LOOK MA! NO HANDS! I had such a delightful experience with Big Wave Dave. The staff was pleasant, knowledgeable, patient, and professional from beginning to end. As I have never surfed in my life, it's a given that I would called the company with a long list of questions. All my questions were answered, my anxiety level dropped, and my surf lessons confirmed. Never once did I feel like I was a nuisance. My BF and I opted to do a semi-private lesson with Jimmy as our surf instructor. As excited as I was to go surfing for the first time, I was also extremely nervous. I am not the strongest swimmer and I hurt my leg pretty bad sometime during the trip. I was afraid of 1) death 2) failure 3) injury 4) humiliation. Somehow Jimmy sensed my fears and gave me extra reassurance. Our lesson included a quick practice of the 4 basic movements. I was shocked when Jimmy said, "Alright, let's go surfing" after practicing the movements only ONCE. OMG I was in severe panic mode at this point. For some reason, Jimmy's nonchalant attitude soothed me .....just noticed that my complete review was not posted, connection problems. I couldn't be bothered trying to re-type my review. I called at 4pm and was told last group lesson was at 3pm. But Krystal told me she talked to an instructor and he offered to stay late to teach my buddy and I a 1.5 hour private lesson for the two of us for $100 total. My buddy had to go find a bathing suit first and we walked down there by 4:30. Cody, our instructor was waiting outside. Krystal gave us free shirts so we wouldn't chafe our bodies on the board. Cody taught us the proper way to stand on the board and had us practice. Then we walked to the beach and got in the water. Cold!!! But we got used to it and paddled out. Cody took us one by one and would give us a push so we could catch the waves. I stood up on the first try and rode it in for about 10-15 seconds before wiping out. I was hooked. Cody was awesome and taught us about board safety as well as how to do it right. I watched the sunset from a surfboard at Waikiki before heading in and looked at the photographs. $25 per photo or $65 for both of us to get a DVD. For $10 more, I got the USB stick as well. Everyone was super friendly and it was worth every penny. I'll definately be back here to rent boards and perhaps take more lessons as well. read more

From the very start at the shop, Uncle Kevin showed us Aloha! He gave Kai some pointers and showed him how to stand properly on the board, even took a couple pictures with my two year old daughter. My wife also surfed for her second time in 10 years. My apologies, I can't remember her instructor's name. (I'm writing this after putting the baby to bed and everyone is already asleep) She was super excited and said her instructor was awesome too! Got to catch lots of waves and did really well. Stayed a week in Honolulu had coffee every morning. Honolulu coffee wasn't open yet so I went across the street to Big Wave Dave's. The most awful coffee I've had in a long time literally was undrinkable. One sip. Threw it out. And not to mention selling Alex Jones book? You Gotta be fkidding me. I was contacted by the owner who wanted to make things right so I'm updating my review. I understand that sometimes things happen and you don't have a wonderful experience, and that happens at every business. When an owner cares enough to reach out and make it right it means a lot and shows their commitment to quality and good customer service. I bought my girlfriend an hour and a half surf lessons while visiting Oahu using the yelp special, and for myself I rented a board. They're about a block off the beach so after a short 5 minute instruction for my girlfriend on how to stand up on the board they loaded the boards on a cart and we went to the beach. The instructor immediately took her out and I paddled behind. After two times out for her I went a little farther to catch a wave myself, and after a little while I could no longer find them in the water so I paddled in to make sure everything was ok. I found her sitting at a table by herself, she said she got sick while they were out and wanted to go in for a little bit. After she felt better she told the instructor she wanted to go back out and he responded "we should have just stayed out there" and wouldn't go back out with her. Then a couple minutes later he started to leave, and when she asked if he was going to wait for me he told her "he can carry his board back himself" and left. At this point I looked at my watch and we were about 50 minutes into the lesson. When we got back to the store I asked where the instructor was and was told he went home as it was the end of the day. I told them what happened and they offered to call the owner (at least there was that) but in all honesty they should have just refunded at least half the cost considering the instructor couldn't even stick around to finish the lesson we paid for. Alika is the best! We had a semi-private lesson with just the two of us and him. Being Australian, it's a little awkward to explain that I don't know how to surf, but Alika was awesome and make learning how to surf a