My hubby hobbled me together in order for me to barely bike downhill into this excellent shop. They not only had the derailer, hanger, chain, cassette all in stock that I needed but helped me get back to ride for reasonable fair price. We Really appreciated the mechanic shop and nice staff. Also, there's more, if you are in the market for a bike, they also have a well stocked bicycle shop for new acoustic, or e-bikes. This is a new feeling nice, air conditioned store and also had nice cycling apparel. Extra bonus was it was next-door to Duncan market pastry and coffee shop, which was also amazing. I guess if you're gonna break down, this was the place to break down, thanks cycle therapy.

He outfitted us with everything we would need including a banana to snack on! I felt completely safe the entire time even though I'd been nervous going into it and my boyfriend still felt like he'd had an adventure. We're both from the prairies so seeing sea stars, seals, crab, eagles, and even boats was pretty exciting for us. Excellent fun and we plan to do it again!

My mom and I were not great at using the oars but Allen was patient and gave us tips to help us! He was entertaining and taught us how to use kelp as a horn! We saw lots of wildlife including some cute seals that we got really close to! (We're from Napa Valley where bike rentals are everywhere). So we called a local bike shop in Sidney and they referred us to Here By Cycle. They deliver to your door, but we drove over to their location in a residential neighborhood. Their place is 5-6 blocks from the the Lochside bike trail in the town of Sidney. Very convenient. We rented a really nice city bike and also a bike/trailer attachment for my 7 yr old daughter. Lock, helmets, tire repair kit, map, all provided! Top notch equipment and service. Plus really nice people. We rode all over Sidney and North Saanitch area. It is SPECTACULAR area. I recommend HBC. We will rent from them again on our next trip.

I rode down…read moreto French creek and took the passenger ferry to Lasqueti island which was fun in its own right ( about a 20 min ride from parksdale to the French creek marina). The ride around Lasqueti is very pleasant with a couple of beaches to stop at and relatively car free hilly dirt roads . There is a hotel /pub at fakes bay where the ferry lands You need a mountain bike or a hybrid or gravel bike with 32 mm plus tires . Suspension is useful for the sweeping corners that are gravel covered with washboard in some spots. I called Greg at Oceanside outfitters about one minute after closing to try and get a bike for the 9:45 ferry the next day. Greg kindly offered to open the store at 8:30 the next morning and I made the ferry with no problem. He also let me drop the bike off after shop closing time , at his beach rental spot. A really nice guy and I appreciate the above and beyond service and the great bike as well. Stefan

Let me tell you a story about how Seth saved me from a dumb dad move and thereby saved my weekend -…read more Busy weekend out on the island with the fam, lots of hustle and bustle - in the midst of a couple days where it feels like nothing is going quite right on the family front. Looking to turn things around, I decide to install the kid seat on the back of my wife's bike for our 2 y.o. so we can do the ol' family bike ride (that'll fix it!). In a moment of overzealousness though, I give that over-tight, cheap screw in the back of her bike a turn-too-many with the allen wrench: it's stripped, but maybe salvageable. But what do I do? I think, "I can still get it...." So I jump back in there: cheap screw vs. cheap allen wrench, and I send that screw straight to The Land of No Return. It's never coming out now. Enter Seth and Meat Machine. Now, mind you, I had already been down there the day before - or my wife had - for another bike-related issue (I told you - it was that kind of weekend). So, I limp in there, figuratively speaking, and in my shame I present El Strippo to Seth. What does he do? He doesn't make my feel bad. He doesn't hesitate. Immediately, almost un-questioningly, he throws that bad boy up on the lift. He explains that this is not going to be easy and expresses concern that he'll break the head off the screw and then it's done (the seat is never going on in that case). He tries one expensive hex after another. No dice. Last resort: he busts out the blow torch. "Let's put a little heat on it." And he does, and, like magic, that baby starts to move! With the turning of the screw, hearts lift, hope returns - the screw it out. The day - the family bike ride - is saved. No charge. I headed outside and, literally, the clouds cleared (though I'm not sure I credit Seth with that one). But he and Meat Machine did save the day, no doubt. Great little shop. Friendly helpful guys.
