After a frustrating shopping experience at the Clinton Shoprite trying to get simple advertised basics, we traveled to Branford in the hope of finally getting the items we needed. I'm so glad we went all the way to Branford-- my experience at this Big Y felt like going to the promised land! They had everything we were looking to buy, laid out in a logical way, in-store prices matched the website or in the case of unadvertised specials, were even lower! Employees were knowledgeable, helpful and cheerful. Rotisserie chicken was moist and perfectly cooked, produce was top notch, the deli offered samples so I try and could confidently order their potato salads (both their creamy dill and their German potato salad were great!). Coffeecake looked and tasted like it came from an old-fashioned bakery, not a chain grocery store. It was such a delightful contrast and relief to shop in such a well-run grocery store that I even splurged on a few extra items just because Big Y carried them at a good price and it was such a happy place to shop. read more

I think the Y in Big Y says YES! I love their plant, cut flowers selections. Their bakery is one of my favourites. Their baked goods are just amazing, very inclusive of gluten free or dairy free options. Their icings are not overly sweet. Their pizza bar has some huge and delicious pizza slices. My favourite is cheese pizza, pesto tomato pizza. Their service all around is pretty quick and responsive. The deli is also stocked and has some amazing options on the weekends. The store is beautifully organised, some amazing products both organic and international selections. They have some great selection of frozen items. The ambiance is calm, polite and pleasant. They have some decently priced salt bags which was a great score just before a storm and by the time I left the store the bags were over. The only downsize I feel is that the prices of some items maybe higher than usual. I would still give it a BIG YES! read more

Great location with a super helpful staff. The store is kept very clean and well organized. The shelves were fully stocked. There is plenty of parking and it seems to be a very safe neighborhood. Hopefully the lottery tickets there will also be lucky. The staff was very efficient and it was a pleasure to go in and out quickly. read more

I come here at least once a week for my groceries needs. They renovated early in the summer and I really appreciate that the have a area for the low carb / sugar free goods. I love that they carry all my most need items like my pete and gerry eggs and primal kitchen sauces/dressing/oils. Definitely recommend is kept organized, clean and most importantly stocked up. read more

Great place to shop. The store is clean and well organized. Like all Big Y's they have some great specials every week . They also give you digital coupons that are even better. The meat department will sharpen you knives for free, as long as they have a straight surface. I gave them 8 knives, did my shopping and they were done before check out. Produce and meat department's serve quality products. The seafood department had a special on lobsters for $6.99. I bought two and had them steam them. They were finished in 30 minutes. They were delicious. I ate them at Branford Point. read more

Unfortunately I won't be shopping here as a frequent customer because my partner & I were racially profiled this morning . I understand people don't have proper etiquette but if your job is to hover over self checkout why have the cameras while the *employee* little short guy with the bad haircut watched us down to us swiping our debit card the little old white gentleman did not get the same treatment . Once we walked away the older gentleman was left there still checking out yet the short employee with the short haircut walked away once we did . Although we did not cause a scene I decided I would write a review instead long story short BIG Y I think you guys need to have a updated culture diversity meeting soon ! This is a pretty nice location. I've only shopped here a handful of times though. Typically, I go to the North Branford one, but just happened to be in this one when I wanted to stop in during their "Buy 1 Get 2 Free sale" and I wanted to take advantage of some of the promotions I saw in the circular that was delivered to my house. I got the canned veg, the roasted red peppers in jars..all buy 1 get 2 free. Then I ventured over to the poultry section to get the Perdue buy 1 get 2 free chicken breasts packages, but I didn't see the sale sign. When I inquired, I was told that it's up to the store individually regarding some of the sales. Would you know, I picked up one of the circulars for this specific store and it looked almost identical to mine, with the exception of the chicken sale?! Interesting. Needless to say, I only stop in here if returning bottles and cans or in need of only a few things. I won't come back for a weekly shopping trip. read more

