Rude and impatient staff that provide misleading advice and sell harmful products. We are now living with permanently ruined antique doors, health side effects and a space we cannot occupy for at least two weeks. My first exchange asking for information on paint was met with rudness and lack of willingness to actually offer information on the products - directing me to read about them instead. I thought maybe its just one employee. My second stab at this information resulted in misleading AND rude responses by the same employee after I read through all the provided information. Fot example, when I inquired into paint suitable for a shower ceiling, I was told all such products quickly fail and hence are not carried. Tile must be used at all times on all shower ceilings. Having done a good bit of digging, I found this to be untrue. I gave up on their paint but our incredibly patient, intelligent, caring and careful handyman worked with Peter to identify an appropriate wood product. Having asked for a non-toxic clear finish option for our antique doors and having inquired into color impact upon application of the recommended product, we were told oil number 9 is our best option. This incredibly foul smelling product (an overpowering aroma of rotting fish) completely changed our pale pine-like doors (likely cedar) to a deep orange almond color, which clashes with our tile, wall color, wood ceiling and all furniture purchased and installed over the last few months. As if this was not bad enough, within a half hour of exposure to treated doors, I became violently ill. When I returned to the space the following day, I was once again very ill after only 10 minutes. It will be weeks before I can occupy our space again. Turns out the oil has VOC and other harmful ingredients that are known to cause side effects and are slow to dry. When I called, I was told my handyman did not ask enough questions and the product 'worked exactly as intended.' Despite all that happened, I politely asked that their warnings be made more clear to future consumers but was told they are clear, it was my handyman and I that failed in obtaining adequate information. read more

We used Bioshield paints in our bedroom and both our painter and I were very happy with the results. Then, we decided to paint our hallway. We ordered more paint, this time we chose a different shade of white that is listed on their website. We began painting today and noticed the white was really a light salmon - it looked nothing like it does on the website. So - we called Bioshield -- and were immediately belittled and berated by a guy who turned out to be the be the owner (!!). We've spent close to $400 on paint from Bioshield and were told we couldn't get a refund for the unused paint - AND - they assumed zero responsibility for the tint of the paint. Apparently, somewhere on the website is a disclaimer to not trust the tints on the website when choosing paint. I know, it makes no sense when I type it either. So, if you order white and they send you green, tough luck, because they don't do refunds. It's almost shocking to receive such terrible and abusive treatment in this day and age. Businesses seem to bend over backwards not to receive bad reviews on social media, but Bioshield DOESN'T CARE AT ALL how they come off to customers. We were going to spend thousands with them to finish our house because we really loved the product, but we cannot support a business that treats its customers like garbage and assumes everyone is out to scam them. I would stay away from Bioshield at all costs, and check out other clay paint manufacturers that actually care about their customers. read more

Very difficult to work with. Can't touch up at all. Not worth $5.

*Update* It has been two weeks since I put one coat of the Bioshield clay based paint on the walls. I still can't be in the room without my nose and eyes burning. I have purchased three gallons of the Bioshield clay based paint. Two in October 2018 and one in May 2019. The first two were ordered at the same time and while I had a problem with a strong smell I talked to the company and worked through it. I decided to give the paint another try when it was time to paint our guest bedroom/office. This time I ordered one gallon.The room is about ten by eleven, one wall is mostly closet and another wall has a window so there isn't all that much wall space. First, when opened I saw that there was an orange streak in the paint. I contacted the company and was told that it was tinting that didn't get fully mixed just stir and it should be fine. I stirred, a lot then finally moved on to painting. There was a smell, clay which you expect, but something sharp too like a strong vinegar or alcohol smell. More stubborn than sensible I kept going. After all of the paint was applied (one coat to three walls) I was not feeling great. When my husband came home he said he could smell 'something' sharp as soon as he come through the laundry room. I told him about painting my office, he opened the door and closed it immediately. I had the window open and a fan going but the odor had definitely multiplied. That was Friday afternoon. It is now Monday afternoon. After three full days in warm Arizona weather, an open window and two fans going the smell is still intense. It burns the inside of my nose and stings my eyes. The walls feel dry and all painting tools were taken outside right after I painted. I don't know what is causing the smell. The company advertises that there are no harsh chemicals in the paint but it definitely has a chemical smell in that room. I am concerned about the situation. In trying to improve my living space by purchasing 'natural' paint I have made the situation much, much worse. I tried to contact the business this morning. I asked to talk to the same person I spoke with on Friday. The woman who answer red the phone was rude and unhelpful. At over $70 per gallon (price and shipping) I would have at least expected basic customer service. Now I have a room I can not enter. If the smell wears off at some point in the future we still need a 2nd coat on three walls and have one that is unpainted. It is a disaster. read more

