Rock it Grill is the dive bar karaoke place with a good burger. It's under new management, so they are starting to add live bands on weekends. The food is ok. The chicken tenders were a bit overcooked and the fries are so-so. They need to fix the A/C but the fans worked well. We had a great time dancing, drinking and spending time with friends. I've always enjoyed this establishment, but I've repeatedly had uncomfortable experiences with one bartender whose behavior feels hostile and inappropriate. While she has often been rude to me in the past, I never filed a complaint--until Saturday night. That evening, my friend and I came in together. When I ordered a drink, the bartender called me "racist" without provocation and refused to serve me, directing another bartender to do so instead. My friend, who is a Black man, ordered an energy drink shortly afterward, and she again told him that I was racist. When I asked her what the issue was, she threw what appeared to be salt or sugar into my eyes, then immediately signaled the bouncer to remove me and stated that I was banned--after physically assaulting me. I am deeply disappointed by this experience. My recommendation to management is to hire bartenders who treat all patrons with respect, enjoy customer service, and can handle a busy bar professionally. No customer should be verbally harassed, physically assaulted, or targeted based on assumptions or bias. This behavior is unacceptable and undermines what has otherwise been a place I once enjoyed. read more

I've always loved Rock It Grill -- it's been my go-to karaoke spot in Alexandria for years. But last night was nothing like the fun, welcoming vibe I've come to expect. My whole family was in town, excited for a classic Rock It Grill karaoke night, and instead we left disappointed. The DJ running karaoke, who goes by KJ Dusty, was flat-out rude to guests all night. Instead of creating a fun, energetic environment, she barked at people, made snarky comments, and generally treated participants with hostility. Karaoke is supposed to be lighthearted -- people are there to sing, laugh, and enjoy themselves. Her attitude killed the energy in the room. It's honestly crazy that someone in charge of hosting karaoke (a job that is literally about handling drunk people who just want to sing and have fun) could be that unprofessional. I love rock it grill but last night was nowhere near the experience we are used to/have loved in the past. Big shoutout to the bartenders though, they're AMAZING!!!! read more

Kinda surprised at the low ratings for this place as we found this place to be extremely fun! Was it a bit sketchy? Yes. A bit sus? Yup. We're we questioning our decisions when we pulled up? Yes, again. But we think that was the part of the appeal. We figured we would stop by and call it early night before our morning flight, but things started picking up, and we couldn't leave the fun times behind. Getting there before the karaoke was clutch- the bar wasn't as crowded, and there were plenty of seats left. About 20 min before karaoke started, this place got packed! We weren't brave enough to sign up and sing with the mic but the crowd was awesome! The drinks kept flowing and we joined in singing with the crowd a few times. I approached a bartender to order and she, middle aged blonde, yelled at me that there were other people and I would need to wait. I guess thirty minutes isn't patient enough to be a patron here. I've passed Rock It Grill so many times, as I've lived in Alexandria, VA for 17 years now. Don't ask me why I just recently finally tried them out. I should have a long time ago. My server was so nice. I think she was the bartender and that didn't keep her for being attentive at my table. I really appreciate that because that doesn't happen all the time. I ended up ordering their Pedro's Favorite breakfast scrambler. It came with three eggs scrambled with Spicy Ground Beef, Black Olives, Bell Peppers, Tomatoes, Jalapeños, and Monterey Jack Cheese. It came with Sour Cream, Salsa, and a side of Breakfast Potatoes and Toast. I loved the Tex-Mex flavor of the scrambler...all of the ingredients came together well. I also loved the portion size...I definitely did not leave hungry still. Lol. The Breakfast Potatoes were cooked well, crispy but not overcooked. The Toast was pretty good but the butter they had for it was frozen hard. I'd give this whole breakfast scrambler platter an 8 out of 10. I'd give my overall experience from the customer service and food together a 9 out of 10 (8 for the food, 10 for the customer service). Now, when I pass by Rock It Grill again, I might just stop in more often to try other items on their menu. read more

Karaoke starts every night at 9:30. You know I love myself a good karaoke... song list is awesome, and it's the classic open-audience way of signing up on a sheet of paper with your name on song choice... except it's $5. This is the only place where I have ever experienced paying for karaoke outside of booking private rooms. The only other open experience that I had to pay for was at dueling piano bars. Tip -- of course, but to mandate it seems like a bit much :-/. There were a couple of other things that were red flags for me... when I went up to inquire about singing, a couple was singing a song and kinda... screaming... and I heard the DJ say "if they scream again I'm cutting their mic." You're making folks pay just to talk behind their backs... to me that's not a good look. I opted not to sing myself, but I observed some friends sign up, and they were intentionally pushed down on the queue because while they may have signed up first, others paid before them. Karaoke is my biggest de-stressor, and it's supposed to be a carefree and fun experience, so this whole transactional bit doesn't sit well. All that to say, Rock It Grill advertises itself as a karaoke bar, and I personally don't think it's the best place for it with all I said above. But other than that... it's a great place for food and drinks. Chips and guac and wings are good, and the drinks aren't bad prices! The place is a hike from where I live, so I'm not sure when I will return next. read more

