Capitol Hardware is conveniently located downtown. At the recommendation of my neighbor, I stopped here to look for kitchen handles and pulls. There certainly is variety in type, quality and price. Overall, the price is on the high end. Staff was friendly. If you are looking for unique pulls/handles, this store has a good assortment including for barn doors and gates. My door lock which is a sophisticated one was purchased eventually from Capital nearly a year back and once the construction was over we found that there was a minor issue and contacted them to get the issue resolved . They in turned went out of their way and made one other special lock for my door and send it and we replaced it with the old one . I am sure many would have give me a hard time and they wouldn't go back on something they got paid for nearly a year ago but these guys stood behind their name and their promise and to me that's key to success . The communication was excellent and Mile was very attentive and helpful and now I know Capital and mike will always be my source for locks and related material . We needed to do several doorknob repairs throughout my very old house in the Upper East, with mostly Baldwin hardware... several of the french doors were missing bottom strike kick plates, side panel latches, and allen head set screws. We found everything we needed!! And, a VERY special thanks to Richard Zazueta who would not give up on finding a piece that was discontinued, and sold us the display model!! Capital Hardware has an incredible staff that really saved me with a door lock issue. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to fix a Schlage door handle. In frustration I managed to break a part of the lock. Not good times, especially with my wife non too happy. I then went to Capital Hardware for advice on how to fix the lock. Paul went way above and beyond to help adjust the settings on the lock. They had the part(s) I needed to repair the damage I inflicted. No need to buy a new lock. He even let me borrow a tool for 2 days to adjust a screw. I genuinely cannot recommend them enough for your hardware needs. read more

They really do treat their customers with distain. They ordered me the wrong size product and refuse to refund me the cost. I've never even received the product. They have lied to my cc company so I couldn't even get my money back that way. So now I have no product and they have my money. I don't even feel comfortable going there to pick it up (what am I going to do with the wrong sized product?). Their policies are inequitable. I've only ever dealt with the owner. I am so happy we have a locally owned hardware store such as Capitol Hardware. Not only do they have an amazing selection of high quality samples (and in stock items) so that you can actually see things in person to evaluate real color and finishes, the staff is also knowledgeable and experienced. The people who work at Capitol know their stuff--Alan, Paul, Darin, Rick . . . Many of them have been working there for their entire careers--this company is doing it right! We recently had some plumbing issues that led to a major unexpected remodel. I've had to to visit Capitol at least twice a month for six months, and I'm so thankful for the specific help I've received in solving many problems and the fair prices on items I've needed. Exec Summary: Yes, they probably have more cabinet pulls, knobs and related doohickeys in their showroom than any other place between Ventura and SLO, but they make it so HARD to get stuff done, and, with one exception, their staff is consistently disdainful. Why so hard? Their displays of cabinet pulls have no center to center info, which is key for those trying to avoid filling and painting over existing holes and drilling new ones, and no prices, just make and model numbers. You have to write down said make & model, bring your scribbles to the counter, and then have staff run back and forth fetching info about each separate item. Disdain: Expect to be treated like persona non grata if you are not dressed up or a known general contractor. The first time I went there during this remodel I needed 50 cabinet pulls and browsed for nearly 30 minutes. No one asked me if they could help me, maybe because I was in paint-stained clothes I had been working on my remodel in, but my investment of time should have signaled that I was serious. While I was browsing on Halloween afternoon, I overheard staff complaining about the kids in costumes walking by. This was part of a business-building Milpas St hospitality event. Staff talked about closing the doors to stop them from coming in. They seemed to turn up their noses at me when I had the nerve to walk into the design showroom, in a somewhat patronizing way explaining that this showroom was not for those who needed hardware in less than 6 weeks. On another occasion an employee blew me off when I asked about the lumber dept. One person was professional and helpful in the 3 times I went there in the last 5 weeks. I managed to find what I needed elsewhere. Closing the lumber dept: They said they were not buying any new stock so maybe that is why it was dusty and jumbled and dark and neglected. I got what I needed at Hayward's. Ice cream: They have free self-serve soft serve, so there's that. read more