breeze. We started with a quick land lesson to get the form down for how to paddle, turn and stand up on the board. Then, it was down to the beach--we didn't even have to carry the boards there, which is good because they were 11 feet long! We paddled out and Alika gave me a bit of a tow. He stayed in the water and told us when to paddle and stand, but he was super mellow about it, not like some other instructors who were yelling at their students. On that note, the only downside with the lesson is that it is a pretty crowded beach. There were loads of other people all learning to surf in the same spot. That said, Alika made sure that we weren't going on the waves that all the other people were so we could get a clear run. Because of that, I managed to stand up on the board every single time! It was awesome and Alika was super helpful and just a really cool dude to surf with. I was pretty bummed when time was up and we had to ride back in. We also had a photographer in the water and she was really nice and took a couple of shots and videos of us. I am taking a star off because the price for the photos and videos wasn't ever mentioned to us until the end, and at $100 a pop it seemed pretty gougey. However, the entire lesson was a fantastic experience and I wish I had done it earlier. read more

He's very helpful and a great instructor, and he knows the best spots to surf in and the best waves to surf on. I rented a board from them and several days after returning, they tried to blame damage they found on the board on me. Upon return of the board, I did them a favor and put it back on the board rack and said my goodbyes. I hung around the area for several hours and they couldn't bother to bring up any damage. Why? Because there was no damage at the time. Tried to contact them several times and they said they would call back, never did. They're trying to harass $ out of me through several different venues and not acknowledging their own employees did not follow procedure in checking the board back in. The repair cost is nominal compared to their poor business ethics. Reporting to better business bureau. Advice, don't go here, if you do take full video proof of your board upon check out and return. read more

While there are MANY choices for surfing lessons in Waikiki, I chose Big Wave Dave's because of the outstanding reviews and was NOT disappointed! The place was easy to find, get checked in, and suited up. (I rented the rash guard for an additional $5.) They provide a locker for you to store you items during the lesson. The class started on time and was thorough but not too lengthy.. Then we headed out for some waves! Josh helped me paddle out each time as I was slow going at it and made the whole experience really laid back and easy going. I really appreciate the time he spent with me that afternoon- after that first wave, you're hooked! They have a professional photographer shot a couple of your rides which you can purchase afterwards. **Big Wave Dave's doesn't have that "sold out" feeling like other schools located within resorts- the vibe is so authentic.** PARKING-Show up early to find parking! There is a parking garage practically next door, but they charge $15. (And I am pretty sure the parking attendant pocketing the money for herself as she wanted her tag back.. Not sure? But that's where we ended up and everything turned out ok!) you can also scout around for meters. Or park at the zoo for a couple bucks... That is one heck of a walk though! Another idea: perhaps valet at the hotel at the cross street, do your lesson, and then eat lunch/dinner with that hotel afterwards so you can have your parking VALIDATED. Our first surf lesson that we took during our trip was with Big Wave Dave Surf Co. It's been awhile since my sis and I have gone surfing so we figured we could use a refresher. We bought the Groupon semi-private lesson for two and ended up having our lesson with Alika. Super chill, easy going guy. We were originally going to have our surf lesson in the afternoon (everything was fully booked when we walked into the shop in the morning) but the waves looked terrible. Luckily, they were nice enough to let us re-book for the following morning. Think morning surfs are the best way to go if you can swing it! The lesson was good as Alika could tell that we both had a good grasp on what we were doing. We caught a bunch of waves and he helped my sister gain a lot of confidence. We used 11 foot boards so it was pretty easy to get up on (well, when you have someone pushing you into the waves, everything is easy). What I didn't like was that they didn't answer their e-mails promptly. I tried to set up a lesson for a specific date and their response was to just come into the shop. Their website does let you book online but for some odd reason, it doesn't let you put in the Groupon code. Hence trying to e-mail them to book. We bought some photos from them at the end (my sister got suckered in as there was a picture of both of us riding the same wave). It's a young kid that does the photography. The original price was something outrageous but we were able to get a more reasonable deal in the end, $20 for 20ish pictures. Also, they charge $5 to rent rashguards. I'd give them a 3.5 stars but we liked Moku more, which is a block further west from Big Wave Dave. read more

