Is is the drive in version! It is the original Suoerdawg! You can order inside or from your vehicle. They would bring it to the . They have a few tables inside! They have picnic tables outside! I love the fried vegetables . The sandwiches without fries are 2:50 cheaper! The malts are thick and delicious ! I got the hot dog with everything but peppers . But it would be fine either way so . I like the one in Wheeling also it's a little more resturant fast food style! One day I will by a tee shirt

The uniqueness of the drive in is pretty awesome. Even so I opted to walk up to the ordering window. It was confusing at first but I had a lot of help from the locals who are very sweet and friendly here in Chicago. First, you walk up to order at the first window and receive a ticket. Next, you wait for your number to be called at the second window next to the ordering window and pay when you get your food. Guess it's easier than I made it out to be, haha. I ordered the Superdawg which also came with some crinkle cut fries. The wiener itself was super plump and extremely flavorful. The fries were nice and crispy. Overall a decent experience. Getting into the lot was a bit difficult for me, but eventually I figured it out. They also had a lot of cute merch for sale at the walk up window!

Great neighborhood iconic spot known city wide - the original location! Great food great fries and great owners! I highly recommend the whoopercheesie if you like hamburgers - they are not only known for their hot dogs

Not a fan of the forceful tipping by automated suggestion. Otherwise, for 12:14pm on a Friday the fries are not the freshest and that's shocking. I figured lunch rush would afford the optimal serving and service. At any rate, I can say I tried them and had the experience.

You literally cannot miss Superdawg from the road. You'll see the huge hotdog couple with their bright red light up eyes way before you see the rest of the restaurant. The parking lot is moderately sized (probably considered big for the city), and there are many spots to pull in and order from your car window to the little call box in the parking spot. These are set up for both driver and passenger windows to be ordered from. There are also a few tables for outside seating and a walk up window to order from that is enclosed in a little hallway like space with a few inside seats as well. We had three in our group for a mid afternoon late lunch stop after an O'Hare pick up. My dad and sister had never been to the city and I was tasked with a great chicago dog experience. We ordered at the walk up window, three superdawgs with fries and drinks. We waiting only a handful of minutes for our order and it all came in a brown bag, and we walked out to the outside table. It turned out they had only given us two superdawgs, so I went back in to request the third we paid for. They reviewed the receipt and without saying anything just provided the third hot dog and that was that! I love superdawg because the hotdogs come neatly in a little box with the fries smashed in and it's all self contained. Their hotdog with all the toppings is one of my favorites. Service is fast, and it's so nice to not have to get out of your car if you don't want. This is an iconic little joint on the northside with easy parking and delicious food, so I definitely recommend it. I know everyone has an opinion on their favorite Chicago dog in the city, so I certainly won't try to tell anyone they're wrong, but this is definitely a fun spot worth stopping at. Thank you Superdawg for a great showing of a Chicago classic to my family! See you soon!

I'm not local, but I've heard of Superdawg because of food shows on the Travel Channel back in 2010s. I finally got a chance to go when I was in Chicago and stayed outside of downtown. I ordered inside the restaurant instead of the car hop intercom. The cashier is incredibly nice and helpful. I got the Superdawg, which came neatly packed in a box with a Chicago dog and fries. It was delicious. Highly recommended it you get a chance to visit.

Best hotdog in Chicago in my opinion. Larger than most places a little on the pricey side but backs it up with portion size and taste.

I found out about Superdawg on a YouTube vlog on things to eat in Chicago! So glad I went because this place is awesome! It has a cool 1950s diner/drive in feel that is so charming! On top of that, the food is actually really good!! The fries were probably some of the best I've had -- I'm a sucker for a good crinkle cut! And the hotdog itself is loaded with so many tasty toppings! A must if you're visiting Chicago!

You can argue whether it's the best dog or not, but it's by far my favorite overall package. Box packed with fries, rust pickled tomato...hot dog beaten to death by the fries above. Legend.

Food ---Amazing! The quality they use is good and delicious. Service- pretty fast! We place an order in the drive thru & got our order within 10 mins. Ambience - Nothing so fancy. Just a classic drive thru :)

It had been years since I last had Superdawg, but with one bite, I instantly remembered why this place is always so busy and loved. I've always remembered the iconic Superdawg mascots on the roof from when I was a kid and I love that they're still up there. You can pull up in your car and order right from your window. They'll bring the food out to you so you can enjoy it in your car. If you prefer, you can walk up to the counter and order inside. There's a small indoor seating area and a few benches outside for dining as well. The Superdawg itself is delicious. It's served in their cool packaging box with a green tomato, sport peppers, and packed in the box with warm crinkle cut fries. The Superburger is also really good, with the same neon green relish and onions you find on the Superdawg. It's also served with fresh fries on the side. Superdawg is a true Chicago gem, and it's easy to see why they've been going strong for over 75 years.

