Stopped by Mystic Market to grab a light bite before exploring the cute town. The market is open and airy, with deli foods as well as grab-and-go meals. I appreciate that they had some healthy, plant-based options. They were out of the vegan meal, but I was able to order a container of the Cowboy Caviar from the deli counter, which hit the spot. Service was good, everyone was friendly. Prices weren't too bad either. They have some tables both inside and out if you want to chow down there. You are at the mercy of the one lone staff member who knows and sees the chaos. Otherwise, Expect to wait amongst a hoard of people without any clear line for sandwiches vs salads and then wait again in line to pay. There is not a clear staff dedicated for sandwiches, salads, or for the register...as a result several parties that walked in after me were served first. Then you have to wait in line again to pay. Why can't management invest in Square Card Reader so that whoever helps you get your food can then just readily check you out? It's 2025 people!! The disorganization of this place makes zero sense and is a serious liability. Decided to stop in while driving through Mystic. Location was much bigger than it looks on the outside. So many options for sandwiches, salads, pastas, baked goods, and specialty drinks. Also had take and bake along with other grocery items. Ordered the California BLT and the Buffalo Chicken salad. Sandwich was amazing and really took us by surprise. Bacon and avocado made this one of the best blts I've ever eaten. Salad had very good flavor and was a good mix of buffalo and blue cheese. Service was good and staff was nice. Prices were very reasonable considering the area. Could've had more seating and outdoor area is stones, so not the easiest to walk through. The ordering system never fails to disappoint. It's confusing and inefficient and once you work your way through it to get things from the different counters you always have to wait in a huge line to pay. The cashier is constantly running off to grab sandwiches and make coffees. Today I got a side of salmon for my salad and it was about one third skin and fat, which were inedible. Mystic market East has been my mainstay since moving here a few months ago. I hate to cook and their prepared meals make it easy for me. Check out their specialty sandwich menu, which is extensive but sometimes you have to wait a bit. It's fairly busy all the time. Mystic Market East once again live up to and exceeded my expectations! I ordered a garden salad with salmon. I had a choice of smoked or baked salmon. I chose the baked. A piece of cold salmon that looked like it weighed half a pound was placed on top a pre-made salad full a very fresh spring greens, tomatoes, and shredded carrots. Everything including the balsamic dressing was delicious! The young man who took and filled my order was knowledgeable, helpful, and very friendly. First, the market, near Masons Island, is clean and the selection, from frozen take-away meals to phenomenal candied pecans is pretty varied. Sandwiches are very good and more than ample for any appetite, the prepared foods are also varied and get excellent reviews from many patrons. HOWEVER, multiple visits cannot seem to establish a standard in expectations. I approach "setbacks" with a stoic approach but I'm now compelled to write how their faire is undermined by the consistent and continued ABYSMAL customer service. I go to this market every Saturday morning for sandwiches, which are great, but getting a staff members attention is much like trying to be unique at the Grove during the Ole Miss vs. Alabama football game, almost impossible. I was there to order food for a group providing Thanksgiving meals to some needy families in the area. I practically walked out with the order in my hand to find another vendor but I waited patiently for almost 20 minutes before I could attract a team members attention. Ah relief to what seemed an interminable wait to pay for an order. I submitted the order form and was informed I had to provide my written credit card on the order form. It was like getting a "call from the IRS," provide your bank info or you risk everything. I revised my approach to the order, changing it from an order for twenty to only four meals. It's hard to give this rating on a review, because the outcome was fantastic, but the process was terrible. I ordered 16 8 inch cakes as centerpieces for my wedding, in 8 different flavors. I picked a decoration that was very simple (just a simply frosted cake with a border), and flavors that were on their menu. Their website quoted about $12 a cake, and we were SO excited to find that price. When we got the final price quote, it came out to $24 a cake. Turns out the prices on the website were 10 years old. We tried to bargain, but they stuck to their guns. We then discussed the cake decorations, and got the second part of the quote....