I purchased a large bird, a Green Wing Macaw from here $5,500. We would come up every week to visit during weaning (about an hour and half drive one way). Their expected lifespan is about 80. We breed birds, but not him, he was a pet, my pet, my baby. Last May I had to put him down due to a disease, PDD. This is spread through saliva and fecal matter, but since he was housed alone none of my other birds could have gotten it from him, thankfully! Our vet who informed us he probably got it during weaning from a breeder using one pipet between birds during hand feeding times. I spoke with Bird Fever's Vet, Dr. Dahlhausen, along with the vet Hei Hei was being seen at, Med Vet Hillsboro, OH, that recommended we put him down at the age of 3! This was a humane decision and I (and both of our vets stand by it) in-spite of how much it hurts me. Hei Hei was a good bird, but they wont provide a replacement bird, or even a refund on the price. I can't seek legal recourse due to the "warranty" only lasting a year, regarding the sale. We did our due diligence we did the autopsy after he was put down, we were broken and it took me time to stop crying to let them know what had happened, and finally to reach out and ask for a refund or replacement bird for the one who was ill. Bird Fever's response to me was devastating and rude! The Audacity to tell me it wasn't a death sentence, and my terms were out of date, in-spite of me getting information directly from not only my own vet but one who is theirs as well! Mind you PDD can lay dormant for years, and is often found in the first 5 years an infected bird can have this disease and only be a carrier. This means their aviary is infected with PDD. This is exactly what Bird Fever told me: "First, I am sorry to read that this happened. As for the health guarantee, it is not a lifetime guarantee. We guarantee the birds to be healthy and free of disease at the time of purchase. You took the bird to an avian vet when it went home, and the vet signed off that the bird was healthy and free of disease. If there was a problem we would have been notified, then. Once the bird leaves the store, we cannot control what happens to the bird or what it is exposed to. As far as PDD is concerned, I am concerned that you went to a vet that is not knowledgeable in regard to the disease. Your terminology is outdated and most of your statements about it are incorrect. PDD is an expression of avian ganglioneuritis, or AGN. AGN is a neurological condition that expresses itself in different ways with PDD being one of the ways. The unfortunate part is if it was PDD, it is very treatable and is no longer a death sentence like it was years ago. There is no test for PDD as the only way to confirm the diagnosis is through histopathology. The only way to do that in a living bird is a crop biopsy. Went to the store in February to purchase a male canary. Only the males sing, and we wanted a singer! Owner had one canary left. She said it was a male and that she had heard it sing, but couldn't guarantee it would sing once it left the store. In retrospect, a red flag. Six weeks pass and lots of chirping but no singing. My mom bought a bird from here in 2017 as a hatchling and we have been shopping at bird fever ever since. They have a wide variety of handmade bird toys, bird treats, and food mixes. They also usually have reasonably priced babies and new birds. We have taken several of our birds over the years here for nail and beak trims as well as the occasional wing clipping. Just be aware they only do large bird grooming on the weekends because they have more staff members for help! Mark is awesome and super knowledgeable about any questions we have for him. read more

How they talk to people who are simply getting a trim is beyond appalling, I took my birds in to get a beak trim, and nail trim. And I had a simple question about length of beak and they gave me a lecture in a bad attitude. read more

This is THE place n town to buy treats and supplies for your exotic birds. We bought our macaw here 10 years ago and still make the 15 mile trip over regularly to have his talons clipped and purchase bird friendly papaya. The store has changed owners and moved to a nicer location next to Castleton Square Mall over the ten years. It is a small independent operation. They carry a wide variety of birds that you adopt and bond with as babies. The staff is knowledgable and helpful and will teach you how to bird proof your home and care for your feathered friend. Once you pick out your bird, you can also purchase a fancy California-made cage. And of course you will need lots of toys so they have those as well. They carry a variety of healthy bird foods and treats. I'm guessing they carry the largest variety of bird products in the area. The prices are very reasonable and have not increased during the years we have been coming. But I'll warn you, if you stop they you will most likely come home with a new friend. read more

Oh my word! All the larger birds on the middle are "her" personal birds. She has 2 hyacinths sharing one cage and their nails are so long and sharp. Its horrible. HER birds are starting to pluck themselves. There was an African grey and a cocktail who have seen better days. This looks like a bird collector who has a store. After years of working with Omar's, in Southern California, we hoped we would find a good bird store in the Indianapolis area, now that we are here. Unlike Omar's, Bird Fever is dirty, and the birds are not well cared for. Tail feathers are not showing strong health, and temperaments for many of the larger birds are terrible. The temperament issues simply show there is little daily handling of each bird. So far, we've found nothing even close to a quality bird store, in Central Indiana! read more

