumbre plaza should stop leasing space to this guy. He sets up for Christmas to sell trees too in December. Same experience last year when we bought our Christmas tree from him. Don't waste your time or money here, just go to the big chain stores. Or head over to the pumpkin patch off turnpike, you'll have a much better family outing there. read more

Just called and a rude person answered the phone saying It's Dave I asked if he had any Christmas trees up for sale right now he stopped me half way and said no it's after Black Friday and hanged up. DAM someone not having a good day or they not in the spirit to sell some Christmas trees. I'll take my money somewhere else. read more

The only good thing about this place was the tree for a decent price. As for Customer Service, the guy that helped me was very nice and very helpful. I will keep him anonymous as to not embarrass him further. While he was helping me bring the tree to put a stand on it, an older man named Mike (also an employee)started yelling at him and telling him he was doing a bad job and degrating him in front of at least 12 customers. I could not believe how rude and disrespectful he was toward this poor employee! Even my 8 year old daughter said that it was super embarrassing. The worst part was after I left. I called the owner (Dave) and he brushed it off and said that everyone is under a lot of pressure and Mike has a broken finger. There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE to treat your employees in such a rude manner, ESPECIALLY in front of paying customers!! This is unacceptable and for this reason, I will not return to this business. I would rather go somewhere that respects and supports their employees. read more

We had the most awful rude experience This morning. The younger man who helped us choose the tree was really nice and helpful. The man on the till was SO rude and just plain angry and defensive. He over charged us and when we pointed it out to him politely, he literally took out a five dollar bill and slammed it on the desk. His demeanour was intimidating. Not the face for Christmas. If your job makes you this grumpy, give it up and do something non customer facing. Will Not be back. read more

Conveniently located in the La Cumbra shopping mall, my friends and I decided to pick or our Christmas tree here. The trees are priced to market, so if you're looking for a cheap tree you should probably search elsewhere. They have many types of trees in all sizes. You'll find the perfect tree for you house/office/wherever. They also have adorable little Rudolph's handmade of wood from a guy up in Oregon. Only $25 bucks, how could we pass it up? The guys working there are helpful, friendly and efficient. After we decided on which tree to take home, we were out the door in less than 5 mins. That includes trimming the truck and putting it in the tree stand. Make sure to bundle up beforehand. It was very cold, but they serve coffee to help warm you up. read more

We bought our tree right after Thanksgiving. To our dismay, our tree completely died. We spoke with Mike and we picked a new tree. We did have to pay the difference between the old tree and new one. Unfortunately, they no longer had our size tree to we had to choose a size up or down. We so appreciated that we didn't have to buy a whole new tree AND Mike delivered our tree to us, within 30 minute of payment. At this time of year, that was so appreciated!! Thanks Mike!!! read more

Not what it used to be. The staff isn't particularly helpful nor friendly. In fact, they were downright rude to a guy who happened to bring his dog. The highly privileged staff really turned me off. It was hard to get help when nobody seemed to be working. The prices are average, but the stock was pretty picked over by Dec. 6th. All told, you'd probably get a better deal at Kmart or HomeDepot. read more

My first time at Big Wave Dave's and I was thoroughly impressed. There was a wide selection of trees that was a bit overwhelming at first, but luckily James was there to steer me in the right direction! He was extremely friendly and helpful, and hooked me up with a beautiful silver tip. Excellent service with a smile, you don't see much of that these days. read more

From the moment we arrived we were greeted by the gentlemen at the front. "Nice hat!". Holiday reggae cranked inside the tent, we set off to find the perfect tree. The smaller ones were running low but we found one quickly that was well shaped. While we waited for help with our selection our boys played mini hoops in the corner. The man helping us quickly challenged the boys to make a long distance shot for $5. An impossible shot and one nearly made. Before we knew it, the tree had a fresh cut, was tied down to the roof and the boys were munching on candy canes. On my way out, I got slipped a mistletoe branch, "for you and the Mrs. later ;)" Well done fellas. Five chakas brah! read more

Convenient easy place to pick up a Christmas tree. If I had toddlers and wanted to give them the full Christmas experience then I'd drive to the mountains and cut a tree down at a farm in the woods. But as an adult that wants to pick up something nice and close to where I live, this place is perfect. read more

I live in the LA area. Was visiting my daughter who goes to school in SB. We Googled tree lots and found this one. They were very friendly and had a great selection of trees. It was easy to browse through the trees the way they have them displayed. Intended to just get a tree for my daughter's apartment and ending up buying one for my house also and driving it back to LA. The tree was healthy and gorgeous and is still very much alive. We've had it since Thanksgiving weekend. Their prices were easily $20 less per size than what they charge us here at home. I'll most likely buy another from there again next year. :) read more

I have gone to big wave Dave's for a number of years even though the pumpkin's are a little pricey. They have games for kids and it has often been fun. This year was different. The cashier was very angry and rude. She seemed irritated that there were kids there. read more

Stopped in last night with my family after enjoying a dinner in the area. Not a friendly environment at all! The man there was rude and had a ripped up inflatable house and was upset that the kids were going near it. Came over and made a rude comment. If he is worried about his ripped up house MAYBE take it down or MAYBE buy one that is usable. Never stopping by here again and would not even joke about recommending it to friends/family. I just got out your pumpkin patch upset for the bad manners and the way we were treat by the guy working there. I noticed right the way the kind of bad mood ugly person he was right the way when my son came in I barely set my foot at the and he greeted us with a really bad attitude already, then he was onto us like he wanted to scold us first thing that he could think of, my son was quite throwing "fern" at the car all the kids were playing. This guy that works for you came scolding my son and me because he was playing with the fern. He was not, not even a second polite or not nice to us, I told him when I was leaving that a person like him should not be working with kids, and should NOT. He responded with a smirk on his old grumpy face "I stand with what I done" is this the new way of America? Being treat like a shit when we are customers and peaceful? This is awful! I am mother, student I help the community I know people with high academic education that would treat a dog better than he treat us. Really disappointed and I am sad I that my son had to go through this, what was supposed to be a magical moment it turned out to be horrendous. Shameful, and I am glad that I did not bought the pumpkin I wanted, and I will certainly not going back for my Xmas tree. We will continue our lives being happy and helpful people but I hope that people like him would not work in places with kids that is supposed to be a joyful time. Great service and friendly staff. Purchased two trees and they helped move trees and even loaded them to the roof of our car. They were $5 more than our normal spot but worth it! read more
