My wife and I used to see a lot of shows at the Birchmere, but we stopped going unless there is an artist that is not playing at any other local venue. The reason for this is that, besides the long drive, there is not reserved seating so it's just too much of a time investment if you do want a great seat. To get a really good seat you have to get there at 5:00 when the box office opens, to get a low number. Then, you have to wait around for an hour until they open the hall and let people in, in order by the number you got from the box office. Then, you have to wait another hour and a half before the show starts. Granted, if you want to eat dinner there, you need time. But, if you just want to see the show, you're out of luck. We just got sick of the fact that they want you have to hang around so they can turn you upside down and shake every penny out of your pockets! We prefer Blues Alley in DC, or the Rams Head in Annapolis. Blues Alley also does not offer reserved seating, but you can get there early and get a great seat. Or, if not, it is small enough that just about any seat is good. The Rams Head offers reserved seating (tables) which is perfect. Many of the same artists that come to the Birchmere also perform at the Rams Head. They also serve food and drinks, and there is very convenient parking across the street. If you don't want to eat there, there are a few good restaurants a few doors down. And, Annapolis is not as far as you think. In summary, there are much better venues around. read more

We've been to the Birchmere several times and each time the show has been fantastic. The artists typically come out to sign autographs after the show. The venue is small and intimate and the sound has been decent. I won't say every seat in the house is great, but the majority are very good. They bring in quite the variety of acts and have live entertainment nightly. Seating is first come, first served so expect to arrive early. You'll receive a number when you pick up your tickets at will call and that is how you will actually be called to enter the theater. Once you have your tickets, you're allowed into the bar area - drinks (to include full bar) and appetizers are available for purchase. When the doors to the theater are opened, you enter when your number is called and select your seats. If you sit at one of the picnic tables up front, expect to sit with others. The food looks to be somewhat mediocre and pricey for what it is. The servers are very busy getting out everyone's food/drinks so service can be slow depending on where you sit. We usually grab dinner early at one of the nearby restaurants and order a drink at the bar area just before entering the theater. Better food, no long wait. read more

Review is just about the food. It has gone downhill. Sometime in the past, I ordered a Cuban sandwich here. It was delicious. I ordered the same thing two nights ago and what a disappointment. First sandwich was cooked perfectly so that the ham, cheese and bread melted together exquisitely. Check the calendar often to see non-mainstream bands because if they're ever in the area, it's a sure bet that they're making a stop at the Birchmere (or Rams Head in Annapolis or Baltimore). I saw Rachael Yamagata and Mandy Moore here and I was not disappointed. Seating is sort of by first-come first-serve. When you pick up your tickets at the counter, you're given a number by which you're seated. So make sure your entire party is together when you get your number. The food is alright - a little bit on the salty side - but what can you expect from a place that's preparing food for hundreds of people within a 1-2 hr. time frame? Parking is easy if you come at a decent time. They have a pretty big private lot. read more

The short and sweet: Live music is AWESOME. If you don't mind spending the majority of your afternoon here to see a 7:30PM show, then the venue won't seem so bad either! My boyfriend and I went to see Eric Roberson on a Saturday night at the end of May. I'm so glad I read the Yelp reviews before we went, because they helped me to know what to expect. The ticketing and seating process did run smoothly, but they really need to get a better system, because it really is a WASTE OF TIME. The process is described in depth within alot of the reviews so I won't go into it. The show started at 7:30, however we were hanging out at a venue with over two hours before showtime just to ensure we get good seats. Since I read the reviews, we ate before we got there, and just ordered soft drinks and water at the table. I needed to keep my throat from getting dry from singing and screaming the whole time! lol. However, our tab was just $5. You don't have to purchase anything, however there is a full-menu and bar menu available-- no table minimum! That's awesome. So if you don't plan to eat, be prepared to chit chat and people watch with whomever you came with for a good two hours. We were able to scoop out a two-person table on the side by the stage, so we had GREAT seats. I definitely enjoyed the live music performance, the accoustics were great and that really is the only thing that would bring me back. read more

