Well, what's not to like about Bill's? It is described as a produce store, but it is also a cafe, and it is for the renowned breakfast menu that I visited. I'm not veggies, but I had to go for the vegetarian breakfast - and wasn't disappointed. Unlike some veggie dishes, this wasn't a pastiche of a meat eater's meal with fake sausages, but a celebration of veggie food, with juicy tomatoes and some lovely houmous and guacamole. Not your normal brekkie fare, but very good. Everything about the place shows care, thoughtfulness and a pride in what they do. And they give you hot water bottles in winter to make up for the lack of heating. read more

I don't know that I have enough nice words to say about the awesome dinner I just had at Bills. From the warm welcome when I walked in to the frankly amazing chicken burger and fries, I am truly impressed and wish they'd hurry up and open a Bills in Scotland. So two courses plus a beer set me back a very decent £22.50 which includes the extra avocado I had on the burger. Not the cheapest, sure, but an amount I am very very happy to pay if that's the experience every time. The chicken was tender and delicious, the sweet potato fries were crispy and beautifully seasoned, the chipotle mayo was smooth and spicy at the same time. And then I had pudding... I opted for the gooseberry and almond crumble and to be honest I had a wee moment with myself as I was eating because it was very nearly as good as the gooseberry crumble my grandma used to make with the berries from her garden. That's a lot of feelings for one pudding but the crumble stood up to it well! And the staff couldn't do enough for me. Super polite, seemed genuinely happy to be waiting on me and all round just a lovely atmosphere. Families were there when I sat down and there were a few couples but I also didn't feel out of place as a lone diner. So, yeah. If you're in Brighton go to Bill's. It's really really good. Eta: I have been informed by a pal there is in fact a Bill's in Glasgow. Be still my rumbling tummy! I've walked by Bill's a few times and always seen the huge crowds on the weekends for brunch and dinner so I kept it in mind as a place to try at some point for brunch. I got around to coming with a friend for brunch on a weekday and had a really good meal. The coffee was great, the eggs benedict was amazing. The hollandaise was nice and creamy, slightly tangy and I liked the seed mixture scattered across the top. The setting is kind of funky, they sell a variety of goods for cooking/ kitchen use as well. The staff was friendly and helpful as well. If you're looking for a nice place for breakfast/ lunch definitely try Bill's, and aim for a weekday if you've got the time, otherwise expect a bit of a wait. read more

I want to eat here every time I'm in Brighton. Fortunately, I have to go to work and can't indulge in lengthy brunches fueled by mimosas (I can't bring myself to call it "Buck's Fizz" as it's just... inelegant) and coffees and teas. Brunch. Done right. I always want to try the big lunchy looking things, but really, you can't ever go wrong with breakfast. Cheap(ish-- for what you get by far). Excellent pastry. Fabulous coffees. Food was yummy and I love that the breakfast menu is available until 4pm. However there was a delay getting seated. Not because there weren't plenty of tables available but because the host was slow. Also the kitchen doesn't know how to do poached eggs! Which aren't that hard to do! They were cooked completely through, no runny egg yolk at all. read more

I agree with others that the food here is very good, and a bit different, but whenever I've visited I've had to queue for what felt like a long time (15 - 20 mins) and found the seating arrangements claustrophobic. The service was good once seated, but for me it's too crowded and cramped, ultimately spoiling the experience. read more

