Went to a store at Alamoana today to get slippers. Not one pressing greeted me when I went in. Three people walk right past me ... some grumpy woman who was building something on the wall... this other young boy looking at me like what are you doing in my store? While the whole time I'm trying to figure out the sizes and the straps for them make your own slippers. There was a bunch of sales people behind the register talking to who I found out was the regional manager. I was gonna talk to him about the service, but he looked grumpy as hell so I thought it wouldn't even make a difference if I talk to him. Finally the girl who rang me up got the right straps for my slippers put it all together and gave me the buy one get 1/2 off discount. But in all ... no aloha in that store. It could've been a mainland store. Sometimes I don't understand our local people who work in service oriented jobs ... No aloha. Mahalo, I will not be back. read more

The number of times coming here to shop for various items head to toe, no I'm not a surfer but do love the beach though it's been years since I've had the chance to do so but do love all things the greater outdoors in Hawaii. The staff here is great to greet you upon entering, I love all the merchandises they have here from hats to create your own slippers while carrying that bougie flask to keep you hydrated along with some sunscreen you'll look that part with any of their shirts and outerwear here as they have so much stickers to express your style and moments all are found here and for everyone that you know along with deals with purchase are great way to save and grab a deal. Upon entering, I thought HIC moved from their longtime first level store here, but turns out this is a second location in Ala Moana Center on the third level. I'm not sure why they added this tiny second location as they sold mainly clothing here. Perhaps they needed more space? If you want slippers or surfboards, they're available in the first level store only. My curiosity drew me in as I wasn't planning on purchasing anything. The store was clean and organized. No one greeted me or asked if I needed assistance, a rarity for an Oahu store. If they did, I would've known off the bat that this was a second store, not a moved one. No big deal. OVERALL: I'm happy HIC is doing well enough to afford two stores in lucrative and pricey Ala Moana Center. It's just an inconvenience to the consumer who has to navigate two stores that are far away from each other. read more

