We did Matsu omakase on a Saturday night. All sushi pieces were great flavors, some other dishes flavors were a little off under seasoned or a little bland. The service was not consistent. Servers were very nice but took more than 15 min to order drinks. Needed to ask a few times on smalls things like a straw. Service items were different between tables with the same server Overall we liked it and will go back again. It's more traditional style and fish was pretty fresh. Price of 195/ person is very reasonable for omakase.
What a fun and beautiful tasting menu with Sake pairing! (you can see our collection of cups by midway through) I am not a sake lover, but even I enjoyed tasting each of the different beverages with every course. My favorite sake of the night tasted like a mimosa, and is pictured in the photos. The fish was superb, and the whole experience was very special- highly recommend!
I'll write a more detailed review below, but for those of you looking for a short summary, Kado No Mise is an excellent kaiseki with amazing tasting (and quality) dishes, great service, and a very pleasant setting. However, I feel like the overall amount of food is a bit lacking for the price ($300+ total for two people), even considering how great everything was, and if you are like me and tend to eat a lot, you might go home hungry. We made reservations at Kado No Mise to celebrate a milestone. The online reservation process was easy (be aware, due to the price, you need to put down a deposit). Arrival and seating were pleasant enough, with the hostess taking our coats and introducing us to the concept. Service was great; super attentive with explanations of everything we were served. From the quality of the plates/glassware/chopsticks to the decor, the ambiance does not disappoint. The quality of the food was amazing. We were delighted by many new and unique flavors, especially in the earlier courses. We also were treated to some very unique fish as part of the nigri, many of which we had never trieed before. The star of the night was the tuna; if you are looking for the absolute most rich and delicious tuna you can find in (probably) all of Minnesota, this restaurant is for you. I've only had tuna this good a few times, all near the fish market in Tokyo. The one thing I'll have to take a star off for is the amount of food offered. I feel like, for the price of dinner at Kado No Mise, one should not feel like they need to eat another meal when leaving. I'm not sure how to rectify that since I'm not a restauranteur, but it's the one major hole here. All in all, a very nice experience, just know that you probably won't leave full.
"And now for the worst part of the night: the bill." ~our sushi chef Kado is really a splurge, I will emphasize -- ooff: the bill, but also: it was worth it. My bill was $532 for two, including one sake pairing (do it) and the "service charge" (they don't ask for a tip, so this seems ok). Many of my favorite meals are just that burger, that sushi, that bowl of pho that really hit the spot. Dining out is already an expensive hobby so for folks on an an average budget, how are these ultra expensive meals justified? The bottom line: I took my GF for her birthday, and what we got was a deeply enjoyable dining experience, that also felt like a cultural exploration, and was most importantly delicious. Land-locked Minneapolis is actually pretty well-off in terms of sush. Wakame happy hour and Momo Sushi provide a very nice value, with quality sushi rolls and really some delicious yellow tail, salmon, and tuna sashimi. And if you're feeling bougie, Billy Sushi in the North Loop does offer something *a little* better, very swanky feeling, for like triple the price. Well Kado is more expensive still but what you get is a very authentic, human, cultural experience. And a tangible step beyond the ordinary great sushi: variety of fish outside the trinity (salmon, tuna, yellowtail), freshness you can taste, and the seasoning. Have you realized that when you order sushi, you are responsible for seasoning with wasabi and soy sauce? Here each bite is expertly seasoned with real fresh grated wasabi, house pressed soy sauce, sometimes a squeeze of lime or just a pinch of salt. And the upgrades: Chef's counter omakase: I vote that this is the base experience. There is not an extra charge for this, but spots are more limited and the cheaper "ume" ($70) meal is off the table. While there is a nice dining room, sitting across from the sushi chef and seeing them work as they engage you in conversation is very nice. (One of the chefs, usually in the middle, wears a face mask, is especially funny and engaging) Matsu ($160) vs take ($115): The initial courses will be unique creations followed by the remaining 3/4 of the menu: multiple single bite sushi (raw or cooked fish on rice). (See my photos for examples of both types of courses.) We were seated next to someone who had the cheaper of the two menses. While we shared otherwise the same very enjoyable courses, we got three bonus courses: uni (sea urchin, quite special), cooked eel, and A5 waygu (single bite over rice, blow torched). I will say this these three bonus courses were awesome, and yet the person sitting next to us got everything else we did - these three "Matsu" courses were the proverbial gravy on top, but the meat of the meal can be enjoyed with the fantastic "take"menu. Getting the masu does help with a common critic of Kade: you will leave "Japanese full" but not "American full." Even with the maximum level of courses, if you come hungry you will leave satisfied but not stuffed. Sake pairing: I am not a sake connoisseur, yet I just loved this. You can see in one of my photos three distinct glasses. Each sake came in a distinct, visually striking glass; with its own serving temperature, notes, and pairing rationale provided. I vote get one pairing for two people and share. $60 dollars, but does add an entire new dimension to the experience. Critiques: nothing major. Some may expect to leave full for the price; we got the biggest Matsu menu but felt like splitting an order wings at Runyons after. But we were technically full and certainly holistically satisfied. Desert is minimal, they serve a sort of sorbet (gelatin?) and we "guess the flavor," lovely but desert fans may want more. Service fee: Covid has conditioned us to hate these added fees, I will say when they ran my card there was no line for tip so seems this service fee is appropriately a mandatory tip; I think this is ok. Oh and FYI most of the food isn't hot (isn't even cooked, it's sushi!). But the included miso soup is fantastic! If you're not a big sushi fan, maybe you would rather go to Demi? Trivia: One of their chefs is an official "Goodwill Ambassador for the Promotion of Japanese Food." by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. Final thought Our meal was about $266 per person, was it really worth it? Only you can determine that. To me this felt like a world class dining experience, a mini trip to Japan Bonus, the soundtrack: the restaurant music was a nice jazz playlist, like out of a Haruki Murakami novel. I Want to be Happy (Oscar Peterson Trio), Moonglow (Erroll Garner), Lands End (Harold Land) Additional important info: there are multiple experiences in this combined restaurant - a Japanese whisky bar, an Italian Japanese fusion restaurant, and on Mondays a hot food menu (udon, etc)
I was in Minneapolis for work and my friend mentioned that justonecookbook@IG had recently gone to Minneapolis and had a great time at Kado no Mise. I have never had omakase before and I figured, why not? I made a reservation a few weeks in advance for a solo seat for take ($105/person, but you put down a small deposit to reserve). I felt very welcome upon arrival and was seated promptly. Our chef was very friendly and chit-chatted with me and the other group (I was in a section for four and a different group of 3 was sat next to me) throughout the dinner - which I personally appreciated. He was really nice! The food was absolutely phenomenal and I decided to do the sake pairing, so I was very pleasantly buzzed at the end of the night. The presentation is frankly gorgeous - I'm a bit obsessed with drinkware (any pottery or glassware tbh) and each sake (7 diff ones) came in different cups. I did ask and it turns out the head chef goes to Japan and selects every thing there and brings them back (so it'd be hard to source some for myself sadly). Everything was well thought out, from presentation to the quality and taste of the food. I got little explanations on each of the sakes I tried and info about each fish. I definitely ordered extra pieces and they gave me a wagyu piece on the house . I would 100% recommend Kado no Mise as a treat meal!!
We loved our experience at Kado no mise! I've been wanting to try this place for several years now but COVID got in the way. We finally made it in for a special celebration and went with the omekase option. Our chef was attentive, knowledgeable, and professional. It was a joy to watch him work to prepare each piece and he made sure each was properly introduced. The fish was fresh and delicious and we even tried a few pieces we've never had before like barracuda! The overall ambiance was enjoyable, our drinks were delicious and our glasses were always full. Dessert was fairly standard, nothing particularly special, but the fish that we went for was definitely worth the wait.
I stopped by Kado No Mose and tried out its Omakase. The interior is a good fusion between Japanese style and modern style. The staffs were well trained and professional. I actually really enjoyed all the courses, and absolutely loved the tuna nigiri. However, the reason for the lower-star was because I wasn't happy with the portion control. I selected the 10-piece omakase course which was the 2nd most expensive selection. I was not completely full by the end of the meal. To me, regardless of the cuisine, the price, the taste of each dish, the main reason I visit a restaurant ultimately is to fill my belly. Leaving the diners hungry with a predesigned course is just unacceptable. Hopefully, if I ever visit again, I will have a better experience.