I've come here a few times to catch live music. They offer only general admission so you should arrive NLT 5 PM to get line numbers for seating. The bar opens at that time too. It's a full bar with typical NoVA prices. I don't recall ever seeing happy hour prices. Seating begins at 6 PM, same time as the restaurant opens. Honestly, you don't come here for the food. I'd recommend eating an early dinner in nearby Crystal City or Pentagon City. Now having written that I have had a couple of items from the menu. Nothing great in terms of taste, but the service was adequate. Never had a problem with the wait staff. Some seats are better than others because you are sitting at tables with chairs not facing the stage. That's why you ought to arrive early to get the better facing seats. Couples probably don't want to sit across from each other but rather next to each other. Groups get no special treatment so if you are managing one you will really have to work seating aggressively. The shows I've attended didn't offer a dance floor, but I know the venue will put out a dance floor for some shows. Obviously this is at the cost of seats. Parking is free and plentiful if you arrive early enough. I would imagine the lot gets full for sold out events. Definitely recommend. read more

Get your beer. Try to get seat only to find that entire tables are being held by two people "waiting" for their friends to arrive. My brother-in-law-to-be, Jake Armerding (jakearmerding.com, shameless little plug here) opened for Eddie From Ohio tonight and is playing with them for their annual 3 night stint here at the Birchmere. This was my first time going, and I hope to be back for more shows. I guess it is kind of a classic around these parts (although...my fiance has lived in DC for 6 years and had never heard of it before his brother was booked there - perhaps it is more of NoVa notoriety?) The bigger shows are in the (obviously...) bigger room in the back - lots of seating available at tables for dinner and drink service. I think smaller performances can utilize the stage area right at the entrance. If you come for a show and want a dinner, I'd think twice about ordering any food. It is pretty awful. The lemon herb chicken entree, that I had, was $17. Mashed potatoes tasted like they came from out of a box, the veggies on the size were like rubber, and the chicken was MUSHY. This place is second only to Iota in my book. I saw Bob Schnedier here over the Winter and it was my first time at the venue. It was AWESOME. It's incredibly spacious inside and very easy to find a good seat. I can't remember much about the food other than I was impressed (I'm sorry Birchmere, I was a little wary in my food expectations before our first date). I went with my fiance and remembered thinking to myself (mid-performance), "This is just as awesome as Irving Plaza in NYC, if not slightly better because I don't have to walk either for the beer or food!" I know ... damn pangs of laziness. It's a miracle I don't weight 300 lbs. with all of the food I eat ... but I digress ... The venue is incredibly rockin' and very relaxed. It gives you that small and intimate feeling all the while being big enough that you don't have to worry about spilled drinks on your dress or Mr. Big Head standing directly in front of you. From where we were sitting, I could see it all and I felt like it was one of the BEST concerts I've been to since living in the region (going on 4 years now). The Birchmere is home to some of the hardest working bands, crews, waiters, box office staff, booking agents, and kitchen staff around. Please remember that in one evening approximately 500 people are seated, served and ready for show time in minutes, (if your waiter isn't there the moment you sit down, the shows don't start until 7:30, and even then food is served for a little while during the show, you will eat!) Gary, Ralph and Jimmy have worked very hard to bring in the best acts, with the most efficient service. Although the bands don't always choose the best place to showcase their music, they decide whether they play in the music hall (sit down) or bandstand (dancing), so if you have a preference let your favorite bands know! We had a great time at the Birchmere last night. The performances were great and we enjoyed the small intimate space. The artist interaction with the crowd was fun to be a part of. Parking was easy. The employees were friendly and helpful. The food was pretty good. My wife loved the catfish, red beans and rice. The pizza I had was just okay but the rest of the experience made up for it. I order the quesadilla or some kind of pizza when I'm here and I've always thought it was at least good enough. You shouldn't be focusing on food anyway. This isn't a restaurant, it's a musical venue. 2) It's "intimate" in that it's not a stadium, but it ain't that cozy, either. It's a huge hall. But still try to get there early, anyway, because seating is first come, first served. 3) I don't know much about the alcohol situation... I'm not a big drinker, but my pinot noir didn't taste right. 4) Everything on the menu is over-priced. But oh well, it's still cheaper than $10 for a medium popcorn at the movies. This venue may be much on the eyes, but brings some of the best roots/country/folk/acoustic/blues music to DC. Just have a look at the posters around the main performance space; Ray Charles, Jenny Lewis, that lady from the ipod commercial. You can buy tickets at the box office here with a $3 per ticket surcharge and avoid getting raped by ticketmaster. The sound is always great. If it is important to you to be front and center, note that it is always general admission, so it doesn't hurt to get there early. I've gotten good seats in the second section back without a numbered ticket (willy wonka?!) and even sat 15 feet from the stage getting there 20 minutes before a show last Saturday. Others have complained that you can't dance/return energy to the artists. I would say this venue is great for low key musicians, and intimate performances. The energy level can vary greatly, as others have mentioned. NO dancing, a$$ shaking or other extracurricular activities in front of the stage. Bonus...free, live, CCTV feed of the artists performing to the bar outside the ticketed performance venue, but in the building. No tickets needed as far as I know. There are sometimes performances out here too. You can get your groove on out here, though you might just be by yourself. Nothing like karaoke dancing! read more