HIC Surf has opened a store on Level 3 of Ala Moana Center on the same side as Lucky Strike Social. I'm not nor will I ever be a surfer girl - I grew up in areas of cold and snow for the first thirty years of my life. What lured me inside HIC Surf was its ezH2O water bottle filling station! I'm not sure if everyone is allowed to fill their water bottles without purchasing a water bottle from HIC Surf, but no one said anything when I refilled my personal bottle. Cold filtered water on a hot summer day is a good draw for any store located in an open-air shopping center. After refilling my water bottle, I thought the least I could do is take a look around at what kind of merchandise is sold at HIC Surf. If you are a surfer guy or gal, HIC Surf is a good choice to find surf gear from top brands including Quicksilver, Billabong, Hurley, Rip Curl, Roxy, RVCA, Vans, and Volcom. It's also a nice place to buy souvenirs if you're looking for good quality clothing with a Hawaii logo. I liked a lot of the t-shirts and tank tops sold at HIC, and I will be returning when I feel the need to update my summer beach wardrobe. It's taken some time to get used to, but every once in a while I do get out of my conservative outfits to wear laid back attire more appropriate for Hawaii. I love that although there have been so many changes to Ala Moana over the years, this place has remained the same. Today I came here looking for some children's clothes. They have kids items in the back of the store. Pros: -lots of HIC apparel as well as other surf brands - clothes, hats, bags, slippers, surfboards, water bottles, coolers, sun glasses, stickers, etc. - I love that they carry safe sunscreen brands that do not damage the coral reef and our ocean. First discovered HIC about 10 yrs ago and so we always make it a point to buy merchandise whenever we're visiting in Hawaii. Their graphics t-shirts are made out of exceptional materials and they have cool quality stickers and automotive accessories. Whenever I'm in town, I always make it a priority to stop by HIC! Ever since I was a kid, I've been coming here--it's on the first floor of Ala Moana, and around the corner from Island Vintage Coffee, on the parking garage side of the mall. However, now, they also have a smaller shop on the third floor right next to Lucky Strike. There's plenty of gear from brands like Billabong, Quicksilver, Volcom, Hurley, etc. but my favorite apparel is HIC's own line. They've stepped up their design game over the past couple of years and have awesome tee, hoody, hat and jacket designs that you can't get outside of Hawaii. My partner got a handful of tees the last time we were in town, and he's already starting to get compliments on them back here on the mainland. In addition to casual apparel, they also have some nice Hawaiian shirt designs too. This is a must visit for local gear--plus, they generally have some sort of promo going on too. When I hit Ala Moana shopping center, Hawaiian Island Creations is always one of my must stops for unique t-shirt and boardshort prints. I love how you walk in the store, hang a left and the wall of t-shirt prints are right there. On my most recent trip to Hawaii, I found a very cool print. It was actually my second choice: They did not have my size in my first choice. In fact, they only had two shirts period in that particular print. My favorite old-school Hawaii brand! Have always loved this store, but it only gets 3 stars today... Here's why: SERVICE All the girls on staff were unfriendly & had no interest or desire to help us. When we needed stickers, asked if there were more slipper sized, or women's t-shirt sizes we got the same annoyed responses (which were no they didn't have anything that wasn't on the floor & hurry up and choose your stickers because you're wasting my time). SELECTION They still have great selection, but not enough sizes/variety of colors in stock. I've never seen slipper sizes that low! And every shirt my daughter liked only had L/XL that day... She REALLY wanted a VansXHIC shirt but there was nothing in a small OR medium??? Hmm... Finally got to go to one of the several HIC stores on Oahu. I go waaay back as an HIC supporter. High school days... which was many seasons ago. I've always loved HIC tees and only wear HIC boardshorts to surf in, when the water temp is actually warm enough to do it. I have accumulated dozens of HIC tees over the years and cherish the unique designs. This store is a lot bigger than the one on Maui I visited several years back. They sell waaay more other than brands than just HIC. I was just after tees I cant get on the mainland or on the website and slippah colors I may not have... No luck on the slippahs. I have every color available already. HAHA. Found some cool tees for myself and the boys back home. They had a tee with the HIC symbol in Philipine flag colors with the Philippine sun. So perfect for the summer time and more importantly, not available on the mainland. I also got the Shoyu tee which is the HIC symbol but with a play on the Hawaiian shoyu (soy sauce) logo. It's so perfect... Cheee!!! Employees were super helpful. The girls that work there were super cool and helped me get the sizes I needed from the HIC t-shirt wall. Not gonna lie, I thought a couple of them were cute as well. HIC tees at the time I went were buy one get the next half-off so total score for me especially cause I was buying a bunch to bring back for friends. And when I went back to buy some more the night before flyin back to the mainland, I found out that if you spend more than $100, you get a free tote bag so they added up my 3 receipts and I was golden.. Mahalos for the dope tote bag! Go check em out. When you first walk in, on your left side, is the HIC t-shirt wall. The shadow boxes show each design available but there are many color options in each print available so ask if they dont tell you. The girls told me what was available as I pointed each one out... This is a really nice surf gear shop and the people working here are very sweet. I enjoyed looking around in here and they gave us good advice. They have the largest collection of board shorts I've ever seen in my life! The clothes are reasonably priced as well, not overpriced for tourists. This is a bomb place to stop if you're visiting and need some good clothes for your trip. Awesome surf store in the fantastic Ala Moana center! My friend needed to get a rash guard and I was looking for a new duffel bag for my flight - we only needed to look in one store (this one!) to find exactly what we needed. All of the surf gear is in the back left section of the store so that made it easy to narrow down the selection. The da kine bags were on promotion up front in the middle section so I was able to browse through those easily as well. The guys working here were helpful and nice - I highly recommend dropping in here for all your surf brand needs! read more

If I could give this place 10 stars for customer service, I totally would! Bought a couple of shirts during Black Friday. They were gifts for family in the mainland. Family received them for Christmas but the size was too small. Had it shipped back in hopes I would meet the deadline to exchange for a bigger size. Unfortunately I didn't make it. Brought it in anyway and was helped by Burke. Explained the situation and after confirming the condition was still unused, was told I can still exchange. They didn't have it in this store so Burke took down my info and advised he will confirm if other stores have it and will inform me if so. Burke kept me updated in not only that they have the shirts but also when it arrived. Went in and completed the exchange. I bought a Reef slippers for my wife for Christmas from Hawaiian island creation store at alamoana mall & Lianne helped me when i bought it. when i went to exchange the slippers today for a bigger size with my gift receipt, One of the workers(lianne or mahealani) told me that it was not their gift receipt and insisted that i bought it from another store. I told them I bought it from this store on that rack & the workers wanted the original receipt. (why give a gift receipt if they don't honor it) after searching through my stack of receipts I found the original receipt & they finally helped me get a bigger size slipper. The sad thing is they never apologized. I felt that they thought i was lying to them. Their customer service was unacceptable and I will not shop there again nor refer others to. read more

