UPDATE 6/29 -- Hours after I posted my initial review, one of the owners (Kalan) reached out to me by phone. I told him the whole story, and he agreed to buy back my wheels on the basis that they'd sold me the wrong wheels. He told me the shop could build me a custom set of wheels -- a service I didn't know the Peddler offered -- but I'd already ordered another set of sturdier wheels from a Colorado company. When the wheels finally came in, I took them down to the Peddler. Nate swapped out the wheels the same day, taking extra time to re-true both of them. I've been out on two great rides with the new wheels. While the wheels are still settling in, the bike performed wonderfully. Nate also sold me a couple of wider tires for the new wheels, and the tires work just great. Both Kalan and Nate could not have been nicer or more professional in our conversations and dealings. I'm very hopeful that the experience I had with the other employee was just a one-off, and that the Peddler remains a shop that offers great customer service. ======= After two decades as a loyal customer, I'm sad to say the Bike Peddler no longer stands by what it sells. Last June, I purchased a set of Shimano wheels from the shop. In May, after a total 12 rides, both a spoke and the hub nut on the rear wheel broke during a short Salem Bicycle Club ride. I was astonished, and asked if the wheels were warrantied. The clerk said he'd check. They later informed me that the wheel's warranty didn't apply because it was a "wear-and-tear" break -- even though I'd barely ridden on the wheels. I expressed my dismay, and the clerk shrugged. I told him I'd been loyal to the store for years, and he replied that he couldn't tell me where to take my business. I was truly shocked at his rudeness and lack of professionalism. I've shopped there for years, purchasing items I could have gotten much cheaper elsewhere -- shoes, helmets, bib shorts -- because the Peddler always treated me and my wife like family. I've also recommended the Peddler to many friends, because I could count on the shop to provide them great service and support. It breaks my heart to report that the shop now operates on the motto "Buyer Beware," and seems to have little concern for its customers. read more

My partner and I needed to get her parent's bikes tuned up so we could start using them ourselves. Parking is difficult downtown but they have a couple of dedicated spaces in the lot just south of their location. The woman who helped me was knowledgeable, friendly, and fast. She threw one bike up on a rack and checked it out, cleaned it off a little, and said it was just fine and needed nothing done to it. No charge for that or her time. The other bike needed new tires, new wires/hoses/? (I'm not a bike guy, sorry) and a tune up all around. She offered two choices of tires, one less expensive than the other, and recommended the more inexpensive option for us, due to our needs. I really appreciate that kind of mentality, since she knew I was not a knowledgeable bike person. They took the bike in and had it for about a week to work on. It was finished earlier than their estimate and it functioned beautifully. The price for service seemed very reasonable, the staff were excellent, and there was an amazing good boi/girl doggie who hung around the shop and made sure I had attention paid to my hand by their head. I came into town for the Ironman Salem 70.3 two days before the event. The moment I picked up my bike from the transport company I noticed a reoccurring issue with my brake had resurfaced. I rushed to the nearest bike shop and the folks at Bike Peddler quickly assisted me. They couldn't solve my issue immediately and asked if I could leave it overnight. The next morning I quickly got a call from Nate who gave me a very detailed description of my problem and how he was able to spend some extra time fixing the entire brake system. I had an issue with an e-bike I ordered online, right out of the box. Took it to a shop down the street and they were rude- to the point that I just left, and walked down the street to the Bike Peddler. In the midst of the Covid quarantine I wanted to try something new and thought mountain biking should be the next foray of cycling for me. I looked all around Portland for a specific bike and happened to call Bike Peddler on a whim and got to speak to Robyn. She was amazing! Answered all my dumb questions and got me onto a bike that is not what I would have imagined would work for me, but it did! In the two times I was there and hung out on the curb for curbside service, I watched each employee deal with a variety of customers and questions with patience, which is not always the case in a bike shop as you may know. The Bike Peddler offered services to Tour DaVita riders for our ride in Oregon. They charged $55 for receiving/assembling the bike and $35 for disassembling/boxing it up and shipping it back to me (I included a pre-paid FedEx shipping label.) I FedEx'd my bike to Bike Peddler and they assembled it so it was ready for me at the start of the bike tour. After the tour, they picked up the bike, disassembled it, and shipped it back to me. I was very pleased with the customer service. They were well organized and helpful. They were also the first bike shop who shipped my bike back to me exactly how I'd shipped it to them. The last 2 shops I'd worked with completely disassembled my bike - removing the derailleur and other pieces. It was unnecessary and made it difficult to put my bike together when I got it back. Bought an adult tricycle for my autistic son. They ordered the trike and had it built in just a few days. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They even helped me get it in my car which was a huge pain in the neck and I'm sincerely grateful for the help. My son is extremely happy and rides his new trike everyday. My only complaint is for the trike itself. Sun brand and it didn't come cheap at $450. So, I was surprised the handlebar grips were so cheap they keep slipping off and will have to be replaced. :( read more