$8 per cake for DECORATIONS. After 5 million back and forths and almost canceling my order, we compromised and ordered our cakes. Cut to day of our wedding - absolutely delicious, moist, beautiful cakes, with the silkiest buttercream. I tried every buttercream, people traded slices for other flavors, it was a hit. Coconut, strawberry lemon, and chocolate peanut butter were the favorites. I encourage Mystic Market to update their website (they just did an overhaul, and the site looks great but the prices are different on different pages). I am writing this review on the soup selection, which I found extremely pleasing on a chilly February afternoon. We stopped in here on our way out of town to grab lunch and much to our delight there was quite a soup selection. I can't even remember the soup I had (which was extremely tasty!) because I was too busy devouring my bf's soup - this delicious rendition of clam chowder. I ended up hounding the kitchen because I couldn't place the herb, but it turns out they put dill in their chowder. I have to say that I was surprised as anyone to find a gourmet market-type place in Mystic, Connecticut of all places, but in such a touristy location, it definitely does pretty good business. I wandered in before visiting Mystic Seaport to find something to eat because I didn't feel like shelling out money for overpriced burgers and fries inside the museum, and I think I made a pretty good choice. The market itself is small, but they carry a lot of international goods as well as pour your own olive oil and vinegar, with a discount if you reuse the bottle the next time you have to refill. They've got a sandwich, salad, and dessert counter, and everything looked delicious. I tried the ham and Brie cheese sandwich, and it was delectable on dark pumpernickel bread with spicy honey mustard. I thought the portion was perfectly sized, and they really didn't skimp on the cheese! I've never had so much good cheese in a sandwich in my life, and I was impressed. I got a cookie with my sandwich and while it wasn't the best cookie I've ever had, it was decent. I would try some of their other ones next time. You will not have any problem trying to eat healthy or if you have a restricted diet due to allergies. I had fresh carved turkey on French bread with cranberry sauce. They weren't skimpy on the meat, cheese, or cranberry sauce. The bread was fresh. I forget how tasty cranberry sauce is on turkey. I added a bag of chips and water and it came to under $12. That's a good deal where I come from. My co-workers had a bean soup and believed it might have been the tastiest soup they've ever had. What a find! While staying at the Taber Inn (across the street) I stopped in to grab some sandwiches before a sail. The market has a gourmet sandwich counter, salads and yummy bakery. I ended up going back for breakfast and lunch the following day. The food is delicious and fresh and they have a great selection of coffees and teas. You can even pick up prepared meals as well. Mystic Market is a prepared foods shop in Mystic, CT. I have frequented the market probably over 20 times in the past 6 months (primarily for convenience) The Market's organization is extremely lacking. Every time you go in at a busy time there is no orderly line, no clear place to order, and the numbers (like at a deli) they provide, they don't ever use. It can take 20 minutes to get a sandwich to go at lunchtime Worst of all about Mystic Market is the management. The management tries to give the impression of caring about its customers, but when it comes down to it, they do not. I have spend hundreds of dollars and brought many guests to the Mystic Market and they have clearly showed me they do not appreciate my business or respect their customers. What follows is a set of random observations that bug me about this place. Fancy eclectic but ultimately limited selection of goods. Breakfast sandwiches are pre-made and kept warm. McMuffins are fresher. There is NOT ENOUGH STAff here and the staff that is here, while friendly enough, seem, under the surface, to be unhappy in their work which affects the (non-existent) vibe of the place. Pay these people more, or share the profits or something. How about teaching the staff how to make latte art for when they are called upon to make and serve lattes? I don't like the advertisements for the owner's other restaurant properties peppered around the place. Lastly- I'm surprised the pastry chef doesn't know that coconut macaroon is spelled differently from French macaron. I used to love this place. I frequent the other location more often because it's closer to work, and I don't know if the same fate has befallen it, but I walked into a really nasty surprise the last time I went to Mystic Market East. The selection of à la carte items has been significantly reduced and there is now a fridge dedicated to prepackaged entrees in little foil containers with plastic lids (Think Joyce's in Westerly or The Bridge Market in Groton). For example, on the day I went, the only way to get mashed potatoes was to buy them as part of a prepackaged Bangers and Mash entree. What if I just want mashed potatoes? (And oh, did i want just mashed potatoes.) I don't know if this is an attempt to quell long lines, quicken service and add convenience for customers, or if it's an attempt to cut down on food waste. I'll kind of feel like a jerk if it's the latter, but it sucks. The selection of sandwiches (I think only one is vegetarian and it's really not that great) and salads are the same and still made to order, there are still a couple of soup options every day, and the desserts are just as seductive as ever. But the thing I loved the most about Mystic Market was being able to piece together a few different sides and make a meal or pick up things for an impromptu picnic, and I no longer feel like it's worth it to try. It especially sucks because Mystic Market has an AWESOME loyalty program (a stamp for every $5 spent up to $15, with 10 stamps equaling freebies [like a sandwich] and multiple cards equaling even better ones [like a $30 gift card for 30 stamps].) The other location is one of the only places I can find local dairy, for example, and they have some fun gourmet food items, so the stamps come quick. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that this change only applies to Mystic Market East and not the smaller Mystic Market West on Noank Rd. I think the technical term for this is denial. read more