I'm shocked this place has any positive reviews. They are either created by people they know or by people that are uneducated about birds. The birds in this store are thin, greasy, shabby and sad. The cages (and all the products for sale) are dirty. The bird's bowls are filled with some kind of "pellets" that look like fruity pebbles cereal. They are stressed, sickly and filthy. Many have yellow/greenish around their tails from diarrhea. I don't know if these people are hoarders and can't afford to take care of them all or what. It was HEARTBREAKING. If you have a heart for animals, don't go in there it will sicken you. read more

If you are considering adding a parrot to your family I recommend spending some time here to interact with the many birds of all different kinds. I love parrots and have two that were born here at Bird Fever. The owners here are extremely knowledgable and helpful. One of my birds, a blue and gold macaw, became a very picky eater after I had her for 17 years. They offered me great advice and recommended several types and brands of food until we found one that she loves. The selection of bulk food, nuts, and treats is especially nice. Prices are very reasonable as well. Cheaper than buying online, and you are supporting a wonderful small business. read more

They birds r pretty friendly for a pet store. Only down side is the store is pretty crowded by cages and most of the birds r not for sale. I have been owned by a Black Headed Caique, and currently an African Grey. I have had a love affair with parrots for a long time. I moved to Indy from So California. I take good care of my birds. I take them to vets for regular checkups every year I have visited lots of bird stores, and one of the worst is Bird Fever. They are piled up so high, and in close proximity, and the cages are filthy. The good stores ask you to sterilize your hands when you enter or before handling birds. This doesn't happen here. The owners are negligent. read more

I bought my baby cockatiel from Bird Fever in January of 2018 and I can't say enough good things about this place. The owners are wonderful, extremely helpful, and well informed people who can help even the most beginner of bird owners. I had a cockatiel growing up so while I had pre existing care knowledge the staff at bird fever helped me learn additional information as well as providing contacts for indy avian vets. I go back here for all my bird's food, toys and treats. The store itself is a fun place to visit as they have several "resident" birds who aren't up for adoption but are very friendly and fun to see. The latest toy I picked up for my cockatiel she is absolutely obsessed with! It's a bunch of shoelace like strings with aglets all over it which she loves to break apart. She is also a huge fan of their homemade seed sticks which she goes crazy for. I would recommend this store to anyone looking at adopting a bird, who already owns a bird, or who just would like to go see some for a fun visit. read more

This is the best place to go for any parrot owner! Since we discovered Bird Fever, all of our birds have come from them. You can adopt a bird when it is still a baby and it will stay with them until it is weaned and ready to come home. (They encourage you to visit while it is still on baby food so that it will get used to you.) In addition to offering healthy babies from responsible breeders, Bird Fever has the best selection in town of food, treats, toys, perches, and more. They also offer grooming services at very reasonable prices. Their new location has a separate room for grooming and a separate room for baby visits. I could not recommend them more! read more

Everyone has been great that we worked with and the owners have been so nice helpful and answer any questions...we go back for supplies and bird care also. Over the last 2.5 years I've gone from owning 9 birds (8 love birds, 1 conure) to just 3 birds (we gave away most and our papa lovebird past away). Our first pair of lovebirds laid a clutch shortly after we got them and we kept all 5 cute feathery babies. So when Pancake and Lunchbox (yes, can you tell I love food) had their next clutch of six eggs 8-weeks later, you do the math, we were panic mode. Called around and found Bird Fever, they were willing to take our little babies 3-weeks after their hatch date. I really appreciate the staff at Bird Fever; they are family owned and run and they hand raised all our feathery babies. It was fun to come in every week and see how much they've grown and I felt such happiness whenever I was told each of the babies went to their forever home. If you visit their store don't be surprised if you hear someone whistling and some of the feathery friends trying to check you out; a few of the parrots are talkers! And very sweet. We stopped buying our bird food from Petsmart because it's so much fresher and I love supporting small businesses. If you are ever in the area you should check out their little store, you never know, you might see one of our hatchlings in the baby window! read more

