I cannot recommend this office based on my recent experience. What started as a recommendation to replace a filling with an inlay turned into a month long ordeal of pain and, eventually, an emergency root canal. Throughout the process, I often felt dismissed and rushed. Despite returning multiple times with ongoing pain, my concerns were not fully addressed until a crown was suggested. While I appreciated a same day appointment, it took four hours, during which I was left alone in the chair for over an hour without anyone checking in on me with a drilled open tooth as my local anesthesia wore off. When the pain continued after the crown, I sought a second opinion from an endodontist. They discovered my root was dying, a possibility never mentioned at PB Smiles, and immediately put me on antibiotics. I truly wonder how long it would have taken PB smiles to catch this infection had I not taken it upon myself to find another opinion. The endodontist also told me that the crown was poorly seated and would likely need replacement within a few years and told me in no uncertain terms that I should that I should find a new general dentist. While I understand procedures have risks, the lack of empathy and the failure to investigate the source of my pain led to weeks of unnecessary suffering. And I honestly wonder if the inlay and subsequent crown were even necessary. If you value feeling heard and receiving thorough clinical care, I would suggest looking elsewhere read more

Finally getting around to posting this review. I went to PB Smiles because my insurance company covered them and they were close to where I was living. I had an appointment first thing in the morning and had to wait 25 minutes, even though I had filled out documents ahead of time. I went in for a teeth cleaning and they took x-rays and let me know I would need extensive deep cleaning and additional dental work. Someone was going to prepare a quote so I waited in the room for 15 minutes and no one came in. I then went to the front desk to let them know I was leaving because at this point, I had been there for over an hour and a half. I left with no teeth cleaning and I promise of a quote. Received an email about a week later asking me to schedule my treatment, except I had never heard back from anyone. Later that day I received two quotes... One for $6500 and one for a little over $10,000 worth of work. And no, they would not do a teeth cleaning... I had to book deep cleanings instead. I'm in my late 50s and have always had two, if not three, teeth cleanings a year. I've had braces twice and whenever there is a concern I have, I'm at the dentist. To learn of this much necessary dental work meant I needed to get a second opinion. I probably receive an email from them every 10 days to two weeks about $100 off, holiday specials, the importance of teeth cleaning, and reminding me to book appointments. This is after I have tried to unsubscribe. A month later, I scheduled a teeth cleaning with another dentist who said I did not need any deep cleaning whatsoever, but they did recommend a partial gold overlay, which would run me about $900. Because my insurance covers teeth cleaning twice a year, every six months, I just went to a new dentist today because I have since moved out out of the San Diego area. I asked about deep cleaning and the need to get that done. I was told my gums were fine and why would I think I needed a deep cleaning. I had all of the documentation and the two quotes from PB Smiles that I sent to this dentist and the one I visited in San Diego. Both let me know that they were shocked to see the extensive recommended work that didn't match the needs of my mouth and teeth. I have learned that recommending deep cleaning is the new game in dental care and I'm grateful that my gut told me I needed to get a second opinion after going to PB Smiles. Extremely pushy sales tactics - felt more like a used car lot than a dental office My husband and I had a terrible experience at PB Smiles in Pacific Beach and will never be returning. From the moment we arrived, the focus seemed to be on upselling rather than providing straightforward care. They were particularly aggressive with me. I went in for a deep cleaning, but they added laser treatment without clearly explaining the extra cost upfront. Only after I questioned why the bill was so high did they casually mention, "Oh, that's the laser -- we totally recommend it." It felt like they were trying to sneak it in and charge me without proper consent. When I casually mentioned having implants, they immediately jumped to recommending $25,000 worth of extensive work on my mouth. It came across as opportunistic rather than genuine concern for my health. My husband only needed a routine maintenance cleaning, yet they told him he had issues he didn't actually have and were very pushy about unnecessary treatments. You could clearly sense the staff felt constant pressure to sell. The whole process felt unprofessional and shady. A salesperson came in between the doctor and hygienist, sat us down, rapidly went through costs, and pushed us to sign quickly. When we pushed back on the high-pressure tactics, they suddenly offered