I am so pleased that a store in New Mexico is the distributor for these eco-friendly German made products. The staff helped me chose a clay paint color and made sure I knew how to apply it. They are no-nonsense, but friendly. Maybe that is what is off-putting to some customers. A word about the clay paint - no special equipment is required. I applied it with a roller and found one coat was adequate on an already painted wall. I did need two coats on new drywall. CAUTION for chemically sensitive people - the paint had no odor when applying, but it did give me problems for over a month after. It does contain a minute amount of chemical preservative, but I think it may have been the alcohol. It was applied in wintertime, so I could not open a window. A fan helped a bit. read more

9 or so years ago I found Bioshield and purchased a non toxic varnish or sealer for the interior woodwork in my passive solar home. The product was excellent, as was the service. My home is a soulful, artistic, expressive, pioneering creation. I neglected it's needs due to financial constraints for 10 years. Just had an amazing stucco job on the exterior, and the same crew is renewing my cracked, aging beautiful interior Adobe! Yet the colors and shades of adobe are vastly different, which I am stressed & angry over still eager to remedy. I called my old friend the Mudman, a highly soulful Poet, Shaman & Renaissance Man who plays with Adobe as an outlet for helping self and others heal through connection with our living earth! I told him of my Adobe challenge. He suggested I call I called and spoke to Shannon who will send some clay based paint samples to me. Ahh, now I am really inspired. I believe this would be the most excellent solution and would honor the integrity of the living earth of my home. I am so excited I asked BioShield to send samples to my Contractor, Alvero at Blu Sky Plaster. They are an amazing team. For perfect painters, the perfect paint Several months ago I purchased several colors of Bioshield paint on the recommendation of a real estate agent whose opinion I respected. She vouched for the quality of the colors and the absence of any toxicity in the paint. I purchased four custom colors and the basic white in quantities I considered sufficient to cover my walls. I applied initial coats of each paint to the respective rooms and found areas on the following day, as I usually do whenever I paint, where the paint job needed to be touched up. In every room except the one in which I did no touch up, the touch ups dried to a shade lighter than that of the underlying coat, creating splotches. In other words, the entire paint job of the room was marred. The only room where I did not have this issue was the one in which I did no touching up at all. I brought this issue to the attention of the vendor, Rudolph, the creator of this clay-based paint, and sent photos of my results. I asked for a refund for two of the three custom paints. This is how he responded: "Just in general, applying a coat of paint and touching the missed spots up is not really something that we recommend in any of our literature. As a matter of fact I find this to be bad painting practice. We recommend two coats of paint and NOT one coat with later touch-up. With touch-up you change the light reflection of the paint coat and therefore get the results that you are showing in your photo." He refused to refund my payment for the paint, laying the blame for my results on my painting technique. I used to work as a painter and never experienced a problem with touching up except with the most inferior paint, which my employers didn't use precisely because of the additional costs of painting over an initial coat. We touched up regularly; the second coat regularly dried to the tint of the first application unless the painting application was really poor. If you think touch ups should be addressed with an entire second coat of paint, then by all means buy Bioshield paint and pay the very high prices Bioshield charges. You clearly are a superior painter and require only the very best paint at the very highest prices. If you have any issues with the paint, think twice about requesting a refund or credit; know in advance that the problem with your results already lies with you. Ask for the warranty for the paint if you like when you're purchasing it, just to hear the sweet words. They're elegant, and they even sound sincere. I give two stars rather than one because the colors really are extraordinary, just to be fair. If you'd rather skip the rest of the superior Bioshield painting experience, however, go instead