But this is truly a one stop shop as there is a mini restaurant for breakfast, pharmacy, bakery, deli, and all the other regular grocery items. On a short vacation in Mystic, Seaport; went looking for a few items and luckily found McQuades! If you don't have a GPS, you may not find it, it's a little off the beaten path. It's a well-maintained and fully stocked Grocery Store, there's the usual floral department, but it's the Deli, seafood, and bakery that are the Stars of show. The quality, variety and diversity of the products they have is impressive. It reminds me of the old Balducci's in the Village (NYC). Employees, who knew their products, could explain to you what it was, give you recipes, and who knew a happy customer returns over and over again. If you want quality, you sometimes have to pay a little more for it. It's called value for your money. Everything in the cases makes you want to take one of each; even though you know you can't possibly eat it all in one sitting and there's only so much room in your freezer refrigerator! read more

We are visiting friends in the Mystic, Connecticut area. We stayed with them for a nice home cooked meal of swordfish, potatoes, and veggies. Our desserts were from McQuade's. We had blueberry crumble, lemon tart, carrot cake, brownies and brownies with nuts. We each did a flavor taste. The brownies were very chocolatey, the lemon tart delicious, the blueberry crumble with great taste. I did not try the carrot cake. Our hostess said it was a bit dry. read more

This was a cute place I found on yelp and was like let's check it out after the aquarium! Don't do what we did and park at the bottom of the stairs lol. I wanted to kill my husband. It was the hottest day out too! Even our son was like really all these stairs? :P anyway it was a nice market. One of the chocolate milks we did buy went bad before we even drank it but I don't know if that's totally their fault. We mainly stopped here for chocolate milk, apple cider and my hubs was curious about the coffee milk. Allergy season was starting and it's a market so my hubs got that too. In order to escape NYC and the craziness that comes with New Years in Manhattan, I went up to Connecticut for the holidays. A lot of grocery shopping at McQuade's ensued, including buying enough to make for New Years Eve. We ordered the King crab legs from here which were quite small, to the point where there were jokes about "prince crab legs" being thrown around. Despite the size, though, they were delicious. In addition to the crab legs, we found quite a lot here! They were (unfortunately) out of eggnog, but we were able to pick up pistachio and banana bread, tons of spices, fried cauliflower and grilled vegetables. read more

First thing I have to mention, it's really odd to me that this grocery store is literally on a dead end street, hidden behind trees. Never really experienced that before. I love quality focused, small, locally owned grocery stores. The feel and experience is a little different than your large chain stores. I visited McQuade's a couple times while in the area. The store is clean, bright and organized. Both times I visited staff were very friendly and attentive. Prices were more reasonable than I anticipated. Watch out, Google Maps takes you to the bottom. The supermarket is at the top of the hill. If you reach the area with the small stores like Mystified or Crossfit, you can walk up the stairs on the left side. Very standard supermarket with all your needed selection. Seafood in case did not look or smell fresh. They had water dripping on the seafood. They have a lot of refrigerated cooked foods ready to go but who knows how long they've been sitting there. read more