My initial experience with Capitol Hardware wasn't stellar but I've since had nothing but great service from the salespeople at the counter. They have gone above and beyond to help me locate difficult items, have patiently handled numerous special orders and have been quick to follow up when the items have arrived. This is the type of business that the internet will eventually destroy. They have a good stock of merchandise, but they have rude unhelpful staff. I am someone who likes to patronize local businesses, but I will never shop there again. Today I went into order a product that they told me they would be able to special order. I agreed to the price and the mark-up they quoted. I purchased the other items I needed and as I was walking out, noticed that my receipt did not have the special order item. When I went back in to ask why, they told me the boss said I could not special order because I didn't do enough business with them. 1) I was happy to pre-pay the purchase, so it wasn't an issue of the extending credit. 2) They quoted me a price and didn't tell me they were unable to complete the order until after I had purchased the other items. 3) They were rude when I asked for an explanation. Life is too short to interact with people like this. I went to capital this morning to purchase hardware for an entire home remodel. There we no less than 20 employees roaming around but none of them had a moment to assist. i was told to wait at the front counter where there was one guy. After 35 minutes guy looked at me kike I was from mars when i asked for some assistance in purchasing some cabinet pulls etc. After 5 minutes of preoccupied attention, he told me to write down my number on a piece of paper and he would be "back in a minute" . 10 minutes pass and he is no where to be seen! I was about to place a pretty large order and they had no one available to help me after 40+ minutes of patiaenly waiting. I reluctantly went to Lowes. I went in with measurements to buy an inside mail slot. The man was very abrupt, said he had one size larger than my measuerements, but it would work. He was very unfriendly and abrupt. He gave me the mail slot, but acted like I was bothering him. When I Got home, it did Not fit the slot. He apparently never looked at the measurements That I showed him. read more

Ten years or so, I did quite a bit of cabinet-making, and although Capitol had supplies no one else had, their service was beyond rude. I've never seen a bunch of employees who cared less about customers. It's sad to learn that many years later, this business apparently has the same lousy attitude towards people who actually come in wanting to spend money. read more

I'm surprised to hear bad comments about Capital Hardware. We have been customers since 2001 and have always received kind, friendly, helpful service. Recently the hardware on one of our doors was having a problem. When I was unable to remove the hardware to bring to the store, an associate came to the house and solved the problem. After reading the "negative" reviews we went to Capitol Hardware on a Monday afternoon with a bit of trepidation. Well, their displays were terrific and we browsed for a while and found a style of cabinet drawer/door pulls that we liked. While waiting our turn at the service counter we observed how helpful all the staff members were with their patrons. Our turn came up and RICH couldn't have been more courteous and helpful. Don't know what was going on in early 2012 but our experience was as good as it could have been. read more

I have purchased a number of items and been very satsified with the price and quality of the products they carry. I did have to wait a while to be helped, because they were busy. I've been going to Capitol Hardware for years because they do have lots of hardware to choose from; however, the staff is always rude, with the exception of one nice employee that I encountered about 2 years ago. It's a given that I expect to be unacknowledged from the time I walk into the store, so I try not to let this bother me. On the rare occasion that customer service is provided, I am always secretly shocked. Terrible customer service. Stood in line for 15 minutes and when it was my turn the clerk announced he was going to lunch. He didn't even give me eye contact or let me know that somebody else would be able to help me if I continued to wait. They are helpful when you can get somebody to help you but I couldn't believe how rude the guy was. If he had just said something, anything! to me at all, it would've been fine. read more

Love this store! When you need knobs this is the place to come. I love to refinish items I find in vintage stores and I can always count on Capitol Hardware to have something to fit every piece. The staff is very nice and helpful. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because they seem to help contractors first. But I understand that those are their regulars and deserve the best customer service. read more