Refined and heavenly omakase in the north loop warehouse district. Had to read the dining experiences and menu booking option several times to understand which days and which dining experiences were offered. Finally preselected the omakase Matsu experience which was a hefty price tag plus tax and service charge. Service was impeccable with friendly but still deference to the patrons. Chic minimalist modern decor throughout the two level dining space. Countless courses but some were small single bites. Our favorites were of course the flights of nigiri with fatty tuna, scallops, yellowtail, uni, and torched Wagyu. The finishing dessert course was a refreshing basil sorbet. Went on the 5:30pm dining option on Saturday and found plenty of street metered parking. Although there was valet available for a fee. Main door located on the side of the building. Used to be the original Origami Sushi restaurant back in the 90s.
The best omakase restaurant in Minnesota, you can't get a more authentic experience than this. This was my second time here for omakase, and I will say, I think I enjoyed the summer menu in August more than the winter in March. March had more unique dishes like baby eel and octopus but I enjoyed the nigiri selection more in August. Each time we opted for the Take sized course, it came with three smaller starters (sakisuke and chawanmushi), ten pieces of nigiri and a miso soup and dessert to end. The Ume for us would not be enough food for us and matsu would be too much food, so Take is the perfect option for those that don't want to be over stuffed. Each time we have gone, the otoro and chu toro were the most memorable and delicious. The skip jack nigiri was surprisingly sooo yummy on the august menu (2021) as well. Service is always superb, the staff is very friendly and we did the chefs counter so we had some fun conversations with the chef as well. However, the second time we went the person that served the drinks was a little pushy with the sake my FIL ordered. He asked for a cup of sake and ended up recommending him the bottle. We were a little disappointed in the basil gelato the second time around, seemed very icey and not as good anymore but it was refreshing at least. Overall, I will always be curious to go back again if they change the menus every year because this is one of our favorite restaurants in MN. Great place for celebrating special occasions. The food was amazing! We lucked out with it being Puffer Fish season...definitely recommend trying the platter because it was so flavorful with their Ponzu! The chef's tasting menu is definitely the way to go and the more courses the better!! I was in Japan and introduced to horse mackerel and this restaurant took it to a whole other level!! Service was excellent as you would expect! Quiet and semi-private tables in the restaurant and a nice dark whiskey bar. Japanese whiskey selection was excellent and the staff recommendations based on comparable other whiskey were On Point! Would definitely recommend!
My husband surprised me with a belated birthday dinner. Belated because the reservation was booked far out, and when he wanted to book on my birthday, the next available date was not until a month later. My husband did the kaiseki furukawa experience for $160/person. It is a ten-course tasting menu. Their website offers cheaper options, starting at $60/person, but you will not be getting ten courses. You get what you pay for. When you arrive, the wait staff will offer an $80/person package where they will pair drinks with each course. Dress code: they do not have any specific requirements. My husband and I showed up in jeans and a very nice shirt. I saw a guest doing the same experience wearing a t-shirt and shorts while their daughter was wearing a crop top with sweatpants. Please note: there is a $100 service charge, but for the whole experience, that is fine. Their online reservation system may charge you this when you book your date, otherwise, you may be charged on the day of the dining experience. The staff was surprised to learn that the online reservation system added a service charge upon booking, but we had it sorted out. But this did not damper our experience. Just an FYI for future goers. When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a $10 valet. They accepted cash or card. There was a parking ramp, but I don't think it is open to the public. (There was the Federal Reserve Bank next to the restaurant.) When you enter the restaurant, a host/hostess will lead you to where you need to go, which for this experience was upstairs. The experience was intimate. It was two other families and us as we all sat at the bar and watch the chef with two sou-chefs prepare our meal. Overall, the environment was relaxing. Every staff member was professional, friendly, and approachable. I would say it is worth the price. I love sashimi, but you can tell this was fresh. The blue tuna sashimi was tender. The wasabi was also fresh because it wasn't crazy spicy. I would like to come back here again.