Ive shopped at McQuades numerous times even though i felt there were better sales to be found in the larger local groc stores. Ive always tried to patronize smaller local businesses. This Mystic market's management however leaves a lot to be desired. We noticed the store was not kept clean and yet unbusied staff were not directed to clean food areas when time allowed. The cashier area where food is set on revolving belt for check out was dirty and covered with food remnants. The clam chowder i bought was bad. Our cashier was poorly trained though i saw this as the responsibility of management. Having patronized other well run, cleaner local food markets, i attempted to give constructive feedback to the store manager after having called prior, having a younger staff person answer & state "he couldnt reach the manager but was the closest thing to one. "Upon beginning to share my concerns on cashier, uncleanliness of food belt i was laying groc on..i heard the phone hang up! I honestly thought the call dropped until the same staff answered again and confirmed he had hung up because he didnt want to hear what i had to say which he felt was negative criticism! I then demanded to speak to any manager available and found out one was there but either didnt want to be interrupted or his staff felt it too much effort to reach him. What started out as wanting to give feedback to improve upon to want to continue my shopping patronage, became a very negative experience. Not only did the Manager defend his staff's reason for hanging up the store's Customer Svs line rudely (which theres never a good reason to hang up on customers) but he felt that the constructive criticism wasnt needed-if i had wanted a clean groc belt at cashier's station, i shouldve asked cashier to clean it. My reply was, " i feel you should be instructing staff to sanitize belts as time allows especially given Winter viruses and people's shared area for unpacked FOOD! It being carried over & over on same register belt. In other groc stores, i do not see other customers' food remnants literally crumbled all over belt. I dont have my grocs damaged in packing, i certainly dont get hung up on by staff who are poorly trained in Customer Service. Finally, Management left a very disappointing impression on my spouse & i regarding how feedback was handled. He simply explained away his staff's actions rather than appreciate someone had taken the time to contact him to allow him to rectify store issues & improve upon. Dont get me wrong, there are some great staff too in Deli dept who are terrific we will miss. We wont be patronizing McQuade's Market in Mystic, CT any longer due to unclean sanitary conditions in the visible, high traffic'd areas of store and the indifferent management demeanor to customers' concerns. This market is one i would advise the public to skip. Especially if you like to be treated with respect, appreciation and care about your health. In a time when corp groc franchises offer: better prices, staff shoppers, groc apps allowing pick-up and loading in your car conveniently...sm markets wont thrive with poor Customer Service and unclean environments. Went in for steaks, got a great deal on steaks from their butcher counter. Check out line went quickly. The fellow working the steak counter did not seem particularly knowledgeable about his cuts of steak and was confused when I asked for a NY Strip - I had to point to where they were and explain how I wanted them trimmed, but otherwise this was a satisfactory experience. Today I attempted to return four small holiday plants purchased ten days ago. During the prior three visits to the store, i was told that only "Tracey" the manager could authorize the return. When I finally met her, Tracey immediately resisted refunding my money and was totally against even a store credit. I am totally surprised that McQuades management would employ someone with her attitude and negative demeanor being the family store that they are. As manager of the Mystic Luxury Cinema's, I bring a lot of business to McQuades. We buy all of our birthday cakes and associated party supplies for all our customer theater events. McQuade's is great and I love their selection of artisanal products, but it is not practical for everyday shopping. The selection is limited and the prices tend to be higher than a traditional grocery store. The biggest comparison is Big Y, which people don't understand the differences between both establishments. It is like comparing apples to oranges. I would recommend McQuade's to someone if they want delicious baked goods, pre-made picnic salads, or specialty items. I would not recommend someone to do their weekly grocery shopping or shopping to feed a large amount of people. Their display case of house-made pastries gets me every time. There is a variety of mini-cakes, brownies, and other eye-catching sweets. Their deli does have a limited selection of deli meats, but they do have some interesting options. I was there last week and happened to notice they had a new Boar's Head Mandrasala curry chicken, which was a nice surprise. I was ordering imported prosciutto, which they only have a single brand of. The deli workers were all very pleasant and sliced my meat perfectly. If you are in a pinch and need something quick, I would say make McQaude's your stop. If you need to do a large amount of shopping, I would recommend another option. I think they mainly have them to be a side for their lobster rolls, but you can just order the chips. They gave me a whole styrofoam container of them for $1!!! And they were really good, and even stayed fresh overnight, which is unusual for housemade chips. They'll also let you sample things in the deli. Endless creative salads and other dishes. Recently used them for my wedding and after 6 months of constantly having to harass the catering manager who refuses to respond to emails or telephone calls, they really let me down. The food was good, but my new husband's cologne went missing (subsequently found in a box McQuades took back), they forgot the coffee and tea service that we had spoken at length about the day before, and I just got the bill for the actual hours worked by servers...14! For a 5 hour wedding that was just stationary appetizers that were all gone half way through?? I think not! Good lord. I have never seen so many Volvo station wagons parked in one location. Not even at a Volvo dealership. I would have thought this grocery store would pack up and go out of business quite some time ago. Surprisingly it continues to cling to life, in light of its high prices and its small size (compared to mega supermarkets like Stop 'n Shop). In addition to the crazy Volvo phenomenon, another weird thing occurs in the parking lot. The number of parked cars is always twice or three times the number of people inside the store. Now I can understand some cars belonging to employees, but really, where are the rest of the customers hiding? I can typically count the number of customers inside the building on one hand. It's just weird. Anyway, it's not a bad store. I'll usually go to pick up a pint of soup or a quick sandwich whenever I'm visiting Mystik Village Shops. I haven't had anything from their salad bar but it always looks fresh and they have so many options to build your own salad. So many choices, great quality and paid less than if we went to fast food. Even though there were hot and cold sandwiches, burgers, fried food, seafood, hot food bar, awesome salad bar, and deli items, my picky 7 year old was able to be satisfied because we went into the market and bought him a block of Muenster cheese. My big family each got what they wanted, even polar colas on the refillable fountain. This place was great and we plan to return every time we visit the aquarium. read more

Unfortunately McQuade's supermarket in Mystic is being run like a convenience store. It is not clean, the prices are ridiculously high and the help is clueless. Some people are under the impression this is an upscale market. Not even close. Things might be different in their Westerly location, I am not sure but in Mystic, it is what it is. I think they see that there are a lot of tourists and figure they will never see them again anyway so why not try to steal as much money from them as they can? Big mistake. First of all, It never pays to be a thief. Second, there are actual people that live in Mystic, CT 365 days a year, me being one of those people. If you think that we will just settle for over priced junk because you and the Big Y are the only game in town, you are mistaken. We will travel to other towns and even RI if we have to. The "Italian" deli doesn't even have a natural casing salami? Pitiful The produce is number 2 at best. Was trying to pick out some russet potatoes and couldn't believe all the wrinkled and green potatoes that I had to dig through. Finally gave up. They have potatoes on their shelves that should be in a dumpster. Looked at the cheddar cheese and saw a price of $11.99. Are you kidding me? I can get that same block of cheddar in another market for $4.00 less. YES, the same exact block! Took a look at the chicken case. Lousy and over priced selection and EVERY package was loaded with red liquid and the packages were leaking all over the shelves. What does that tell you when a package of chicken is loaded with liquid? IT ISN'T SELLING! Ben & Jerry's is selling for $5.19 per pint in McQuade's. You have to drive right by the corner convenience store to get to McQuade's and they sell Ben & Jerry's for $4.99 every day of the week. AND they have more flavors! The open "reach in" freezers at McQuade's are a disaster. must be 50 years old. Almost everything in those freezers are freezer burnt. We bought some popsicles a few weeks ago and had to throw them all away. They looked like they melted and froze 10 times over and had a weird taste to them. Check out the fish department! the clams in the case are open. Not one or 2, I counted 2 different kinds of clams that had over 15 of each kind open. That means they are DEAD. We are taught at a very young age to disgard opened clams yet they are proudly displayed in McQuade's seafood cases. The prices of their seafood are ridiculous also and their snail salad should be renamed vegetable salad with a hint of snail. If Dave's Marketplace opens within a 20 mile radios of McQuade's, we will not have to worry about this crap anymore because McQuade's will be OUT OF BUSINESS within a month! read more
