Big Y apparently does not offer hand baskets anymore? Of course, you have to bring your own bags or pay for paper bags that fall apart. The prices here are much higher than Shaws in Sturbridge. Their deli has a limited selection and is priced insanely high. And the people stocking the shelves will not move to allow you to get items off the shelves. I like the Palmer Big Y very much! They have a wide selection of meat at a fair price and their weekly sales keep me shopping there. Very bold cashiers. Jeanne made several comments about ice cream/ bakery items in my order. Saw baby and made comment that cravings for the items I purchased should be over by now. I assume the manager was the one bagging. Didn't say anything. It was extremely embarrassing to be called out on what was in my cart when I'm paying for it. read more

I live in Palmer and I've been to this Big Y many times and it's not very good. I think most people in town would agree. The thing is they don't have to be good because they are the only grocery store in town. They never have enough people working the registers. It's a guarantee that their produce is often moldy or bad. I've experienced this so often that at this point I only stop here if I can't wait til the weekend to make a trip to a quality supermarket or a farmers market. read more

I remember going to Big Y when I was kid visiting my family in the Palmer area. At the time, it seemed like a slightly more ruralish version of the grocery stores we had in our area. Not as much selection, a little more rundown, and a slightly foreign-feeling customer base. Fast forward to today and I'm a little shocked at how much nicer it's become. While the customer base actually feels even more foreign to me now, the store itself outpaces the improvements made at other stores near my family in central Mass. The selection too also appears to have made some leaps and bounds. One of the most impressive changes, oddly enough, was in the bathroom. They have invested in top of the line facilities. May not seem like a big deal, but really, who doesn't appreciate a clean, well-functioning lavatory? So next time in I'm Palmer, maybe I will make a point to buy a few things at Big Y just to marvel at their improvements. read more

The first thing walking in is a field of flowers. Who doesn't like looking at lots of flowers with Gerber daises ,sun flowers, orchids, lily's, or whatever is in season. The variety is awesome. Next I love seeing the fruits & veggies. Especially organic fruits & veggies, local grown. The lunch meats & cheese selections are top shelf. Also I can always find my brand name foods & what a variety. I got the bakery cause why not, before check out. Although I would suggest moving the coffee to the entrance with donuts, because who doesn't like dipping coffee eating pastries while shopping. Fyi if there is a power outage, they are open, with a truck generator. What's not to love. read more

I actually have no problem with this Big Y, whatsoever. Granted, I have limited purchasing experience here, as we only stop in on our way to the Swift River for a day of kayaking. We enjoy a picnic lunch almost every weekend, and Big Y Palmer helps us achieve that. Our usual purchases: fried chicken, a deli "side" item, some fresh fruit and a bag of chips. The fried chicken is always terrific. It's never dried out, and every time we go, someone has been bringing out new 8 piece combo bags or rotisserie chickens. Their deli side items are hit-or-miss, especially the pasta salads: the tri-color rotini was too oily and the spinach-gemelli pasta was underseasoned. A little more parmesan/pecorino romano and some pepper would go a long way. The fresh pre-cut fruit was affordably priced ($2.50), but seemed unripe when we opted for the watermelon. Very crunchy with little flavor, like it was part of the rind. I guess to me what makes this place worthy of 4 stars is the service. Every time I'm back at the deli counter, there's always a team of employees ready to help. Even the other customers are polite and helpful, helping locate utensils and napkins. I avoid the check-out lines at the front, which usually aren't that long anyway, by paying back at the deli counter. Although the summer is winding down, this Big Y will remain on our radar for next year, where it's just a quick stop off the road-- and easy in and out-- for nabbing some picnic supplies. read more

Well about a year ago I said "good bye" big y, but I was visiting friends in Palmer for the forth of July holiday and just needed one thing from a grocery store. So since big y is the only store in town I'll just stop there real quick for the frozen strawberries that my friend asked me to pick up on the way to her house because she didn't have enough for her recipe. So I walk in head to the frozen aisle and "WOW" no frozen strawberries. So I happen to see an employee and ask if there is any and they said "yes most likely buried under a pallet". So I said "oh ok". He said "the organic ones are right here and only $.50 more". So instead of getting me the item I wanted he offered me something more expensive and something I didn't want. Yeah no thanks big y. That was your chance. Not having it, nor do I miss you. There is an IGA down the road who had what I needed. Oh and by the way if my friend forgets to buy something for her next event I'll stop at the IGA if she needs something. It's on my way anyway. read more

I usually dread going to the grocery store - but every single time I go to this Big Y I always have SUCH a nice experience! Their produce is fresh and they always have a really good selection of regular grocery items - especially for babies and toddlers. They always have exactly what I'm looking for - and I love that. Also - what makes this place exceptionally awesome is their customer service. Every time I go to check-out there's a register ready and waiting for me. Always a clean conveyor belt and always a smiling face at the register. I'm always treated with kindness by the cashier and the bagger and they say "Have a nice day" and I feel like they actually MEAN it! Also - I was throwing a gender reveal party for my sister in law and needed some floral blooms for some DIY centerpieces we were doing. Local florist didn't have carnations or baby's breath (what?!) but I called Big Y - got to speak to a person right away in the floral department and she was super sweet and helpful AND had exactly what I was looking for and set it aside for me to pick up! This place does not disappoint. Most Big Y's are generally great - but this one is BY FAR my favorite - and my favorite place to shop. Sure I might pay a little more than I would at Walmart in Ware, but it's completely worth it to have such great customer service and to purchase good quality produce and grocery items. I saw that this Big Y was rated 1 star and had to chime in. I have had great experiences at this store. While they don't always have specialty items that I am looking for (tahini paste, fish sauce, etc) I have been surprised at what they do carry (dried ancho & chipotle chillies, fresh collards, locally grown options). Regardless of what I am trying to find, someone ALWAYS helps me look for it or apologizes for not carrying the item and offers to order it. So two stars just for service! Despite the pictures posted, I have always found fresh produce. They also have great deals on all the regular stuff and the best seasonal items around. read more
