This is an amazing place. It is the cheapest place to fix your bike. They teach you how to fix it. The parts are extremely cheap there. You get your bike fixed way faster than at a shop, because you fix it right away. The mission is really great, because in this time, rents are so expensive. A lot of people can't afford cars, but they can afford a bike and to fix it here. read more

I went in with a new-to-me and shiny-like-new vintage bike looking for a rack and a kickstand. There was nothing that fit my bike that was shiny and newish enough for me today. The folks were amazingly helpful, patient, super nice as I sorted through everything looking for what I couldn't find. I did get a bike bell. :-).   If you want bright and shiny new or like new parts, check here for sure knowing you *might not* find what you're looking for. Bike Farm ROCKS for support and used parts. DIY bike repair. The more I can do repairs on my own, the better off I'll be when out pounding single tracks on a mountain bike trail --- when suddenly the derailleur won't de-rail --- or the drive train won't drive --- and the whatever "chingadera" thing won't ching ching a ling. Out there in the wild you need some maniacal mechanical skills to do repairs or its a long walk back to the trailhead. First time in. I was most welcomed by super friendly, mechanically inclined, volunteers. They showed me the tools and work space layout. I brought my fat tire plus bike to do some work. It went A-OK. I really like the place and opportunity to have a rack and lots of tools. I noticed one volunteer giving plenty advice to a young gal fixing her ride. Cool! So, I signed up with a 6 month membership with intent to go lifetime member. Bike Farm is the place to develop and refine bike repair skills. And the shop mission to educate, develop community and promote sustainable transportation for a better PDX. It is a step to parking more gas guzzlers at the curb and get 'da booty on a bike --- it's a good way to get around! read more

This is such a cool place. My bike got stolen (lock it up everyone!), so I was in the market for just a cheap replacement. I was recommended to the bike farm, and it was not what I expected. I expected, well, a bike shop, but that's not what I got (though they do have a few bikes for sale). What I got when I walked in was a sea of bike parts and a "you build it, you buy it" mentality. I had no idea what I was doing, but, with the help of the friendliest staff in the world, three days later, I had a bike. This place is awesome. read more

Bike Farm is the best. It's a 100% volunteer run nonprofit so everyone is there because they are passionate about Bike Farm. The hours are a little wonky right now because of the recent move and unfortunate fire. Bike Farm is not a bike shop. They will not fix your bike. What they do is teach you how to fix your bike. Staying true to the old adage, give man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for life. It would cost me thousands of dollars to stock all the tools I need to do everything on my bike, so it's great that they have almost everything here. One thing I've learned over the years is that bike maintenance always takes longer than expected. I came in my first time to do some tune up work and was just going to pay the $5/hr rate. After two hours I realized I need to just get a membership. Drop-in rate: $5.00 per hour (no membership required) Month Membership: $20.00 Six month Membership: $35.00 Year Membership: $60.00 At first I got the 6 month membership, but between my three bikes, I opted for the one year when the 6 months were up. There's always at least one head mechanic on staff who really knows his/her stuff and usually another person or two that is very proficient as well. They have a wide selection of very affordable used gear and a smaller selection of new stuff that is really just the essentials like locks and lights. With this new location though, they might be expanding their inventory. It's been years since I've needed to go to a bike shop for anything so Bike Farm has saved me so much money. read more

The best part is that it's REALLY affordable! It's only $5/hr (includes use of all the tools and advice/teaching from their volunteer experts), but those that use it more than a few times a year it's probably a better deal to just get a membership ($20/mo, $35/6mo, $60/yr, $200 for lifetime), plus you can feel good knowing that all the proceeds go right back into continuing the Bike Farm mission. read more

Bike Farm! What isn't there to say. Wonderfully located in Northeast Portland, it's more than a haven for me. It being a place that teaches rather than preaches, has been real nice for me. Being able to learn about my bicycle by doing is something I appreciate very much. The patience of all of the volunteers is amazing. They are all above average people, ready and able to help with whatever I am attempting to tackle on any given day. The prices for what they do sell are really inexpensive, their membership for stand time is a great deal, I don't think it can be beat. If I don't want to be bothered they leave me be, if I need help they are there, it's perfect! The experience for me is a spiritual one, just me, my bike, all the tools I can ever ask for and volunteers, willing to help any way they can. I can't thank the volunteers enough! I absolutely loved this place while I was living in the city. As someone who knew practically nothing about how to maintain her bike (and I had a pretty terrible one besides), I learned how to replace and clean practically everything on there. A complete overhaul for something like $50 all together, and this includes used parts I purchased, replacing the cables, hours of labor that was totally engrossing and fun. The volunteers are really nice, capable folks, and the patrons are also willing to jump in and help if you need anything. This is such an incredible resource that everyone with a bike should take advantage of. Or, stop by and buy one. read more

When times of needs comes at a bad time... you can count on these guys to help keep your head up. My bike has punished me at the Coast. I flipped and hit the road hard because it needs maintenance and I ride it a lot. Opened on SUNDAY was a plus. I approach Dillon and ask how things worked and explained to me what to expect. All DIY But they are there to assist you. You just have to wrench everything. I haven't touched a bike since my teens and still got it. Just had to get familiar with the newer stuff. I came from BMX. :) I changed a broken gear cable, they had none free available so I bought a new one. Only cost me $2 for 2ft worth and it was $5/Hr to use the facility but if you can't pay up you can work an hour volunteer equal to the time you use. Thank You for places like you. Portland is a True bike town. Will be back tomorrow to give more volunteer time cause I enjoyed fixing bikes. :) read more

