I wanted to love it here. Truly, I was excited because of what appears to be the most vegetarian (lacto ovo) friendly menu in my time here. I wanted this to be a totally 5 star spot. It's really more 3.5 for me and hubby, unfortunately. The concept is great -- little pixtos you can pick up at the bar after you order drinks, all with toothpicks that they count at the end of the meal. The first problem is the lack of signage. That would go a long way toward making this a good experience for all sorts of diners. The signs don't need to be in English; I'm certainly not suggesting that, but there should be something. The second problem is that the vegetarian options are all very bland. I get keeping it simple and letting the veggie flavor shine but salt is essential and it just wasn't there. Service was friendly and efficient and the location is great but if you have allergies or happen to be vegetarian/vegan it's best to order off of the hot tapas menu so you know what's in your food rather than having pixtos. read more

This place is a super traditional tapas bar. You can choose to sit at a table and get served but I was by myself and just wanted something quick so I opted to just stand at the bar and serve myself. They have a plethora of options, all which contain a large toothpick that you save in a little silver container. At the end they use the number of toothpicks to calculate the bill. So if you like toothpicks, it's free! (That's a joke) As for the space and experience...it was rather crowded during lunch time but as to be expected in this busy spot of town. I liked the vibe as it was super laid back and I feel it was an authentic tapas experience. As for the tapas themselves...nothing to write home about but I did find myself there a second time so must've done something right! Lunch time, we walked in here with no idea whether this place was good or just another tourist trap..Food looked good and we were starving so we decided to stay. The food was the standard style we have seen around town, small portions served over a slice of bread . I think they are called pinchos. You pick whatever you like from the bar area and at the end of your meal, they count the number of toothpicks that were holding each portion to figure out what you owe. The food was decent tasting but we have had better quality at other places in town. Slices of bread was too thick for the small portions. Service was a bit slow. I like this place. I think there are more "authentic" places to eat tapas but it's a great location, a beautiful terrace and has a really amazing selection of tapas and pintxos. Everything from tuna-stuffed peppers, to cheese and quince, crab salad, croquettes, iberico ham and more, all atop a little slice of bread. Helpful hint - pick up your items by the bread (not the toothpick). Great selection of wine and beers. You can sit on the terrace overlooking the cathedral, just note there's a 15% surcharge, so eat inside if you're looking to save money. A server will bring you drinks, you then go up to the counter and help yourself to tasty little snacks, put the toothpicks in the silver container on the table and when you're ready, they count the sticks and charge you accordingly. Make sure to go around the side of the counter (towards the restrooms) as there are additional options there. There are no labels or signs on any of the food, so if you have major allergies or preferences, this might not be the place for you. I took a couple of little tapas that looked the same, one was meat and potatoes in a deep fried little ball of yum and the other was salt cod. If you're open to having each item be a little surprise then this is the place for you. Lots of dessert options too. Reasonable priced. read more

Stopped by here around 9 am. Not crowded at all, a very large space. We pointed out which items we wanted to the waitress who then put each on a plate and served it to us with our drinks. The baguettes were the best we have had here. Really loved it. Convenient location near the Barcelona Cathedral for lunch while sight-seeing. Is a pintxo bar (basque-style) although has much more seating than the other pintxo bars we tried, which is good after a morning of walking around town. Very crowded though, so not great for big groups. Decor is more modern than other pintxo bars as well, where weathered wood is the dominant motif. Can't tell you what I had though (the one problem of pintxo bars since you don't have to order, you don't really know exactly what you are eating ... my daughter has a nut allergy so we had to constantly ask if an item had nuts in it which is not something I learned in college Spanish, but I'm quite proficient now. But the dishes were more hit and miss than Irati or Euskal Etxea. Stick with items that are served on bread. And the servers were not very friendly. read more

