Awful- always out of stock. I've started calling it Big Y Bother. even when you called to see if they have stock, they tell you to just come in and check. I said no I'm calling to find out if you have what I need because you're always out of stock oh yeah try us back tomorrow maybe we'll have it then. So I called back a week later if they say they have it and they'll put it on hold and they didn't have it. They didn't check and they didn't put it on hold. About five other things I needed were also out of stock. There's something weird going on at the store. They don't have the supply they need for the area or they don't have the people to stock their shelves. read more

I've been coming to this Big Y for quite some time now and it's time for a review. Even though it's a little out of the way compared to a couple of stores much closer to me, I got to the point where it became my preference. Always clean, appropriate number of cashiers, fresh produce and well stocked in every section. One of the most amazing things about Big Y is the bakery section. I love the freshly made snowball rolls and omg the Paczki doughnuts are to die for! I hadn't really considered myself a jelly donut person but these have definitely changed my perspective. I recently tried their fish and chips and was also pleasantly surprised. They offer other hot food items in different sections and even delicious looking sushi. The only downside for me is the deli section. They do not offer Boars Head and I found the sliced meat I've tried to be subpar to that. So, unfortunately I'll have to go local if I want deli meat which luckily isn't often. read more

Covid-19 era review: Lots of sales, lots of local goods, lots of prepared foods...this clean, shiny supermarket has everything you need. It's like Stew Leonard's took over a Stop 'n Shop. The staff are friendly, the bakery glorious (pre-boxed/bagged a la cart in the self-serve case), the meat counter staff were quick, and the floor is smooth and the carts well maintained, a delightful drive. The friendly cashiers were quick! I didn't have to bag a thing. The weekday customers generally paid attention to direction arrows. I miss the gold/silver coins and the coin game when you enter your membership number; I still have a gold coin I never cashed in. Oh well. Also, the bell to ring when you're pleased is (presently?) gone, but it was still a painless grocery trip. read more

This Big Y location is my favorite. I think it has the best grab and go meal / snacks available compared to other Big Y locations and also other surrounding grocery stores. There is a deli counter where they make sandwiches and they have slices of pizza to go. They also have pre packaged sandwiches and salads available right next to the counter. They have cooked and heated soup available (chicken noddle is my fav). The pre made sushi there is fresh and tastes amazing!! There is a decent organic section in this store with options for all dietary needs (gluten free, diary free etc). The store also makes available precut and spiralized veggies allowing you to eliminate this step from meal prep which makes preparing healthy meals at home much easier! Only downside, they don't have a self checkout. Sometimes you can time it and get through lines quickly. Other times it may take a few minutes. The cashiers are always friendly so it's not a huge downside. read more

Big Y in Rocky Hill does not have self checkout scales, their computer systems don't prompt you to place your items on the table nor is there a sign to do so. However, today just as I was about to pay, I was told to take all the items I had already scanned in my cart out of my basket, place them on the table, pay and then put them back in my basket. When I asked why, I was told because it's Big Y's policy. Shouldn't I have been told the policy that wasn't clearly displayed and then asked to follow it in the future instead of some power trip to have me perform a point task as some kind of punishment? I will not return to any Big Y in the future. read more

So i venture to Big Y almost daily to grab either a sandwich, soup or a slice of pizza. Lately it has been very challenging to get an associate to even acknowledge you are standing there waiting! When the associate did look over he said to me, " You need to wait, i have to get another pizza in the oven after i finish making this one" Ok so i thought it's a bad day and everyone has them including myself. Unfortunately this is an ongoing problem here, all the associates are the same, either complaining they are over worked, underpaid, or complaining they are understaffed! I have to say being in retail these folks have very poor people skills. Why bother having this take out food service if you cannot help the customer. I go to WestSide now! read more

So I've been shopping at the RH Big Y for the past 3 years. I have been meaning to get a review in for a while now. Today's visit gave me that push, and not in the normal Big Y way. Let me start with all the positives, then I'll go back up to the reason for the 4 stars. The cashiers are unlike any other grocery store cashiers. THEY'RE NOT ON THEIR CELL PHONES!!! Go into any other store and you'd understand. Not to mention how super helpful they are. Nice to see the younger generation doing what's expected of them. The floral dept is awesome and they're super helpful. When the re-wrap an arrangement for me, it's like they're going to give it to their own grandma! Additionally, the people in the meat department are always looking to help. So, here's my reason for finally reviewing. Tonight I went in at a slow pace, just to make sure I didn't miss anything on my list or that was on sale. Unfortunately a manager, was discussing LOUDLY, policies to 2 employees. In front of the store, between the registers and the aisles. Are you serious?! This conversation was so loud and even more inappropriate. I'm so bummed for the other 2 employees getting what seemed to be, reamed out-IN FRONT OF EVERYONE IN THE STORE. C'mon. SMH. read more

