I don't think I've ever written a review for a grocery store but this place came through for us twice on vacation so here we are! We had a large crowd to feed after a long day at the beach and just wanted a few party side pizzas. We called around to all of the local pizza places and Big Y was the only place that would do them without 6 hours notice. We wouldn't have even thought of them but a local recommend we call them. We saved at least $100 by ordering here. Their party size cheese(40+ pieces) was the same prices as the large cheese pizzas that only had 10 slices at two other local pizza places. Another evening we decided we wanted lobsters. Called Big y to check prices and they were able to do 6 steamed lobsters 20 minutes after we called! We grabbed some, oysters, corn and potatoes and we were devouring our amazing meal less than an hour later for a fraction of what it would have cost to eat lobster out for 7 people. The steamed lobsters stayed very hot in the bags while we prepped our other food. The groceries may be a little pricier than average here but check out the extras that they offer for sure! read more

Food and sales here are great. I am so grateful to have this store here since it is so far above the many Stop and Shop locations in the area regarding food freshness and quality. I am not a great fan of most of the meat selections and go to McQuades for most of them, but for most other items, shopping their circular every week is a true bargain and plethora of good deals. read more

Well I ended up paying $3.00 for a peach and $3.00 for a nectarine that we're both harder than a rock! We shop here all the time. This Big Y is very clean. They just finished adding a new front entrance that brings you into the floral area as you enter their store. They have a great selection of fresh produce from local farms. That's one thing we really like about this particular Big Y. They support local businesses by showcasing some of their products. I have been going to Big Y for many years. The environment is clean and organized and I have found the fruit and produce to be fresh and of food quality. I don't recall ever having difficulty with expired food. Overall the staff hired is friendly and courteous and I typically don't have to wait in line very long to checkout because they have ample staff ready to assist their customers. BigY usually makes decent pizza but I was somewhat disappointed with my order today. I ordered a large pizza with half buffalo chicken and half BBQ chicken. It came with small bits of fried chicken tenders taken from the hot wing bar, scattered on the pizza with a squirt of Frank hot sauce for the buffalo chicken side and a squirt of BBQ sauce on the other half. The pizza was dry and I could barely see or taste any presence of mozzarella cheese. I like their original topping better where they use rotisserie chicken and the pizza had a substantial buffalo sauce base and generous amount of cheese. The BBQ chicken topping could be improved with a substantial BBQ sauce base and some bacon pieces. read more

Needed to redeem cans and bottles, got started and machine stopped working. Buzzed the service desk to let them know. Customer service person was very gruff and disrespectful. Not sure if she thought I was someone down and out on my luck and was just cashing in on cans that I found or not but totally inappropriate. Told me someone would be out to fix the machine. Gave up after 10 minutes. If you don't like working with the public you should find another job that better suites your personality. Went in to the service desk to turn in my slip from the machine that I was able to process and the service person was just as surly and rude. I make the drive from RI to Big Y mostly because it's the closest place that carries Petfresh food for my dogs. They have some other unique items that keep me coming in. The store is laid out well & is easy to navigate. I'm partial to their fruit selection as they sometimes carry local apples from Homlberg Orchards. Decent sized organic selection too. No Boars Head which makes me a little sad. Plus they have beer! Ok, it's not the best selection but sometimes you can find some good local stuff. They also have exclusive brews with Berkshire Brewing Company which are quite solid. They have good deals occasionally so it never huts to get one of their discount cards. Every August we land at Latimer Point (Stonington, CT) for vacation and this Big Y is right up the street. Produce is fresh, seafood is good and all of the standard name brands we normally buy (family of 5) in VA are also available here. Parking is easy and carts / baskets are in the store entrance area and easy to find. Have seen several spills get cleaned up quickly while shopping (broken pickle jar - yesterday) and staff are friendly and polite. This is not a Wegmans, Whole (paycheck) Foods or other "up-market" grocery store so don't expect a mile long display of prepared foods for those with no time to cook. This is a nice, local, mostly clean and well stocked chain grocery store. read more

