A hailstorm totaled my asphalt shingle roof earlier this year. Afterwards, I decided to get bids on metal roofs. Aside from being hail resistant, other reasons to go metal: insurance companies offer a significant premium discount for having a metal roof; metal reflects some of the sun's energy, which helps keep the house cooler; and it's made of eco-friendly and recyclable materials. I first noticed Bill Sprauer's name while reading the reviews for Ace Roofing Company here on Yelp. Various reviewers on Ace's Yelp page seemed to be praising Bill and his work by name. Someone even posted a photo of his business card. But that is common for reviews, so I didn't think much of it. But then, when I was soliciting additional bids, I noticed one of the companies that contacted me was named Bill Sprauer Roofing. This got my attention. I put two and two together and realized that this guy developed a good reputation with Ace but then left to start his own company. I decided to invite Bill over to give me an estimate. He arrived on time, examined my roof, took some measurements, and wrote me a competitive bid on the spot. Bill answered all my questions and struck me as an honest, no nonsense guy. He made me feel comfortable and at ease about the job, which I needed given that I am an anxious, type-A "details" kind of person with high standards. He invited me to hit him with questions any time and promised that he'd keep me updated every step of the way. Bill also explained how he had three separate teams of roofers--one for shingle, one for ceramic tile, and one for metal--because each requires a somewhat different skill set. His lead metal roofer, Alberto, is someone he worked side-by-side with earlier in his career, and he was, according to Bill, methodical and detail-oriented--among the best of the best. Materials prices have been going up drastically lately, like everything else, and a month+ of rain delayed the start of the work, but Bill cheerfully honored the quoted price. I accepted Bill's bid for 24 gauge McElroy Galvalume "Surelock" striated standing seam metal panels with 1.5" tall seams. This quote included just about everything--shingle removal, new vent fixtures as needed, new decking for any rotted spots, new underlayment with ice-and-water shield at critical junctures, and of course all the metal materials and labor. The work came with a 5-year unconditional workmanship warranty, and the manufacturer warrants the Galvalume metal for 40 years. On Day 1, the shingles were torn off and hauled away, and the underlayment was put down. Some "turtle" or box vents above my garage were sealed up in favor of creating a new vent line along the ridge of the garage. Day 2: More underlayment goes down, and my siding was trimmed to make room for new metal flashing where the roof meets exterior walls. Day 3: Metal drip edge is installed, which sealed the edges of the roof and provided a surface that the panels could grip. The metal panels were delivered and roll-formed late in the day and were staged in my backyard. Day 4: The installers started laying down metal panels and got about 30-40% of my roof covered. My roof is not simple, and they slowed down around penetrations to make sure they got good fits. Day 5 was a Sunday, which the crew took off for some well-deserved rest. (These guys work out in the hot sun for 9+ hours per day!) Day 6: The crew put down another 40-50% coverage in panels, and installed new dryer exhaust and bathroom vents (which matched the Galvalume metal). They also painted my existing fixed vent stacks to match the metal. On Day 7, they finished laying the panels, installed new boots around the vents, sealed them down, and installed the final flashing covers. Later that day, the head supervisor, Estevan, visited the job site and I was able to ask him a few questions about how some of the intricacies of the roof, such as change in slope, were handled. He also explained the (very limited) maintenance I would need to do to the roof every few years, which involved checking the seal/caulking around the vent boots. It was clear that these guys are professionals and have done jobs like this many times before. All of the workers were respectful and polite, and I would have talked with Alberto and Estevan for much longer if I could stand the intense sun exposure (which I can't). There was a minor hiccup along the way, but when I brought it to Bill's attention, he didn't equivocate: He said he would do what it took to make things right, and he did. Considering the quality of the materials and work, the attention to detail that Bill's roofers abide by, the competitive price, long warranty, and Bill's honest, humble, down-to-earth attitude, I'd happily hire Bill again, and I've already recommended Bill Sprauer Roofing to my neighbors (whose houses were also damaged by the hailstorm). read more

Further, unlike the others, they were not pushy and trying to upsell us at every turn. They completed the job quickly despite the the supply chain issues with building materials. The overall experience with Sprauer Roofing has been a nightmare, and I would recommend that you stay away from this company like the plague. From the unpleasant and unprofessional project managers who ghost you, to the owner himself, who will ignore you after he gets your money, you shouldn't trust them. The whole story: I first engaged them to fix four leaks in my metal roof back in June. Two weeks (the first time it rained after the work) after supposedly fixing the leaks, 3 out of the 4 places were leaking again. I contacted Chris, the project manager who had done the work, about the issue (which he told me to do), and he didn't respond to my messages. I had to contact the main offices to get any type of response, after which Troy, another project manager, came out and did some more work. This was mid-summer, so we didn't see any rain for at least another month or two, but literally the first time it rained again, two of the spots were still leaking. At this point I should have cut my losses and went with another company, since why would I trust Sprauer Roofing to get it right after they failed 2 separate times. Against my better judgment, I called Bill, the Owner, and he said he was taking care of it personally. He sent Chris, the original project manager, out to take a look, and Chris told me he no longer worked for Sprauer Roofing, and asked for more money to fix the same leaks. I of course called Bill and told him about the situation, and he assured me he'd be taking care of it. It's been 2.5 weeks since then, and I haven't heard a word, despite leaving multiple messages. This company lacks any shred of professionalism or accountability, and cannot be trusted to fix an umbrella, let alone your roof. As a part of real estate transaction we needed a professional opinion on recently replaced roof. Bill understood the urgency and made himself available for the free no-obligation inspection. Bill was very professional. The roof was not replaced by him but his opinion was extremely professional and really helped us navigate through the deal. A tree landed against our roof overnight during the recent ice storm. Considering how widespread the damage across town is, I expected to have a difficult time trying to get someone out to assess. Bill came out himself to provide the estimate and walked me through how things would go. He even help me pick out the best color of shingles for the roof. The reason why I love working with Brandon is because when he did his initial inspection, he noticed that there was hail damage on the roof. He did his due diligence by researching the hail storm database and noticed that there was a hail storm in my area within the past year. I was able to call my insurance company and got my insurance to cover most of the expense. My tenants living there at the time never told me about the hail storm. Brandon worked with my insurance adjuster and the job done. On the day of installation, there was suppose to be a rain storm. Brandon rescheduled the installation date for a later date. They got the job done in a day and a half. Even though the workers left some debris in the backyard but Brandon quickly took careful of it. Nothing ever goes right the first time. You always want someone who is willing to come back and fix the issue when there is one. I'm super happy to have found this company and to have Brandon to work with. I interviewed 4 roofing companies with amazing reviews and ultimately chose Bill Sprauer Roofing to complete my work. My roof suffered hail damage from the 2020 hail. I chose this company because of the amazing communication. I worked with Troy; he wanted to meet with me in person at the house to discuss what needed to be done and he had examples with him to show me as well as pointed out my neighbors' roofs to demonstrate what needed or won't be done. Then he helped me a lot to understand what my insurance company was reimbursing me for. While the other insurance companies were nice and had comparable prices, Troy definitely took the extra time to make sure I understood what needed to happen.