Today's visit to Big Y was very pleasant. The store was clean, the shelves were well stocked, and every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. Despite the presence of self check lanes, several cashier staffed lanes were open. We brought our own bags and, for the first time in 60+ years of shopping, a cashier asked me how heavy I would like the bags. This was very thoughtful of her. I was helping her bag and a manager came over and completed the task for me. Definitely recommend this store! read more

I know it's a chain, but man, I really like Big Y. I'm always happy with their produce selection (both organic and non-organic) and their fresh fish department, which are both things that I can be a little fussy about. The store is always clean and the aisles are well labeled. Another big draw for me is that they have peanut butter and almond butter that you grind yourself! I'm always a sucker for that, especially the honey peanut butter. I fill that container to the top and prance away thinking of all of the tasty adventures that we'll have together. There's just something about that consistency that gets me every time! Some other highlights are the extensive natural/gluten free section, which I catch myself gawking endlessly at every time, the freshly squeezed orange juice in the produce section and the great selection of everything else, including yogurt and non-dairy products, and frozen and prepared foods. I also really love that they sell local products and market them as such. For example, there is a locally made dish detergent that I've started buying for that reason (and it's a good product, so i continue to buy it). So it is a supermarket, but if you have to visit one, why not make it one that feels more like a local hometown grocery store? Just don't take the last of that honey peanut butter. read more

I had a very large catering order this past week and could not be more impressed with the quality customer service received from the Rocky Hill location. Communication, courteousness, efficiency are all departments in which they truly excelled. I called the day prior to reconfirm and each department knew exactly who I was and what I ordered, were able to confirm we were all set and sincerely thanked me for my business and for choosing them during my hard times, while sending condolences. Not only did Ryan, I believe the produce manager, greet me in the bakery, he brought the produce order over to the sandwich area and proceeded to not only streamline my checkout in the floral area, but to bring almost all of the carts to my car for me. His help was so instrumental. The gentleman in the sandwich area was so kind and friendly. He had 24 platters plus organized and ready to go and because of his preparedness, we were able to load methodically and quickly. The lady in the florist was even happy to help make any accommodations for an easier check out. Needless to say the food was amazing! I can't Thank You enough! We had shopped at the Big Y in Rocky Hill for years and we have now given up on it completely. The prices are good, but when I bring food home with expiration dates of a week or more out I don't want to take them out of the bag and find them already expired. On three separate occasions milk has gone bad a week before expiration... which is a sign that someone left the milk out and unrefrigerated and the fact that this is happening more and more often makes me wonder about how the food there is handled. We have also had cold cuts actually go bad after only a day or two. Also, the quality of their meats are awful. I have bought chicken on numerous occasions that was supposed to be trimmed and ready to cook only to spend an immense amount of time cleaning fat and cartilage from it and then once cooked, it was stringy and almost inedible. The produce is so-so and the bakery could be better (with the exception of the Lyman's Orchard products they get shipped in which are good). I have contacted Big Y to complain. The first time they contacted me and promised to make it right asked for my contact info. I never heard back. I contacted them again and never heard back. If this is the way Big Y handles their food and customers then I'll go elsewhere. read more

Excellent fish & chips, onion rings and calamari. All made fresh to order. Surprisingly great! Also the bakery is outstanding. Whenever we have a cake for an event, people love it and are shocked when we tell them it's from Big Y. Their donuts are some of the best! The pizza and chicken wings are good! The have party packages which are a great value! The also have a large all natural section, which extends to beauty products....Hello tea tree oil.... And they have some of the nicest cashiers EVER! The good: pharmacy gave me a free (cheap) script, but after taking a very long time fooling around with my insurance card. and um... I can't think of anything else particularly good about this place. The bad: prices aren't great. There is a sale here and there that's decent (like 2/$6 cereals, but pretty much every grocery store runs these once in a while). I think the selection is pretty poor. The organic/local produce is not impressive, considering there are plenty of farms around, and it's not organized together. The natural foods/organic/gluten free etc section is extremely small. If you're vegetarian you may want to go elsewhere. For protein, for example, there are just a few veggie burgers and sausage. I am irritated by the coin rewards system. I carry a wallet. Who has room to bring giant silver and gold coins around with them? Every other store just tracks your rewards for you automatically. Using fake coins is inconvenient and wasteful. read more