for Benjamin Moore's Natura Zero VOC paint, which is less expensive, covers beautifully, gives off almost no odor and touches up without a hitch. I have worked with Bioshield for years. I am a Builder in California, and we have used their products extensively. We have had consistent success with the paints, stains, and all forms of the penetrating oil and sealer waxes. I appreciate having such a varied and plentiful stock of sustainable finishing options. Please look at some of the work we've used their products; including the most pointed LEED Platinum home in the Nation in 2004 (Fonstad Residence). I will mention that we have had shipping issues, but they were generally a request on our end that was most likely unreasonable without paying extensive shipping amounts. Remember, calling direct to a wholesaler is a great option, but they are busy. They have to service thier retail outlets and the call in customers. Let the products speak for themselves. Ill take a day or two late over having to use toxic, petroleum products from the larger construction supply yards any day. I called Bioshield to ask a simple question: What is the "preservative" at the end of their ingredients in their clay paint? I think that a company that prides themselves on natural ingredients should not be ashamed to tell what that "preservative" is, but I spoke to the owner and she was so, so rude to me. She said that she couldn't tell me because they change that ingredient all the time. I proceeded to ask her if she was the one who made the paints. She said yes. If she is the one who creates the paints, it seems like she should know the recipe--LOL! She then asked me, "Is there any other company that you can call up and ask what the ingredients in their paint are?" She said that very rudely. I asked her if she could send me a list of what the "preservative" could be. Her response was, "I am SO busy, I cannot do that. I am just SO BUSY. I would have NO time for that." So, in short, she couldn't (wouldn't) answer my question. Of course she knows what is in the paint; she makes it. Even if she didn't want to tell me what was in it she could have treated me with respect like I treated her with respect. She really needs learn how to treat potential customers. If you are considering purchasing a product from Bioshield, I would highly recommend that you call up the owner and speak to her and see if you still want to support the company! Bioshield, if you ever read this review I hope that you will consider treating future customers with kindness and revising your ingredients so that they are not something you have to be ashamed to tell to your customers about. read more

I am very disappointed with this company and the customer service. First I had ordered samples and some of the colors were wrong. They told me those were old batches from Germany and the newer ones would be more accurate and sent those. After picking the colors, I ordered several gallons of paint and we painted most of our apartment, but the amount they quoted me was off. Not a huge deal. I called back to order more and the owner of the company answered the phone. I wanted to order an extra gallon so I could finish painting. She said she would ship it that day (Thursday) and that it would most likely arrive Monday or Tuesday. It then ended up shipping on Tuesday! My place is a mess, because I'm waiting to finish painting, plus I had moved around my schedule to plan on painting all day Wednesday. On that same phone call, I had questions because her associate and herself both gave me completely different directions on applying glaze to the paint in my bathroom. One of them said to mix it in with the paint and the other one told me to apply it afterwards. She had rushed me off the phone because she needed to take another call and was kind of rude about it, so I just kind of let it go. But after the shipping failure, I decided to call and let her know that I was disappointment and I just wanted to let her know. I am the most calm and laid back person on the phone and she completely blew up at me. She got defensive, immediately threatened to turn around the order (really?) and proceeded to tell me off. I was blown away by this and simply told her to watch for my reviews. I'm still in shock that I was treated like this from a company owner. Oh, by the way... the product is just ok, but it gets dirty very easily and you can't really wash it. I like the color but the paint is clearly of low quality. The person who initially recommended it was talking about American Clay, but I accidentally ended up finding Bioshield. Oops! read more