Great service and freshly prepared food at good prices. It's the ideal hangover cure, and you wont find a better place to spend a lazy afternoon. The decor is spot on with it's produce-lined walls, industrial features and rustic wood textures, and the atmosphere is lovely and relaxed. It does get busy, especially at weekends, but the staff helpfully let you know how long you're likely to be waiting, but the surroundings are so nice that you really wont mind the wait. Bills is one of my favourite breakfast places in Brighton, and easily one of the most popular places to sit down for a meal in our fair town. So popular, in fact, that it is often very hard to get a table. If I've ever made that complaint about somewhere in Brighton before, it's much worse here: I habitually have to wait 10-15 mins to sit down here. However, it is hugely worth the wait: the food is some of the best you can get in Brighton, and it's often vegetarian, always organic and to the highest possible quality. If you can get a table, you'll never want to leave! Apart from the exceptional food, as well as the exceptionally long wait, Bills is also a great place to go to pick up cooking ingredients: as delis go, they have a pretty impressive selection, as well as lots of local fruit and veg. The prices are a bit much, but the value for money is just right: the quality is well worth the extra few pounds. As well as that, the atmosphere within is simply lovely, combining the hustle and bustle of a cafeteria/farmer's market with wooden tables and chairs and polite service. This is my favourite place to eat in Brighton. The food selection is always fresh, beautiful and keenly priced. I love the ambience and the ethos. Any fruit and veg that they do not sell at the front of the store, gets cooked, so the menu is constantly changing. Bill's is already an institution, a very distinctive style, rustic in the city., part Deli and Vegetable shop, part cafe/restaurant. In an old garage premises near the Pavilion(rear of) , great breakfast , coffee, lunch etc. It opens at 10am on a Sunday, don't wait until 10.15 for a table or you'll be queuing! There's no booking. Staff always friendly, laid back, reasonably efficient just so cool and they know it. There's a 'mother' restaurant in Lewes, which is slightly smarter, but same format and just as busy. Are now open in the evenings until 10pm, not Sundays. Bookings taken for evenings. read more

Bill's is probably one of the most unique places to eat in Brighton. When I first moved here five years ago, it was more of a food store/café with a couple of tills plonked in the middle of a green grocers that took up the best part of the shop front. Now, the tills have been cleared to make way for more tables and it's now much more of a restaurant that sells some food and drink. Ok, maybe 'some' is an understatement the walls are completely shelved and stacked floor to ceiling with all manner of yummy goodies from organic juices and wines to fresh vegetables and locally produced pickles. The place itself is absolutely gorgeous. With it's dark wood, folding front doors and mezzanine balcony it feels like a converted barn right in the centre of town. As you step into Bill's from the buzz of North Laine it's like stepping from city into countryside. I had a salmon fillet with parma ham accompanied by roasted potato wedges and fresh peas crushed with feta cheese. I couldn't fault the food in the slightest the flavours were absolutely divine (especially the feta peas) and the service was excellent. My one and only complaint was that for around £13, the portion could have been a bit bigger (but that may just be me being greedy!) A lovely surprise at the end of the meal was that when they bought our receipt over it came with a voucher for a free bottle of wine if we came back bought two Sunday roasts. Alas, we didn't manage to get back there within the time limit to claim our freebie but the sentiment was much appreciated! read more

Currently offer a TAKEOUT of Porridge and a coffee for £1.95 though if you ask nicely they'll also do a bacon or sausage or egg in ciabatta (instead of the porridge) for the same price! Just had a totally crap experience at Bill's which is really a bit sad considering how I used to feel about the place (see previous review below the dotted line). Ordered the Bill's Breakfast and it turned up on burnt toast, minus the sausage - kinda important part of the breakfast, and without any garnish or nice touches. The fried eggs were also a bit overcooked. I sent it back and it came back with garnish, sausage, and fresh toast, but cold mushrooms. I'm really just a bit sad as Bill's at its peak was great for Brighton but it feels like the greatness has really gone. BOOOOoo. EDIT----------- Fantastic for breakfast. I aim to get there for 8 am: no queues, no messing, and plenty of room to pick a spot. (By the way, at 8.30 or even 9 am you'll still be fine for a table). The Eggs Benedict is the stuff of legend. The full breakfast will not let you down. The veggie breakfast will put a party in your mouth before the day has started. Quality OJ, reasonable coffees. Don't ponce about with the overpriced grocery goods or cram yourself in when the place is rammed. Don't fool for that nonsense that other reviewers have rightly pointed out. Be clever, and nip in for a very tasty breakfast and walk away happy. That's all I'm saying. read more