I have gotten all of my birds (3 since 1998--my cockatiel Mocha will be 4 this year) from this central Indiana bird supply store, "the Midwest's premiere place to find exotic pet birds" with "the largest selection of bird products" in this area, according to their website, and it has always been a great experience. They are located in Castleton, just behind the mall, on 86th Street. We take Mocha there to get his wings and toenails clipped and Joanna and the rest of the staff are always friendly and helpful. They obviously love birds and are very knowldgeable, answering all of our questions and helping us get food refills and more. The birds are all hand-fed and don't go home until they are ready--no forced weaning at this place. When you walk in the door, it isn't uncommon to be greeted by several Caiques, Green Amazons, Green-Cheeked Conures or a Macaw saying, "hello", and they will tell you "good bye" as you leave and talk to you as you browse! The noise level can be overwhelming, but if you are a bird lover like I am, it is almost relaxing. The walls are lined with cages containing various birds, and throughout the store are more birds as well as empty cages for sale, bird toys and supplies. They also have a self-serve food dispenser with various types of bird food, as well as an incubator where you can watch the babies. Wing and toenail clipping is done at the counter so you can watch. This is the only time I see anything "untidy" in the store, with feathers and toenails dropping to the floor. However, they sweep them up, and everything else is very clean and organized, for a store devoted to birds and bird supplies. I definitely recommend them for any bird/bird supply needs you may have! read more

Sadly, this shop leaves a lot to be desired. Everyone seems so pleasant working here until you have a problem and then they refuse to work with you. We have purchased so many treats, toys, perches, food and numerous cages without a problem, so if that's what you are after- the selection is pretty nice. We recently purchased an actual bird from here and the bird was sick. In the time it takes to feed or water the bird, you would know it is sick. They decided to sell the bird undisclosing any information about it's health or that they would refuse to even help in the least with a vet checkup. You would think they would want to help you out with the checkup so they could be informed on if it was contagious or not, especially with so many other birds in a cage in very close contact, but what do I know. Sure we could return the bird, the only option they gave us, but who knows if they would just throw it in the cage of 'misfit birds' as they call it and let nature take it's quick course. Not allowing it to be sold again because they know it's sick. Heck, they could even turn around and sell it again, maybe with out even taking it for a checkup themselves, who knows. I know from experience, which bird fever denies to the death, that even PetSmart gives or would take your recently purchased pet for a general checkup. I know because I had a PetSmart do that for us. They offered to. I never requested it. But if you talk to these people, that would never happen because they worked at one. Long story short, don't buy a pet here unless you know exactly what you are getting into. Try your best to look for symptoms of a sick bird. Make sure you know what they would do if you take the bird home and it's sick or heaven forbid just dies. You may not like their answer or their lack of empathy or human decency, but at least you know what you are getting into. They sure won't tell you that up front. read more

Liked the store and all the birds, but the workers kept starring my boyfriend and I down. It made me feel like we weren't welcomed. Told them I was getting my first bird this summer and instead of being excited and asking me questions or giving me tips they made me feel like I shouldn't be their. Overall not a bad store but they could work on being better with customers mainly with new owners or those doing their research about getting a bird before getting one. read more

Bird Fever has the widest variety of parrots for sale of any pet shop in Indianapolis. Although it is usually less expensive to purchase a parrot directly from a breeder or parrot owner, what they generally lack is the selection of Bird Fever. Bird Fever also has a good selection of pet supplies specifically for pet birds. However, they should feed their birds only organic food with no dyes, because birds are sensitive to chemicals. read more

The staff here is amazing. I bought my first bird here over ten years ago. This year I bought another. The staff is insanely well versed in avian husbandry and obviously love their work. They are honest and blunt with information and if they don't know an answer, they find it for you. When I put down my deposit they were very clear that I would not be taking him home until he was ready, when I did take him home he got fussy and refused to eat or drink at first, I called and they had me bring him back to try again in a few days. They cared so much that he was transitioned well! Excellent service, trustworthy, and worth every penny I have ever spent there. Birds are expensive, in my opinion a higher price makes sure you're really committed to giving a forever home. read more

I posted on Bird Fever's Face Book page today when message about some of their new baby birds was posted. I asked the following question: I asked if Bird Fever had any policy or procedures about protecting baby birds and their mature birds from PDD, a highly contagious and very fatal virus. I asked that do they follow the proper procedures to protect their birds, and if they could demonstrate those practices and can show that their birds are PDD free and how they were protecting themselves from the virus. I also asked if they published that type of information for consumers. I asked these questions because I purchased a Cockatiel from their store October 2014 and it died March 2015. It lived less than a year. I had a biopsy done and it strongly suggests that it had PDD. I asked a series of questions. And that post was deleted and I am now prevented from posting on their Face Book page. Not only did Bird Fever not answer my question, they deleted the post and prevented me from posting. This behavior is highly indicative that Bird Fever knows about PDD and they are not engaging in safe practices to protect their birds. I brought a bird from Bird Fever. It died in less than a year with under questionable circumstances. I would encourage everyone to ask Bird Fever those questions regarding PDD. If they can't answer or won't answer, or kick you out of the store, or vilify this post, they have something to hide. Go elsewhere where pet shop owners can answer the questions. God knows Bird Fever hasn't answered mine. read more