It almost seems overkill to add another great review to all the others (many which offer helpful pointers, btw). However, I would like to particularly single out Pono as a premier instructor! I have had "beginning" surf lessons 4 times now over the past 10 or so years ... however, they were so widely separated (2-3 years apart each time) that naturally, nothing carries over. My point is that I have consequently had 4 different instructors and they were all just fine, but Pono was the best - far and away! (incidentally, this was my first time at Dave's). It wasn't just that he had great instructions, but his energy and enthusiasm was amazing and just what I needed. Even tho I totally started from ground zero again, I had my best day ever. Plus, although I thought I was in decent shape (for a 63 year old) - after all the paddling out, balancing, etc, I soon got just flat exhausted, and would have been happy to call it a day. Then Pono started towing me out and I even got more for my money's worth! He worked harder than all my other instructors put together (and I thought they were good). Mahalo Pono. DO NOT BOOK THIS EXPERIENCE!!!! The staff is careless and rude. The instructor to surfer ratio is awful. My girlfriend was hit in the back of the head by another girls surfboard after she was pushed towards her by another instructor. Their only good instructor is Leo. My girlfriend had to go to urgent care and once we came back to fill out an accident report form they didn't even have one. They handed me a blank waiver which we didn't even know we signed because that was the check in form (very shady). They looked at us dumbfounded and with no sympathy whatsoever. "Welcome to the surfing world" "Accidents like this are common" well if accidents like this are common for you, you should probably reconsider your entire business. This place is awesome! I have lived on the CA coast for 30 years and have never touched a surfboard. Was in Waikiki on a short business trip and decided to take a surfing lesson. Big Wave Dave did not disappoint!! From the super friendly staff to the lessons from Dave's brother Mike everything was fantastic!! The pricing for a beginner lesson that included a short on land safety briefing and water time was very affordable. The goal is to get you out in the water quickly and standing within a few waves, Mike was very knowledgeable and gave direct and easy to understand advice. I was up on the board on only the second wave! I will definitely be back for more lessons from Mike and the team! I was waffling between 2 and 3 stars; I would give 2.5 if I could. First-timers and beginner surfers should definitely research the current surf conditions before paying in advance to book a lesson. When you book on-line, it says you can get a refund if the lesson needs to be cancelled due to weather or unforeseen issues. I understand now that, to cancel for full refund, it would need to be EXTREME weather (read: hurricane...tsunami...) or all staff fail to show up for work and there is no one to take you out. I am a first-timer and I have no idea what to look for when assessing surf conditions, nor did it occur to me that it would be necessary to check conditions, so I guess that is on me. Learn from my mistake!! The group that came back right before my private lesson said the conditions were horrible and the instructor pretty much begged me to reschedule the lesson when conditions improved. I would have rescheduled but we were leaving Oahu the next morning to go home. Given that it was impossible for me to reschedule, I asked to cancel for a refund but they said that was not possible. The staff were all super nice and apologetic about not being able to give me a refund -- they tried making a phone call and I def got the impression that someone higher up on the food chain said no. They did offer to let me buy $179 (price of private lesson) worth of stuff from their shop instead of going through with the lesson, but I didn't need nor want any more sunglasses and I was bored by the Big Wave Dave merch. I felt really bad for the instructor -- he was exhausted from the previous group lesson (which was surely a shit-show due to the wind, currents and rough surf); he was forced by higher-ups to take me out (note: i didn't have any other viable options; I was reluctant to just flush $200 down the toilet!!) Conditions were rough and I was exhausted, paddling non-stop. I also got thrashed around quite a bit in the rough surf but that is probably normal (?). I have a massive bruise on my arm but don't really remember getting hit by the board, probably bc toward the end I was too busy scrambling out of the surf to catch a breath before getting thrashed again, lol. BUT, I also should have been more self-aware about my lack of upper-body fitness and, to be fair, the instructor did warn me that it was going to suck. After about 45 minutes, I gave up and we came in (lessons are 1.5 hours). I do understand that they can't just cancel