random discounts -- which only made the whole thing feel even more manipulative, especially in a medical setting where patients are already anxious about their health. They seem to be short staffed here. Waiting a few minutes after checkin to be taken back. Wait time in between X-ray and being seen by dentist. X-rays and teeth check took over an hour so I had to come back another day for the cleaning. I thought my cleaning appointment was at 12:15 but front desk said it was 12. I arrived at 12:15 and immediately felt uncomfortable as Madison was extremely rude talking about the appointment time mix up and stating that I would be fined in the future for being late. I felt very unwelcome and like I wanted to leave. Will not be coming back here and do not recommend. read more

I had made an appointment for a cleaning because I lived close and it was covered by my insurance. During my appointment, I was surprised to find out that I needed additional unexpected dental work. In retrospect, I wish I had gotten a second opinion about whether it was necessary, but at the time, I didn't know better and trusted the experts. Looking back, I know now that this dentist is known for upselling and convincing patients to get work done that is not necessary. What should have been just a cleaning, left me with a bill for $2500. I actually started to cry in front of the staff because I was overwhelmed and did not feel financially equipped to take on the bill at the time. There was no bedside manner despite my embarrassment. Today had to be the worst cleaning I ever experienced, sat down for an hour and had about 10 min worth of cleaning. The rest was all about how bad my teeth need more work and how my gums are magically disappearing and getting lower. I'm done with this place, pure scam. This was by far the most bizarre dental experience I've ever had. I recently moved to PB and was lazy in doing research on a good dentist. I probably couldn't have chosen a worse one if I tried. Was there an hour and a half, and they didn't clean my teeth!! I know that they saw I still had my wisdom teeth and immediately saw dollar signs. I have been told by every other dentist that I have great teeth and room for my wisdom teeth that have grown in perfectly straight; I've never had a cavity. This dentist told me I needed antibiotics in between my teeth (?) and that I had tooth decay (?) - all apparently a result of not having my wisdom teeth removed - so a deeper cleaning and antibiotics were needed. I told them I didn't want any of that, and I asked for the routine cleaning. He said that wasn't normally part of a first visit (?) I had them email me my x-rays and will never be coming back. This has been one of the worst experiences I've had at a dental office. I've been waiting since January for a deep cleaning, and I was repeatedly told by the front desk that they were still waiting on insurance approval. Every time I called to ask for an update, the reception staff were dismissive, unhelpful, and often rude. It felt like asking simple questions was an inconvenience to them. After contacting my insurance directly, I found out my procedure had actually been approved for over a month. Thankfully, they provided documentation confirming this. To make matters worse, after reviewing the claim, I noticed the office attempted to charge my insurance over $1,000 for a deep cleaning, which raised serious concerns for me. Overall, the lack of communication, poor customer service, and billing concerns made this a very frustrating experience. Terrible customer service in regards to the office staff!! I was in PB (from Las Vegas, NV) to take care of my Daughter who had wrist surgery. I called the day after my service for an emergency crown replacement to receive an itemized bill & insurance company estimate (that I signed before I left the office). I was told that it would be sent to my email as the office manager wasn't in but I never received it!! I paid the insurance estimated amount on the day of the service 2/5/26. I checked the claim from Met Life (the participating insurance company) & found that the claim had been paid & closed. TWO MONTHS LATER I received a bill for an additional amount dated 4/2/26. I contacted PB Smiles Dental upon my return from out of town for a death in the family only to be told that the Office Manager would have to get back to me. I never received a response & felt the matter was closed as this bill showed my patient responsibility total was a $.80 credit & it must've been a billing error. A MONTH LATER I received another bill dated 5/2/26 showing the same amount owed with $27 adjustment under the insurance column. I contacted PB Smiles Dental again to request to speak to the Office Manager only to be placed on hold & sent to a voicemail after a half hour!! I left a detailed message to have the Office Manager contact me for an explanation of this owed amount as it doesn't match anything!! THE FOLLOWING DAY I received letter from TEKCOLLECT that a different amount has been assigned to them for collection!! I have no issue the Dentist that took care of me, Dr. Brumand, but I shouldn't have to pay a bill without an explanation of the amount