Breakfast Sandwich - Grilled on White
    Jim B.

My wife and I spent several days in Valparaiso to both visit her sister and introduce me to the town where both of them went to college. I had always wanted to go there and am very happy to say that I totally enjoyed the visit. While there, we ate most meals out. Susie's Cafe was the last of them. We ate our last breakfast before heading to Chicago to fly home here. My wife's brother is crazy about their cinnamon rolls, so we wanted to go there to tell him what he missed. We did indeed have a very large cinnamon roll that all of us shared. I was not as impressed with it as the others were. However, I will say that the icing they put on it was the best I've ever had on a cinnamon roll. For me, the piece of the roll I ate was a little too dry. I wasn't in a breakfast mood. That was probably a very bad thing. I opted to order off the lunch menu. As many of you probably know, meatloaf is my absolute favorite food. And, although I never expect it to be "fantastic" like my wife's at home, I often make the mistake of ordering it in restaurants. This was one of those mistakes. It was served as an open-faced sandwich on top of two very nice pieces of white bread and beside a healthy pile of mashed potatoes. The gravy on all of it was delicious! The side of canned corn was actually quite good, as well, after they doctored it with seasoning and butter. The meatloaf was not horrible. But, it wasn't good either. I wasn't in the kitchen to watch them make it, but it looked like they put everything in a blender, pureed it, poured it in a pan, and baked it. It was a very dense slab of brown stuff that actually looked like fried liver to me. It tasted okay, in an over processed kind of way. I would NEVER order it again. My venture into the meatloaf made me think that this is pretty much a microwave heat up kind of place, except for the made to order breakfasts and baked goods that other people are probably smart enough to gravitate towards. My wife's breakfast sandwich looked and, according to her, tasted great! My sister in law's omelet also looked really good. Would I go back here? Yes, but I would stick to the breakfast menu. The place is comfortable, clean, and the servers were very nice and attentive.

First time here and I'll be back! Greeted upon arrival with a cute coffee bar outside. everyone was so friendly including the patrons. Service is very attentive and quick. They have a veterans/senior menu which is nice. The regular menu is not overwhelming. The food was delicious and came out quick. Homemade bread made in house was soo good. And the oversized cinnamon rolls, just wow!

I was, admittedly, a little overwhelmed trying to pick a drink. She started a causal conversation of- what do you normally like? And we built from there! I ended up getting Voodoo, a peanut butter chocolate espresso latte and a plain bagel with cream cheese, OMG! I haven't stopped thinking about that drink. It was so smooth, just the right amount of sweet. Incredible! And the bagel was nice and crunchy on the outside and super soft in the middle. As someone who grew up a stones throw from NYC I can be a bagel snob. This was perfection. I sat there and worked for a while and at one point one of the baristas brought me over a cup of water. Said she noticed I had been working for a while and thought it might like some water. Which honestly was so touching because sometimes I get so hyper focused on what I'm doing I forgot to care for myself. That really meant a lot. This place is an absolute gem and if you're in the area- stop and check it out!

There are two doors and a step in between, and even I had to maneuver my way in and out. Just an FYI. The Press has a coffee shop inside of it. How nice! I didn't partake because the line was long, but the coffee smelled amazing. What a pleasant thing to be a bookstore that's also a coffee shop. There are some cozy couches and tables here and there among the stacks of books. I suppose you could take your cup of coffee and curl up on a couch or chair, because I saw one person doing that. But mostly: This is a bookstore, not so much a coffee shop or place to lounge. So I wouldn't visit with the intention of posting up and working for a few hours. This doesn't seem like that kind of place. Again, it's a bookstore first, a coffee shop second, a place to lounge third. Although The Press is a small bookstore, it has a nice children's section, with lots of books for kids and even graphic novels (my personal favorite). There is something for everyone here.

I loved the taste. I purchased a $17.00 key Lime, Lemon was out. I also bought a Lemon Slice, was not as good. The young lady with the noise piercing finished my sale. Within ear shot, I heard the lady behind me order a Chocolate Pie. The young lady says $8.00. I leave out the store confused as to why the person behind me charged only 1/2 of what I paid. I looked for a sale announcement, nothing indicating such. Went back in to inquire how this could happen at 6pm. She explained; because the pie was a day old....I asked her was this advertised anywhere as an I option? She looked at me like her hand was caught in the cookie jar and says "no". I left the store with the pie I paid full price; which I had no problem paying for, just wanted fairness. As a retired black elder, I just wanted to believe things could change. I guess Indiana just hasn't caught up yet. I probably will not spend my money there any longer.