A nice modern space serving up pintxo which are little snacks with a small skewer through it. Servers will seat you and bring you your drinks but it's all self-serve after that. You go up to the bar and just select away. There's no names or descriptions so go with your best guess. Not the place of you are too picky. They have mostly items on a slice of bread with cheese and sardines or ham. Then there's hot items like chicken wings, stuffed fried ball, mini burger, tempura etc. and there's also desserts. Only tried savoury stuff and they were all decent and average. Nothing amazing but fine for a somewhat inexpensive meal. You place your sticks into a container they give you and the server counts the sticks at the end. Each stick is 1.75€. Cava is 3€ per glass. For two people we had 12 sticks and 2 cavas totalling 27€. Service was fast and efficient. Place was full at dinner but turned over fairly well. There's outdoor seating and it's near the Barcelona Cathedral. read more

Great place for pinxos! Smaller tapas from the Basque region. I went to this place with 2 friends after reading about it on the GuidePal for Barcelona (great app). Immediately when you walk in you're impressed by the different number of pinxos available! They each cost around ~1.70 euros, and they offer dessert options as well! Pretty inexpensive for the quality of the food! I've had subpar pinxos that ran around 2-2.5 euros each. This place gets really crowded (it is touristy, I had english speakers on my left and right side) so try to go during an off hour, (before 2pm!!). It's self serve, each pincho has a kebob stick attached to it (even the hot ones that are on a small plate), you choose what you want onto a plate, and as you eat, a waiter/waitress will come by and take your sticks that you deposit into a jar. Also, I really recommend going with just a couple other people. You're basically hunting down for a spot to sit/stand in. They also have a downstars, which is a sit-down restaurant so I think they probably have a menu there. Don't know if you can bring the pinchos there (prb can..) read more

I have only been to the "pintxos" part of this place (not to be confused with tapas) but that is all I need to have experienced to be happy! It is a bit overwhelming because they have a huge spread and it is self service, but trust me everything is wonderful! So be adventurous and grab something off the bar (anything because you'll be getting up for more) and order a bottle of wine...you'll be here for a while! Wednesdays are 1€ pintxos! Only in the winter though :'( once tourists start popping up in the spring your wallet will soon find out that the deal is no more! Even with the "tourist" surcharge in the spring, you don't want to miss out on this! I heart this place. GREAT little tapas bar right on the edge of the square in front of the Cathedral de Barcelona. Long and narrow, gets VERY crowded inside from 7:30 on. But...they have a GREAT (albeit small) patio with Ferrara heaters. Great place to enjoy a drink, people watch (you'll have ample ammunition there, I assure you), smoke a stogie, and sip on a libation. The tapas are VERY authentic (unlike some of the outrageously touristy places on La Rambla), somewhat reasonably priced, and very very good. This place has a lot going for it. To me this place is for adult afternoon break-time :) My friends and I love to come to this place for the afternoon Sangria and tapas then head to another restaurant for a real dinner. After you sit down and order drink with your server, you can grab a plate and take any tapas you want from the bar. Keep those toothpicks that come with your tapas in the little container on your table and the server will count those when you ask for your bill. Most of them cost €1.95 each. A good place to try "pintxos". When I was there it was 1,70€ for one pintxos, but I think that it depend on the day. Pintxos are pretty big and really good, 4/5 pintxos can be sufficient! The place is really nice even if I have prefer all the Pintxos bar on carrer del Bail with a more local atmosphere (1€ each pintxo). I recommend this place! The manager or guy at the door wearing a slightly different outfit than the waiters was extremely rude. My friend tried to go to the restroom during dinner and was physically blocked by the manager and was told only customers have access to the restroom. She politely said that she was a customer, eating at a table outside and pointed to our table and he proceeded to say "no you are not" and "i know you're not" multiple times rudely. This Barcelona gastro pub was a kinda mind blowing experience. I had no expectations coming in. At this point in my Barcelona trip I'd grown accustomed to good food at reasonable prices, so I wasn't expecting anything different. Bilbao Berria was a really cool buffet/gastro-pub. It's concept is what's so cool about it. So you get in line or go to the food that you want and just plonk it down on your plate. After filling your plate to your heart's (and stomach's) desire, you take a seat and enjoy your fiesta. When you're done eating a waitress will come and count the sticks (most of the food are stuck on skewer/sticks). Apparently, there are different sticks that indicate the different prices. Funny story when my friend and I went. When it was time to pay, our bill came out to be astronomical because there was either a glitch in the system or someone switched our receipt with someone else's. We're so shocked when our receipt read that we'd had eaten 16 small tapas, some other miscellaneous tapas, and lots of beer. Obviously, we didn't eat all that. Each person (or at least this is true for a girl) can eat about 4-6. It was remedied after a little bit of confusion. We had a laugh. I really recommend this place. It was really fun! And it's a stone throw away from a gothic looking cathedral (idk the name). If we were the vacationers who were staying longer, I'm sure we would have gone back for lunch several times over. read more