They know the regulars and show plenty love to them, even on the busiest nights, while not neglecting tourists and new patrons. Last night in the DC area and my friends wanted to hit up a karaoke bar. I thought why not, but I'm not singing. After a short Uber ride here we were happy to be in good company. I'm not the biggest karaoke fan, but I do have to say they ran this pretty smoothly and that the people participating were killing it on the mic. I was jamming along with the renditions coming out of the stage area and attempted to focus on the menu in front of me. I was hungry but I also wanted to get a drink or two so that I could wind down after a week's worth of work at a conference. With the late hour we were here the menu was a bit limited, but I was able to order what I knew would hold me over. I went with the chicken tenders and a water to start. After a thought about it I decided why not get a margarita as well. When the food arrived I was impressed. Three big chicken planks that were expertly crusted. Then to serve it with fresh cut fries, you got me. This comes with ketchup and I think it was honey mustard. My margarita was on point and decided to order a second. No frills spot for nightly karaoke. This is conveniently located on King St but it is up away from the water. Karaoke starts at 9:30 but the queue books up quick so get there earlier to save your spot. There is usually a $5 fee you pay the DJ for karaoke but you can sing multiple songs with this and he takes Venmo. There's usually table service which is convenient, it can be a little slower on busier nights. I've only ever had their nachos and wings but they're both pretty good, standard American bar dishes. The lighting is darker which is always a little more comforting when singing on stage. I highly recommend this as a low key spot for karaoke. read more

Went in to see the nightlife. Left pretty disappointed. I don't like leaving bad reviews but this place was one to remember. I'm the type to tab out as I go and tip a large amount on my last check just to confirm how much I spend beginning to end. I did the same with four drinks. Each time checking out and the last I tipped 120% meaning I tipped for the other tabs I did not. On my way to my uber I noticed that the receipts I had did not match the amount I was being charged for except the last. As someone who worked in the industry in collage this can only mean one thing. The bartenders are deliberately putting in whatever tip they choose which is illegal may I add. My friend who only ordered one drink and tipped in cash had the same issue somehow being charged for far more than taxes can excuse. Not to mention the bartenders excusing a "shift drink" and throwing it back in front of guest is a sure way to throw your business into the garbage the second someone from the city locks eyes. This place isn't running legally and to the manager who doesn't know, I hope this finds you well so you are aware of where the problems lie. I was there for 3 hours and saw disfunction take place. I came in on a sunday and was almost ignored for 15 minutes. So i raised my arm and the bartender glared over at me as if i was bothering her. When she took my order she seemed irritated by my presence. After im pretty sure my order was forgotten and she went right back to speaking with other customers she honestly did not seem to care. I have been going there sporadically for a couple of years for the karaoke,but I think I'll find another place-I don't care for a DJ that has a bad memory and accuses me of not paying the $5 for singing all night. I handed him $15 for three of us AND pointed to the other two standing next to me. I sang once and then sat there and saw my name on the cue....and it disappeared.Asked him why and he said I didn't pay. I left(it was 1:15am and I was tired),and contacted the bar through social media. Blah blah really sorry blah blah nothing was done about it. We went here for the first time last night because it was close to T-Mobile (we were switching service providers...as if THAT would be of interest to you), AND because Rock It Grill was having their weekly "burger night". I'm glad we stopped here because it's a dive of a place (in a very nice way) and the burgers where DELICIOUS! It's better than Five Guys (only slightly) and almost as good as White Castle (though WC is in very different class)! Think 1950's-1970's decor with pool tables and a stage the size of a poker table, but with an old fashioned bar that could seat 50 close friends (or 60 close, close friends). If you can't feel at home here, there is just something wrong with you! They have a kid's menu, but if you're bringing kids, I would definitely only sit in the booths at the front of the restaurant, because the rest of the place really does have dive bar written all over it...NOT THAT THAT'S A BAD THING! It's difficult to write on a review on such an eclectic place. Rock It is literally one of a kind! You never know what you're going to see or experience when you're there but you'll love it. Our hotel was close in the area and we were just looking for somewhere to eat. My party of 3 walked in and was told to sit anywhere. We sat in a booth by the window. One both did not have a table I was unsure if that was because of COVID to partake in social distancing. We were greeted by the bartender. Wings, nacho supreme, a basket of fries, mushroom burger, and 2 beers. The swiss mushroom burger was to-go and the it was actually happy hour when we went so the beers were $4.50 each. The nachos were really good along with the fries. The wings were alright i could have done with more sauce. Overall we tore the food (wings, nachos, and fries) and the pricing was reasonable. P.s the burger looked and smelled really good but it was for my aunt so I did not get a taste but she said it was very good!
