First, there was Dave's... a spectacular [hot] fried chicken shop. Then, I heard of Birdies through social media. The concepts are extremely similar, down to the menu structure and heat scale. I'm all for supporting small businesses, eating fried chicken, and writing reviews. After a week, the craving became unignorable, and I made the not too long Trek to give Birdies a go. Dave's left big shoes to fill, and as much as I was rooting for our bespectacled, anthropomorphic chicken friend, he left me disappointed. I ordered a Combo #3, with the tender as 'medium', and the sandwich as 'hot'. The fries were cooked very nicely, and they felt crisp and fresh. They were also lightly but nicely seasoned where I did not feel I was though I was crunching on salt, neither did I feel the need to add any. The sandwich was well assembled, stayed together, and the ingredients seemed to be in balance. Alas, it was the chicken that caused things to metaphorically fall apart. With the chicken, first things first: the portions are very respectable! Bearing in mind that the slider is essentially a tender in sandwich form, I feel as though they gave a tender-and-a-half for each! In terms of flavor is where it starts to struggle. I will give them points for effort, as the seasoning blend did have a whisper of piquancy, but it was too distant. Unlike Dave's, which brings buckets of *both* flavor and heat, Birdies brought a bucket of heat and a kids' beach pail of flavor. Credit where credit is due - the "hot" did have a teeny drizzle of honey that did wonders in helping elevate and bring out the spices that were there. However, other than slightly more heat, and sweetness from the honey, both the medium and hot were not well differentiated. Next, I found the chicken wasn't crisp. This could be because they are going for something spiced and fried, and not breaded. I'm not sure if that's their schtick, or if the kitchen had a big whoopsie-doodle. I will award benefit of the doubt on this one. Where I cannot be as forgiving is that I felt it was a little overcooked. The pieces of chicken were not tender and were lacking in moisture. I do want to award points for the wonderful sauce. Slightly tangy, very savory, and very flavorful. This is the one area where Birdies is neck and neck with Dave's, and dare I say maybe a little ahead. The service is prompt and friendly, and the location is clean, though a little plain and arguably gloomy. Other than a neon sign and a graffiti-style logo, the dominant colors are grey, black, and brown. A touch up of paint where the tables meet the walls would also help. There were two arcade games, but I did not partake. Thus, while I see what they're going for, the execution didn't work for me. The vibe isn't that important, and I can interpret the lack of breading as an intentional decision. However, the muted flavors (except heat), and lack of succulence does not inspire a return visit, especially when a competitor knocks in out of the park. read more

I'm really happy that I found that spot (thank God for Yelp recommendations, right). On a Friday afternoon I committed the sin of having my desert before my actual meal, and got ice cream from Hillards Chocolates, down the road in Easton. Anyhow, I had a craving for fried chicken and to my happy surprise, Birdies was just a few minute drive away so I headed right over. Birdies is located in a small plaza, it's a relatively small space with a few seats at a counter space, and a few tables lining the right hand wall. They also have an arcade machine, and a cork board with instant film photos of customers who have successfully eaten food with their hottest spice level (I believe you have to sign a waiver to order this). The menu is limited - seriously. There are 5 combo options to choose from for your meal, 4 sides, 4 drinks, and then your option of spice level which ranges from no spice to grim reaper. Although an employee told me the rub itself has spice in it, so be mindful of that! I wish I had gotten her name, but I was greeted by a very friendly woman when I walked in. She gave me time to choose what I wanted, and recommended I try their most popular item, which are the sliders. She also suggested I try the mild sauce. I really like spicy, but I'm glad she recommended the mild because anything spicier might have been too hot in all honesty. I ended up going with combo 3 - one tender, and one slider with fries. I also got a free pink lemonade with Yelp check-in. There were only a couple other customers in there when I entered, waiting on take out orders, so I easily grabbed a spot at the counter and waited for my order, which only took a few minutes to be ready. I loved it. I wish I could have eaten more, but I was fuller than I realized, after having two scoops of ice cream. The fries are crinkle cut fries. They were nice and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. And they're amazing when you dip them in the sauce (as someone else mentioned though, get another sauce because you will quickly run out if you get just one). The chicken was just as good. The tender comes atop a piece of white bread, which I didn't need, but the tender itself was nice and hot. I enjoyed the rub so much. I understand why the slider is their most popular item. The mixture of the chicken, coleslaw, and pickles make for a very pleasant texture, and it was so damn tasty. Thinking back on it, I do wish I'd gotten two sliders. The pink lemonade was also quite good. I always enjoy a lemonade that's just the right amount of tart and sweet. As I enjoyed my meal, the employee who had greeted me was talking to me in between taking calls and walk-in customers. She definitely gave the place a very welcoming and open atmosphere. I also appreciated her giving me a couple recommendations when I asked if there were any places in the area I could grab a drink. The next time I'm in the area, I'll definitely be stopping by here again. Tl;dr: Really tasty chicken (I highly recommend getting the sliders), but beware of spice levels, and very friendly staff. We went for a Combo #1 ($11.99) which features 3 tenders (not two like listed on the website), some crinkle fries, some bread and a side of their Birdies sauce. It was very filling and didn't sog out in the car which was nice. I ordered mine hot however, and couldn't feel a hint of heat which was a bummer. The staff was pretty friendly however there were no partitions, masks, or sanitizer to be found anywhere so bear that in mind. All in all this is a nice, unique addition to the area. This place has been on my radar for a little while now, and I finally found myself close enough to stop in. I'm so glad I did! My son and I were warmly greeted upon entering the restaurant by the friendly cashier. My son even commented after we left on how nice she was. I went with sweet tea for my drink and it was probably the best sweet tea that I've ever had. Not overly sweet and the tea had a nice flavor.
