IndyHumane is the B E S T place in Indiana. I recently lost my dog of 8years, and I came here looking to adopt a puppy! The staff was very welcoming and greeted you and asked if you needed help. First thing I said was I was interested in Bacon and he was already out in the lobby. I took him home immediately. Best puppy I could ever ask for. Very healthy. Going back today to get the rest of his shots! Shots are only $20 a piece with some things a little pricier. They set me up for insurance for my baby that gives me 80% reimbursement of my vet bill and after today he'll be all good to go to live his best life. Thank you, IndyHumane.

    Picking up our new fosters!

Since my initial review, my son and I have went thru the process of becoming official fosters for Indy Humane. Our experience has been so positive that I wanted to update my review to shine a light on their amazing foster program and veterinary staff. Jessica Kanalos invited my son and I to attend her neonatal kitten care class, because she knew of our involvement and obsession with orphaned neonatal kittens. Her class was so informative and we learned a lot, even after years of caring for orphaned kittens ourselves. When she spoke about the support that Indy Humane offers their fosters, I wanted in. This Fall will make 5 years that I've been involved in rescue. I've been frustrated in the past, mostly, with lack of resources and veterinary care with my previous partnerships. Since joining Indy Humane, we've been really impressed with the level of care that our fosters receive. We've had a medical emergency with one kitten and medical issues with a sick foster, and everything was handled quickly. Even an after hours emergency. We're also given all the food, medication and supplies that we need for our fosters and picking up more supplies, as needed, is easy. Most times, when we go in to pick up and drop off, my son and I watch as that doorbell to drop off another abandoned pet rings, and rings, and rings. Every time, I am in awe of everyone working with me and around me. It is clearly a high stress job that does not stop. But everyone that I've encountered has been a pleasure to work with, friendly, helpful and compassionate. My son and I both are definitely impressed with how Indy Humane runs their foster program and cares for the animals in their care. From putting obese cats thru water/treadmill therapy to providing behavioral training, they definitely take the welfare of animals seriously.

I write this review as a recent adopter for my furry friend Jack. I won't lie - finding a dog is a stressful process, especially when the dog you want keeps getting adopted. Again and again. It can be discouraging, but I like that they keep things updated live on their website with adoptable animals. It really benefits the people that have the time to take off whenever and get there before they open to stand in line. Finally, after a few visits, I found Jack. He was so happy to see me for the first time - I knew he was the perfect match. The two volunteers helped me and were very happy and encouraging. After some time visiting and playing with him outside, I then began the adoption process. It took about 75 minutes or so. Honestly, I was very unsatisfied with my adoption counselor. She was very intimidating, and I felt like she was almost trying to scare me away from adopting Jack, given his very short interaction with a dog that they attempted to interact him with. I mean, c'mon, if you were given up, transferred to a new city and then thrown into a random play area with a random dog, wouldn't you be a little stand off-ish too? As Kitty B mentions in her review, the counselor honestly made poor Jack seem like he was going to be the meanest dog ever and that is far from the case. He's just a very shy, timid, stressed out pup that was overwhelmed and not ready to be socialized when he was forced to at the behavior analysis. Some of the counselor's suggestions were just almost too much for me too - she suggested I never tell my dog "no." ....what? My one issue I have with them is never answering the phones. I work in nonprofits, so I get that times can get busy, but it makes me a bit frustrated when they use the excuse of being a nonprofit to never, literally never, answer their phones. Not a good enough excuse for me - especially given how many amazing volunteers they have. I appreciate the services and products that they offer as well. I'm happy that they're available and that their mission is so important in the community. Customer service could use a quick brush up. Anywho, the HSI is a good place to find your furry friend, and I hope to use their clinics in the future too. The volunteers were all very helpful.