and give refunds if conditions are rough -- I used to work in the scuba diving industry and it's a common policy to accept the ocean's capricious conditions and dive regardless: for every seven amazing dives, three are usually a nightmare, and you just have to accept that. I guess the only thing I would have changed was the amount of tips and instructions given out in the water -- since it was a private lesson, I would have liked more tailored instruction and i wish I could have learned more about how to spot a rideable wave and about surf etiquette bc I have zero experience and am clueless. But, again, I'm sure if conditions were different there would have been more calm downtime to bob in the water and get more tips. The poor instructor just had to wait for days for me to reach him as I paddled fruitlessly against the current after each attempt to ride a wave. I could tell he was trying hard to find me decent waves and get me riding. Highlights: I did get a sweet arm workout and saw loads of turtles! The instructor and staff were nice and friendly; they were apologetic about the situation and, to be fair, the instructor was honest and candid in warning me that it would suck and that I should reschedule. I shall end the World's Longest Rambling Disjointed review with this conclusion: if you are a super-beginner, you don't have flexibility in your schedule, and you do not have the yoked-out upper body of a Cross Fit queen, RESEARCH THE SURF CONDITIONS BEFORE YOU BOOK AND PAY. I can only review the canoe outrigger experience; i have no idea how well this place does anything else. If you are interested in the canoe wave riding experience though, find it somewhere else. We made a reservation for which we were told to arrive early. We arrived early only to wait an extra 30 minutes AFTER our reservation. Following that, we walked 3/4 of a mile from the store, no joke, to a hotel we had passed on the way to the store where the canoe is located. Why can't we meet you at the beach? Oh, because you want us to buy coffee and water and food while we wait? Scam. We then arrived at the beach only to find another 30 minute wait because of the 2 rides still ahead of us. What is the point of a reservation if you don't intend to keep it? The store supplies a photographer but its obvious that is a primary way the store makes money because he kept pushing more and more photos. In fact, he REQUIRED us to go back to the store, another 3/4 mile walk so that we could check out the pictures he took and buy some (seems like scam to me). We had no need to go back to the store; we weren't buying anything further and our own hotel was a shorter walk the other direction. Still, the man would not take 2 lifejackets back for us. He insisted we do it ourselves and then left on his own leaving us to find our way back alone. It seems several shops charter out this boat for the ride. Our shop charged $35 per rider while others shops offer the same experience for $25 per ride. Find somewhere else. The 2 wave ride itself was very cool. We enjoyed the canoe ride and would do it again. I do not recommend this store though. The rest of the experience was frustrating, disappointing, rude and poorly managed. read more

I did a private session with myself and my husband. It costs more for a private lesson, but it's definitely worth it. If your considering a group lesson, it looked like there was only 1 staff member to a group of 4-6 people, making it difficult to gain the full surfing experience. My husband and I had to wait about 5 mins to catch a "perfect" wave. If we were in a group, I can only how much longer we would have been waiting for our turn. The staff member who gave us surfing lessons was great. The only downside of the experience was that the photographer was taking pictures from the beach, so it made it hard to know where to smile to. Also, the photographer did not take pictures the entire hour. At the end of the surfing lessons, the staff shows everyone who went surfing at the same time as you (private & group surfing) some of your photos on a slide show before you buy them. Since there were many people surfing the same hour as me, I was not able to see all my photos because the staff stop playing the slide show. When I got home to view my photos, I had photos of other people, less than 30 photos on the USB, most of the photos were of us falling in the beginning of the lesson. The photographer did not take any photos of us surfing as we got better in our lessons. Dave the owner is a horrible person and our experience with him and his shop was terrible. This ad does not mention this is a GROUP LESSON WITH 7 other new learners! Our son has been taking private lessons for 2 weeks at other islands and shops and this was our first experience with this shop. Upon arrival at his shop, Dave was rude by treated us extremely poorly. When I told him $129/hr is the going rate for private lessons and since our son already was advanced in surfing, he did not want to take the beginners group lesson being offered, Dave blew up and started yelling at me in front of my family, his employees and other customers telling me to call Viator to cancel?! We left with utter disbelief about this awe full experience and called another surf shop to schedule private lessons for our son. His false and misleading advertisement to unsuspecting travelers like us is deplorable, and is behavior in treating his first time customers gets the worst rating I can give to him and his shop! read more

