Billy sushi is my favorite spot to get sushi in Minneapolis. But I recommend PLANNING AHEAD as the reservations fill up about a month in advance (if you want a specific date/time on the weekend.) The music is always bumpin, the vibes are up, and the food is delish. It is my top spot for taking people out for special occasion dinners, and maybe if you're lucky you'll get a free round of overflowing sake as a birthday treat. (This was probably just because I knew one of the waitstaff members and it was my mom's birthday). NOW FOR THE FOOD: The George Clooney roll is one of my all time favorites, it's just perfect and delicious every time. I also almost always get the Bill San's Po Boy for an appetizer because I love a bang bang shrimp adjacent dish. The shrimp is nice and meaty. I typically skip the Screaming O; ONLY because I don't love rolls that have heat applied to them (I especially despise rolls that are fully deep fried) BUT I got the screaming O at my last visit and it did not disappoint!! I will order again in the future. One "must try" that I would skip is the JFC. I love fried chicken, and the dipping sauce is nice, but the one time I ordered this, the chicken was a bit tough and dry.. not sure what happened there. Best and freshest sushi in Minnesota! I've tried so many sushi places in Minneapolis and have yet to find a spot comparable to places I've eaten at in California where the types of fish used for sushi are much more accessible. Please put the sush in my bouche at Billy Sushi because I don't think I want to eat at another sushi place in MN except for Billy Sushi. I've had a lot of sushi. I've had sushi in LA, in SF, in Seattle, in NYC, in MN. Short of going overseas and planting myself in an actual sushi bar in Japan, I'd like to think I've tried a good amount of sushi and I know what I like and what is "good" sushi in the states. Billy Sushi is as close to pretty damn good for sushi as you're going to find in MN, and beats out (in my opinion) some of the other places I've tried on the coasts. Let's start with the meal. Sake. Not only do they have an incredible extensive list of drink options in general, but their sake options are pretty expansive. I ordered the akitabare junmai, and apparently it was a pour over - which meant they filled my 4 oz glass...and kept going. Needless to say, I did not finish that sake glass, but hey. Kampai. For an appetizer, my friend and I split the yuzu tuna, which was a dish of 7 sashimi slices of fatty tuna, with a citrus sauce. If there is only one thing you get here, get this. The fatty tuna just melts in your mouth, and the citrus sauce is nice and bright and cuts through the fat. We were tempted to just order another one - it was that good. Instead, we opted for some maki. I ordered the Toro Mania, while my friend ordered the George Clooney. The names are kind of zany (the whole menu is) but I felt like it added to the charm of the place. The Toro Mania is definitely for masago lovers, as it's topped with it, and the inside consists of bluefin tuna with a yuzu sauce. Overall, it was delicious - the masago on top is perfectly fishy and salty, and complements the smooth fattiness of the tuna. Living in MN, I've expected my sushi to taste not nearly as fresh as coastal joints, but I was surprised at how fresh the tuna, both in the appetizer and in the maki, tasted. Oftentimes, low quality fish passes in sushi joints due to rolls with abundance of rice and sauces, but the quality of fish found at Billy Sushi was a pleasant surprise. It's a welcome addition to the upper Midwest food scene, and I'll definitely be going back. read more

We booked a reservation here for our one-year anniversary, and it did not disappoint. Reservations are definitely a must. My husband practically grew up in Hawaii, and after getting engaged there, we've had our fair share of fresh sushi and fish. This place is absolutely on par with the sushi in Hawaii. The service was friendly and quick, and my cocktail arrived at the table almost as soon as I ordered it. The restaurant was very clean and beautifully decorated. So amazing! From the moment you walk in, and take in the atmosphere, Billy Sushi is already impressing. All of our rolls were delicious, and we were so happy! The Salmon Carpaccio was so amazingly fresh. Mistletoe and Double D were our favorites. I especially loved the flavor of their crab - you could tell it wasn't the imitation crab usually found in California rolls. For drinks, we tested out the Keys to Paradise cocktail, on recommendation of our server, and loved it! Finally, we had some Sake, though I'm not sure which bottle it was from. To top off the meal, the owner, Billy, sat down with us and chatted for a while! It was amazing to hear of his time throughout sushi restaurants in the Minneapolis suburbs and how opening Billy Sushi in the pandemic has gone. We went at about 6pm before the dinner rush so we were seated without reservations thankfully so plan ahead! Parking is also tricky so another thing to consider before your dinner date. Seriously not an empty seat in the whole place. Guests seems to all be enjoying themselves and the sushi chefs were hard at work. The sashimi cuts were generous and so fresh! I always order sashimi when I go to sushi, so I can get a food feels of the quality of the fish. Both rolls contained a generous portion of fish, were the perfect portions for 2 to share. I'm a sucker for anything topped with tobiko! STAFF: We sat at the sushi bar and got to experience the sushi chefs doing their best work. The chef right in front of us prepared our order so precisely it was so satisfying to watch! Our server was at the