I have been purchasing this paint for several years. In summary: _________ If I was rating the quality of the paint I would give it 5 stars. Excellent products! I have used clay and solvent-free, both in matte and satin finishes. The satin is the most washable of all of them and works great in my kitchen with no backsplash. I have used a glaze over both clay and solvent free. I have never had an odor problem, love the colors and the "feel" that it gives a room. I count on a gallon of paint only going 150 square feet and have not run out with that calculation. A note about the product: treat it like a living thing. If it gets contaminated or old, it will sour. Buy enough for what you need and a little for touch-ups. Keep the original bucket clean (no dipping unless you are using it all on that job). ____________ If I had to rate the customer service I would give them 1 star. Every time I have spoken to the woman (the owner I presume?) I have gotten the same defensive attitude that the other reviewer on here felt. Like I am being an inconvenience to them. The man however has been super helpful and accommodating. Some problems that I have had that resulted in me calling them were: 1) we ordered paint for an office, and ran out on the last bit of wall as I under-estimated the amount needed (this was my first order placed and didn't know how thick the paint would be). So I ordered more. That second batch was mixed with a different base so the result was a different color. I was treated rudely on the phone and although they offered to replace the gallon of paint, they were going to charge me shipping. I instead repainted the whole room with the new paint in order to match the walls to each other. 2) The color swatches are in matte. When you order the paint in satin, the color looks different. I ordered one of the green shades in satin, put it on the wall, and it looked blue. When I called I was treated like I was stupid for not knowing this. She admitted the color swatches will show a different tone and said they don't make enough money to make swatches in both satin and matte. This is not my problem. I ended up ordering the matte version as we didn't want a blue wall (the rest of the room was shades of green already) and a glaze to put over it, but I did not receive a discount, no break, and was treated rudely. I think the business would be better if the phone was answered by people who have customer service skills. I keep buying from them because I love the product ( I use their green home cleaning products and the wood protectants too). I am going to be on a Green Home tour and I need to be honest with people about it when they ask about the products. My most recent order the man called me due to an adjustment that would need to happen...he was very nice, explained things in a reasonable way, and I was very happy with the adjustment and how I was treated. read more

We are very lucky to have these natural products. They all work. It is a bit different than using regular paints and waxes and varnishes. There is a learning curve to work with some of them but it's well worth it. I applied the bees wax finish over my painted walls and I feel like I'm in a cozy hive. The natural smell of the bees wax comforts and enhances my space. The beeswax or hard oil finishes also protect against wear on painted surfaces. I heartedly recommend these products. I purchased two buckets of clay based paint from Bioshield last summer (August, 2011) and used it in July this year. The paint did not smell too bad, but there was definitely a smell to it. We thought the smell would be gone in a week or two after using it in a small room, with a fan on and window left open. Boy, after 7 weeks and counting, the smell is as strong as the day it was painted (it can give you a headache). Emailed and called the company 2 weeks after painting, and no email reply, but did get to speak to a lady on the phone. Explanations provided: 1) The paint might have expired since it expires after 1 year from shipping (though this information was never provided during ordering or on the product); 2) That the paint might have been reacting with previous paint on the wall, creating nasty chemical smell.... The Drywall was painted typical white before we moved in 3 years ago and it was most likely from since the house was built 20 years ago. If 2) is true, no precaution of this sort was provided on the web or the product either... Left another message on the company voicemail about 2 weeks ago and no return phone call... It has been very frustrating since we cannot use the room. It definitely has back fired on us as I searched high and low for zero VOC paint for a long time before deciding on this product. It would have been wiser to go with the bigger brand low-VOC paint sold in Homedepot or Lowes... Thought I would share this information so other people do not go through similar headache. read more