I visited the Birchmere for the first time last night to see the David Bromberg Big Band and thoroughly enjoyed myself. At first glance the ambiance of the building is an olde style saloon and dance hall, featuring a bar and seating area while you wait for the musical halls doors to open. Arrive early enough to enter the building as soon as the doors open, you are then given a number at the Box Office which dictates the order in which you enter the music hall. (the better the number you have the earlier you enter the music hall thus gaining a better table. Unlike an usual venue this place is more like a dinner theatre. You are allowed ample amount of time after being seated in the music hall to order an eat your entrees before the opening act starts. My only real criticism of this place are the food prices, the cuisine is above average but not justifiable of the price, especially since its served on plastic plates... Regardless there is a wide variety of beer and full bar, as well as a tremendous menu in itself. The extremely intiment setting of the music hall is what is the main attraction of this venue. There truly isn't a bad seat in the house, the only downside being if you are sat with your back to the stage you have to turn around in your seat in what is a very cramped seating area. All in all I would highly recommend this place if any of your favorite underground acts are happening through, bring some friends and go have a good time at the Birchmere read more

Being me first time going here I was very excited first because of the performer "Jon B" and second was for the atmosphere of the venue. I hand heard about it many times through friends, so I was ready for my chance to get the experience. So just a note for everyone they sell tickets online. Keep in mind just because you buy one does not mean your table or seat is reserved unless stated.The box office opens at 5:30pm and you pick your tickets up from there and get your table number. If you are later then 30 mins to get your tickets for a sold out show expect a wait, table in back or sides, and parking will be slim. This was the case for me abc my group. This was crazy because my friend got there at almost 5:30 to get tickets and I guess because we had a large group it was still packed. Needless to say this wasn't too horrible for me. But the food was just subpar at best in my opinion for the price!! The menu states buffalo wings so in my past experience and now your wings should be sautéed in a signature buffalo sauce, not dry rubbed with sauce on the side. My mother got pretzel crab dip...but I saw no crab (laughs) and not did she. It was more of a nacho cheese sauce as well. So if you are expecting fine dining here it won't be happening it's mostly bar type foods and quality. First off, if you are a music lover and you enjoy more intimate settings rather than big concert halls to see your favoirte underground artist-this is the place for you! The food looks enticing; however, its always...off or flavorless and the drinks are watered down. Even if you eat beforehand your looking at a 2-3 hour show, so your going to want to munch on something or sip on something during the concert. The place is too crowded, the sound is pretty bad and the food is mediocre and overpriced. But the artist choices are pretty good. Seats are so close together you can barely eat. It's uncomfortable to be so close to strangers. Macy Gray encouraged us to dance but where I was, it was impossible to move the chairs and stand up let alone move. The chairs are really uncomfortable too, your behind and your back will be hurting by the end of the night. The sound is awful. I have been here twice and both times there was really bad echo and background static interfering with the sound. Specially the base, poor performer, we know it's not you! Service, like the food, is mediocre. We got the wrong dessert and the waitress never came back so we couldn't ask for what we ordered. Food portions are decent. read more