I first fell in love with Indy Humane after reading the sassy and adorable biographies of the adoptable animals on their website (love their digital presence!). I knew from the first day I stepped foot in there that it's a great place to volunteer! All volunteers are required to attend an info session (if you can't make it, they send you the info via email), fill out an application, attend a basic training (general info + shelter tour), an intro to shelter felines or canines course, a shadow day, and a buddy day (canine volunteers only). The process from start to finish takes 3-4 weeks before you can start volunteering independently. Everyone I have interacted with here has been incredibly kind and dedicated to the shelter. Indy Humane truly values its volunteers and appreciates their hard work! I've been really impressed with the communication regarding steps of training - they have it down to a science. Know going into it that there is a $15 training fee and they ask volunteers to donate 8 hours/month (most go in at a regular day/time for 2 hours/week), so if you can't make that commitment regularly it might not be a good fit. They want their volunteers to be active in the shelter! The Humane Society cares for 200-300 animals at any time, and invests $600-$800 per animal during their time at the shelter. They are a private non-profit and rely on donations! These animals are in a high-stress situation and are in need of a loving home, and Indy Humane does everything in their power to socialize the animals and provide them top-notch care. Every animal undergoes a behavioral and medical assessment prior to hitting the adoption floor. Adoption fees range from $0 (FIV+ cats) to $250 (puppies). An adoption counselor will do their best to find a good match for you and your lifestyle - after all, these animals are looking for their fur-ever homes (you'd be surprised how many are adopted as littles ones and returned after a few years because owners can no longer care for them.) I genuinely look forward to donating my time and socializing the cats once a week. It is such a positive place and I felt confident day one that I was prepared to begin volunteering independently! Other notes: *low cost vaccine clinic and spay/neuter services available *re"tale" store available in lobby with dog and cat products (proceeds benefit the Humane Society - shop here!) *closed to the public on Thursdays and major holidays *ALWAYS looking for donations - check the wish list on their website

I love Indy humane. After months of scouring the inter webs looking for a dog (I was new to Indy and didn't know about Indy humane) I decided to check for places near me that sold dogs. Several friends of mine told me about the importance of not shopping at a pet shop so I ended up looking for shelters. I'd been really watching Indy humane's website for a while when a dog named Dobby showed up in May. Medium dog, white, young, looked sweet as could be. The next day (Saturday) my boyfriend and I head there a little after they opened to check out this pup. Unfortunately, when we found him his papers were gone meaning someone was already online to adopt him. I was devastated, especially after meeting him and seeing how sweet he was. My boyfriend convinced me to look around a bit and I did but my heart wasn't in it. Then I see this timid sweet tiny little thing. She was so shy when we took her out of her cage but she took a quick liking to my boyfriend, snuggling up next to him. I fell in love. We took her home that day and now she is my fur baby and I love her so much. She lives a very full life now, complete with plenty of treats and toys. This Christmas was our first one together and she was spoiled by mom, dad, Santa, grandma and grandpa and her aunt. She makes everyday so much better. Best. Decision. Ever. Please excuse the tons of pictures of her. I can't help it haha

I believe all of the scheduling is being done online-you might check that out. I scheduled my dog's vaccines for the Michigan road site online.

I went on the site and saw pictures of the Cavaliers that were up for adoption. They were really so cute that I google this breed and fell in love with them. So I applied to foster a dog and about a week later they called and told me that they had just found out about this puppy mill in MO that had been shut down and they were driving there to pick up 20 dogs and puppies. So they needed fosters right away. I drove to Indiana and picked up the dog (puppy) that I was fostering. Her name was Fergie and she was 6 months old and in perfect health. Well, of course I knew I was going to fail at being a foster because the second I met Fergie...I knew she was mine. So about a week after I was fostering her I finally broke the news to Lucky Star that I was going to adopt Fergie. The whole process was very easy and what a great feeling to know she was rescued away from a bad life. They pay all the vet bills for being fixed, a complete check up, all their shots and teeth checked. They do ask for a donation when you adopt. But they do have alot of vet bills as some of the dogs that come out of puppy mills aren't always healthy because they were so abused. A small cost for saving the life of a beautiful, snuggable, kissable puppy. I want to rescue a bunch more, but I am at the limit of two dogs right now. Check them out at http://www.luckystarcavalierrescue.org/ and they will melt your heart too.