owed considering the Participating insurance provider claim was already paid & closed!! Update to my review: Finally connected with the Operations Manager Stephan today 5/18/26 . He apologized for not responding to my messages as he honestly stated that he never received them. Shady Billing --Stay Away I've now had four visits to this office, and every single time they've tried to overcharge me for a fluoride treatment I never received and explicitly opted out of. Today was no different--and it's clear this isn't a mistake, it's a pattern. This time, my hygienist recommended a laser cleaning, quoting me $140. When I asked if there was a discount, she dropped it to $100 on the spot. Why is there a negotiation process for a medical service? That's not transparency--that's haggling, and it shouldn't happen in a healthcare setting. At checkout, they slipped the fluoride charge back onto my bill again--despite the fact that I declined the treatment as always. When I called them on it, they claimed it was "included" in something else. So let's be clear: if I hadn't caught it, they would have charged me $30 out-of-pocket, and then billed my insurance for it too. That's attempted double billing. And when I questioned it, they blamed the hygienist again--never owning up to the process failure or the unethical billing practices. The real shame is that my hygienist is fantastic and I will absolutely miss her outstanding care. Bottom line: this place is more focused on padding their billing than providing honest care. If you're not reading your invoices line by line, you will get taken advantage of. I'm done giving them chances. Avoid this office unless you enjoy being nickel-and-dimed and gaslit. read more

Horrible service The doctor couldn't talk normal, was screaming in my face everything wrong in a matter for 30 seconds and was telling me I should get about 8 things done and said, crown, bridge, possibly route canal but better to charge and then they can remove if not needed. I said, I'm here for a regular dental cleaning but he decided to try and sell me on 30 things that other dentists I have religiously gone too never pointed out. I only went here to try a new place close to the house. Tried harder to be a salesman than a good dentist. When I asked why would you charge me for multiple items, just tell me what I definitely need to get done, not charge first then remove. Decided to scream so everyone can hear, "can you not afford it." I said excuse me, I am not going to let you overcharge me and I want to know ahead of time, not wait until you start working on my teeth to tell me I need more or less things. That is unbelievable to try and overcharge people for things they may or major not need. So unprofessional. I told him right away, print me an invoice what it would cost, and I do not want to schedule anything. Tried to tell me I needed 2000-3000+ dollars worth of work when my other dentists look for ways to help and work with me and tell me I should get 30 things done and try to overcharge me, embarrass me when I ask cost, and act like a professional who actually cares, not a greedy salesman trying to make money off of people. A new patient to Dr Gee at PB SMILES DENTISTRY, THE OFFICE IS CLEAN And BIGHT. I went to get a basic cleaning and xrays done. The office has a 180° xray system. It showed I had a loose tooth that was not attached to jaw bone and it needed to be removed before infection around tooth and gums could get worse. The extraction of tooth would cost $1,250 and cleaning would cost $615. They showed me the tooth wiggled, so I had the tooth removed and a bone graft done. This procedure cost $1,250. The cleaning would cost $615! I called my dental insurance. Found out they were going to charge $615 for LAZER cleaning, no covered by insurance. I opted for the deep cleaning at zero cost. I had signed for a financial payments. I didn't get any paperwork. I did sign to extraction and graft done not realizing I signed for lazer cleaning. I asked why so much, the front office said the dentist recommended it. When I asked why? My dental insurance explained only 2 basic and xrays or 1 deep cleaning was allowed on this plan. I got a text message from Smiles Generation Financial saying THEY PAID $1,865 TO THE PS SMILES DENTISTRY BEFORE THE CLEANING WAS DONE! When I went to the Dentist office the next week for the deep cleaning, not the $615t lazer cleaning, I asked for the cleaning to be taken off the plan. They said I would get paperwork im 2 weeks and they would let Dr. Gee know. I need to get this charge of $615 removed. I'm won't go back for the inlay work to be done. It's not covered by my dental insurance. I'm very disappointed in the financial plan. My insurance said they had not received a file for work done! So now I have to get the finance plan adjusted and think twice about going back after I get my $615 back!!! read more

