From visiting older national cemeteries predating the genesis of the national veterans cemetery, I had a great opportunity to hear about the process and see how they've evolved. It's so new, that in addition to recent burials for which there's still no headstone, there's a spot as you come in, where the crypts are still visible, aligned, and soon will be covered with grass. It's a view not often available with respect to how these cemeteries create the precise placement of the sites and headstones. It's also somewhat sobering. I had the chance to speak with the Post Commander from the American Legion and his wife, both of whom have been involved from the beginning in getting state and federal approval for Montana to have a National Cemetery of its own. They explained the process, the plans for expanding the cemetery, increasing the columbarium niches, how those veterans who've left the state have opted to come back to be buried here and told me the stories of a couple of veteran "notables". It was an opportunity for a look-behind the scenes at learning what is involved with these places that honor our veterans. The land was donated to the state. Yellowstone National Cemetery is the first of many more new National Cemeteries authorized by Congress. This location seems empty compared with others, but it's only an illusion, I think. It's a nice location.