BWD treated us very well last year! This review is long, long overdue, but I wanted to be sure to add to the high marks for BWD, especially since there is no tourism for Waikiki this summer...We scheduled two sets of private and semi-private lessons over 2 days for our family of 4. We all went out the first day; and while the kids were more successful in standing up, we all had a fun time. One caveat: My husband's and my instructor was a little frustrated (and he let me know) that I couldn't hear all of his instructions, due to my being partially deaf. The instructors for the kids, though, were quite patient and very encouraging. The area where lessons take place is away from the crowds of the main beach in Waikiki. Also, since we took one of the early lessons, there was hardly anyone else in the water near us at that time. We decided to buy a picture/video package, and although it costs plenty, it was absolutely worth it to get the memories clearly saved on disc. We have some of the pictures displayed right now in honor of summer. Especially now that we are staying-at-home, it's nice to remember the good time we had traveling last summer. And, no, you can't take any pictures/videos worth anything using your iPhone or little camera from the beach; the surfing takes place too far from shore. What made this a definite 5 star experience was on Day 2. Our son couldn't make his lesson because he wasn't feeling well - and my husband and I couldn't take his place because we were, well, feeling our age after being out on the water the day before! While my daughter went for her lesson, the instructor kindly brought a beach chair for me to relax in and enjoy the amazing beach views. We knew our son's lesson would be non-refundable, as clearly outlined ahead of time, so we were a little bummed out about that at first. The shop, however, came up with a perfect alternative for us, though, that left us feeling quite happy and that we'd gotten something for our money. We appreciated that very much! Finally, if you have feet that aren't used to walking in anything other than your floors at home or soft grass/sand, you may want to consider wearing some kind of water socks. Awesome and friendly dudes, good boards, reasonable prices and a cute dog to top it all off! They allowed us to store our wallets and other items in a locked box while we took our paddle boards to the beach. The actual walk to the beach with the boards and paddles is a pain in the butt but I guess that's why they're slightly cheaper than the outfitters right on the beach. Cool stuff in their shop too. I'll come here again for my next SUP adventure - and hopefully this time I'll actually stand up for more than 15 seconds! read more

Chris and Paul were our instructors for my whole family. They were absolutely amazing! High recommend this to be your surf school destination. Paul was so patient, funny, and kind with my kids (7 and 10). Chris was so knowledgeable and funny with my wife and I too. They seemed to really have fun with us. They got us up on a board surfing in no time. I watched several video reviews on other companies just like many of you do. If you need a review to push you over the edge to help you make a decision, let this one be that for you. Aloha!! My extended family, total of 12 people, including a 5 and a 7 year old took first time surfing lessons here. Totally recommend lessons from the crew here. Professional, friendly and made sure all of us had a good experience. Cody took my 5 year old daughter on a board with him. She had so much fun riding with him. She actually managed to balance on the board and not hold his hand. My 7 year old daughter had a semi private lesson with Chris, and caught some waves on her own. The rest of the adults and teens had varied success. :-) Overall, the instructors were laid back and ensured everyone had a good time. Everyone was tired after being out on the waves for over an hour, not including land instruction time, but had nothing but huge grins and shakes for Big Wave Dave. Our own little family, parents and 3 girls took an outrigger canoe ride with Dave as Captain. Epic ride, it felt like we could have surfed up onto the beach with one of the waves! Since the 3 girls couldn't paddle, (too young) Dave filled out crew with 2 additional staff members. Our girls got to enjoy the ride while mom and dad paddled! The paddling is super fun too! And don't forget to buy photos and video from the cutie of a photographer Kat! She hangs out on the beach with a monster zoom lens and captures the experience for you! We bought all the photos and video from both the surfing and the canoe ride. They burn onto a disc or transfer to a USB drive. Totally reasonably priced and WAAAY better than what you can get with your 200 mm lens. Two thumbs up!!! read more