I'm sorry to write such a bad review, but it's been a year and a half and I've given PB smiles many chances to get it right and they haven't. I've been in for FIVE APPOINTMENTS since Dr Schaller performed on-lay that caused me pain. I've made countless calls to the office and to Dr Sam Schaller with no progress. I felt dismissed every time I complained. Dr Schaller said- "teeth are weird" and "this is why you read the consent forms for a procedure. It's all in the paperwork you signed that this can happen". Another time a PA suggested I simply grind my almonds and put them in smoothies going forward! I wish I'd read the reviews about this place doing unnecessary work before I agreed to the onlay in the 1st place. I'm 32/ I've never needed dental work in my life- I saw my prior dentist 1 year before and they never mentioned me needing work, but suddenly Dr Schaller said I needed 2 crowns/ onlays. It was expensive and I felt uncomfortable, but Dr Schaller made it sound urgent and said my tooth was about to crack. THE REAL KICKER- I just went back to my prior dentist today whom I love (La Jolla Dental) and she said all I needed was a new filing replacement and I could have avoided all this. I remember being told that I needed two fillings right before going home (where I would be able to see my childhood dentist who is a family friend, completely trust worthy and has all the latest dental tech). I was well over due for a new dentist after moving to SD in 2021 so when I went to my insurance provider site, I was glad to see this small office so close to my home. I went somewhere else first and was flabbergasted by the estimate due to being out of network so let me tell you, it really matters to make sure they're in-network! I came here and told them I wanted to get another opinion on my initial experience and was impressed by the care and detail the dentist took with this consultation. I ended up enjoying the personal service the staff extends and the insurance numbers were much more reasonable so I went with it! The office is small but clean and friendly. They actually share a parking lot with my GP and I can't get over how TINY the parking spots are! Definitely give extra time to be able to park and walk over from the neighboring streets if you can. The biggest plus I have here is the online chart experience! While I've been in more modern dentist offices (equipment wise and with tvs to distract the patient from the work being done) for some reason those offices still didn't have an online portal. But PB Smiles does! I really appreciate the ability to self serve by simply logging-in. I can see my appointments, upcoming events, any outstanding items I need to do pre-appointment and get my bills myself so I can submit them to my HSA. Paperless healthcare is a huge plus for me. I needed a regular cleaning, deep gum treatment (my fault for not going to the dentist for so long) and then 2 cavities that might have resulted in root canals (wouldn't know until in there). It's always such a tough call for me with the dentist. You never know what you're going to get and I have had a lot of past work done on my teeth... it's my pet peeve when a dentist tells me "everything is urgent" so I was extremely grateful that the staff here took the time to explain to me the different stages my teeth were at and all my options to maximize my benefit (aka what can probably wait til next year). I'm about 2 months post-work (1 root canal, 1 cavity, 2 crowns). I was happy I could get it all done on one day, under one roof (they make the crowns in house). Buyer Beware! I was randomly assigned to this office with my new dental HMO, Blue Shield. I have seen dentists regularly my whole life and have no issues. I thought I was going in for a routine checkup and cleaning. But lo and behold, I'm presented with a treatment plan costing thousands. And as someone else mentioned, there was no cleaning!!! They ripped me off for $220 for scraping (which was no different to what any dental hygienist does while cleaning my teeth) I just cancelled my cleaning appointment which they wanted to charge $30 for (it should be covered under my HMO) and I am cancelling my dental insurance and going back to a PPO. Terrible experience! BTW, my old dentist, Sunset Cliffs Dental, is fantastic and ethical. I'm a retiree and was just trying to save some money -- my bad. My new insurance will be Aetna "Vital" which nets out to about $15 per month, and I'm going back to Sunset Cliffs Dental. read more

They worked with my state of financial hardship in order for me to get the treatment I needed, presenting multiple options of how to pay off what my insurance did not cover. They showed me in great detail what my x-rays meant for me, explained my insurance coverage thoroughly, and taught me how I can better my dental health; so far, I can see a huge difference in my teeth since my first treatment. Oh my goodness. I just had the worst experience at PB Smiles. I know that everyone has a unique experience and my friend who recommended it was shocked so know that. For me, this place was absolutely horrible. So to start off, the front desk is ok. Not super friendly but efficient. The person who does the x-rays was super charming and nice. I felt good about the experience with him. I waited 15 minutes for the dentist Dr. Gee. I started not feeling well when Dr. Gee decided to tell me all the things that were going wrong in my mouth that I had never been told about before. I felt