Can you all believe it has taken over a year living in Chicago for me to try a Polish dog? Better late than never, I suppose. I have driven by the ginormous hot dog on a carving fork numerous times, and finally made it a point to stop in. The vibe inside is old school. It reminds me of the counter service places of decades ago, not that I was alive. The same goes for the no-nonsense service, the analog menu, and little tickets with your order number. Don't misunderstand, the service, while efficient, was perfectly polite. And the upholstery and other furnishings are in tiptop shape. Everything is also very clean. Further, unlike many old school type places, they do accept credit cards. The Polish sausage was okay. I don't believe this is supposed to be a revolutionary, mind-blowing product, so no worries there. The only quibble I have is that the moisture caused it to fall apart easily, quickly making it a fork-and-knife affair. Where it comes to the Chicago dog, this one was great! Not only was it technically perfect and well-balanced, it also had that characteristic snap that few places have been able to deliver on. Only as a matter of personal preference I would've liked a touch more celery salt, but that's exclusively a 'me' thing. This one did not at all fall apart, even though it was the second one I ate, Finally, I want to award points for the value. While the Polish is a little bit up there, the hotdog is served at a terrific price, seemingly beaten out only by Costco! While Wolfy's is a little out of the way to take out-of-town visitors to, if it is along the way, you can be more than sure we'd be stopping in. read more

Every time I come home, I make an effort to hit up Wolfy's. It's a perfect little diner atmosphere, the service is always prompt and friendly but not in that weird saccharin way, and nothing makes it to their menu without being excellent first. I went here once as a kid, and yearned to return. Almost 15 years later, I went back. I got the double cheese burger, a gyro, fries, and an Oreo shake. All the food was amazing. Probably a top 5 burger in my area. The shake was out of this world too. Never had an Oreo shake like that. The cashier was very friendly, and the staff were very nice. As a Chicagoan I recommend Wolfy's as the best, most authentic & delicious Chicago style hot dog. It has a quality Vienna dog, neon relish and fresh onions. My only complaint is they tend to forget to hold the sport peppers even when reminded. A lot of places throw in fresh hot fries for free which is often why I go elsewhere, but I've been a Wolfy's patron a long time and will return. Of the 25+ hot dog stands I've tried in Chicago, this is my favorite. Their classic jumbo char dog is perfect and their is no shortage of toppings from the garden. As noted by others their fries are outstanding too. Crispy, salty and very much like McDonald's fries. Another day, another dog. I was out on my exercise loop and on my way back, I stopped and had the one hotdog special with fries and a pop. I needed that extra energy so I can get home. Ordered my food and it was out quickly. This place never disappoints. The fixing on the dog was Chicago Style and had plenty of peppers and celery salt. Yum! The fries are almost close to shoestring but not quite. They were hot and crispy. I had to slow down eating them so I can have them with my dog. Maybe it was a bad day at Wolfy's, or maybe being the first ones in the door at opening time isn't a good idea. But the three of us agreed that Wolfy's didn't live up to the hype. Over the years, we've been trying to slowly work our way through as many different Chicago hot dog and/or Italian beef spots as we reasonably can (by "reasonably," I mean one per Chicago visit), and Wolfy's is highly ranked on multiple lists on reputable food sites. And the sign out front--with a big hot dog speared on a grilling fork--is a classic of its kind. The inside, too, has plenty of old-school hot-dog-joint charm, with lots of red-and-white tile and brick. I had the Italian beef (maybe a mistake at a place apparently not renowned for them). The wife had a Maxwell Street Polish, and the brother-in-law had a regular Chicago dog. For each of us, the verdict was that we'd had better elsewhere in town. The Italian beef was massive--no complaints there--but rather dried out and lacking in flavor. (Unfortunately, I can speak to the specific shortcomings of the wife's and brother-in-law's items, although I can say that buns on those dogs were falling apart before they were halfway through them.) Fries were piping hot and solid, though! Service was kinda perfunctory. Maybe that's what you should expect in a Chicago hot dog joint--this isn't fine dining, after all--but we've certainly had some other Chicago hot dog proprietors go out of their way to be super-friendly and welcoming in the past. read more

I always get a craving for hot dogs around those traditional grilling holidays like Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day, and that was the case this year for Independence Day--but I don't have a grill nor will we eat eight hot dogs so it's always a matter of where I'm going to find one. This time it was Wolfy's, which was literally blocks from my home when I lived West Ridge. The place is solid and has been around for over 50 years so it must be doing something right. I love this place since I grew up eating here and come back because the food is amazingg. My friends also love coming here any chance we get and I have a friend who enjoys ordering something different each time and most of the time his experience with anything different has been a 5/5. For anyone who may think only their hot dog would be good. The owner tends to recognize us time-to-time and it feels nice and heart-warming! Considering that they are often busy when we come and maybe come here like once every 3 months or so? To avoid eating too unhealthy. The staff comes off awkward at times even though they always the same people working but you know what I get them. Introvert at heart but got to make that paper, as long as they aren't rude that is good enough for me :) Yes there were rare moments of the food being mid but never bad. The fries are crazy good and I am always craving it because of how well they make it!!! My favorite is the #1 (burger) but the hot dogs are always hitting too. Simply delicious. I was feeling under the weather before visiting and this food made my day. Service was friendly and quick. I got the two hot dog meal, which was a reasonable price, and waited under five minutes for my food even though the restaurant was busy. I decided to eat in, and the tables and floors of the place were clean and well attended to. The hot dog was perfect, loaded with the right seasoning of celery salt and juicy peppers that tasted great with the pickle and relish. The black poppy seed bun was warm and the food was overall very good because of its balance of flavors. The fries tasted fresh and were thin and crispy, similar to McDonald's fries or the ones from J's Corner. Other menu items that customers were eating, like the gyro salad or one of the burgers, looked good as well and I will definitely be back to try some of the other food here. read more

This is a fun little spot in the north part of Chicago. If the signage doesn't catch your eye and make you want to at least pull in the parking lot for a selfie.... then, well, whatever. I used to live relatively close, but now I am a considerable distance so stopping here basically means "special trip" Wolfy's is one of those "Chicago greasy spoon institutions" I guess. You can get the classic Chicago dog or a variety of other staples like burgers, beefs, and even the cheesesteak has permeated the menu. Quintessential blue-collar food. Might not be a special journey for a regular place to eat. Go at least once to admire the signage, but unless you're close enough to make the trip an acceptable detour, then find a spot closer to where you live. Still, I will stop by once in a while. COVID notes: All employees wear masks and there is no indoor dining. There are marked enter and exit signs. There's not a lot of space inside so by-the-books distancing might be tricky during peak hours, but they seem to otherwise be cognizant of rules put in place. read more

Wolfy's is hard to miss -- it's huge replica of a fork with a hotdog -- towers above Peterson St. but the food is what really makes it a can't miss. The line for Wolfy's on a Thursday evening was out the door, which was a signal that the food was going to be great! I joined the line and it went fast! I ordered a jumbo char dog and fries. The fries were hot and crispy with a similar taste to McDonald's and the jumbo char dog was perfectly grilled.