It's built to be somewhat saloon/carnival like with long dinner tables where you can eat and drink whilst enjoying the show. Outside the main stage area (which looks like it can fit between 500-700 people) there is a bar, pool tables and a smaller stage. The Birchmere is somewhat of an unusual place. They have a great schedule of concerts ranging from modern, lesser-known bands to some serious heavy hitters from past decades (coming up soon, for example, is the great classic rock band America). The tickets tend to be a little expensive but it's a really small, intimate venue that usually attracts a polite crowd. One of my favorite favorite bands, Gaelic Storm, usually does a two-night stint any time their tour takes them through the area, and Henry Rollins' spoken word tour often takes him through too, so those are the nights you'll find me there! The shows are seated unless the concert is advertised as being in the bandstand; I've personally never been to a bandstand show so I can't speak to it. There is dinner and drink service by a wait staff which is optional; no drink minimum or anything like that. Regarding the food - it is somewhat mediocre for the price, but they've got you there so I usually end up partaking. The menu has a pretty nice variety and as far as I know their alcohol selection is good (I'm not a big drinker). The seats are first come/first serve so if you go to dinner somewhere else first you might end up in the back of the seating area. That being said, it's a fairly small room so you can see the stage well from pretty much anywhere, but I like to be up front so I usually have dinner there. One thing that does bug me, however, is that they won't give you water - you can only buy bottles. This is a recent development and is kind of a pet peeve. On the upside, they do usually give free soda refills, so that's a win. Obviously I recommend checking out a concert at the Birchmere. It's a great venue which gets some fantastic acts. I've been here a few dozen times, and I really enjoy it. The concept of line numbers is so civilized and makes the whole 'entering the venue' experience so much better. I think I'm beyond the run to the front of the stage years. It is also very nice to be able to mingle in the lobby rather than standing outside in the elements. Food is merely average and rather expensive. Drinks are quite reasonable--they have several wines by the glass, more by the bottle, and a fairly decent bartending department. As for the venue itself--intimate! The tables are close enough that you can rest your feet on the very low stage, if you're in one of the up close seats. The mix can be overwhelming, but that varies by performer. Many artists sign in the lobby afterward, which is very nice! read more

If you're a passionate fan, and willing to wait in line before the doors open, it is very easy to see some of your favorite artists (for me, this would include Randy Newman, Guy Clark, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Dar Williams, and many other artists who play here) super close. In addition, the food and drink is fine, and the audience always amiable. You don't come here generally to get drunk, or rock out, but to listen to incredible music from your favorite artists, played with passion and humor. And whether you like Randy Newman or not, you need to make an effort to see him if he ever comes back again to play here. read more

There is not a bad seat in the house, but if you want to be close to the stage arrive early and enjoy hanging out in the open seating area with a drink from the bar. Sound system is great also. The Birchmere is delightful, safe, fun, pleasant, and a wonderful place for those of us who still enjoy live shows but aren't interested in the insanity of the huge venues. In fact? The Birchmere seems perfect for those of us who -- in our younger days -- ENJOYED those huge venues but, now, appreciate a seat, a lil' dinner, and age-appropriate peers who enjoy performers who sing, play, and perform OUR music. I've attended the Birchmere several times. I will continue to attend their concerts and performances, so long as it remains as friendly a venue to all, irrespective of age, gender, party size, attractiveness, or race. (In fact? I'm attending a concert alone next month; I'll see how they handle this single concertgoer.) Regarding the seating ceremony? All I can say is what the other reviewers say is true. I have always loved the Birchmere, and I've been going there since the 1980s, in their previous building. Great acoustics. Tight quarters, but intimate and fun. It's a great place to hear live music. HOWEVER, I'm nearly vegan. The menu, albiet more extensive than before, is pitiful for someone who doesn't eat meat, fish, or dairy. There's one item on the menu. A "veggie pasta" dish that consists of thinly sliced vegetables in a sauce of tomato paste with a lot of basil. $16.99. Pizza is on the menu so I asked if they had some non-dairy cheese back there, and of course they did not. Not even a veggie burger. Since you have to get there early to get a good seat, it's nice to have real food to eat. I'm willing to pay, but the pickin's were pitiful. Please add some vegan stuff so I can love going there again! I used to order the chips and salsa, and there was a nice sandwich I could order without cheese. read more