Buyer beware. Just in the last month I've had bad seafood salad, bad stuffed mushrooms, steaks that were spoiling, strawberries going bad and today they messed up the birthday cake I ordered. This place use to be great but lately their food safety seems off and poorly trained staff. After today I am done shopping here. I am little concern with the fact I bought from this grocery store some bananas, Apples and more... But what I'm most disappointed in is how I bought what look like at first, fresh bananas :( But a couple days later I had it turning purple/black color on the inside and I soon realised it was rotten . Literally had these bananas for not even three days (Two Days). Lgit what a waste. I the fact I kept these outside NOT IN THE FRIDGE made it even more weird how it went spoiled so fast (CRAZY sad-.) As a Branford resident for the past 15 years, I have come to cherish Big Y. It is both an aesthetic and culinary pleasure, particularly since the recent face-lift and expansion of gourmet offerings. The breads, pies. cakes and cookies are all dangerously tempting The seafood is particularly rewarding--varied, fresh, and there's always a good sale on one or other variety. While the picked lobster is eye-wateringly pricey, a little goes a long way in upgrading a dish and the store's premade lobster mac and cheese is surprisingly delicious. Snazzy brands--from D'Artagnan meats to Arethusa ice cream-- are great aspirational splurges. I decided to write this, only my second Yelp review, after visiting the new neighboring market, Aldi. The prices are pretty good for the Northeast Coast. The pork is always a good deal. I just bought a house just half a mile from the Big Y. Great location for those living in Branford Point because I also like that they have the handicapped spot for Purple Heart Recipients. It just seems like a great impact to the area to have one of those even if the spot is only occupied a couple times a week. There are enough spots in the parking lot where you can spare a few of those. There are a few things I have issues with: -They should invest in a cart gate in the area to the right of the store (near the Children's Place, Payless Shoes, etc.) because I always park on that side & it seems like nobody ever takes their cart back to the entrance. Multiple times in just my 3 months here I will return three carts when I enter because I don't want my car getting dinged by those stray carts. -Have at least one automated check-out. Seems like too many stores in the Northeast don't get it: I want to check out quicker & bag my own stuff in a speedy fashion. Maybe I am too used to automated check-outs in Michigan where all the supermarkets are big enough that they are slammed with the people who have 12 or less items & not everybody shops for a family of 4 for a whole weeks of food. -Biggest pet-peeve is that the sale prices & clearance prices aren't always scanned what they say on the shelves. About three times so far I have checked my receipt when I come home to realize that the price I was charged was the regular price & not the sale price the shelf listed it as. One time it was a BOGO for Perdue chicken. I thought $8 for two 2lb bags of chicken was a great deal. Bought it, then got home to find out that the second one was charged the regular price. Would never had bought it if I were paying full-price for the two bags. Another time they listed those frozen burritos on clearance for $3. I bought four bags, got home & saw I was charged the regular price of $5. You would think that this would equate to a 2 or 3 star since the prices aren't always as they seem, but the place is a great location for me & the prices are about what they are in the big stores like Kroger or Meijer. It is probably the only place I will go to get groceries. I don't have to take any detour from work to come here. And also, there is a girl behind the counter in the seafood area that is always really nice to everyone. The people that work there are nice people. The 4* rating is probably more because how close it is to my house. On the weekend if I want to go shopping I don't have to waste 15 minutes of driving to go to the Stop & Shop. If you're having a party it is just a two minute drive to the store & hope that you don't get stuck behind a bunch of slow people feeding a family of 4. read more

This review is for the Branford Big Y store. I literally live two minutes from the Branford store, but will drive completely out of my way and go to the Big Y in North Branford, because of the negative feeling I get whenever I walk into the Branford store. What is the problem with the Branford store? The cashiers are not uniformly nice or friendly, maybe on a given day, but not consistently, and excuse me. Has the Big Y in Branford ordered their cashiers not to bag groceries anymore? I will bag my own groceries whenever I can, but my sister is disabled. After a male cashier rung her up one day, he leaned back against his counter and didn't lift a finger to bag a single grocery for her. Fortunately I was there to bag for her, but he didn't even help me. He simply continued to lean against his counter and stare into space. And my sister is visibly disabled. Unbelievable. The Big Y in North Branford, however, is completely different. Everyone is so nice, friendly, helpful, and their pharmacy department is phenomenal. I know other people who have shopped at both stores, and they say the same thing about the Branford Big Y. I won't shop there unless I absolutely need something in the moment. Otherwise I'll drive much further, to North Branford, for a much nicer shopping experience, with better employees who actually help their customers. read more

This is NOT a review about Big Y, the grocery store. People in Connecticut know about Big Y. It has a nice selection of fresh food, but we all know they are a little overpriced. We're supposed to get our money back from coupons that expire in 2 weeks or by using those silver and gold coins, the ones we never seem to have on us in the first place. No... this review is just about their SUPERB sushi bar that they have in Branford, Ct. I will say it again. Big Y in Branford, Ct has the BEST sushi bar of any grocery store. The sushi chefs are always very nice and willing to make any kind of sushi roll for you fresh and to your liking. They really go out of their way to make sure you are absolutely pleased. Domo arigatou gozaimasu :) However, most Big Y grocery stores DO NOT have good sushi bars. Most Big Y stores have sub par sushi bars, the sushi being manufactured in a factory near by. But, the Big Y in Branford just happened to buy out the other grocery store, which already had the excellent sushi bar. If Big Y was smart, they would read this review, notice how much revenue is generated from its Sushi Bar in Branford, and plan to install additional sushi bars with super friendly sushi chefs :) read more

