I recently visited this Big Y location. I typically buy similar food items every week. I noticed during the past several weeks the majority of the dairy items and sub sandwiches are nearing expiration or have expired. To compound the issue, prices here in general are more expensive than competing supermarkets. In addition, I noticed a dramatic change in employee morale, especially with Cashiers. During my past 4 visits no Cashier has greeted us. During my past visit, the Cashier tossed our food items down the moving belt. You can tell she was angry. Management, if there is a widespread morale issue or employees aren't being trained on how to appropriately greet customers, especially the elderly or disabled customers, I recommend you address these weaknesses. read more

Every single time I go to Big Y on Mayfield St., Worcester MA, I am racially profiled. If I need 2-3 items, I will go there as it nearby but refuse to do regular shopping there. I mentioned this to a manger before and he said, "Oh, you don't look like suspicious person." Today, what I call a "cart pusher" pushes their cart to one of the isles near the register and then meets me at a different isles where the registers are almost going in front of me and then proceeds to put away 1 package of batteries. So, they want me to believe that he was actually putting away 1 package of batteries. Mind you, I checked and he passed an isle near the registers where he could have placed that 1 package of batteries. I recognized this pattern that they use as it has happened before. They also like to stalk as I have seen the manager before acting as if he is fixing packages of meat when people of color are near the meat fridge. read more

To the General Manager, How far up your rectum is your head? Upon entering the store near the service desk, customer's are assaulted with the smell of death. Something, perhaps a rodent of unusual size, has died within the building and the smell is simply horrid. How can you walk around your store and not notice this? If you can't smell the death, perhaps for your cranial rectum interface blocking out your sense of smell, what are you not hearing in your store? You seem to have missed the high pitched noises coming from the coolers. With all that noise, how can they possibly be working correctly? Has anyone been taking temperatures of the cases? See how I'm forced to second guess everything about your competency? This is people's safety and health on the line. The freezer section shows excessive frosting and icing. How many freeze and thaws has the product seen? Why was the ice cream containers bulging and several of them suffering from damage and tears? Who gives so phew cares that no one has bothered to clean up this horror show? With so much wrong in so many departments, the responsibility must be yours. If your area manager was worth their salt, you'd be on PIP for these failures. Get on the ball and do your job with some passion! read more

Unpleasant experience at this location: Sunday evening, 9/1/19 we decided to stop buy to purchase additional items needed for a bonfire, unaware of the store hours we decided to stop since we were driving past it anyways. We walked up to the doors but they were closed so as we were walking back to the car we hear a lady yelling, confused we kept walking to the car and got inside. She came up closer to the car and was writing down my license plate. It seemed to be the manager on duty, I asked her what was the reason and she said "I'm writing your license plate you came out of the entrance door" what was weird is how could we walk out of a place when in the first place we couldn't get in. Big Y grocery store has many things I cannot find in other stores in Worcester. Example; Cabot plain yogurt. I recently learned that cabot has some things added, although it is still a very god yogurt. But; I have switched to a new yogurt I found at Big Y yesterday when I noticed the full fat cabot was out of stock as they were in process of unpacking it. The new yogurt is; Siggi's whole milk yogurt. GREAT! NO nonfat, No sugar, no gar gum, NO gelatin, NO rBSt, NO other things added! Just real milk, cream. Every single time I go here they have 2 lines open to check out. 3-5pm on a weekday is a busy time! People getting out of work or picking kids up and heading to the store to pick a few things up.... go elsewhere. Unless waiting 10 minutes in line is ok with you. I stopped shopping here a few years ago on a weekly basis because of this and their stocking issues. I drive to Wegmans from Worcester once a week. Worth the drive. Friendly personnel, the store is clean and reasonably well stocked, the prices are competitive with other markets. They play the best in-store music of any supermarket in town! Their selection is odd with many brand names absent. A basic product will vanish from the shelves for weeks (frozen chicken breasts, water cooler bottles, my favorite brand of chips) and never return or mysteriously return weeks later. Produce freshness is lackluster--packaged lettuce is often wilted and slimy, even days before the expiration date. Twice I have purchased frozen meat that had clearly defrosted and then been refrozen, which is absolutely unsanitary and unsafe. Lines at registers are frustratingly long, even during off-peak hours, and there is no self check out option. It's extremely annoying to be kept waiting as customers and staff haggle over their stupid gold coin program and other store offers--I just want to buy my stuff and get home. Sometimes I just set down my purchases and go somewhere else. I have to drive an extra 10 minutes to get to Shaws, but I get a bigger, better selection and a much faster checkout. read more

I shop at this store at least 2-3 times a week as it is very conveniently located close to my house. While my experience with the grocery store in general has been OK (nothing out of the ordinary) my last three experiences with the bakery have been quite unpleasant. One for Halloween when I ordered cupcakes for our kids Halloween party one two weeks ago when I purchased a cake for a party and the most recent one two days ago when I ordered a cake for my daughter's birthday. The staff at the bakery on all occasions has been quite unpleasant, rude, seemed annoyed when approached to ask a question and place the order. For the money the cake costs ($40-$50) I am sure I can go somewhere else where I don't get treated like dirt. read more

This is my everyday grocery store. Great prices and they almost always have some sort of sale on meat, buy one, get 2 free, which is a great deal. This place is very overpriced with some of the worst service I've ever encountered in my life! I stopped working there because Valerie a.k.a. the hiring manager doesn't drug test anybody and i got stuck working with a girl who was always high on the job with needle marks all over her arms in food service also never washed her hands or wore gloves. Yuck that's digusting considering the expensive prices on food. I bought a slice of pizza from there and it must had been sitting there for hours because it was hard as a rock and they refused me a refund. Smh. Overall a terrible experience for me and don't get me started on the service desk. Pam is one of the rudest employees i ever encountered in my life and when going to Rich a.k.a. store manager, he laughed and told me there's nothing he could do about the poor service and if i didn't like it to shop elsewhere. This is my grocery store of choice in Worcester. First of all, they have good prices, and widespread discounts for senior citizens (like me). Second, I have some semi-serious food allergy issues that are difficult to address (namely corn, which if you read food labels like I have to, is in nearly every variety of packaged food today). Yet I am able to find corn-free foods here, including at the deli. Most deli meats either have dextrose or corn syrup, but most of their World Class meats do not. YAY for me! They also carry a salad dressing brand with no corn (finding one of those is another very challenging task). Similarly with coffee creamer. Two of the three brands contain corn syrup, but the third does not. I can even find one brand of ice cream where some of the flavors do not have corn syrup. The back aisle always has some buy-one-get-one deals, with enough variety that I can find some with no corn. They even have bulk doggie biscuits! Their variety is sufficiently wide that I generally do not need to shop elsewhere, though I confess I do travel all the way to Whole Foods in Framingham for a few things that I cannot get anywhere else. read more