This was one of the worst dining experiences I had throughout my week stay in Barcelona. The paella was gummy with a hardened film on top like it had been under a heat lamp for a good 15 minutes. The waitress was one of the rudest servers I have ever encountered. I hope that the restaurant management sees this review, we were there on May 19, she had very short dark hair and was working the outdoor patio area. Both my dining companion and I have worked in high end restaurants in fine dining and we understand that a server can have a bad night, but this was beyond rude unprofessionalism. She even slammed the bottle of wine down on our table, as if the fact that we ordered wine annoyed her. Thank goodness you are not expected to tip servers in Europe because we would not have left her a cent. It is baffling how someone like this works with the public. Another thing that I didn't like about this restaurant was that she wanted to charge us an extra 15% for sitting outside. This is a tactic that supposedly many Barcelona restaurants use -- but only on foreign tourists, as I was later informed by a local. Nice. When we argued with her, she said it was the norm for all restaurants to do this, which my friend and I just rolled her eyes at. Avoid this restaurant at all costs. read more

Great place if you're looking for a tapas restaurant in the evening where the menu is much expanded compared to their lunch menu. This tapas restaurant is much better than all the ones you'll find along the Rambla in quality and variety of tapas! Plenty of tapas with various sausages and seafood selections. One of the most interesting was a tapa made with baby eels. I enjoyed a couple made with fresh sardines also. Both were very fresh tasting, taking advantage of the abundance of great local fish markets. I ought to preface this with the fact that my family values quality of food over service. We will eat at good restaurants even if the service is mediocre, but we could NOT stand being treated the way we were being treated. The short story: this place was NOT Spanish and did not represent the culture or the people of Spain and Barcelona. The wait staff was very rude and did not allow us to slowly and casually eat and drink as most Spanish restaurants encourage. Instead, they are all about the bottom line and getting tourists in and out as fast as possible. Racism may have played a role. If I could give a rating of zero I would. The long story: Having been to a similar restaurant to this (toothpick based pinchos) in Seville, and Bilbao itself, when my family and I passed this restaurant early in the day, we were eager to return and sit outside, get some drinks and some pinchos. We made a point to walk back to this specific restaurant from where we were in the city (which was quite far) just to grab a few pinchos and drinks around 4:30pm. The place was relatively empty probably only 3 other tables were occupied out of the several that were both inside and outside of the restaurant. I asked in Spanish (mine was not perfect as I was studying abroad to learn the language) if we could sit outside. The waiter told me, I couldn't sit outside unless I was going to eat a full meal so my family proceeded to choose a place to sit inside at one of the many empty tables they told my family that we could not sit at these tables because we only wanted pinchos and drinks. My parents who are both over 60 were visibly struggling, when they forced us to stand at the bar (which did not have stools) to eat. After a bit of discourse, another server allowed us to sit at a table. He did not offer us any drinks menus nor say any drink options but only spat out, "what are you drinking". Before my father said anything this server just assumed he would be getting a beer because he was a man, and told my father that this was his drink. My mother, sister and I kept being barked at by the server to make a decision on our drink, without ever getting a verbal or written list of drink options. After the whole family said beer, the server looked angry with us as if it was a pain to pour out all 4 beers. Never receiving on warm word or smile, I told the servers in Spanish to pour out the beers because if they didn't want us there, we didn't have to give them our money. I think it is also important to note that my family and I are of Southeast Asian-American descent, and every other person in the restaurant was of European or white descent. I am not saying that these servers were racist but we definitely felt more hostility at this restaurant because of our darker complexions. Also this sort of quick and hostile service is different from anything I have experienced in all of Spain and I have traveled extensively in this nation if you are a tourist looking for an authentic experience this is not it. read more