My friends and I are staying in the area for the weekend and entered this establishment in cheerful moods, only for them to be immediately soured. Not only were customers after customers being unreasonably impolite and quite frankly, very rude to my friends and I, but as we got to checkout the ladies ringing us up and bagging had extremely poor bedside manner. There was two of them, one of them being a woman named Gail, and since we had such bad experiences with the people shopping there, I attempted to be my most polite self, yet she was apparently in a very rotten mood and projected it onto us. Our items were carelessly thrown into the bags, leaving a box of cereal and some bread we had purchased crushed at the bottom. The bags were then either tossed into our cart or negligently flung at us. In all honestly, the only well mannered employees were the people working in the pizza area. What was supposed to a peaceful and exciting summer weekend in a beautiful place, got off on a very hurtful foot. Big Y is constantly promoting a friendly environment, where customers are said to be "treated as family", and when normally we are and can depend on Big Y as a respectful environment, this was the exact opposite. I'm not sure if this coincides with the end of the tourist season (we are still in our first year here) but things seem to be improving here with respect to customer service and the offerings. Shout at to the gentleman at the meat counter today (10/12/15) around 2pm as well as the deli counter. They were very friendly and helpful with my questions. I would say the only problem with my last ten visits since my review is the same kid who checks me out who has a piss poor attitude towards people. Not sure what's up with that. Overall a decent place to go with a healthy meat/seafood counter. read more

I have shopped at Big Y in Mystic since they opened and upgraded our local shopping. Even tho I have to cross the Route 1 drawbridge to get there (a Groton side annex would be great), I am especially happy with the fresh sushi and baked goods, cheese selections, helpful butchers and seasonal flowers. Once I became familiar with the store layout I started to come more often. The sheet party pizza is a big hit with my family and my church family. The selection is good on all the items that we enjoy in our home. The Super Bird is another big hit when "mom" needs a break and I can pick it up. I find the staff friendly and helpful whenever I have asked for directions on where to find an item. read more

I WILL NEVER SHOP HERE AGAIN AND THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER This business is a typical chain grocery store that lacks customer service and respect. I am not saying that the workers at this store lack compassion, but company policies and training definitely need to change. I heard this story from a friend of mine who i was meeting for dinner. Before dinner she went to her closest grocery store (Big Y in Mystic) to get some ingredients for what we would be cooking. She checked out and was walking to her car carrying her paper bag which she paid ten cents for to the car. The bottom of her paper bag broke right by the store, and the continents of her strawberries spilled out. She sent her daughter in to the store to retrieve a paper bag to replace the one the broke. They said that the daughter would have to pay the ten cent tax if she wanted a bag. She had no money to pay so had to go back to her mother empty handed. Back to the strawberries, after they spilt onto the ground, the mother tried to pick them all up. As she was picking them up she noticed there was MOLD all over them. Eventually a kind stranger came out and offered them a reusable bag so they could make it to there car. read more

Great fish department and very helpful pharmacy. Big y has a pretty decent alternative foods selection ie gluten free and organic foods. Pretty good at changing their stuff over as well. If there is something you like they also usually are pretty quick to stock it once you ask. Full service supermarket with prepared foods and a bakery. ATM, coin machine and bottle return. read more

Not sure what Sarah from CA was expecting, but this store is fine. It's not on Rodeo Drive, but still manages to carry a wide variety of products people want, including really good beers even without west coast brands. There were also organic products (@ the same usual high markups that every store charges). Staff went out of their way to be helpful in several departments. Have had many positive shopping experiences at Big Y in general in other locations, and it's great how they give tours to local elementary schools. The problem is this location in regards to their prepared hot food availability and customer service of the employees. Always out of prepared food at all times of day might as well not have the section as you can't rely on it at all. We went to the Big Y in Mystic. Within 5 minutes it was the Big M, Big Mistake. It's not only pricey, it's slippery pricey. A box of crackers is priced 2 for $4. You ask does that mean $2 for one as many chains allow? The clerk's answer is Yes. We picked up one Entenmann crumb cake at 2 for $6. Thanks God we rechecked at cashout. It was $6.87 for the one. Nope! Buy one bottle of Atomic seltzer get two for free. It worked. So you might lower your guard. But Poland Spring water priced at $1.19 was $1.36 before the bottle tax. As newcomers to the area at the checkout we asked the kid to let us use the store affinity card. He started grilling up--how long are you here, how long will you live here? WTF we said. You got $82.00 of groceries on the belt. Want us to walk? He used the store card eyeing us like we were crooks. Any store that touts how great it is before you walk in as Big Y does is often trouble.Big Y is. You'd see more fairness at the Foxwood Casino slots just up the road. We had my daughters 5th birthday in the Mystic Big Y , it was wonderful. Jessica was one of the ladies that helped make it a success. Right from the beginning she was right there to help with anything I needed, from helping with the decorations to getting ice cream for the party. Judy was the other lady that helped. When I walked in to arrange the party she personally walked me over to order the cake, then over to the pizza and then the florist introducing everyone to me. I felt like I had a personal party coordinator. I felt that everything was explained to me and she stayed in touch through the whole proscess. Both ladies cleaned away any thing dirty and asked if there was any thing I needed during the whole party. They were both incredable!!!! Thank you soooooooo much ladies.
