North Branford Big Y has much friendlier and helpful employees than any other grocery store in the area. The produce is mostly from local farms and the store has always been clean and well stocked when I go. I tried to order sandwich trays today at both the deli and prepared counters. The deli person had a book to order from, she then told me I needed to go to the prepated food counter. They had no book to show me my options to order. I asked if she could go down and get the book of choices, she returned to me and said no I can't! The other prepared food person, told me I don't have to be nasty!! He was inappropriate to me! No help to get my order!! I will never go to either counter again!! I say "maybe" because they do have some redeeming factors - generally quality meats and good selection of items. The negatives are they are more expensive than other area supermarkets and often the fresh produce isn't always all that fresh, especially considering the higher prices. What really ticks me off is their store-packaged hamburger is weighed in the container. I've verified this a few times with my home scale. I imagine since my consumer-grade home scale has a tare button to zero-out the weight of the package, their commercial-grade scale does too. read more

This is our neighborhood market. It's clean, has good hours, and the staff is usually pretty kind.

Truthfully I'm in shock this location is rated so low. I have always found the staff and the service they provide to be above average. The store is well taken care of and very clean. Their products are fresh and certainly have a longer shelf life than other competitors. The deli staff are especially friendly and helpful. It's my main grocery store..no complaints. read more

This is my absolute favorite grocery store and I'm usually here at least 5 days a week. Tonight I placed an order through door dash to pickup. They got my order, I waited 20 min because that's when it said it would be ready, paid beforehand too. I get there and they didn't see my order.....they didn't hear the beep or whatever it is through DoorDash. Then a guy I've never seen working there gave me an attitude about it. They said at first it will be like 10 minutes then when the girl says I never confirmed it so I don't know why she's even here ‍ the guy then says well it's going to be 30 minutes now. Then asks if I'm going to wait for it, I said well yeah I already paid for it. I guess this is the last time I order through DoorDash from them. Ordered a large sheet cake from the bakery last weekend for a party I was hosting. The cake was made and decorated exactly as discussed. Super fresh and delicious. Quite possibly the best Big Y cake I've tasted thus far (and I've had Big Y cakes a bunch of times prior). Bakery staff was prompt and helpful. I like this place. This is a supermarket large enough to have a reasonable selection, yet the management takes personal service very seriously. There is no self-checkout or carry-your-own laser scanners. Here you get checked out by a human who talks to you and seems happy to have your business. (Pretty radical stuff). The store is very clean and obviously fairly new. The real gems are the fish and meat departments, both way above industry standards. The other Big Y in Branford is equally nice, but a little small and therefore lacks some selection due to space constraints. read more

The employees that work in the receiving area at this location are rude and refuse to do their jobs. They leave pallets in front the receiving areas so only one truck can deliver and pick up product at a time and leave other trucks waiting for almost an hour with no sympathy instead of just simply doing their jobs and taking a few minutes to move the pallets blocking the second receiving dock. The Big Y Floral department at the North Branford store is not accommodating at all and quite rude. I had stopped in last week to inquire about ordering a corsage for a prom occurring on 4/29/22, and I was told to come back the following week (Tuesday or Wednesday) as the flower deliveries would be coming in early in the week and I would have a better selection. I was told it should be no problem at all. That person in the flower department was very nice and professional. However, when I called the store on the following Wednesday to inquire about the corsage, I was told, quite rudely, that there was no way she could do a corsage for Friday and it was out of the question as she had a wedding to do. I will never buy flowers from the North Branford Big Y again. Even if she couldn't do the corsage, she did not have to be rude about it. And, Big Y should not tell a customer to come back the following week to order a corsage, and then at that time turn around and say they couldn't do it. I relied on that statement and did not look at any other place. I was able to order a corsage from another flower shop in the area, thankfully. But I will not use Big Y again for any flowers. read more