3-Star Michelin Vibes -- Without the Flight to Tokyo! Having dined at Jiro in Tokyo, I can confidently say this spot rivals that world-class experience -- with a warmer touch and a staff that speaks perfect English! From the moment we arrived, the valet parking made everything easy (though I recommend taking an Uber if you're doing the wine pairing... you'll definitely want to savor every sip). We went for the Matsu omakase, and wow -- every course was a work of art. The freshly grated wasabi, the thoughtful pacing, and watching each dish come to life at the sushi bar turned dinner into a full sensory experience. Chef Shiga was an incredible host -- friendly, engaging, and clearly passionate about his craft. And to top it all off, we had the pleasure of meeting Owner-Chef Shigeyuki Furukawa at the end of our meal -- such a gracious and humble culinary genius! My wife and I left absolutely blown away and already planning our next visit. Perfect for a date night, a special celebration, or simply treating yourself to something unforgettable. Wow. Just. Wow. I don't know if I can articulate a review that appropriately sums up how impressed I was with our dining experience here. From the service, intimate setting, the food. THE FOOD. Everything was top notch and Kado more than deserved their James Beard nom and hopefully a win in the next year. Every single item was outstanding. Mr. Furukawa's 10-course kaiseki should be on everyone's bucket list. 11/12/24 was my third kaiseki visit, and since the menu is seasonal, every time has been different. I recommend making a reservation as this experience is only held on Tuesdays at 5:30pm and 8:30pm. One thing to understand about this kaiseki is that it's not just sushi. You get treated to multiple courses, each with a different focus (for example, there was a steamed course and a vinegar course). Every course shows off how much of a master Mr. Furukawa is at flavor and texture. I love how friendly and open the staff are, even when it comes to explaining how best to enjoy each course (ie how to eat it). I love to watch each course plated in front of the counter, and they make sure that everyone has a good view. The food is presently very aesthetically, and the dinnerware itself is beautiful. All in all, this is a wonderful supper to have. I recommend reserving the later time so you have plenty of time to enjoy yourself. Parking: metered on-street, they also offer valet, or use any of the nearby parking ramps/lots Accessibility: I love that they include a section in the reservation service to put down notes like if you need space for a wheelchair, have allergies, etc. They have an elevator to take you to the upper floor. However, the second time we went the person that served the drinks was a little pushy with the sake my FIL ordered. He asked for a cup of sake and ended up recommending him the bottle. We were a little disappointed in the basil gelato the second time around, seemed very icey and not as good anymore but it was refreshing at least. The food was amazing! We lucked out with it being Puffer Fish season...definitely recommend trying the platter because it was so flavorful with their Ponzu! The chef's tasting menu is definitely the way to go and the more courses the better!! I was in Japan and introduced to horse mackerel and this restaurant took it to a whole other level!! Service was excellent as you would expect! Quiet and semi-private tables in the restaurant and a nice dark whiskey bar. My husband surprised me with a belated birthday dinner. Belated because the reservation was booked far out, and when he wanted to book on my birthday, the next available date was not until a month later. My husband did the kaiseki furukawa experience for $160/person. It is a ten-course tasting menu. Their website offers cheaper options, starting at $60/person, but you will not be getting ten courses. You get what you pay for. When you arrive, the wait staff will offer an $80/person package where they will pair drinks with each course. Dress code: they do not have any specific requirements. My husband and I showed up in jeans and a very nice shirt. I saw a guest doing the same experience wearing a t-shirt and shorts while their daughter was wearing a crop top with sweatpants. Please note: there is a $100 service charge, but for the whole experience, that is fine. Their online reservation system may charge you this when you book your date, otherwise, you may be charged on the day of the dining experience. The staff was surprised to learn that the online reservation system added a service charge upon booking, but we had it sorted out. But this did not damper our experience. Just an FYI for future goers. When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a $10 valet. They accepted cash or card. There was a parking ramp, but I don't think it is open to the public. (There was the Federal Reserve Bank next to the restaurant.) When you enter the restaurant, a host/hostess will lead you to where you need to go, which for this experience was upstairs. The experience was intimate. It was two other families and us as we all sat at the bar and watch the chef with two sou-chefs prepare our meal. Overall, the environment was relaxing. Every staff member was professional, friendly, and approachable. I would say it is worth the price. I love sashimi, but you can tell this was fresh. The blue tuna sashimi was tender. The wasabi was also fresh because it wasn't crazy spicy. I would like to come back here again. read more