    Superdawg and fries. Delicious!

Ask the Community - Superdawg Drive-In

I'm from out of town and really want to try a superdawg, but I don't have a car. Is there seating where I can sit and eat my food without a car?

    Yes. Picnic tables outside.

What kind of oil is used for fried items?

Hiya! It’s a vegetable and beef shortening mix. Thanks!

Does this establishment carry ketchup? If so, am I going to be turned away for asking for it?

Yes, they carry ketchup. They might not put it on your hot dog, but rather give it to you in packets so you can "ruin it yourself" .

I know the franks aren't Vienna Beef. Anyone know the brand served there?

    They make their own.

Does this place have any gluten free options?

Hiya Kayla, We do not have a gluten free bun, but our Superdawgs and Superburgers without buns do not contain gluten. Thanks!

Does anyone know where they get their pickled green tomatoes and pickles?

Chicago pickles on Randolph. Or at least it used to be. Randolph one block west of Halsted on the left side of the street.

    Are the hot dogs kosher?

    all beef no pork

Fortunately Portillo's offers both and it was recommended by locals and previous travelers to make this my one restaurant to try both. I arrived on foot on a Saturday before 10pm and there was a long line to order on the kiosks and a security guard by the door. The restaurant has two floors of seating with dated decor all around, assumingly part of the intended vibe of the establishment. The first floor seating was all taken but there were plenty of tables available on the second floor. I was able to try Portillo's hot dog and Italian beef sandwich. The hot dog included mustard, relish, celery salt, freshly chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, pickle, and peppers on a poppy seed bun. The paper wrapper was strategically wrapped around the Chicago dog inside out, knowing that the logo would be clearly visible when people take pictures of the unwrapped hot dog. I ordered a regular hot dog but probably should've ordered a jumbo hot dog for a dollar more since then regular was tiny; for comparison it was definitely smaller than a Costco hot dog. Although the toppings complemented the hot dog well, the bun was soggy from being wrapped in the paper for only a few minutes. The standard big Italian beef sandwich (slightly wet) was much larger for more than double the price of the hot dog, with no Portillo's branding on that wrapper. I was a little too excited to order this that I forgot to add sweet and hot peppers, but the sandwich still tasted very good. After ordering I realized I probably should've ordered the gravy on the side so I can dip the sandwich more, but again it was still very good. For dessert I tried the lemon cake slice and strawberry shortcake. The lemon cake was a little dry and really sweet and the strawberry shortcake had a little too much mascarpone cheese whipped topping for my liking, but of course I didn't have to finish it all. Portillo's is a good option for casual fast food and for travelers to try. I definitely prefer the Italian beef sandwich over the Chicago dog, but that is my personal preference. For a sweet treat, the strawberry shortcake is a nice option if no other dessert places are nearby. To save time during peak hours, it may be a good idea to order ahead on the mobile app.

It has that classic late night comfort food vibe and feels like one of those staple spots you have to try at least once. First night I ordered a polish hot dog with everything on it and a fish sandwich w/ extra grilled onions. Super cool that your order comes with fries and I added a cheese cup both times. In my opinion the fries were mid the first go around, but second time they were better. Definitely tasted better dipped in cheese. They were kinda airy in texture, if that makes sense. Polish hot dog was around a 6.5-7/10 for me. It did taste better warmed up the next day. What I was most obsessed with was the double cheeseburger and fish sandwich! both were easily a 10/10. Super good prices and worth the money. Also, the chile peppers were sooo bomb and hotter than I expected ! I wanted to eat them all, but they were packing some serious heat! The lemon Italian ice is where it's at, make sure to order one! You can also mix it with strawberry, but both times people recommended the lemon and now I see why. The hot dogs were good i wasn't disappointed nice soft bun tasty condiments and a great snap to the hot dogs. I'll give it a 7/10. The fries had a decent amount of salt on them a bit oily and not too crispy but they were fair. They don't have any ketchup in the house. After we ordered a vegan Chicago dog with a soda for me and a vegan Chicago dog with a bucket of fries for hubby, our food was quickly prepared and delivered. Although my vegan hot dog was cooked well, I was slightly annoyed at how quickly the dog fell out of the bun and the large amount of neon green relish which minimize the other flavors of the hot dog. Likewise, I was saddened and surprised and that none of their sides (fries and tater tots) are vegan friendly since they cook these items in beef tallow. Overall, while the vegan hot dog was delicious, I feel that $7 is a bit pricey for a vegan hotdog especially when there aren't any vegan sides available.
