Having just moved to Davis, I wanted to use a local spot to get a basic tune up. They had a great price so I went there. Everyone was really personable when I arrived and they told me that I should hear back soon. Within a day or two they sent me a quote, which was a lot higher than the tune up price so I asked what the suggested maintenance work was. They got back to me and explained the extra work they wanted to do and it all sounded reasonable so I agreed. A few days later they called to say the work was done and I picked it up. Sadly, toward the end of my first long ride with it after the tune up, the drive train snapped and the entire rear derailleur popped off. Having just paid for the work and never having had any issues before, I brought the bike to the shop and asked what they could do. I will admit that there was a bit of seemingly suspicious questioning as to whether I had just dropped the bike on it side (thus being my fault) which didn't feel great, but I suppose there are people out there who try to take advantage of people. Insisting that I hadn't so much as bumped it though since having the work done, they agreed to replace the part (which apparently is pricey) and were able to repair it quickly. While clearly it would have been more ideal to only go to the shop once, I really appreciate that they stood by their work and fixed the problem. Thanks again! read more

I like the people at Bike Boom. They're the good guys. When I visited, they were nice and attentive. They didn't give me the hard sell on anything. They complimented my old beater bike rather than sneering at it. (Protip for bike mechanics: sneering at someone's bike is kind of like calling their child ugly or kicking their dog. We love our bikes. Love love love love them. Be nice.) Their explanations were excellent. When I was at the back of a long queue of customers waiting for assistance, they acknowledged me and let me know that I wasn't forgotten and that they would help me soon. I didn't mind waiting for them. I enjoyed hearing them work with the other customers. It was nice to hear these bike enthusiasts sharing their love of biking and their knowledge with novice cyclists. Good bike mechanics have a lot in common with good teachers. Your best teachers had empathy. They were patient. They were kind. They told you the truth without making you feel stupid or bad. Their advice was good (even if the advice was hard to hear or hard to follow). When they screwed up (like all humans do) they apologized and made things right. They listened to you and asked lots of questions, so they could provide explanations that were clear and designed for someone at your level. I love it when bike mechanics have all of these qualities. As far as I can tell, the people at Bike Boom have these qualities, as do the people at Hub Bicycles and Broadway Bike School. So, I have never actually bought a bike or paid for a service here, but have stopped in a couple times (once to look for a bike and once to get some help with fitting). I feel motivated to write a review because both guys that I spoke with when I was there were very friendly and patient with me. When I went there to get some help with some fit adjustments on a bike that I did not purchase there - the guy helped me to readjust the seat and check the rest of the fit. Because he was a bit busy with other customers, he told me to come back so that he could give me a more comprehensive fitting for free! Now I'm inclined to bring my bike there for repairs/tune-ups - which I'm sure is their strategy. It worked! read more

I grew up in the area and have always gone to Wheelworks. I'm not a gear head but I'm more than just a casual rider. I've always taken my bikes to Wheelworks for service, but the last few times I have not even gotten close to what I paid for - I get back a dirty bike than a mechanic could not have spent more than 5 minutes on. And certainly never test rode. Plus they are a factory and you get a take-a-number level of service. Contrast that with my experience at Bike Boom. Came in to their tiny shop and was immediately greeted and complimented on my bike. They did all the service in a few hours AND found some stuff that the other guys had missed for years. A very nice job for a very reasonable price without any typical gear head attitude. I've found my new go to shop. read more

If you can't properly put on a wheel, you have no business working at a bike shop. Came here because my bike got a flat. Someone who seemed new at bike repair (which is fine) replaced the tube and tire. After it was done, I start walking my bike out only to find that the wheel was put on crooked, so it wouldn't turn. A seemingly more experience person straightened it out. A few days later, the wheel seizes up while I'm in the middle of a busy intersection. I have to dismount and carry my bike to safety. Turns out the quick release wasn't tightened enough and the wheel had popped out of place again. In a previous visit, I got a new front break installed an it wasn't put on tight enough so it rattled constantly until I tightened it myself. The employees here are nice and I really want to support them, but I can't trust the work they do any more. read more

I will not bring my bike anywhere else. Period. I brought in a bike that hadn't been serviced in the 13 years I have owned it, and had been left outside to survive on its own in the elements for far too long. I told them that I don't really use it as a mountain bike, and discussed what I could do to make it faster for the commuting that I do. Then we discussed what I needed to do to just make it rideable for now. They weren't pushing me in any direction, but just let me do what I wanted (I decided to make it rideable and come back for more changes if I felt the need in the future). The next day it was done (2-3 days ahead of time), and they invited me to come by and pick it up even though they were closed. Who does that? This crew, that's who. And when I picked it up, it was SO REASONABLE. The other places I considered bringing the bike to would have been 2-3x the cost, easily. So, if you want great service at an affordable cost, from knowledgeable people who are willing to help you out, this is where you want to go. read more

