First of all, i agree with everyone that this place is interesting, And yes the old lady at the front is VERY RUDE. i went in today and i was playing guitars and was interested in one. (the only electric in tune might i add) I was gonna plug it in and play it, so i asked if i could use a pick to play on it. and the guy said no, that it would scratch the guitar... First of all i understand, but how the crap am i supposed to know what a solo on that guitar is gonna sound like using my floppy fingers???? When was the last time you saw a rock star shredding a guitar with his pointer finger???. Overall i am not very impressed, they really need to hire some different people and step up there game if they want to stay in business. read more

I went in like a year ago to buy a guitar capo for a friend. I thought it would be a simple purchase, but the guy working was super friendly and enthusiastic in helping me find an awesome gift for my friend. I ended up getting this shark capo, partly because I thought it was funny. My friend absolutely loved it! I don't understand how this place is still in business. The store is cluttered and dirty, the pianos are all out of tune, and the owners of the store seem to know nothing about their own merchandise. My friends and I went there today. Long story short, the customer service is a joke. The old folks who own the place get upset if you try out the equipment, especially if it's loud. They don't seem happy to see people in their store. I felt contempt from the old lady as soon as I walked in. What's more, we were there on Martin Luther King Day. The old lady is a complete racist. She was spouting off to us and other customers how terrible Martin Luther was and how if he made it to heaven then we're all going to be okay. Super disturbing. I am shocked and amazed that this business is still open. I have had several negative experiences, but since I just tried them one last time today, I'll just tell you what to expect if you decide to enter the nightmare that is Bill Harris Music. The place is in absolute shambles. I would be terrified to buy anything because all their products are treated horribly. It's all buried under mounds of paper and garbage. The place looks like an episode from Hoarders or something. Disastrous. The service is appalling. Bill himself can be friendly, but doesn't know anything. He has employed a younger guy who is a bit more helpful, but the dude is totally paralyzed by the logistical nightmare that the Harris's have created. They didn't know if they had what I was looking for, and ended up just scrounging through boxes of actual junk to find one. Finally I just gave up and left and went to Summerhays in Orem where they gave me exactly what I needed with a smile. The prices seem reasonable, but I really have no idea what condition anything is in because the place is such a train wreck. STAY AWAY. read more

It might be a guy or non-white thing but I've never had a problem with the old peeps. I've been here on a few occasions and because I hate mall music stores this is my go to place. I've gone here a few times and since there are only 1 star ratings I'll share each of my experiences. 1. Came to buy clarinet reeds. Yes it's like you're in an episode of hoarders, particularly if you go in via the back but they had the reeds I was looking for. Service was a bit slow but whatever, they're older. 2. Came to check out electric guitars as a surprise for my daughters birthday. Selection was okay, great for all price ranges although some of the more pricey ones may be marked up a bit. Older couple wasn't there so a younger guy (don't think it was their son) let me mess around a bit and take pictures. 3. Bought more clarinet reeds. Older lady was reading paper with hair in foam rollers. Had to do a double take as I wasn't sure if really I saw what I saw. 3. Came back with my daughter to have her pick one out as a surprise. The guy who I think was the son hooked her up with a place to try them out. He didn't bug us as she played Violent Femmes or whatever Nirvana song. The couple was up by the front a safe distance from the guitars. She picked one out she liked and the son gave us a really good deal on the guitar, a new case, and a set of mandolin strings. 4. Bought two sets of guitar strings and a guitar tool. Helped by the oldest guy, the telephone was out so they couldn't scan my card but instead wrote down my card number exp date and whatever. I'm still cringing at that, hoping I don't end up getting a 247.70 charge instead of 24.70. I think the bottom line is, it's a hit and miss experience but they do seem the type of place if you know what you're doing, you could talk them down on price for an instrument and stay away from mornings/early afternoon if you don't want to deal with the older couple. I've had decent experiences so far so I'll rate them 4 stars- so long as I don't end up paying $200.00. read more

Okay, I get it, most of what has been written is true. However, if you look past the quirky personalities, and the somewhat "2nd hand store" feel of the place, you can often get a good deal on something you like without having to drive 30 miles. Also, the younger guy does good repairs on electric guitars and such for very reasonable prices. As mentioned in one review, some things are over-priced, so shop carefully and ask if that is the best they can do. As for the guy who left his credit card number, it is perfectly safe. They are honest people and sincere, just not baked in the culture with which most of us are familiar. I enjoy meeting interesting people, including those who are very different from me. If you want a cheerful, upbeat, sales rep, go to Guitar Center. :) read more

Wow this place is truly awful. They are selling damaged guitars for full price. When I pointed out that one of the Guilds had a 6 inch crack on the front of it, they tried to convince me that it didn't really matter and that I should still pay full price. They are scoundrels. Don't get played by these guys. Go to Teton guitars or guitar center. read more