We visited this cafe for lunch while staying in Brighton. It was so busy at the weekend that we had to return on a weekday to manage to get a table - but the staff were very helpful when there wasn't any room and actually advised us as to where else we could go. When we finally managed to eat there (attracted by the look of the place as much as anything - the high shelves full of products and the counters with amazing artistic creations all entirely edible) we weren't disappointed. I decided to have something very plain and they managed to do it well - not always easy to find. My husband had a humble bacon butty and they managed to get the bacon lovely and crisp which doesn't usually happen. The service was very good - lots of attention to detail. Yes there may be queues on a weekend morning to get a table for breakfast, but the fact that people are happy to do so, is testament to the food and service provided at Bill's. People can browse the shelves whilst browsing, or have a good old catch up with friends whilst waiting which makes the time pass quickly., The atmosphere is buzzing and friendly, and whenever I have friends visit me from out of town, I will bring them here for breakfast and they love it. I love the simpleness of the menu, and their scrumptious desserts. read more

This is a spacious restaurant serving the usual Bill's fate. Breakfast is good, with a lot of sweet and savoury options, and on weekdays the restaurant is virtually empty in the morning. This is worth a visit if you want something sit-down. read more

I had dinner here with some friends who had been raving about it. When I walked in my first thought was this is awful. It's like you're in a warehouse and i know some people think that adds character, i just thought it was uncomfortable. The food was amazingly overpriced and not very good. I had to send back my food because it wasn't cooked properly and the replacement didn't taste very nice either. The only redeeming feature is the staff who were really nice and friendly. The service was a bit slow at times but the friendliness of the staff made up for that. read more

I used to love this place but like many that are so good when they open, it has sadly declined over time. On my most recent visit I ordered the fish pie, not particularly cheap at around £10, and the portion that arrived was simply miniscule. Ive been.here on my England vacation and it was awesome! Supreme service, we got ur fresh made burgers in under 10 minutes, the employeers were friendly and serious. The burgers we ate were hilarious( at this point I have to recommend the vegetarian Burger with halumi and hummus, to quote my father: "the best thing I ate in england"). The drinks(especially the smoothies)are well choosen and tasty. The Atmosphere in the restaurant is nice, the decoration is different and nice. The bills is really recommendable. read more

There really is no where quite like Bill's. Well, I will admit I have not visited every eatery in the world, but I can guarantee you that I have never experienced anything quite like it. The venue, from the outside (this applies to both the Lewes and Brighton branches) looks rather unexciting. In fact, I almost didn't give it a second look. Once you venture inside, however, the experience is much like being sucked into a 'Narnia' of food and drink delight. Stacks of fresh fruit and vegtables line the doorways, and the shelves are stacked high with purchasable home made yummies which you can take home. On the menu, there are a few choice meals, all of which scream taste and tantalization. This restraunt is deffinately a jewel in the Brightonian crown. read more

You can't come to Brighton and not go to Bills. I mean, you can, of course, but you definitely shouldn't. It goes without saying that the food is incredible (but I'll say it again - it is) but my favourite things about Bill's is the amazing space. It has an industrial warehouse sort of feel, with high ceilings and exposed pipes, but at the same time manages to feel like an intimate bistro, it's really quite unique. As well as the dining area there is some mega fresh produce- all kind of weird and wonderful veggies, and a deli section with cakes that I used to take pictures of years before the Instagram foodie monsters came to the fore. I usually go for brunch on a Sunday, and yep, it's busy. Especially during busier summer months, but don't be put off by the queues. Or, go super early. Don't miss out! read more

