I had a pretty upsetting experience at this donation center. The needle wasnt placed in my vein far enough, which caused fluid to build up in my arm--this is extremely far from the main underlying issue, i tried to get help by calling out verbally and raising my hand like i was instructed to do, but no one responded as they were clearly short staffed and there wasn't a tech in my section to monitor donors for quite sometime. i feel as if there was some negligence leaving patients un supervised with no assistance. There were no forceps available to clamp the line myself preventing free fluid to infiltrate my arm, so I had to choose between pulling the needle myself or letting my arm balloon up with 300-400 ml of fluid and blood left over towards the end of the donation. I didn't want to pull the needle, but I had no other option. next is the real issue of the matter.
The nurse looked panicked and ended up shifting the blame to me for what happened. trying to scapegoat, she then banned me from donating permanently again in the future. Her explanations kept changing everytime i tried to get a clear precise answer--first she said I pulled the needle, then claimed I acted inappropriately (I stayed calm the whole time and reassured her i wasnt injured. I work in healthcare myself, so I am very understanding that mistakes happen and i tried not to make a big deal of it. That's not the issue. What bothered me was the lack of accountability, empathy, and follow-up from the facility. the next call wasn't a follow up like we are required to do in the hospital, for certain infiltrations, just a call with an attitude to tell me i was banned.
The lab techs were all great--friendly and professional. But when I called twice to ask for more info, the nurse answered with a bad attitude and refused to explain anything again with no clear reasoning. Someone on my third call was more polite and said a manager would reach out, but I never heard back from any managers.
Donating plasma is a great cause, and I absolutely encourage people to keep doing it--i would just recommend choosing another location/facility or company. Based on how things were handled, I doubt the incident report reflects any accurate understandings of the facts of the situation as there was multiple attempts to reach someone's attention before the incident, but no one was close to see or hear, and again afterwards there was continued blame shifting onto the patient. read more