Love the guys here! I originally went when I got a Groupon for a bike tune up but I had a used bike that needed some brake work done to get back on the road. I just wanted to make sure that I spent less than 100 bucks so I checked in and they said they should be able to do it no problem. I brought the ride by and two days later it was up and running again for less than 60 bucks. Their conversations with other customers when I was there were great as well. When they can they'll take the time to let you know what they've fixed but also to give you a heads up on what to look out for. read more

When I look for a good bike mechanic, I look for 2 things: 1. A genuine interest / passion for bikes (geekier the better) 2. No attitude about it. No hipster-ism, holier than thou, can't-ask-stupid-questions-ism After trying numerous bike shops for repairs in Cambridge, Somerville, I think my bike has finally found a home. Like other customers have noted, in my experience having my bike repaired twice -- (once for a hub and brakes and second for a flat tire I didn't feel like repairing) -- the staff at Bike Boom gave ample advice about taking care of my bike and had my interests as a rider in mind, rather than simply making money. After each tune up, I was offered to keep my parts and had a thorough talk about all of the elements of my bike that needed repair as well as a very helpful state of the union on my bike in general. In some cases, the repairs actually fixed problems that were created by tune-ups I received from other bike shops in Boston. The prices were the most reasonable I've seen in Boston, and the friendliness as well as quality of the maintenance were as good as I've seen as well. I'm only reluctant to praise so highly in fear that this little tienda might become too busy for me. read more

The staff is not polite and disrespectful of your time. I went in to pick up a bike that they had emailed me was done and needed to be picked up. When I entered not only did I have to wait for 10 minutes for the person at the front to acknowledge me, but after waiting for that time they then informed me that that it'd be another 20 minutes for them to just go downstairs and give me my bike back. Not a good experience. When I did go back another day to pick up the bike, another person spoke to me and asked about the experience, which was nice. read more

My experience with Bike Boom was extremely unprofessional. I purchased a Living Social voucher for a tune-up, and called to make an appointment. They gave me an appointment 2 weeks away (which was fine, I was in no hurry), and recommended that I get there as early as possible in the day. Dropoff: I arrived about 10 min before 11am (when the shop opens), and the shop was locked and completely dark. Around 11:05, I called the phone number of the shop -- no one answered, and even worse, the voicemail greeting said the mailbox was full and I could not leave a message. I continued waiting outside until 11:08, when the first employee showed up. He did not have a key, so we waited outside another 5-10 min until someone with a key finally showed up to open the store. If I hadn't have already paid for the tune-up, there is no way I would have stayed to give them my business. Pickup: They told me my bike would be ready Fri or Sat, and that they would call when it was ready. By Sunday afternoon I still hadn't heard from them. I called to check on my bike, and after putting me on hold they told me they would have to call me back because they needed to "find" it. I called back again 20 min later and explained that I needed to pick it up by the end of the day because I was going out of town, if they could please try to look for it again now. They called back a few min later and told me it was ready. When I tried to pay with my credit card, they informed me that they didn't have a credit card machine. Fortunately I had enough cash on me (I just needed new brake pads, so it wasn't a large bill), but they never told me this when I dropped off my bike, nor is it anywhere on their website. It may be that the Living Social deal has caused them to sacrifice quality for quantity, but at the moment this seems like a very poorly run business. Very disappointing. read more

This is a great shop! I had an old Huffy 10 speed (inherited) that needed a tune-up. There were no issues with using my Groupon, easy to schedule (they even took my bike a day early to fit MY schedule). One minor issue: after the tune up my front derailer wasn't working properly (I'm pretty certain it wasn't working correctly BEFORE the tune up). I took the bike for a test ride and was having problems, but the store was closed when I returned. To Bike Boom's credit, they replied to my email the same day, told me to come back at my convenience (which I did) and they fixed it IMMEDIATELY. Brian even kept the shop open past closing time to let me take a test spin, insuring that all was in working order. I'd go back again and I recommend them. read more