A sunny and cold day in Brighton followed a freezing cold but very heavy night out in Hove. Breakfast, at the appropriate time of 13.30, saw us heading for Bill's Produce Store on North Road. I was a Bill's virgin but the rest of the party were veterans who led me to this wonderful place. Unremarkable from the outside, save for the plastic curtain/door which gives the impression of entering a butcher's, Bill's is a sight for sore eyes once inside. The walls are lined floor to ceiling with foodie products from oriental rarities (including pickled grubs) to own-label chutneys and oils. The second thing that strikes is the popularity of the place. Yes, it was lunchtime on a Sunday, but the place was teeming. I (in my first-time naivety) felt we would never get a seat but the waitress who served us worked very hard to move people about to accommodate our party of six, while ensuring no one felt they were getting a raw deal. So we sat, and shared the one menu between the whole table (we weren't offered another). I got no further than the first option which was Bill's vegetarian breakfast of toast, two poached eggs, tomatoes, home-made humous, avocado, mushrooms and sweet chilli sauce for an appropriate £6.80. The others around the table went for 3 portions of Bill's breakfast at £7.80, another vegetarian breakfast and an eggs Benedict with ham at £5.85. Coca-cola would have gone down well with one or two of our party to combat rather heavy heads and unsettled stomachs but Bill's does not do Coke. Instead, we asked for a jug of tap water with 6 glasses (we received 6 full glasses but no jug unfortunately which irked the more dehydrated among us) and 4 opted for large fresh orange juices which seemed a little steep to me at £3.20 but exceedingly tasty. I hoped that one of the juices of the day (carrot, orange and ginger at £2.95) would perk me up and indeed it did. Now, I know that as hunger increases, concept of time becomes skewed and a moment can stretch to a lifetime. Even with this in mind, the food did take an inordinately long time. Even our drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive (not good for a table of dehydrated zombies). I spent the time eyeing up others' plates, none of which would I have turned down; it all looked wonderful. Eventually, our food came. It looked good, it looked very good. I was pleased with my choice as it was set down in front of me but the poached eggs looked strange. And with one prod of my fork, I knew that they were seriously overcooked. I glanced around the table and everyone was silently prodding their own poached eggs with curious expressions. I looked at tables around us where other diners were having an identical experience. I'm no chef, but I am aware that the only thing you need to do to not overcook eggs is take them out a tad earlier. Or perhaps a few minutes earlier in this case. What baffles me is that it actually takes more effort and time to overcook an egg than it does to cook it properly which makes me wonder whether they were batch-cooked and reheated upon order which is equally baffling in an eatery which places so much emphasis on 'excellent standards' upheld by those who are 'passionate about food'. Personally, everything else was faultless food wise, although the veterans around the table complained that the bread used for the toast wasn't as good as it usually is. Bellies comfortably full and under the misguided impression that we had made up for what we had put our bodies through the night before, we asked for the bill which presented an apparently substantial problem. Being that most of the party was made up of students on tight budgets, it was agreed that each would pay exactly what s/he owed. I came back to the table from the interestingly unisex toilets with scented toilet paper to a confused conversation about paying some on card, some by cash and then the waitress walked away to let us sort it out amongst ourselves, overlooking the fact that she needed to be there with the machine to put card payments through. When she came back some time later to ask how we were getting on, I said I was just working out what I owed and she walked away again. Eventually, an exasperated member of the party, desperate to get back in time for the Wales-Scotland rugby match which was to start at 3, bellowed 'Can we please just pay?' as soon as a member of waiting staff was within earshot. With some umming and erring, we succeeded but I was surprised as I'm sure, especially in a student town, people often opt to pay separately and it really needn't cause such a problem. Bill's is an excellent concept and a placed I warmed to immediately. The rows of beautiful cakes, adorned with flowers, the shelves of jars and pots and bags and the lively atmosphere all make it a joy to behold. It is a shame that something so easily rectifiable as overcooked eggs should mar an otherwise lovely experience. read more

Bill's at Lewes....always been a favourite stop when in town. Has really progressed from a plain lil' ol' flower shop some years ago. Nicely situated by Lower Cliffe car park and pretty central to most shop. Mind you...bit of hike up the hill to the main road. I'm hoping they will get a stair lift put in.!!! read more

Yeah, a solid 4-star place here! I'm not going to mince words here: the paella was amazing, the service was excellent and friendly and the wine was quite nice for being so cheap. I ordered dessert, an eton mess, which was identical to a Pavlova (which happens to be my favorite desert EVER!) so all in all, I loved everything about this place.