I ordered a 10 rib crown roast of pork for christmas.when i went to pick it up, it was shaped like a horseshoe.they tied an apple inside the horseshoe shape.when i told the butcher i was not happy with this at first he did not respond.i said i cant stuff this and a crown roast is all about presentation. At that point he turned around and said that was the best he could do because it was Only 10 ribs.i order 10 ribs every year from big y and it was never a problem and 10 ribs is not a tiny roast.it was a take it or leave it attitude.i told them they took my phone number when i ordered it and should have called me if there was a problem.no response.rude.i did not want to be THAT customer creating a scene at the meat counter.took the roast.went tothe checkout and no price on the roast.the customers behind me in line were also not happy.never again big y.i will go elsewhere even if i have to pay more money but i will be treated with respect. read more

I like this supermarket. It's closes in proximity to my house, and I am happy about that. The lines always go really quick, the clientele are very calm and peaceful individuals. For the most part they have stock in all of my favorite items. The one issue I have is that Big Y is the only store that sells the mango salsa I enjoy, and they aren't always stocked with it. read more

Big Y , both in North Branford as well as in Guilford , were my go to stores for years. I always was happy with my purchases. Employees always were polite and pleasant. Since we are now in a world we're COVID-19 dominates all of our lives , I no longer feel comfortable shopping at Big Y. The reason for my discomfort is the lack of enforcement of masks. I was told that Big Y's policy was not to approach customers and ask them to wear a mask. That comes down from corporate. That, not only, affects other shoppers, but also all employees. Other chains have made it clear that " no mask, no service ". I wish that Big Y would institute this policy. read more

We have gone out of our way to shop at this store for years ..... but no longer. My husband left his wallet in the carriage and didn't realize it until he got home. He immediately turned around to head back to the store while I called customer service to ask that whoever was on carriage duty be asked to go retrieve it. I knew exactly which corral the carriage had been returned to. I was told that "all of our employees are too busy" but she would take my name and phone number in case someone turned it in. Really!!! We've spent thousands of dollars at your store and you can't be bothered when I can tell you exactly where to look? Not even a "well the next time they go out, we'll ask them to look?" Nice store! Very clean and spacious. But the Deli is the worst of any supermarket around! Every time I by cold cuts from here. It's one pound pile of shavings of meat.. just looks like they shaved the meat off a dull blade. Just terrible! It is a shame, nice store but the Deli workers need to learn how to slice meat. I want to marry this store. It's the best Big Y that I've ever entered as it's meticulously clean with a fantastic "feng shui" and somewhat dimmed lighting (I quasi-jokingly refer to it as mood lighting). It's also very quiet for a supermarket, which is a quality that ranks favorably with me because I have heightened sound sensitivity. The size is perfect: not sprawling and yet not cramped. This available space is extremely well-stocked with an awesome selection of food products, toiletries and everything in between. If you prefer clean and organic, this is your store! The produce section is lushly impressive, and the deli is wonderful. Big Y always boasts that old fashioned "neighborhood butcher" feel and vision. I haven't tried the bakery yet, but I've inspected what was displayed and found the sights & fragrances very appealing. As a veteran of customer service and retail management, I'll gladly report their staff as exceedingly dedicated, helpful and affable. Gold stars for all! And I love the fact that there are no "self-serve" registers because it ensures at least some of that important human contact in this era of social media isolation. As for the parking lot, I enjoy the easy access from Route 80 and a stunning amount of multiple spaces are always open. Even if you normally detest grocery shopping as I often do, you'll be pleased with a nice shopping experience at this Big Y. read more

I don't generally shop at Big Y but I've gone there for their pizza a few times. I don't think I'm going to go there even for that anymore. Once I got a burnt pizza and another time they couldn't follow my simple instructions to NOT cut the pizza. This is my favorite Big Y in the state. Huge, clean store with lots of local produce. They have a much wider selection of seafood then other branches, including a sushi chef station. The aisles are spacious and pleasant, and there are always plenty of cashiers to avoid long checkout lines. read more