Big Y always has the stuff I need. They have a good produce section, a variety of hot and cold lunch choices, and even a good selection of beer. If you have a Big Y card, specifically Silver status, you will save a good amount of money. My absolute biggest problem however is standing in line, every time I go, no matter when I go. I am always standing in a long, long line because there is hardly ever more than two cashiers working at any one time, and they do not have self-checkout. So while you may enjoy your trip like I typically do, be prepared to wait in line. read more

Worst shopping experience in my life! Not only was a cashier and guest rude to me. I tried to purchase an Xbox gc with cash and was told I can only purchase a gc if I have a big y store card? I was paying cash? I asked for the manager he was no help just stated it was the policy. I told him there was no disclaimer on the gc display, he just shrugged. Well they lost my business I spent about $600 a month in grocery's. I only went there because I was gifted a big Y gift card. Never again I'll be sure to tell all my friends. I had the worst experience there yesterday! After a hectic day, me and the husband decided we'd order a pizza while we grocery shop, so we head to the Pizza Counter upon arrival & were literally ignored by 2 employees behind counter for 10 Minutes. Finally the younger man says (yelling from back of the house) "You here to order or pick up"?, I said order and he shouted "It's gonna be a while" I asked to take my order? He replied "Yes" I asked, how long? He said "6:10 or 6:15"....mind you it was 5pm! He was telling me it would be an hour & 15 Minutes to take my order. Do not usually shop here ran in since I needed chicken and rice for my sick dog. Big dinner plate size signs in the meat counter over the chicken tenders buy one get one free and touting how much cheaper that was than the other large store in the area. Get to the check out cashier rings purchase up both packages ring in "I thought it was buy one get one free?" only if you have a card "the sign did not say that" sorry you have to have a card. Now at the other large market they routinely swipe savings cards through for those who don't have one. No time to argue or ask for manager with a sick dog home but I will never ever shop there again. read more

Big Y is so much better than Stop & Shop! The prices are probably very similar, but Big Y runs much better sales. I also find that the shelves are always stocked, which is a welcome relief from Stop & Shop. Three days before Christmas, I went to our local Stop & Shop and there was literally NO sour cream in the store; plenty of other staples were sparse as well. The next day, I went to Big Y to finish up my shopping for Christmas dinner and despite the fact that the store was packed, the shelves were stocked and there were plenty of workers stocking as I went through the store. I love the variety and quality of food here. Despite the drive for us (8 miles), this is definitely our go-to grocery store. read more

I live right across the street from here and having lived in places where a grocery store, much less a quality one was nearby, I very much value and enjoy this Big Y. If you have a Silver Card, which is free, you can get great savings on all sorts of products all over the store, even on some good brands. The Big Y brand is also a good choice if you're shopping on a budget, it's the same stuff as the big brand products but 1/2 the price or maybe even less. The cashiers are all perky high school kids or sour faced old women, I'll usually go to the high school kids because they haven't been crushed by the empty meaning of life yet and give good customer service. There is also a bell which you can ring if you received good customer service but everyone is too shy to ring it even though the customer service here is generally quite good. GI haven't been to West Side Market down the street yet but I would like to do a side by side comparison. read more

I was very disappointed today as I was paying for my groceries the cashier, her name was Theresa and her cashier # is 4391, she was the most despicable woman on the face of earth, by not giving me my change back, acted as if "forgot" but when I checked the receipt she hadn't even put the amount of money I gave her in case I was upset and talked to the manager, I asked for the money and she had her hand on the drawer ready to see if I don't ask for my change back so she would then close the drawer and put my money on her pocket later. The meat department is excluded from this review. The customer service is lacking.....the deli department seems to have employees that are very unhappy with their jobs. I hate asking for more than a couple of items in fear of bothering them. They don't smile and seem angry all the time. Same goes for the pizza department....they act as if you are bothering them with the sour look on their faces. The booth in the front of the store where a couple of front end employees stand also unfriendly....they are always too busy talking so when you go to ask a question they act like you are interupting them. I'm sorry but I thought they are their to service customers????? Maybe there are issues behind the scenes but time to retrain. The meat department is always so helpful and will stop whatever they are doing to assist.
