I had a little free time yesterday and treated myself to a trip to D & D. I browsed in all the departments and bought a little of this, a little of that. The fresh minestrone soup was sensational. I got a small order in the deli, produce and bakery. All the crew is super helpful, patient and efficient. Once I got to work, I ate the soup for lunch. Lucky me. Very, very disappointed. We ordered a deli platter for Christmas. We waited over an hour for it, as it was not ready. Nothing special at all, VERY skimpy amount of meat and cheese. The old Bliss Market is now home to D&D Market and although the name is different the experience one gets while walking through the aisles remains the same. This location of D&D is their second location and a lot of what you might find in their Hartford location can also be found here. If you are looking for fresh pasta and other Italian specialties, this is the place to be. As with it's former owners, D&D continues to have an excellent meat counter with not only steaks and chicken but a wonderful selection of sweet and hot flavored pork and chicken sausages as well pre-made beef patties. On the day I went I was able to pick up ground white meat chicken and chuck which made some wonderful burgers later in the day. I also picked up several sides - coleslaw, a pasta salad, a vegetable salad and some pre-grilled vegetables - which paired wonderfully with our burgers. And lest I forget dessert - they sell cupcakes from Nora and Italian pastries - and a few of those were picked up as well. I could also see my self coming back during the week when I did not feel like cooking as the pre-cooked chicken cutlets, lasagna and sausage pasta looked very tasty In addition D&D has a well stocked deli, a small produce section and a good selection of non-perishable food items. We ordered a 3lb Centercut beef tenderloin and (our mistake) trusted D&D's reputation and never looked at the cut of meat when we picked it up...for $20/lb if you have to check quality you should be shopping someplace else. On Christmas Eve night we opened the meat to stuff and roll it in advance of cooking it for Christmas dinner. What we found was a fatty End cut of meat not really suitable for stuffing and rolling. With no choice, we made due and did the best we could so as not to ruin Christmas dinner. In frustration we emailed D&D and sent them a picture of the meat expressing our disappointment at not receiving the Centercut we ordered. To our amazement we heard back that what we had was a Centercut. Three opinions from three professional chefs confirm that without a doubt the obvious was correct...we ordered and paid for Centercut and received an unsuitable end cut and when politely asked about this, D&D doubled down and insisted it was a Centercut which only proves one of two things...either D&D doesn't know crap about quality cuts of meat or they are unremarkable liars. Either way, I hope they enjoyed the one hit money they made off of us because when we pay for quality we expect it so we won't be going back and D&D can continue to BS customers and lose them one at a time. read more

All the same stuff as at their original Franklin Ave location - all the same phenomenal arancini, meatballs, sausage, cutlets, stuffed breads, sauce, pasta, grinders, selection of meats and cheeses, everything that made their name what it is. Some people have stores where they always end up spending far more than they intended. D&D is that for me. I'll walk in telling myself that I'm just going to pick up a few things, and before I know it I've loaded my basket (or, more frequently, cart) with everything from behind the glass that caught my eye. I don't mind. It's money well spent. If I had to recommend just ONE thing from here, it would be the arancini. I've had a lot of that from Italian grocers and restaurants, in the Hartford area and elsewhere, and D&D's still stands out as the best. Fortunately, I don't have to recommend just one thing, so make sure you check out their meatballs and sausage as well, in a grinder, if you like. So glad to see them sticking with it in Wethersfield. Stopped in for lunch and ordered a grinder at the deli . These used to be the best when they were on Franklin Avenue. The girl sliced some meat and then proceeded to place it on a scale to weigh it. The grinder had a small portion of meat on it and cost me $9.56 . What a rip off that grinder was the girl had made for me . As I was waiting for the grinder to be made I looked in the case behind me at the prepared foods . All looked old and dried up , very unappetizing. Seems to me that the children took over the business and are not keeping up the quality and effort to run the business as it was in the past. A customer since the early 60's living in Wethersfield, and still today, 25 minutes away. When our workplace moved into a 4 story building in Hartford, our staff of 100 relied on "D & D" for our lunch supplies for months, until the building's coffee shop was constructed and opened. Mid morning M - F, someone would drive down to D & D to pick up supplies for the day, and prepare a small buffet for a Daily noontime "Make Your Own Sandwich". It worked great, everything was high quality and fresh, and the initial price was set at $.35. As I recall, since generous portions became the rule, how could you not, $.40 became the standard price for the honor system, which also included 24 hr. coffee @ $.10 cup. Even at that price, the "operation" continued successfully until the building filled, and the coffee shop opened up, leaving only a 24 hr. Coffee Club, required because of the 365 day in house computer operation. read more

Sure it had some hiccups when it first opened in this location, don't all businesses? Obviously some people don't give the benefit of the doubt! Everyone is always pleasant and cheerful. The butchers know their stuff! How to cook it and for how long. It's sausage heaven here too! All homemade and natural casings. Salads are fresh and yummy...pricy but if you want quality you're going to pay for it! We can walk here and we love doing just that. Looks like they might have invented some type of self disinfecting cart and carriage. There was no one cleaning anything at all. Honestly the food here isn't My problem. My problem lies in that I have been a customer for 16 years starting in the Hartford market. And when d and d took over began using this location. I brought my five-year-old daughter to buy dinner and cookies after school. Like a normal child, she had to use the bathroom. The store flat out refused to allow her to use their bathrooms. I was told to take her down to Burger King all the way on the Silas Dean and then come back to pick up my food. I have never been to a community market that has not allowed at least patron's children to use the bathroom. I probably spend over $2000 a year here.
