Service was amazing - nice to see it hasn't changed in 2025 and in 2021! The Aloha Days collection is always special to see. I got a sweater and my wife got a hoodie. The quality of the items is good, so I feel like we got a great value. The manager of the store was kind enough to recommend a bakery/cafe, and while we didn't have the time to check out, we appreciate them trying to make our stay on the island more enjoyable even though we had already maid our purchase. It's been a long time since I wrote a review, but this shop and its service has me compelled to do so. Went for an online order, came out with feeling like I made friends and got some ins with the owner! After I placed my order online, I received a text not too long after showing me that they received my order, and attached a personalized vid showing the items and giving thanks for the order. That was enough to make me feel good about the online process, but upon receiving the order, I see that it is vacuum sealed (smart touch!) with a few other nice personalized touches and extras inside that weren't even necessary, but sets this place apart from the rest. I treated myself to a brand-new surfboard from Hawaiian South Shore. Brett, the manager, assisted me. He helped with board selection and was very patient with me while I tried to make up my mind on which one to get. Most important thing is he steered me away from one that would have been less than ideal for the type of wave and conditions I mostly surf, thus saving me from a less than satisfactory experience. After I took my new board for the first time, I was so appreciative of his advice and knew I had made the right choice! This is where expertise and care for the customer combines to make for a great outcome. A couple days later, I wanted to change the fin configuration but I couldn't do it on my own because the fit was so tight. I went back to the store for help. Sean was glad to assist and got it done in just a couple of minutes. Great service! I've been shopping here for well over 20 years (?!) and I buy at least a few boards here per year when I am in Hawaii. Probably the best part of this shop is that Dave always stocks the "good stuff" like Firewire, JS, Lost, FCS and Da Kine. They also make great content with interviews of shapers and customers which is VERY useful when trying to decide on your next board. I do still have to shop for accessories elsewhere, like T&C, HIC in Kailua or Surf and Sea in Haleiwa as they have more complete inventories, but as an overall surfboard shop, you cannot beat HSS. Letme just start by saying this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE surf shop in Honolulu. I always get my gear here, and the workers go ABOVE AND BEYOND each time to help me. Well, I bought a traction pad for my surfboard 4 days ago. I had cleaned my board pretty well before applying the pad and left it on for 48h before taking it out for its first session. As I was surfing yesterday, a part of the pad came off. I brought my board in to explain what had happened. David immediately told me to pick out a new pad and that he would help me apply it himself. He spent 20 minutes just wiping it down and really making sure it was clean before applying the pad. He also helped me re-wax my board and gave me some really good surfing tips. He also WALKED MY BOARD ALL THE WAY TO MY CAR AND PLACED IT INTO MY CAR FOR ME (keep in mind I parked a block away). Literally went above and beyond. I will forever be a loyal customer. Been shopping here for years and years...but I think it's time for me to go elsewhere and give other local businesses some of my hard earned money. They obviously cater to Japanese Nationals which is fine. They're super nice to help, they buy and they don't return. I don't have any problem with that and in fact, having worked retail myself, I liked helping them too and gave me a chance to brush up on my Japanese speaking. My problem is with the owner David. He can be rude and grumpy for no reason as if you are bothering him for just talking to him when he's standing on the sales floor. On more than one occasion, I feel he has been unnecessarily rude and acted like an a$$hole for no reason. One shouldn't be made to feel like that especailly when you're making a purchase. I always had great service from all the managers throughout the years so at least he knows how to hire them. read more