ready, refilling waters as necessary and checking in on us when needed. Manager was trying to get our table ready and we were trying to see if we can get a table closer together with our friends. Boss came to us and yelled "you can either sit or stand". From the ladies at the door seating people, to the bartenders and the waiters, it's all been great. I'm a huge unagi fan and the Oh Em Gii roll had the most perfect pieces of unagi, I'd go back just for that. Otherwise the Oh Em Gii isn't worth the hype for the gold flakes but the roll itself is great. The quality of the fish is fantastic and the restaurant itself is beautiful inside, and our waiter was great with recommending great appetizers and drinks. We'll be coming back just for the omakase! Billy Sushi is hands down one of the best sushi restaurants in the cities. I typically always go for one of the sashimi platters, accompanied by one of their many creative rolls. I find that the fish is always fresh and flavorful. (If you ever get a chance to try the O-toro, it will blow you away). They have a wonderful selection of cocktails, which I'm a big fan of. My husband and I visited a Billy Sushi for a date night while in town visiting family. Sushi is our favorite date night meal, and we wanted to try some where different. Based on the reviews we chose Billy Sushi and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is very intimate and beautiful on the inside. We chose to sit at a table, but you can sit at the bar and watch the sushi chef's make your food. We ordered the yuzu tuna and four rolls; B.A.D and Boujee, George Clooney, Naughty Ninja, and the Mistletoe. The yuzu tuna was wonderful. The tuna was super fresh and clean tasting and was wonderfully complemented by the yuzu. Our favorite roll was by far the B.A.D and Boujee. It's chopped fatty tuna, spring onion, tempura shrimp topped with salmon, avocado, cilantro and eel sauce. Half of the roll is topped with avocado and the other half with the salmon. We loved it and the cilantro was my favorite part. It came highly recommended by our server, Suheily, who was absolutely fabulous. She was so friendly, knowledgeable, and took great care of us. Our least favorite roll was the mistletoe. Neither of us were fans of the snapper, but that was just due to our preference. All of the fish was very fresh tasting, though! We were seated in front of the sushi bar and the sushi chefs were all so friendly and fun. This is THE BEST sushi house in MN hands down. Billy started with his flagship sushi house Sushi Fix in Wayzata which became quickly the best done sushi in the Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs. He relinquished this spot and decided after some time, to do what he does best. This fish is so fresh, brought in from Japan on the daily. The chefs and the dining experience brought forth by dining here is outstanding. We chose omakase, although their specialty rolls are fantastic as well. We sat at the sushi counter and had one on one attention from the staff. We also felt that it was very safe with universal masking and distancing. The omakase was buttery and rich, an assortment of the best. The otoro was outstanding. We added the poke bowl which may have been too much given round after round of incredible preparations. Memorable was also the A5 Wagyu surf and turf roll, so decadent! In addition, the Hibuki Harmony whisky plus so many other high end options were perfect to pair. Also, Billy is known for his personalized attention to his guests and the aesthetic in his restaurants. The restrooms are always unforgettable in Billy style, exterior and interior!! I highly recommend visiting this gem of a sushi house and getting a chance to know Billy. You won't regret the your time here. FYI, it is a bit spendy, but it is worth every dime. read more

We were seated at the corner front table for a party of two. The table next to us was vacant which allowed for social distancing. The ambiance is light and airy. The bathroom has black toilets and American movie posters in Japanese. For an app, we ordered bluefin akami toro (lean cut - my fav). 5 delicious slabs of nice red and juicy bluefin tuna. It was so good! For the main, we order the George Clooney and Double D. Of these 2, I loved the George Clooney. The unagi sauce was a fine touch. For dessert, we ordered bluefin chutoro (medium fatty cut). This order had 4 slabs. If you want a unique experience, I dare you to put a chutoro slab in your mouth and force your tongue in an upwards fashion; feel the chutoro just melt in your mouth. Pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of fish at this sushi restaurant coming from the west coast. I really enjoyed my 10 piece chef's choice nigiri. I was served salmon, tuna, ootoro, yellow tail, and flounder. The ratio of rice to fish was good, and I'd say the fish slices were very generous, large and thick! Yellow tail isn't usually my nigiri of choice, but it was so sweet here it ended up being my favorite tonight. The ootoro was my second favorite nigiri, it was very fatty. I thought the $48 for 10 nigiri pieces was a really great deal considering how much ordering individual nigiri pieces would cost. The tiger maki was good, there's a lot of flavors going on from the fried soft shell crab to the salmon and unagi sauce on top. The JFC was fine, they use white meat and it reminded me of popcorn chicken more than Japanese karaage. Our server was very friendly and checked in on our table often to make sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. I'm super glad I got to try this restaurant tonight and I'd definitely recommend Billy Sushi for good quality fish! read more