Most of us are familiar with our local county animal shelters, but I had never heard of Cats Haven…read moreuntil volunteering with a group of friends. Cats Haven is Indianapolis' oldest no-kill, free-roaming cat sanctuary. It cares especially for elderly cats or those with special needs (missing limbs/eyes, genetic disorders, etc). I would estimate in this three-story house they have at least 100 cats. {Did my fact checking - on its website, it says 300 cats are in its "network" - meaning living in the shelter or in a foster home or feral cat colony in the community). They do adopt some cats out who are well enough to be adopted out, but for most of the felines, this is the place they will live out their days in comfort, basking in the sunlight or by the fireplace. For awhile, it kept its location a secret in an effort to prevent midnight drop-offs of unwanted cats {they do not take cats from the public}. Now it seems the address is more public, largely because it is in greater need of donations. Its most recent fundraiser was the Purr-Fect Cup Cat Cafe. It looks like it is hoping to introduce more of the community to its work in the coming year. Cats Haven has an open-door policy, and anyone can drop in during business hours. Fair warning: the place VERY much smells like cats {what do you expect - there are cats everywhere} but I am impressed with the quality of the facility and how dedicated its staff is. I hope Cats Haven will see continued success!

Without this shelter, many of the cats would be euthanized because of their disabilities. It seems like an awfully big responsibility to care for some of these cute little critters, but I understand the passion that makes it all work. I can see how this can be an issue for those that are cautious about ensuring that the animals are going to a good home, but on the flip side, it's a great event that helps to find permanent houses for most of the animals (just an assumption). This year, I went on both days. The first day I arrived 2ish hours after they had opened and nearly all of the pups were gone that were what I was looking for. I wanted to go back the next day to check it out, thinking that more pups would have been brought in - not the case at all. Cats were still in abundance both days. I got there right on time and they had nearly no new dogs from the last time. Sadly, there were all nearly Pits too. Even worse, my apartment complex doesn't allow Pits. I love the idea but hope that next year, even more dogs are brought in on the 2nd day so they can find their forever homes. The volunteers are great too. They usually didn't know most of the answers to the questions you had because they were simply volunteers, so that might be something to improve on next year. Instead of having the volunteers taking you and your possibly furry friend to the "meet and greet" stations, have one of the staff members from the shelters/rescues there so that you can get your questions answered while you're getting to know them. That was one major flaw I had. Every question I had wasn't able to be answered. Big props to the volunteers though!

THIS IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL EVENT…read more I cannot stress enough that if you are looking for a cat or dog, GO TO INDY MEGA. I would highly suggest going earlier in the event too because animals get adopted quickly!!! All the adoptable animals are up-to-date on vaccines, spayed/neutered, and microchipped. They cost $30 for adoption and they are ready to go to their furrever homes!! A lot of the shelters too offer vets that give free wellness checks or 30 days of free pet care insurance. (FYI: most vets will give you a free first visit if you adopted from a shelter). DOGS: One thing that I do want to caution about: A lot of the dogs are pitbulls or pit bull mixes. I have NOTHING against Pits; I love them. What I want to specifically bright to light is that a lot of these dogs had to go to an only pet home and were not good with kids. As a cat lady, this doesn't really work with my family. There a lot of other dogs who are not like this but I just want people to know this because there are a lot of dogs who need some love in a single pet/no kid home. I KNOW there are people out there who can do this for these animals. I heard that all the dogs got adopted except one the last time this event was held. AMAZING!!!! CATS: WOW. So many cats at Indy Mega. I think hundreds and maybe thousands of cats. I came at the end of the event and was leaving when I found the MOST perfect kitten who I just knew belonged to me and needed to come home! There was only 20 minutes left in the event but I was not rushed into the decision at all. The volunteers helped me visit with the cat, listened, and helped me through the decision making process without pushing me into adopting. If the volunteers didn't know the answer to my questions, they directed me to someone who could. The adoption process of my new cat was so easy. Took about 10 minutes. The greatest part is all the stuff they sent me home with. I got coupon books for both Petco and PetSmart. I got TONS of toys and treats. They gave me some wet food and a wet food can cover. I even got a bucket for free 10 pound box of litter (so helpful) and the bucket can be reused so I can go back for more discounted litter at Petco (I think). They really set you up for success. They want these pets to go to great homes. I couldn't be more thankful for such an amazing event. Great job Indy!!! and PLEASE check this event out even if you are just considering getting a pet.