like I was being bombarded with problem after problem when all I wanted was a teeth cleaning. He ended up telling me that he would have the front desk get in touch with my insurance to see what was covered. I waited and waited and got more and more anxious because it was just taking so long. I finally went to the front desk and they were less friendly and told me that they were running numbers and would be in shortly. I was like, "This is taking too long. I expected to be done in an hour." They told met that the first appointment was 1.5 hours. No one mentioned this when I made the appointment. When I said this, they said, "Well it was probably our call center". Excuses. So finally the receptionist came in and he told me what everything would cost. I said, "I just want my teeth cleaned." Then came the kicker, I wasn't getting my teeth cleaned!!! They never had any intention of cleaning my teeth!!!! They said I would have to come back! I had my initial dental appointment with PB smiles, and was recommended dental work that I had not previously been from my prior dentist of five years, before my insurance changed. As I'm not a dentist, or expert in dental care, I booked an appointment with my prior dentist, and paid out of pocket to either confirm or deny what I was told at PB Smiles. I was told that the treatment recommendation I received from PB smiles was not necessary, and was far overblown, and just a way for them to make money. I found the whole experience at PB Smiles to feel like it is being run to trick people out of their money for services they do not need. Want to do a special call out for Dr. Gee, who inflated my gum health scores significantly compared to my current dentist. Clearly he is in it for the money, and not for the care of his patients! Pushed additional services to the point it was uncomfortable. I've been going to a dentist every six months for pretty much my whole life (38M). Upon moving to PB, I went here and was told I needed a deep cleaning because there was plaque below the gum line. I've never been told this before and received primarily 2/3 on my periodontal charting during the visit. Being the first time there, I declined the service after multiple attempts and had to sign a waiver to document declining the service. The second time I went back, I was again told I needed the service, and it was clear notes had been made in my file to offer it. I again declined, signed the waiver and this time was asked to commit to getting the deep cleaning the next time I was in, which I agreed. Instead of going back, I went to a new dentist 6 months later, and a deep cleaning was not recommended. I explained my experience at PB Smiles (although I did not tell my new dentist the name of the practice), and they noted that nothing on my X-rays, scans or during my cleaning indicated the need for a deep cleaning or plaque beneath the gum lines. I understand doctors have different thresholds for recommending care, and maybe I have just been brushing better, but I found the manner in which it was recommended less than professional. Alternatively, the hygienist, staff and facilities were A+, and I received one of the most thorough cleanings of my life on my second visit. Kudos to them. The front desk staff was warm and friendly and immediately put me at ease upon check-in. The office was clean, with natural light, and there was no wait, as name was called a few moments after I sat down. The dental assistant who took my X-Rays and was kind, informative, and efficient - the entire process took less than 10 minutes. The X ray machines were newer and faster than those at previous dentists. She was empathetic when I shared my prior negative experience with another dentist office that left me dreading ever going to one again. My dentist was Dr. Samantha Schaller, and couldn't have been happier with her patient manner, intelligence, and the overall experience with her. She is extremely bright, thorough in her evaluation, informative yet concise with her treatment guidance, while being gentle and considerate of my anxiety from past experiences with other dentists. She was even able to fill a cavity she found on the spot. Another member of the staff came in after her examination to explain line item fees for each treatment after speaking with my insurance - he was clear, helpful and warm. I have found that this level of compassionate care and consideration for patient experience sadly is not typical at most dentists, but this team nails it. SCAM!!!! I read the reviews about this place being a scam but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and I wish I hadn't. My teeth are in good health (as the doctor stated to me). But they tried to sell me on a cleaning that's "not quite a deep clean but a step below" along with two other services. I told them if insurance didn't cover this then I'd just like a normal cleaning and the doctor then states "well this would be the only cleaning we'd do for you." Indicating they will not even do a normal cleaning for me. I was there for over an hour and left without my teeth being cleaned. Absolutely a scam, I doubt they let anyone get just a "normal cleaning." Beware. read more
