I was born and raised in Evanston but moved away in 1972. But before then visited Bills back when you got a burger or dog for 19 cents. No fries anything else besides a bag of chips if I remember correctly. Nothing fancy but a good burger alternative to McDonalds. So it's my general expectation that if i am a hop, skip, and a jump from Chicago's boundaries and I order a hot dog with everything I will get a Chicago Style Dog. You know with mustard, onions, neon relish, pickles, tomatoes, celery salt generously sprinkled all on a poppy seed bun. Instead I got a dog I would expect if I was lost in some God forsaken place. No poppyseed bun, yes those poppyseeds make a difference. No relish, and no pickle. Then to top it off I guess they use a Leon style dog which seemed like a cheap version of Vienna. It had no bite and was very much lacking taste. Maybe they were not trying to make a Chicago Style Hot Dog, maybe they were doing something different but it's the wrong move. Bad decision. Its the kind of thing that will get you whacked. You might be 50 yards from Chicago City limits but that's no excuse to serve a crappy dog. In addition to the dog I also tried their double cheeseburger. While it was better than their dog I was not crazy about it either. They are small griddle patties with cheese but with no seasoning they are nothing special. I mean no disrespect towards a mom-n-pop operation, i went to the darn place because of it, but the food just isn't that good. It is cheap so for those who only have a few bucks in their pocket they will save you from starvation. This place is probably been around in this neighborhood for years and years. I like to come in here once in a while. It's been a while since I've been here. This place is actually really affordable. I had a hot dog with everything on it and fries and it was like $6 and 35 cents or something. They're quick and here. And you know they're probably open like maybe early lunch through early dinner. You just walk in and get your food and leave. There's no eating area except for maybe a picnic table that you might want to eat at in the summer time. Other than that just get your food and go. It's good food for what it is. They got a pretty good menu of items that are related to this place. Hamburgers hot dogs french fries chili things like that. read more

I went to Bill's today, it seems like these are new owners yet again. Be prepared the prices have really gone up! I paid $9 and some change for just two cheeseburgers. That's kinda high because the burgers are really thin. I've been going to Bill's when the original owners were there in the 60's as a kid with my mother & sister. It's not quite the same. The burgers tasted ok but I noticed small portions of the edges of the burger looked stale and felt tough. Never experienced this before. Seems like the quality of the food has gone down while the price has gone way up. I don't know if I'll ever return. The burgers are cooked to order and are excellent. I love the hot dogs too. They're not Vienna and I'm not sure of the brand but are excellent. I have eaten in this place a number of times. I would have to say this is some of the best kind of fast food you can get in this area. They're friendly in here. Hot dogs are good. They're made just like you would want them. The hamburgers and all that stuff the French fries. And I believe they take debit and credit cards along with cash. It's not too far from CTA and Pace bus routes. So you can ride the 49 Western and 97 Skokie the 206 CTA bus and the 215 Pace bus the Howard and Western and then just walk a little bit north of there. A classic 1960s-'70s style hot dog place. There are fewer every year and we need to appreciate them. Not a drive-in. You'll walk in and interact with actual humans, then eat some uniquely good food: lacy thin burgers best ordered as doubles at minimum, good crunchy skin dogs on steamed rolls and the other usual suspects. I've only been here twice but consider this one of my favorite burger joints, they really know how to construct a burger here, the quad is just amazing. I had a double on my most recent visit, quality had slipped just a little, burger could have been cooked just a little more, French Fries a little off but still very good. I like the way they sack the Fries. Prices are more than reasonable, can't go wrong here. Important note, you order at the first window and let the cook know what you want on your sandwich at the second window as your order is completed, just remember if you want grilled onions you need to indicate this when initially ordering at the first window. A little complicated but I like this process, wish they had later hours, watch out I believe they close around 7 pm. If you are up to it, I suggest the quad, this is a 4 patty masterpiece that is so well constructed you can eat it with one hand, incredible. read more

This probably was one of the few places I'd never gotten around to eating at in the Howard St. area, and finally got around to trying it while driving inbetween where I was assigned to work in Evanston and Chicago. The burger was very decent, but the fries were the type where there was something that was slightly lacking about them, but were tolerable. (but they are better than Steak 'n Shake's crappy fries) Tried a chocolate shake on a whim over getting a soda(and not knowing when I'll ever be back here), and I did like that. It felt in the end like an improved version of McDonald's, and it's ironic to think McDonald's started as a walk-up burger stand with no seating, just like this place is. I love old school institutions that you can just tell have been around a long time the minute you pull up. I went here on my buddy Jay Ks's recommended review and was very pleased with my triple cheeseburger. The patties are fairly small, which worried me b/c I prefer a thicker patty. But the burger was definitely awesome, and the price was right. Got a Chicago style hot dawg as well but was a bit less impressed by the dog. It was steamed and I do prefer mine charred but it doesn't appear that they do char dogs here....please correct me if I'm wrong and I will go back and do it right. Love the prices here, they are more than fair and the food is terrific!! It is great that places like this still exist. You can say retro, old school, it harks back to days when a hot dog stand was a hot dog stand and everything wasn't so sit down. You drive in on one side of the lot, park, go into the stand that was built along the front of the property, eat and drive out on the other side of the lot. Eat either standing up inside the shack (a counter that faces the street), one of the picnic benches outside directly behind the shack (hold onto your napkins) or in your car (no poppy seeds to worry about). The items on the menu aren't that great, I mean you are not going to start salivating if you're already familiar with this place when I mention going to it. Well, maybe if you are extremely hungry, your main food staple is a bag of Cheetos, recently lit up a bong or in need of a hang over fix. They have a griddle, no grill, hot dog station, fryer and I believe a soft serve machine. 1.6 oz. frozen hamburger patties, Leon Hot Dogs and frozen fries should say it all. Every time I've ordered, the service generally has been prompt, courteous and friendly. From what I see, the place is still clean. No Vienna or Red Hot Chicago, they offer a breed of dog that is getting even rarer at stands, a Leon. An authentic Tast-e Hast-e style dog can't exist without them, toppings are similiar to what is offered today at Byon's and Murphy's. Hmm, Byron's and Murphy's use a Vienna and Bill's doesn't offer all those garden style toppings. I hate to say it, I just can't stand those Leon's even with regular toppings and one day I tried it with chili, raw onions and cheese. This is the only thing that keeps me ever so often popping into Bills. Even though I've had better, I'm not going to give an average or bad rating to a mom and pop operation that tries to give value and is consistent in service. They could do better, a Paradise Pup thing, but the value benefit would certainly be lost. read more

They've clearly seen it all and their interactions with the clients reflect that.