We visited Kado No Mise for an anniversary dinner. We made reservations for the 5:30 pm seating and chose to sit at a table. The space for Kado No Mise is small and intimate, but gives modern Japanese vibes. There is a lot of space between tables so even though the restaurant was full, we didn't feel crowded. The counter service looked interesting and it definitely something I would try in a future visit! We started our experience with cocktails which were both fantastic. I had the Kado Old Fashioned and would say it's one of the best old fashioneds I've ever had. The first few courses of the service were small bites, and a common theme we noticed was that they were a little flat. Almost all could have used either salt or some umami. The nigiri was where Kado No Mise shined. Every single bit was better than the last. The Tuna flight ranging from lean to fatty tuna was our favorite - the fatty tuna nigiri was the best bite of sushi I've ever had and one of the best bites of food I've ever had. The Take experience we ordered gives you 10 pieces of nigiri, but it was so good I could have eaten 1000. We finished with some maki (the pickle flavor overpowered the fish in my opinion, but it was good) and some shaved ice (the Thai basil was delicious). Overall it was a great experience and the nigiri really impressed us both! If I could just order the nigiri, I would be at Kado No Mise any time they had an open seat! read more

This was the first place my husband and I went during the pandemic in 2020 when the weather was getting warmer and restaurants were only doing outdoor seating with reservations. With so many great reviews, I was hoping for a much better food experience. All of the dishes were beautifully plated, and the service was great. We were underwhelmed by flavor and taste. We've visited Japan and had sushi from the east and west coasts, so part of the problem, I already know, is there is no comparison when you've eaten sashimi or sushi straight from the fish market in Japan. So yeah, we're food snobs. This is a good spot for MN I suppose... I'd like to maybe try their omakase sometime, but I'm not rushing back. read more

We tried the Kaiseki Furukawa and it was amazing! Quite pricy but it was worth it for a very special celebration. It was a delicious 10 course meal and we got the drink pairing with it, which came with about 7 small drinks total. The staff was super knowledgeable about all the drinks and explained where each of them came from. The chefs also made everything right in front of you! They're super talented and the 10 person seating for the meal was very intimate. They rotate the menu every month so I'd love to go back for another celebration! read more
a completely new kind of dining experience at @kadonomise even on the walk up the stairs from @sanjusanrestaurant you can tell you're about to enter a completely new atmosphere. the speedy & orchestrated service is noticeable the second you enter the door. with 3-4 new servers coming and going between each dish, it was so interesting to hear the intricacies & development of each plate. the prefixed dishes were unlike anything I've ever tasted or ordered. while I didn't find the first two the most preferable, every plate after exceeded expectations. the sashimi was just something else. the underlying notes of wasabi gave this incredible (& tolerable) kick I couldn't have imagined. the portion sizes seem small but ultimately serve to satisfy vs. overfill you; this philosophy in itself made me reevaluate what a "good" meal means. the makinomo & misoshuru had to be my second favorite. i don't typically love seaweed wrappings but these went down sooo smoothly & there was so much substance to each bite. all-in-all, the experience itself was worth the splurge (even w/ choosing the cheapest experience) & some of these outstanding plates were game changers. highly recommend! read more

Kado No Mise is one of my top favorite restaurants in the Twin Cities. Chef Furukawa and his team are bringing genuine, authentic, and high level Japanese food to the Twin Cities. I first tried them out during the Summer of 2020, when they were doing the limited time $80 Shokado Bento for takeout. The Bento was definitely worth its price as it came with so many aspects of food (check picture). Everything was delicious, high quality, and you know it took skill to make every little thing. So delicious, that I even bought it a second time a week later. I've recently gotten their regular take out menu: Sakana Kama Bento (a fish collar bento; it comes with delicious sides, miso, and rice) and 2 toro/fatty tuna nigiri. Again, delicious as usual. Everything again you can tell is done with great skill. One of the main reasons why I'm not stopping by as much as I would like to is the prices. It definitely is more on the expensive side. However, you get what you pay for: skillfully prepared and high quality food. They also recently reopened their Kaiseku Furukawa concept, located in the same building I believe, focusing on course/chef tasting style dining. read more