We decided to try this out as our 1st Tapas experience. It was recommended to us by our b&b host and it has some pretty solid reviews. When we arrived the food looked amazing, we asked for a table for 2 and we were directed downstairs. Downstairs has a small, almost separate restaurant with its own Tapas out on display & being under ground with no windows it felt a bit dark and depressing compared to upstairs lively atmosphere. The Tapas were ok, not really good and not really bad, they has been sitting out and the bread had gone soggy (less people = less food turnaround). we had our meal and finished up. The bill was a lot lower than expected too! When we got back upstairs we noticed the quality in the tapas was ALOT Better looking & there was more variety. My advice: Don't go downstairs, ask to wait until a table is free upstairs - I'm sure this place would have scored 5 stars had we stayed upstairs. read more

There are plates full of small sandwiches and appetizer like foods and you fill up your plate cafeteria style. When you are ready to pay, they simply add up the toothpicks. It is SUCH a fun way to eat and you can try so many different things, eat only a small meal, or just get to see what there is to offer before you eat. It's more of a pintxos (peen-chose) bar rather than a traditional Spanish tapas bar. From my understanding, however, Basque cuisine has become quite the trend in Barcelona. The way it's set up is similar to a buffet. Pick up a plate and start putting items on your plate which interest you. The only difference however is that every item is impaled by a large toothpick. These sticks are to be placed in the cylindrical metal receptacle in the center of your table to later be tabulated by your server. Each stick is around 1€60, so it's also kind of like dim sum wherein your bill can add up very quickly from all the items you pick up. I feel they put some of the less desirable items near the front of the line and the better ones at the end of the line, so my suggestion would be to take a quick walk-through before putting anything on your plate. read more

We were walking around the Gothic Quarter, looking for a highly rated restaurant where we could order some paella. When we walked in, they only had tapas (we would have considered getting a few but they were all unmarked), and told us we would have to come back later to order paella. We came back about an hour later, sat down in the main room, and again tried to order paella. The staff members grimaced and said we'd have to wait until the main restaurant downstairs was ready for us. We agreed and my husband ordered a beer for the wait. I asked to order a mojito, off of their drink menu. When I asked for the drink the server simply and sternly replied ,"no." I was befuddled and decided to not order anything. After about 5 awkward minutes we were escorted downstairs and were greeted by a more polite server who happily took our paella order- lobster for 2. It took a very long time to come out, which we were okay with since our hope was that they were making the dish to order and from scratch. Our hopes were quickly dashed as we were served a plate of mostly salty unflavorful rice and peppers with almost no lobster. For a relatively expensive dish of about 40 euro I'd have expected a bit more in terms of protein and execution. read more

Bilbao Berria was my first introduction to pintxos, and what an introduction it was! Marvelous bite sized offerings of jamon, tortillas, anchovies, and other Spanish delights all served on tiny little skewers. If I remember correctly each pintxo was priced at a little less than 2 euros, and the beer and tinto verano were both extremely affordable. Great seating in the cathedral plaza, or inside. Bilbao Berria is spacious and well lit. Pleasant, inviting, and delicious. I would highly recommend visiting on an early Sunday afternoon so that you can observe the greek dances that take place in the plaza directly in front of the outdoor seating. read more

This is one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Here's the concept: Every food item is made tapas-style, so it's a single-serving. Each little dish has a wooden dowel sticking out of it. Go around, pick however many little dishes you want and then place the stick in the cup in the center of your table. At the end of the meal, the waiter calculates how many sticks you've amassed throughout the meal and then charges you for what you've consumed. Oh my, the food was delicious! Every dish was well made and offered a taste of many classic Spanish dishes so you could try "real" food (this is why we travel, right?). Since there was so much going on, you could test your comfort level without going too crazy. You can stick to the familiar or try something totally insane (octopus, anyone?) and if you really don't like it, share it with someone at your table or go grab something else. Beer was cheap but the Pepsi expensive, so think about that when you're ordering. I will definitely come back here the next time I'm in Barcelona. You should go, too. read more