Over the last few years, I have gradually become friends with some of these people but to be fair, they were staff first, and I was a customer first, and I was compelled to return. Their staff is knowledgeable, they are helpful without being pushy, and I enjoy stopping by just to look at gear and browse the toys. I feel very good about recommending this bike shop to anyone who has not yet been. After about three years of active riding, I have become a very educated hobbyist. However, I remember clearly being a newbie, and not knowing who to trust. The bike peddler folks were great about earning that trust. Lastly, if you are new to bikes, I would strongly recommend a bike shop and not a big box store. You will pay more, but you will get a bike with longevity, and it will have beet put together by a bike professional. I just recently purchased a hybrid commuter style bike up in Portland, but live here in Salem and had to take it back with me. I noticed a slight kink when switching gears, so I brought it into Bike Peddler. What a good choice! I walked in with my bike and was immediately approached by a nice woman with glasses (forgive me, I can't remember her name) and she instantly took my bike back to the racks and started troubleshooting. My first time into The Bike Peddler. I brought my Bianchi in to have the chain adjusted = $8. Eric had the job almost done before I even finished explaining. He was awesome. Customer service was 5*. I greeted promptly with a smile and all my questioned were answered patiently and thoroughly. They have a really nice large selection of cycling clothes and bike accessories here. I took a peek at some cycling shoes and again Eric answered my questions regarding shoes and peddles. Being a novice cyclist, someone taking the time with patient and thorough answers will win my loyalty. When in Salem and have bike needs I'll definitely be coming back to The Bike Peddler. The staff was very helpful with repairing our Rad bike. They are not a Rad dealer but do work on E-bikes since they sell the Specialize electric bike. There's a reason that they have been in busy since 74. There prices and service are in line with everyone else maybe a tad cheaper. But the service by far is what I like. read more

She pulled out several bikes for my daughter to see and test ride. Eventually she found, "The one!" for her. You can't get this level of customer service and in-depth knowledge at a department store. Such a pleasure to find a business where the sales team doesn't treat folks over 50 like we're non-essential! I'm 66 years old chronologically-45 years old in body and spirit, and instead of having to listen to someone talk louder, slower, and like I'm 10 years old when answering my questions, Tom was like my own son deciding with my partner Julie and I what we did, and might not, need, to renew our love of bike riding. I started it all, people, when I first rode my self-assembled 15-speed from Carson City, up to, and around Lake Tahoe and back in one day in June of 1966. I somehow managed to do this dressed only in Levi cut-offs, black converses (the ONLY kind of tennis shoes in those days dangerously also used for PE, tennis, and everything in-between!) and a stepmother-chosen horrendous horizontally-stripped t-shirt! No spandex and no water bottle anywhere on me or my bike! Doesn't everyone just know that I should be in the G-book of records (won't even try to spell Guin...you know) for living to my current age without helmet, pads, or the latest color coordinated spandex outfit? Anyway, back to the important business of telling you about customer service being alive and well in our own little Salem! Julie and I bought the most awesome bikes and went to lunch while Tom and team of workers with, and without, hair, put together the most amazing combination of beauty and luxury I've ever seen! I came through Salem off the Willamette Scenic Bike Route needing a derailleur adjustment. They took the time to fix it on the spot, and took it out for a test ride when it actually behaved on the bike stand. We picked up some helpful little things while we were there -- great selection.
