    Italian beef overflows the bun!
    Rod K.

Chicago-style dogs and Italian beef at its best! Indoors there is no sit-down dining, but they have a stand-up counter. Reasonable prices. Employees are courteous.

Deep fried Polish that I didn't order in a plain and stale bun with wilted toppings

I was visiting Evanston and tried Bill's since it's said to be the oldest restaurant in Evanston (1949). The place is a small take out only restaurant. The staff is working behind glass. Orders have to be shouted and the staff has to shout back when they have questions about an order. One of the staff mixed up my order and a similar order (I ordered a polish combo the other customer ordered a deep fried polish only) and the staff wanted me to take the incorrectly made order. The food is acceptable but there are definitely better places. The bun was on the stale side and was plain. The food would receive a grade of C+. As far as being historical, there's nothing about Bill's that gives that vibe. If you didn't know it was the oldest in Evanston nothing about it gives it away. I would give Bill's a pass.

    Hot Italian Beef

Great tasting Italian beef with jardiniere. They gave it a bit much of a juice dunk but the flavor of the beef was awesome. We have tried several beefs with peppers over the years and this place was right up there. The need to lighten up on the au juice dunk which made it a knife and fork meal, but damn good. It's a dive but worth a try in my opinion.

I ordered a Squirt and got this instead.

This food I received was literally burned (see photos). My family had to throw most of this away. While the Manager apologized nonetheless this shouldn't have happened. Why did the cooks over cook/burn the food? This was incredibly thoughtless and we are never coming back.

It gets increasingly hard to find a solid Chicago dog these days. I have plants of old spots but discovering new ones can be difficult. Bills Drive-In to n Evanston is pretty righteous. A solid Chicago style dog. They do it right with mustard onion neon relish tomato slices and celery salt. Not at all bad price these days. It's old school but my first time here. A great stop if you're out on the street.

First thing, I was disappointed they had no hot dog special, you know, like 2 hot dogs, fries and a drink for x dollars. It was all a la cart. And one hot dog was $5.05, fries not included. I decided to get the Herm's special, which is supposed to be a 1/2 lb. Cheeseburger with fries and a drink. It was $18.55 so i figured it was going to be on par with Five Guys, which charges around $21 but you get a ton of fries and a really good burger. Ok, I'm waiting for my dinner. Here's where it goes off the rails... While I'm sitting, waiting for my food, the guy is making a hot dog for another customer. He's holding the bun in his left hand (no gloves), while applying the condiments. After he's done, he takes money from the customer with the same hand, and proceeds to make another hot dog, with the same unwashed hand. That's a major red flag. My burger arrived shortly after that. The burger? Good but undersized for the price. The fries were thin and average at best. Small portion for the price. I had to use the bathroom downstairs, and it was out of soap. Another red flag there. Look, Poochie's is better, cheaper, cleaner, and right down the road. Sorry, but I was disappointed with Herm's.

My usual spots are Roma's and Jay's, and I'll take Little Island's beef all day over those two. It's roasted in-house (like any proper beef should be) and less dry than you'll find at a bunch of the more well-known joints. Good bread and giardiniera as well. If the Evanston location raises an eyebrow, know that this is an old-school beef, burger and dog joint that would fit in in any Chicago neighborhood. The charburgers are standard charburgers--totally fine, but I make the journey for the outstanding beef. You'll also always find the same friendly guy manning the grill and register (owner, I think), and not much else (if any) staff. I like a place that's completely consistent in familiarity, customer experience, quality. It also may be the most inexpensive restaurant in Evanston. While beef prices have skyrocketed in recent years (an equal-sized Roma's beef is about $4 more), you get one of the best and tastiest beefs in Chicagoland here for under $8 (as of this writing). Their giardiniera cheese fries (with Merkt's--i.e., the creme de la creme of cheese-fry cheese) were also featured in Chicago mag as one of the "Nine Best Ways to Experience Giardiniera"--although I have yet to try those...

I have driven by the ginormous hot dog on a carving fork numerous times, and finally made it a point to stop in. The vibe inside is old school. It reminds me of the counter service places of decades ago, not that I was alive. The same goes for the no-nonsense service, the analog menu, and little tickets with your order number. Don't misunderstand, the service, while efficient, was perfectly polite. And the upholstery and other furnishings are in tiptop shape. Everything is also very clean. Further, unlike many old school type places, they do accept credit cards. The Polish sausage was okay. I don't believe this is supposed to be a revolutionary, mind-blowing product, so no worries there. The only quibble I have is that the moisture caused it to fall apart easily, quickly making it a fork-and-knife affair. Where it comes to the Chicago dog, this one was great! Not only was it technically perfect and well-balanced, it also had that characteristic snap that few places have been able to deliver on. Only as a matter of personal preference I would've liked a touch more celery salt, but that's exclusively a 'me' thing. This one did not at all fall apart, even though it was the second one I ate, Finally, I want to award points for the value. While the Polish is a little bit up there, the hotdog is served at a terrific price, seemingly beaten out only by Costco! While Wolfy's is a little out of the way to take out-of-town visitors to, if it is along the way, you can be more than sure we'd be stopping in.

I am satisfied with their response and improve my rating from 1 to 4 stars This isn't a negative review of the food which was the standard chain quality (good but don't splurge on it much for health reasons). I was in the area for a play and picked up a local friend. I went here because an acquaintance (who since died) gave me multiple gift cards to Portillos which I needed to use. I had 4 cards, not sure how much was left on them. We got $27 worth of food and I started handing the cashier the cards. She told me to scan them on the read light reader. Only one had a scannable bar code. She was not sure how to read the others. My friend suggested she swipe it on keyboard, she didn't seem to know this already. Card 1 red light scanned ok. Card 2 swiped ok. Card 3 she swiped and it didn't register, unclear if it worked. Card 4 brought the total to 0$. She wasn't going to give the last 2 cards back and asked for the other two. My tried to clarify that card 4 might have value left, she confidently said no. I was suspicious since the total couldn't have exactly matched my bill. The next day I looked at the receipt and it clearly said there was money left on the card, over 8$. It's unclear whether card 3 had money or she just didn't scan it. I'm presuming this was poor training but it has an element of malicious intent since she was so confident I had nothing left on the card and requested keeping all the cards. If you have gift cards beware going here unless staff are trained. Receipt attached for proof. If the business is reading this, can I cat my money back? Card 3 was for $10 value but not clear if it was touched or not.
