If you like the outdoors and some big rocks and cliffs, come check out this State Park. The park…read moreis one of the cooler State parks in North Carolina that I have had the pleasure of experiencing. I am a mountain type of person and I am really glad that public access has been provided to these cliffs and this Area. Rumbling Bald park host several great hiking trails through massive boulder fields and spectacular hardwood forests. The main draw for the park has to be for Bouldering and Rock Climbing. While hiking or walking through the woods in the winter/spring it is certain you'll see lots of people climbing up and down rocks. Thanks to the park staff for creating a viable parking lot for the park too. When you come here make sure to try and park as closely together as you can. It can get packed on the weekends. Also, don't double park or block anyone, or else you'll get a ticket. I really hope they access can be opened to the other cliff areas around the lake, like Ghost Town and the Darkside, which are currently closed.. 1 suggestion is to avoid this place in the summer, as it turns into a oven with the south-facing rocks, and there is poison ivy all over the place. Go enjoy the outdoor wander around some rocks.

Definitely a gem in the area. I'm grateful I stumbled on it when I took the back way out of my…read moreneighborhood. To have this type of rock climbing facility is incredible and in our small rural area. About 20 minutes from downtown Greenville, it's in the Blue Ridge area of Taylors. Inside is incredible. All different challenges and climbing wall paths. We could easy stay for hours with all ages. Additionally special yoga classes on Monday and Wednesday are up my ally. Whether you want the kids to wear out some energy or just a fun date, I highly recommend it!

It was much scarier than I remember once you get about halfway up your brain tells you to get down and you feel like you could fall, but remember its just a mental game you play with yourself, knowing you're strapped in and safe is half the battle! So exciting once you reach the top and lower back down. My friend who climbs a lot belayed me up a beginner and intermediate course. The neon tape at eye level across the entire facility has a number on it from 5-10. The 5 is easier an the higher you go up in number the more difficult the climb. They have bouldering areas and an automatic belay machine too! There's a mini American Warrior course in the back and they use the grassy hill for slip and slides sometimes! Lots of yummy snacks and drinks available like Clif and Kind bars, fruit, nuts, etc. The place was easy to find with GPS but it will feel like you're driving through a neighborhood. The gravel parking lot was large enough to accomodate about 20 cars.

A heads up from the get-go, this is not a rope-based climbing gym. There is another place in Boone for that, though admittedly their hours are much shorter. I was happy to find this place open on a Saturday evening until 10pm. There's plenty of wall space if there are just a few climbers here but I bet it can easily get crowded. There is lots of other equipment for cross training, but most of it is quite dated. Like something your dad or uncle had in their garage in their teens and 20s. A rusted fan-bike and nylon wrapped, thin foam padded bench. There's a cool "moon board" on the opposite side of the gym at a 40 degree angle. I personally have a hard enough time climbing vertical walls though. There are some rings and balls suspended from the ceiling for you to impress your friends or yourself with some gymnastics level moves. And of course lots of fingerboard options. Normally a Saturday would be packed I bet but I came in during an event elsewhere in town that was specifically popular with the climbing types. So I basically had the gym to myself. At a price of $14 (I brought my own shoes and chalk, not sure if they rent them) it was in line with the gym back home in Charlotte. There's a waiver process that will take you a few minutes to complete. The bathrooms are large and there's a relatively limited amount of cubby space to put your stuff. The hand holds felt tight and I didn't find a single spinner. I was able to clear all of their V0s, most of their V1s and one of their V2s. As you can see I'm barely a bouldering beginner but I will say these seemed to fall in line with my expectation for difficulty. Lastly, the music choice for the evening I was there was not kid friendly and not really to my liking. I imagine it would be different on crowded days or if children were here. All considered though, I would definitely come back.
