We had 4 for lunch, with some having breakfast. It was a mixed reaction. My beet salad was good - and I will have that again. The biscuits and gravy were said to be very disappointing, too dense. The eggs were done perfectly and the bacon was crispy as desired. Finding vegan options is a struggle here. Interesting decor, think 50s diner in upscale beige. Minimal interaction from staff.

First time at Birdie's and certainly won't be our last! Very tasty food, and a large portion. Place is really cool on the inside. No wait on a Sunday morning which is rare for breakfast spots around here. But pricey as most of the Valpo downtown spots, but will definitely be returning.

Wow. What a gem. The service was incredible. I was greeted by several staff members when I walked in. Both the host and waitress were friendly and attentive. (The guest I was meeting for breakfast ran 30 minutes late, but they continued to check on me and chat each time they walked by while I was waiting.) The waitress recommended the avocado toast and it was beyond what I expected, with goat cheese, micro greens, and a balsamic glaze. It even came with two eggs to order (the perfect "medium," which is rare to find) and a side of hashbrowns. (I typically skipped the hashbrowns, but I couldn't stop eating these.) The coffee was on point. (I drink my coffee, black, so it has to be good.) And if the service and food weren't enough, the restaurant itself is gorgeous - so much attention to detail, clean, and plenty of dining space. I can't wait to come back at night and checkout Birdies Nextdoor for cocktails!

Cute little diner is downtown Valpo. Kind of hard to find with all the construction going on but I'm sure that'll clear up and one can park and walk and enjoy the area. Service was prompt and friendly. Quiet noise level, but I was there for breakfast and no rush, mid week.

I just love an old diner and it definitely has that vintage diner feel. We've been twice so far. First time we sat at the counter and the second a booth. Great service both times. It has classic diner food but also some specials. I had to get the swedish pancakes, which are basically crepes but they had lingonberry, which you can't find anywhere besides IKEA. Excellent.

The restaurant is very cute and the service was good. The food is fair. Not bad but not good either. There are better breakfasts in town.

A whole lotta greens, straight to the dome. I got the Kale Kraze Salad (quinoa, almonds,…read morecranberries, avocado and kale marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper). The salad came with a lemon garlic dressing on the side, which I didn't pour over the salad, but instead dipped forkfuls lightly into the cup. The salad was huge! There was no way I could finish it, and I didn't. But it was satisfying and made my body feel oh-so good, the way that a body feels good when eating whole foods. Roots Market Cafe has a lot of nourishing options here. I had a hard time choosing what to get, because they have so many tasty-sounding options. Most (all?) of the menu is either vegetarian or vegan, and they offer salads, wraps, smoothies, juices, and a selection of baked goods. This place is also a little market! You can find fresh produce here -- I saw sweet potatoes, broccoli, zucchini, ginger root, bananas, pineapple, berries and other things. They also sell alternative milks, mushroom coffee, organic eggs, kimchi, vegan snacks, and things I have never seen, like vegan marshmallows and vegan marshmallow cream. Who knew that existed? I got my salad to go, but they have a dining room where you can sit and stay a while. The dining room is separate from the market and ordering counter, and is located in an entirely different room.

The hummus was extremely watery--more like a soup consistency than the thick, creamy hummus I expected. It made it difficult to enjoy with the vegetables or chips. Speaking of the platter, for something labeled "party size," there were surprisingly very few vegetables included. Instead, it came with a large amount of chips. I was also expecting multigrain chips based on the photo but they were just plain tortilla chips, which wasn't what I had in mind. The Good Mojo juice itself tasted good, although it was served warm rather than chilled. Overall, for the amount I spent, I had much higher hopes for the quality and portion balance of what I was getting. It just didn't feel like the value matched the price.

It looked like reservations are highly recommended if you're planning to dine in. The ambience was elegant, calm, and intimate, and the service was hard-working, cheerful, and accommodating. Our large group ordered a variety of drinks, and not a single person was disappointed. I can personally vouch for the espresso martini and the Fashioned in Apple; both perfectly suited my tastes. For dessert, a friend ordered the chocolate mousse while I chose the Yule Log. The presentation was gorgeous and delicate, and of course, they were delicious. Now I just need to come back to try the food. The prices might sting a bit, but I have a feeling my taste buds will convince me it's worth it.

A quick tip: definitely call ahead for a reservation. The dining area is small but cozy, offering a really intimate vibe. The cocktails were fantastic, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. The food? Outstanding. You can tell the owner knows a thing or two about authentic flavors--probably from time spent traveling and living abroad. I really appreciated how true the dishes stayed to their roots. The semi-open kitchen was also a great touch--it shows they're confident in their craft and proud of what they're serving. I'm not usually big on desserts, but wow. Honestly, they might be more known for their desserts than the entrees, but both were amazing. What really pulls it all together is the service--attentive, thoughtful, and full of personality. That's what makes this place special.