The food was great for this type of venue and at a good price point. I was in the DC area on business and had an invite to attend a show where Tab Benoit was performing. You'll definitely want to arrive early to get a good table. The menu is small and is nothing particular special, but it's decent enough for a pre-show meal. It has great acoustics, however, it is not the best of venues for faster-paced acts because there is no real space to dance around. I love Gaelic Storm, a great Celtic band that periodically plays at the Birchmere. When I see Gaelic Storm at other venues, people are always dancing and jumping and standing and moving about. If it was possible to give this establishment 1/2 a star I would. This was by far the worst customer service I've ever experienced. We arrived 45 min early for dinner before the show started but our waitress failed to put our order in but blamed it on the kitchen being backed up. We knew that was not the issue because two couple that came well after us had ordered and eaten while we sat there sipping on drinks. When asked to speak with the manger things got even worst . The management sided with the waiters and failed to even explore the possibility that the service was awful. The Birchmere is a classic. Although the location changed some time ago, the character is still (somewhat) the same. While the food is somewhat pricey for what it is, it is also pretty darned good for what it is. I'd have actually given them a five (which is rare for me 'cause it indicates that you simply cannot do any better!) were it not for the piss poor performance of the sound equipment at a recent performance of the Puppini Sisters, who had to frequently break out of their performance to curse the microphones that cut in and out from the first note, clear to the last. read more

I can't decide whether the Bandstand at the Birchmere or the 9:30 club is my absolute favorite rock concert venue. I saw George Thorogood there and it was a LOUD, rockin', elbow-to-elbow, hot, sweaty, beer drinkin' frenzy. Life doesn't get better than that if you're in the mood to rock. I have also seen many shows in the Hall but it seems to lack the in-your-face intimacy of the Bandstand; which is perfectly fine for other types of music, but when I want to see, hear and feel rock & roll, it's either the 9:30 Club or the Bandstand for me. read more

I love this place -- I just wish it was in DC. The Birchmere is like a country dance hall transplanted from Louisiana to Va. The acts seem to be mostly "down-home" oriented and there's not really a bad seat in the house. The unique thing about the Birchmere is they also serve food. People show up two hours before the show to get their "line ticket," a number that allows you to get into the hall based on how early you got there and snag a great table. But you can show up late and still be able to see, too. Before the show, they ask for food orders at every table. They serve mostly bar food, but none of it has been bad, other than the crab cake sandwich didn't do it for me. After you've had your food and beer, the show will start. Like I said, there's not really a bad seat here and the crowd is usually very sedate...sitting at their tables during the show instead of dancing. I love going to shows at the Birchmere, it's just a pain in the ass to get here from Dupont Circle without a car. You can take the metro to Kings St., but you still have to cab it to the club. read more

Been here before, but never considered yelping. Well, the parking is free, but it will take you a while to leave once the show is over. We saw Morris Day and The Time here last night. Mediocre acoustics; great show; good food. Our waiter was good, but overextended. We shared a "Half and Half," which is two meaty ribs, a quarter chicken with a fine sauce, great greans, and an excellent mac and cheese that makes me want to try their Lobster Mac and Cheese. Sharing that one dish wouldn't be enough for most people, but we're trying to diet, and we ate at Dino's Restaurant the night before. Where's the party at? Right here, at the Birchmere! read more

We come to the Birchmere once or twice a year. It's a great venue, that often has acts we like to see. The food is a bit pricey for what you get, but then again it's solid and perfectly passable. There really isn't a bad seat in the house, but if you want a really good seat you've got to get there early to make sure you get to choose your seat in the first 40 or so people to be let through the door. The table service is good, the staff are polite and the other clientele is friendly - which is good because you often find yourself sitting at a table with other people.