This is a wonderful resource that everyone should know about. I was referred here by someone working at the Community Cycling Center where I picked up a used bike in need of some TLC. Rather than have CCC fix it up for a couple hundred dollars, I bought the parts I needed for $30 and headed to the Bike Farm to learn how to install them myself. All I knew about bikes was that they had two wheels and occasionally exploded with no provocation; but the folks at the Bike Farm were welcoming and supportive of my willingness to learn. They're really good about showing you what you need to do, but letting you work through the process of actually doing it. Plus they have a ton of recycled parts for cheap - no $40 fenders for me, thanks. Since I had a laundry list of repairs/modifications I opted for the $20 one-month pass. That meant I could get unlimited stand time (which is great for a beginner figuring things out and moving slowly) and I could come back for additional help. In all, going from zero to functioning bike commuter cost me less than $300. So to recap: Support local, grassroots, community-based, learning. Recycle some bike parts. Save money. Have fun. Learn a lot and feel confident that your bike will get you there without exploding. read more

Stopped in yesterday, needed a rear wheel because my spokes kept breaking. They initially didn't have one that fit but we kept looking and dug out one that was close enough. With some help, tools and direction from the crew there I was able to swap out my free wheel and put the used wheel on my bike. It took less than 45 minutes and cost $28. A new wheel installed at a shop starts at around $100 so I was thrilled. Will definitely stop by again read more

I came in with a bike, a new chain and rear cassette and brake pads in a box. 1-2 hours later I rode out with all new things attached, old things properly disposed of and they sold me correct pads to replace the incorrect ones I was sold previously. $10 total amount spent and I was taught how to do it for next time. Thanks Steve, Diana and bike farm, you are legit!! 1 guy was essentially helping 3 or 4 walk in folks at once whilst manning the counter, great job Steve. I got into a little accident after buying a used bike on Craigslist, so I was recommended to stop by the Bike Farm to fix it up. This was the first time I ever tried to mess with my bike on my own, and the volunteers were really patient and eager to help me however they could. I learned a lot by actually doing the work myself. It turned out my bike needed extensive repairs, so I ended up buying a used bike from the farm and relegating my old one to be a project bike. The bike I bought was one that had been donated and the Bike Farm fixed up for sale. It was in perfect condition and they helped me pick one out that suited my needs (a commuter bike bound by a budget). Best part is the purchase came with a free month of Bike Farm membership! Unlimited stand time for a whole month for my project bike! The volunteers here were so great and helpful. For some of the repairs, they did simply explain and let me watch (like bending the steel fork into place) as that was too difficult for someone without experience, but I learned so many other things hands on at the farm. If you like co-ops and your bicycle you should follow this business! They were in the process of moving into a new building but a fire has created quite the set back. The bike farm has taught me so much about my bike and shown me how to maintain it myself! My roomate and I once basically rebuilt both our bikes for under $50 and tuned them! Best bike shop in Portland!!! There isn't even a close 2nd, this place is so unique. Unless you need to have brand new (and much higher priced) parts then the place is for you. The guys that volunteer (there are no paid employees) want to help you to learn how to diagnose and fix problems yourself. I got all these brake and gear shifter cables and shit fixed for $17 dollars and there were many dudes in there that weren't posturing and bloated on macho bike knowledge so I sort of got that feeling you get when you're at the doctor as a preteen and they touch your skin and your spine shivers with appreciation. Best idea ever! I've been a few times now to Bike Farm. I ride an old commuter bike, and rather than going to a shop to get my $50 bike fixed because of my lack of tools, I can head down to Bike Farm and do it myself, plus learn new skills. I've replaced cables, pedals, stems, tires etc, done general maintenance and cleaning, and am working my way up to rebuilding the bottom bracket and truing the wheels. we remember bike farm over near ne alberta, but this location is great too...my partner needed a indoor bike trainer post knee surgery....a few of the volunteer staff at bike farm found one for 10 bucks and customized it for her....they got it right...plus she left a ten dollar donation to them..we also took the free trike for disabled folks, as she can use this rehabbing..we will donate it to legacy randall children's hosp, legacy PT,or community cycling center when finished..you are great, thx so much! read more

WOW! I flew into Portland Friday morning to bike from Portland to San Francisco. I thought I should just change my cassette and chain so I went into bike farm. From the moment I walked in I felt accepted and that Robin and Timothy were open to helping me with any questions. Robin became an INCREDIBLE source of knowledge and support while I got my bike fixed up. Throughout my 5hours at Bike Farm Robin taught me all about my bike and empowered me to do all the repairs that were needed (he even stayed later after closing). I was excited to learn so much and get so much done before this trip! Robin assisted me with changing my bottom bracket, brake cables and tubes (front and back), cleaned my ball bearings on front and back tires, adjunst my stem and probably some other things I can't remember. I am leaving Portland feeling like I made a new friend (Robin) and I feel so empowered to take this bike trip now that I know so much about my bike. My time a Bike Farm was increadible and am so excited to be a member! Thank you all! read more
