The concept of this restaurant was kind of awesome.... like a buffet, but you pay a small fee for each item (1.50 euro ish). There were some items that were incredible and others that were so so. We tried a ham croquette with a roasted pepper on top.... this was the most delicious thing... I could've eaten twelve of them. The grilled pork on a stick was yummy. The mini paella.... not so good. We had a few more items, but nothing terribly memorable. The bill was inexpensive. If you're passing by, this place is worth a stop. read more

I *hated* Bilbao-Berria. I would give it one star, but I reserve that rating for places that give me food poisoning. After scouring Yelp, I was so excited to try this place. I mean, the concept is great, right?! You walk in, try whatever you want, and they charge you based on the number of toothpicks on your plate. Well, it's a great concept with *horrible* execution. Here's what I hated: *None of the food has labels, so you have no clue what anything is. *The guys working were all complete jackass douches, and they weren't helpful at all. We got there early at 7pm before the rush, but they still acted like they didn't have time for us. *The food was mediocre at best. Everything was cold and bland. And there were quite a few dishes that I absolutely despised! *The desserts were a big let-down too! The only one that was good was the blueberry cheesecakey thing. *The price! I don't mind paying for a great meal, but this was $60 USD crap on a toothpick. Rude and aloof waiter combined with the soggy pintxos is why this place gets a low rating from me. Waiter didn't explain the system, and I got yelled at by someone saying I was going the wrong way down the counter. Only stayed for two pintxos and decided that getting more wasn't even worth it. The bread was so soggy, and soggy bread is just sad. Went down the street to another restaurant (you're in Barcelona, plenty of great places to choose from!) and the service was a million times better. Yes!!!! I really enjoyed this tapas spot. After spending the morning with cranky, tired teenagers who wanted nothing more than to find free wi-fi, arriving to Bilbao-Berria was a godsend. Adults, eating "adult-like"food (read: not cheese pizza) during a busy ouch hour....but still searching for free wi-fi. (Can't win 'em all.) Anyhow, the service was good, our server explained everything in Spanish and English and took us up to the food to tellus what everything was and how all tapas were a flat rate per pincho price. I think it's a good place for a lunch with a glass of wine and some tapas. The tapas are good but always with white bread.. not the best quality. I was there with a group of friends in the evening. The atmosphere in the basement was bad, it felt cold, the service was neither good nor friendly. The worst part of the evening was the paella. It was the worst paella I ever had in my life. Not much of the high quality ingredients, tasteless, way too greasy and there wasn't even a piece of lemon on it. I liked that this place was quick, it is a pinchos buffet, so there is variety and everything is ready. You walk the line of different small bites and pick what you want, they charge you by the toothpick. My favorite was the ham wrapped dates. A much more touristy tapas places, yet with this much variety I'm willing to forgive it. So. Many. Tapas. Restaurants. Barcelona certainly knows how to impress, it would figure that even the chain tapas places are excellent too. Bilbao is the perfect place if you're visiting from out of town or out of country, with an inviting atmosphere, plenty of seating, and tapas places as far as the eye can see. The billing is similar to other tapas places - you're charged around 2 euros per tapas, which is counted by the waitstaff by the amount of toothpicks at your table. The sangria isn't bad either. Why we don't have more of these in the United States I'll never know, as you can eat as much or as little as you want. If you want the maximum variety of tapas possible, or a starter Tapas place after that 11 hour flight from the States, Bilbao Berria will exceed expectations. read more

Great spot for a bite to eat at Plaza Nova near the cathedral. They serve pinxtos style tapas which does reduce the options for a gf person as much of them are on little pieces of bread. Nevertheless there are some breadless options such as the pot of snails, skewers with potato and octopus or quail eggs and pickles. read more

My introduction to pintxos! My first meal in Barcelona and it was amazing. Walking into the restaurant I saw small plates with toothpicks in the food placed all along a glass top. Not sure how to go about ordering - a waitress told me to find a seat anywhere, order a drink and then head up to the "counter" and pick what you want - like cafeteria-style. There were so many hot and cold pintxos, with amazing toppings, and there were dessert pintxos. The waitress totals your order by how many toothpicks are placed in the little silver container at your table. So inexpensive, delicious, and a very filling meal after a long flight! There are no descriptions for the tapas, so you may be unpleasantly surprised when you try them. This is definitely a tourist trap. Prices high, food quality low. Also the sangria wasn't good, which is always a let down. I definitely recommend going somewhere else for a meal. The waiter started took our sticks away while we are still eating, which I think it's pretty rude. It end up he count extra than I expected, but he took away all the sticks already. The best part of this place is that you get to walk up to the tapas bar and pick whatever lights up your eyes (and stomach). The tapas here are €1.65 per plate! Toothpick tapas is a pretty cool idea...you pick out what looks good and pay by the piece using toothpicks to keep track. They offered a good variety of tapas/pintxos but the food quality is not that great. The price is reasonable, they have wine & beer, and its fast which makes it good quick bite stop while roaming the area. Its definitely a touristy place.