One of the many stores I don't stop in unless I have a reason to. My reason for looking around the other day was because I had gift cards! I came in with my cousins, just looking. There were a few merchandise I would consider buying... until you look at the price tag! Wow! I'd rather go to Forever 21 and get more for that one piece of clothing. I've been having a really hard time finding a specific pair of kicks fins. I needed a specific color and style. After going to several stores I stopped by HIC. I was helped by Kasey and he managed to find a pair for me in another store and is having them shipped over to the Honolulu location. He was really patient with me and had such a great attitude. He seemed to know a lot about the brand specifically also, and was informative about how to use them. I definitely appreciate the high quality customer service and Kasey going out of his way to find me the specific pair I need! I will definitely be back because of that. I've been here more than a few times. Mostly for equipment for my beach toys. Yes things are on the expensive side here but what else surf shop isnt? The only problem I have here is when I'm returning or exchanging something. The young kids that work in here are really friendly and accommodating. But in my experience, exchanges and returns have to go through this older lady and she always seems mad. I dont think I ever saw her smile. I always show my receipt and still get that suspicious look. Meh, whatever. As long as I have my receipt I'm good. Im just glad this place is at the front of the mall instead of inside like that other place. Just have to deal with the parking situation. I have no choice but to shop here. My brother has been wearing HIC shirts and sweatshirts for about 3 decades (yes, we are old). No other kind of tshirt makes him as happy. I am always pleased to check out the new designs. This trip I stocked up on the tank tops since they were having a sale. I was excited that they had several different paddling designs and I know my bro will absolutely love those shirts. I also had to pick up the Hanafuda design, since it brings back so many memories from my childhood. Too bad the HIC women's line is pretty small. Since there were only a few things that I found for myself, I had to buy all the tribal honu designs for my husband in hope that I can steal one as a sleep shirt. read more

Isiah was super helpful in the little upstairs area that has all the boards. He explained the differences in boards and clearly actually loves the water and was able to explain things in a way I could understand. Even though I wasn't ready to buy he was completely helpful and didn't seem put off by my dumb questions. I'm always nervous about buying things from a shop in a "mall" especially if I'm not educated on pricing - but the prices didn't seem bad. Yes they have great stuff - we brought back a Kailua Tee for my bro. My favorite thing about HIC? The slippas they made. Mix-n-match, I don't recommend mix-matching straps though - that's just fug. Why they get 3 instead of 5 stars? They flippin' run out of straps whenever you go in there to get a pair made. How do you not have enough WHITE or CLEAR straps in-stock?!?! Does the grocery store run out of milk?! Seriously, I fly 5 hours, looking forward to bringing home at least 6 pairs for my family and friends, and I can barely make 1 pair of slippas. PO'd I was. Now I have to send another friend to get them made. *sigh* Good thing I already own 4-5 pairs here in SF. If and when you do have a pair made in the color/size you want, the flips are comfortable, smokin' hot, and they last a while. Staff here is super chill. Love the fact that they don't stalk me in the store, or force a conversation (BIG DEAL IN MY BOOK). Staff seems knowledgeable about the gear that they're selling. The few who have helped me were all friendly and helpful, they definitely know their products and what they are selling. Love the vibe of the store, from music choice to how they organized their clothes and board placement. The famous rotating board rack, love it! They have a decent range of surf boards at the store. If the store doesn't have what you are looking for, they are nice enough to recommended a place or suggest online shops. I honestly don't go in to buy clothes, for girls anyway.. but the guys section has a great amount of board shorts. Never really had a problem finding a size. Price is fair considering we live in Hawaii and how expensive things are in general. Parking has been a bit of a hassle lately at Ala Moana Period, due to all of the construction. It doesn't help that HIC is in a dark space and the parking in that area seems to always be changing because of the construction work. I use to love parking in that area though. It was easy to get to, and for some reason I had no problem finding parking there. Now, it's a different story. Despite the far walk from where I now will park till I am rerouted, I prefer going to HIC. Note to self, in need to buy more surf wax. read more

There's a massive selection of boardshorts in all different sizes for the guys, and plenty of sex-ed up beachwear for those ladies out there. Add to that a healthy selection of kickass boards and accessories; including fins, waxes, and rashguards. They've got an incredibly knowledgable, chill and laid-back staff who are there to answer all your questions, get you your gear, and get you on your way. And don't worry haoles, if you're new to the whole ocean thing, these guys will help make you look less retarded (if that's possible). read more

I agree with another review, it's good to shop here if you're looking for a gift for the opposite sex (males). They have TONS of board shorts, I can't even handle it. Hands down the best selection of board shorts, compared to the other surf stores like T&C. Usually at other stores the small sizes for girls are always sold out, but here they do have a variety of sizes. The back pack/ tote bag selection is amazing. I feel like they actually have things that appeal to a lot of different styles. I wouldn't say the store has bad customer service, but when I went, no one greeted me or asked if I needed help. *Be aware, not everything in the back room is on sale. Walked in there with my family; no "hi" "aloha", just received stares from the workers, really looked like they were busy talking and selling stuff to their co-workers lol. I'm just so disappointed with the staff there; they could at least fake like they give a shit but then again that's probably how they were raised. Really makes me think how they even stay in business with attitudes like that.