This place is terrible. Sketchy as all-get-out... I'm shocked they're still in business. The old people follow you around the store as if you're going to steal something. The old woman is always making racist remarks about the Mexicans in Southern Provo. I usually dealt with their son when I'd shop there. He's a bit off, but he'll give you a good deal on gear as long as he has it. He gave me the run around on an item for about three months after he promised that he could get it to me at a much cheaper price than anyone else. I had issues with a lot of the gear I bought there, too. The amp had scratchy pots (brand new amp), I bought a used guitar and the volume knob was worn out. He "fixed it" but wired it backwards so to turn it up, you have to turn it the opposite way you normally turn a knob on a guitar. Another guitar had a bad input jack that was shorting out really bad... He did exchange that guitar for another one, no questions asked, which was decent. I just can't get over the racist, ornery old people... It feels like you're snooping around their living room, not shopping a music store. Super uncomfortable. read more

I'd like to underscore Paul's review and leave one of my own. Me and my husband have been to this store several times and it's an awesome place. It's owned by a family/older couple that are real honest, knowledgeable people. Because it's not some big box store, you can find what you need, negotiate a good price, and they'll work with you to make sure you leave the store happy. So far we've had nothing but positive experiences and great deals. Just today we had a guitar restrung for cheaper and quicker than we could get anywhere else. If you want to go to some uppity music store where you feel bad for talking above a whisper, or to a chain store that will consistently try to make a profit off of you, by all means go. If you want to get a good deal, with good people who enjoy music, and maybe find some unique pieces, then Bill Harris is the place to go. read more

Horrible customer service. Horrible. I feel so wrong giving this place even one star. If you want the worst customer service EVER, or to be belittled, profiled, swindled, offended or ripped off this is definitely the place for you. If you are looking for a good music store, go somewhere else. Things started out well, I got a good deal on a piano rental, but eventually things turned sour. The store lost track of my payments several times (that's what happens when you keep receipts in the form of notes on scratch pieces of paper), demeaned me over the phone every time I called to make a payment. All I can say is that I knew what I was getting into ahead of time, and thought I could avoid any problems-I was wrong...Trust me, it is just not worth it. read more

Bill Harris Music is known to be the black sheep of Utah Valley music stores. Bill Harris, his wife, and his son are the ones who run the store. They're often busy doing a thousand other things than helping their customers. Only the son knows anything about guitars and gear, but his knowledge is outdated. They sell used instruments at retail prices. The place feels like someones crowded storage room, run by people that seem to be socially stunted. Had a conversation with the son, who said that he's basically the one who runs everything and that Bill doesn't know what he's selling or doing in the music store business. Very telling. read more

This place WOULD be such a cute, thrift shop feel-y music store, but the customer service ruined it for me. The young guy was pretty quiet but seemed nice enough. The old woman in the back was simply awful. She didn't seem to want us looking through the music books, and was constantly telling us that we were ruining her "organization" of the books. When I began to quietly play one of the pianos, I could feel her disapproval from across the room, and immediately stopped playing out of discomfort. We decided to buy a piano book, and when we tried to get the exact change for the purchase to make it easier for her, she claimed that we thought she was "stupid" and got angry. I left that store as soon as possible. If you're looking to find terrible customer service, grumpy and rude workers, disorganization, and discomfort, this is the place to go! ;) read more

The bad reviews are right on: the older couple are rude, completely unhelpful, condecending and simply awful at customer service. The place looks like an episode of Hoarders. It's disorganized, full of junk and dirty. We purchased parts there that they then refused to help with when problems cropped up. AWFUL. DO NOT GO HERE. Great selection of sheet music and a surprisingly decent variety in some types of items. The store otherwise is limited and has a couple clutter spots. It's seen some neglect, but only as much as my great grandmothers home did. We aren't talking about a young couple and a shiny new store. So I won't judge them as if that's what it was. They didn't share any personal views with me, but I wouldn't judge them even if they did. The younger man is the grandson and they were both kind. No family is perfect and the store isn't perfect. It's aged for sure. But the sheet music is actually very up to date and they seem like a decent family. What else would I expect in Provo? I'll return for the sheet music. read more

This place is awesome! I had a great experience! Kevin, the son, went above and beyond in helping me. I brought in my old guild to buy some strings and he went ahead and changed them all for me. He also cleaned it up and buffed it with a restorative application. He wasn't interested in convincing me to get things I didn't need - he honestly had my best interest in mind. He was fun to talk to and was incredibly knowledgeable. I learned things from him that would've been hard to learn anywhere else. I highly recommend stopping by and checking it out. read more