Came in for a reservation at 6pm on a Friday as a group of 4. Went for the $105 Take omakase (2nd option out of 3). All around wonderful experience. Drinks were great as well. The staff were so knowledgeable and loved being part of the experience with you when sharing about each dish. I appreciate the detail and techniques that went into creating the different dishes. The flavors were simple yet amazing -- I've never tasted eggplant like this before but it's simply braised in dashi stock but it comes out so delicious. The quality of the fish for nigiri was also great but that was expected. Loved brushing the sauce on top of each one with the bamboo brush as well. It didn't seem like much food at first but we all left very full at the end. Probably dined for 2.5 hours. I would love to come back to try something new next time! You're really paying for the whole experience and story behind each dish more so than the quantity of food. Not sure I would come back for the same menu twice at this price point but definitely worth checking out at least once! This was an amazing experience! A few of my friends had gone in the past and I was disappointed I couldn't join them at the time. So when my adventurous eating, experienced travelling friend mentioned she wanted to go I invited myself along too! Since my friend had actually been to Japan it was fun to hear her talk about her trip and her experiences with the rice and wasabi! Even better, two of the other diners in our group spoke fluent Japanese! It was fantastic to hear them converse with the chef in his native tongue! Even better was the care and attention the chef gave to all of us. Explaining the dishes ingredients, answering questions for us about the presentation or preparation. Not only could you see that attention to detail in the dishes themselves you could feel it in the explanations and information the entire staff shared with each course! The entire staff was lovely and took wonderful care of us! Very attentive and helpful yet not intrusive. Being a Midwestern native I was excited for exotic tastes and ingredients! I was not prepared to get full so quickly. By the seventh of ten courses I was slowing down and not sure I'd be able to finish, but everything was so delicious I couldn't stop eating! My favorite courses of this Spring inspired menu were the sashimi and the desserts. But honestly they were all amazing! It was quite a bit more salty than I realized. I had a chance to enjoy these colorful pretty onigiri set and a scrumptious gyoza for spring. I used to love this place so so much! We went there multiple times before the pandemic and got take out from there at least 10 times during the pandemic. Their fish was so fresh, the sushi rice was amazing, they had very traditional maki rolls, and their service was incredible. Really a bummer they're only doing omakase now. Haven't been back since and unfortunately won't be back if they don't bring back their menu. Really such a shame because this was by far my favorite restaurant in the twin cities. I'm sure the fish is still fresh and that the service is still great. read more
Exquisite atmosphere with great food. We had the Matsu menu, which was $145 per person because of the nigiri, and that was definitely the highlight because the fish and the wagyu were fresh and tender. Some other dishes like the chawanmushi, I have had better ones for much cheaper prices in China. Therefore I will say that the price vs. quality imbalance is still quite there, even if Japanese food is in general expensive here in the United States. It is an excellent place for a one-time experience, but that was about it for me. read more
My husband and I treated ourselves to the omakase since we'd never tried it before. We got the Omakase Ume. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous. And the customer service is nothing like I've ever experienced! Every detail has a purpose in Japan, and I love it. I loved them describing each course they brought out each time. I loved them all but my favorite was the chawanmushi!! I will be honest though and say that it was not enough food for me....let alone my 6' tall husband So unfortunately we did have to go elsewhere to have a second dinner ahhaha It was however worth the experience! read more

Fantastic Omakase experience. We made a reservation a few weeks in advance and got a seat at the counter. The restaurant was quiet and beautiful. The service was attentive but not intrusive. Every piece of food served was perfectly seasoned and thoughtfully prepared, and the entire menu came together very well. The chef told us some of the fish straight came from Japan that morning. He spent time sharing thoughtful anecdotes/facts with us throughout the meal but also gave us time to just enjoy the food. Will definitely be back next time there's something to celebrate! read more

Yes. At the end of your nigiri 🍣 section, you can add on as many of your favorite nigiris. I always do the largest course omakase and am satisfied after the 10 nigiri course but always like to add 2-3 of my favorites!
Is there uni available on the menu or is it only available through omakase?
There is a dish that has uni on regular menu. Comes in a little bowl with sushi rice and uni on top