I live right down the street from Big Y, so it's very convenient to go to you. however, I absolutely despise going there. Staff are rude and outright belligerent at times, prices are insanely high, and the customers are miserable (quite possibly because of the two above mentioned). Every time I leave there I swear I'll never go back. You'd think I'd learn... One time when I was 9 months pregnant I went there to grab a couple of things and when i came out it was snowing. Since there are only 2 places to put your carts and. I was on the opposite side of the lot and no where near those locations, i put my cart on the side of the curb just like everyone else was doing. As I was getting into my car one if the workers who collects the cart ran up to me and began yelling at me "You can't leave your cart here! What's wrong with you? It's not that hard! "I got into my car shocked and he just wouldn't stop. Actually yelling at me so loud people passing by were looking in surprise. I cried the whole way home. The people behind the deli are rude and practically through your meat at you. The cashiers barely acknowledge you and when they do they have a snotty attitude. And on top of all of that you're paying top dollar for mediocre items that you can get for half the price at stop and shop. I'm just going to drive the extra couple of minutes and go to east haven. They offer a decent selection of deserts and hors d'oeuvres. For other items they tend to have a rather limited selection. Be very careful about looking at the date for their breads and fruits. This store has no problem putting out bread that goes bad the next day or fruits that go bad the day of sale. It's really close to our house, so if you only need a couple of things, it doesn't make sense to go farther afield to East Haven or the far end of Branford to one of the Stop & Shops, but every time I end up at Big Y, I hate it. First of all, some things are priced normally, and some things are insanely expensive. According to our friends, if you have a store card and you play the inane gold and silver coin game, the prices are fine. However, there is no way I'm going to carry around gold and silver coins for one grocery store all of the time, just to have them handy when I stop by my local grocery store. Older woman checks me out. I'm putting articles on the conveyor belt she's ringing up. I put the card in, she gives me my slip. "Have a nice day". Have a nice day? I agree with the other people who wrote here that morons work here.  I went to Branford Big Y today and received HORRIBLE Service.  The deli area had about 8-10 people waiting to be served. I took a 'number' as they were totally to incompetent to put a NOT Working sign up for it.   Waiting,,,, Waiting...  finally called the store on my cellphone to explain that one older woman was washing mixing bowls, another packaging fruit salads or something to put out on shelves while 8-10 customers still waiting.  These two and a few other employees  totally acted like they didn't see.  Or Didn't CARE.                            A rude young man came, I asked him for two prepared food items and  said something about the wait and lack of service.  He wanted to argue with me. He stated they are shorthanded. (Does that include the two or more not waiting on customers?)                          Customers are not top priority here.  We are a bother to them   .  I said I'm not here to argue, I just want service.  He then said he refused to help me !  I asked or a store manager and he told we, " we never said customers are not important." Apparently, he missed the class also that customers are why they have a job and treat customers with respect.  Condescending and rude also. The prices are decent my only complaints are the deli meats taste a little over processed and the summer berries are rarely ever ripe (brown) and expensive. If you eat sandwiches every day I'd get my meat from some place else. Had a good cut of filet at a decent price. Was visiting from out of state and needed a few things. Before I walked in both of the outside garbage cans were full. That should've been my first sign. Once I was inside the floor must've never been swept. The bathroom floors were sticky, and there was no toilet paper. It was outrageous. I asked an employee, Preston where olive oil is and I got a rude "I'm busy ask someone else." I literally almost walked out of the store. I was checking out and the chip in my card has been malfunctioning and sometimes I have to put it in multiple times. We decided to stay in tonight, December 31, because we are traveling abroad in two days. I thought a duck might be a good choice for dinner, and bought a D'Artagnan Rohan Duckling for our dinner, at the Branford store, may I add, just for ourselves, thank goodness we had no guests. Now I know the meaning of "rubber duck". I am very definitely a senior, and have cooked many a duck, in different countries and continents. I thought from the word go that this animal was suspect - it did not look quite like others I have cooked - the neck was attached (which I had never seen before) and in general, the whole thing had a different, greyish look. I cooked it according to instructions and knew right away there was a problem. It was very difficult to split, and the legs were glued to the body - no wriggling at all. Once on our plates, I produced serrated steak knives and even so we had sore hands after doing battle with it. Fortunately, we have a sense of humour and decided that the flavour was good. We are also lucky enough to have all our teeth at our advanced age. Although I cannot say it was a great meal, I will still wish all a very happy New Year read more