I've been visiting bike boom since they were in the alley down the street from the current location. I've always had good/fast work done on my single speed. The workers there are always knowledgable and helpful. I've even made friends there and competed in some alley cats with them. I can't give it 5 stars cause I've watched them try to con my friend In to buying unnecessary parts or trash her bike all together. I'm not sure if it's the owner or not but he is generally stuffy and acts superior when explaining bike basics to me. Bike Boom just gave me the best tuneup experience I've ever had! I dropped off two bikes at the shop for complete tuneups about 3 days before my LivingSocial deal was supposed to end. That were no problems, but they were very busy, so they gave me an appointment a few days after my first call. I brought the bikes in and got them back a week or so later. All of that went normally and both employees I dealt with were extremely nice, knowledgeable and professional. This alone wouldn't normally inspire me to write a review, considering how many places I frequent versus how few reviews I've posted. What did inspire me was the amazing job they did with the bikes. I've been a bike enthusiast for a really long time and I've rarely had a good tune up experience. Some places barely even pump the tires when they advertise "full service tuneups." Not Bike Boom! Both of my bikes (one of which was in seriously questionable shape before I brought it in) rode like new when I picked them up. They must have gotten a ton of business from the various tuneup deals, which might lead to a decline in service at other places, but Bike Boom treated my bikes with as much care as if I paid full price. I'd use them again anytime, though I don't anticipate having to do so anytime soon since they did such a great job! read more

With such great reviews, I was hoping that Bike Boom would be just the place for me to find a decent, not-too-expensive commuter bike. Unfortunately, I get flustered easily, and I made it seem like I don't know anything about bikes when I was speaking with the salesman. Immediately, he started trying to sell me bikes that didn't suit my needs for much more than the bikes were worth. He showed me a bike outside and actually ripped the price tag off right in front of me, then offered it at more than triple the price on the tag. During the same visit, I saw him sell a much nicer bike to someone else for significantly less than he was offering me. Bike Boom can probably be a great shop, but go in having a firm idea of what you want and how much you're willing to spend, and make sure that it's obvious that you know what you're doing. If you don't, bring a knowledgeable friend to help handle the transaction. read more

1. They advertised a $70 tune-up at half off for $35. The regular price is actually $50. 2. They then sent a quote for almost $200 for new parts and repairs that I'd said I didn't want. They called me multiple times to say the tune-up wouldn't be worth it unless I did all of it. 3. Finally when I went to pick up the bike they added another $40 claiming they forgot to include some of the charges. It wasn't a good experience. read more

I was referred to here by a friend, for a tune up on my bike. I found 50 to be a fairer price in comparison to the more expensive prices than other bike shops, so I decided to give it a go. I didn't get a tune up on the bike originally, but I had a flat from over the winter, that they'd fixed for me within 2 hours or so. I completely blew out my back gear on my bike switching gears under pressure on a hill. Since the experience had gone so well with them the last time, so I decided to pay them a 2nd visit. There were a slew of different problems with my bike, which they managed to provide me with including their estimated pricing. The bike was completed (in addition with a tune up) in about a week and a half. What I appreciated most from them aside from the quick turnover time was how they kept updated on anything new that cropped up. Great customer service, too! Definitely will return! read more

I needed a reliable, safe bike during my internship in Boston. I meticulously researched the available options, and Bike Boom had the best quality to price ratio. Don't come here if you just want a Walmart bike. However, if you care about your safety and quality of your ride but also want to keep it affordable, this is the place. I got a "hybrid" bike that was a lot more affordable than any other local store, or even Amazon. The owner helped me select the right one for me, and answered all my questions straightforwardly, without it feeling like cheap sales pitch. This is a great bike shop. I bought a new hybrid here last year and unlike other bike shops near by they have a good selection of affordable bikes. I was on a tight budget and did a lot of research, comparing all the shops around. I was especially impressed with the staff, I really hate pushy salesmen and even though the shop was super busy these guys were very helpful and seemed like they really wanted to find the right bike for me. the somerville community trail is right behind and I was able to try out several bike styles since I wasn't sure what I wanted until I found the one I liked the most. I also ended up buying a lock and a helmet which I love. I have been riding this bike for over a year now and recently picked it up from a tune up here. this is my go to bike shop now, I'm so glad they are so close to my place. read more

I used to live around the corner from this shop a few years ago, so I started going for convenience. I wound up buying both of my bikes from them, and although I've moved, I still bring them here whenever they need anything. I can't say enough good things about this shop: - they're thorough - the bike always rides like new when I get it back. - they're no-nonsense - they've always recommended only the stuff they think I need, and nothing extra/fancy. - they're conscientious - once when there was a miscommunication on the new handlebars I asked them to put on a bike, they fixed the problem for no extra charge. - they're cost-conscious - the couple of times they foresaw going over their estimate, they called me to ask about it before going ahead. Bought a nice old Motobecane here round the end of september. It was maybe a little expensive to my taste, but it had history, it was well tuned and the guys have to make a living out of it so why not! They offer a tune up in the 30 days after buying. I came along about 4 months later, and the guy (owner?) was really nice and offered to tune it on the spot. We had a good chat, and bike away a few minutes later with my bike like new! Would recommend if you accept that 20 year old bikes aren't perfect, but they're not made in China and if shops like this exist we can keep stuff living on forever!! read more
