First time at this new restaurant. It used to be the best ice cream place!…read more The remodeling was done beautifully. When I walked in it smelled of home cooked meals and fresh ice-cream! This place did not disappoint and the menu items were all cajun dishes and smash burgers. The shrimp was exactly how my grandparents would make it, floury and crispy! I haven't had such a wonderful shrimp in a very very long time!! The crawfish etouffee coupled have used lots more flavor and seasoning. But that catfish was fried to perfection and you could tell they used the Louisiana style batter! This place was a order ahead type of service, kind of like dairy barn. I will definitely be visiting again.

Let me try to convince you to try it first. Near the Louisiana- Texas border this cafe is attached to a truck stop and casino. The inside has a country feel to it and the staff were more than friendly. Been to my share of these kind of places and they are hit / miss at best. This one is a hit for once. The pepper jack boudin egg roll is different but worth the try. We went simple with both grilled and fried chicken and surprisingly it was good. Prices are more than reasonable and overall it was a good experience as we were pressed for time to get back on the road. Like most greasy spoons the restrooms are not great but good enough for a quick wash up. Didn't have time to play the slots but since my Cajun is a bit rusty , wasn't sure where to cash out if I won.

Hi Cottons Downtown…read more I was in Lake Charles last week and, as always, stopped by Cotton's Downtown location for one of their double meat cheeseburgers. You cannot ask for anything better. Their patties are handmade rather than pre-pressed and frozen, which makes for a perfect burger. Of course, the trip is not complete without their fries and world-class onion rings. I have been coming here for the last four years, and the lady at the grill is always happy, energetic, and dedicated to providing great service. I cannot say enough good things about this place. If you are ever in downtown Lake Charles, it is a must-stop. Best, MM

My boyfriend and I had date night at Augustine, last night!…read more This was both of our first times in the restaurant since they have transformed it from its previous restaurant. We were both immediately impressed with the transformation! It was dark and moody but the lamps were still bright enough to read the menu. It was elegant but still comfortable enough that we weren't afraid to have conversation (some restaurants we have visited with similar ambiance makes you feel like you have to be quiet, Augustine was not like this which we appreciated). We ordered drinks, me a thyme sour; delicious and refreshing, him a sweet tea. We were given the freshest, fluffiest, softest bread with a surprising no herb butter. We both gave it a 9/10 We ordered the crab cake appetizer. We are crab cake snobs so it was only right we did. We both instantly agreed that these were the best crab cakes we have had in a restaurant setting by far! They were full of actual crab meat, lightly fried with what I believe were bread crumbs and not a thick flour batter. The best way to do it in my opinion. They came with the tastiest, citrus remoulade sauce. I could've put that sauce on everything. We both also gave these a 9/10 only because as much as we loved the sauce they drowned our cakes in it and we had to scrape some off. For our entrees we ordered the fish Augustine and the duck breast. Normally cooked medium we asked that our duck be cooked medium rare (that's how we like it) and the kitchen knocked it out the park! Again, the best duck breast we have had in a restaurant setting to date (even better than the duck breast we had a Michelin star restaurant for my birthday previously ). They paired it with the crispiest soft roasted potatoes and a blackberry sauce that was perfect in my opinion. I gave this a 10/10 he gave it a 9/10..-1 for no reason. The fish Augustine good but not great especially compared to the duck dish. The fish, grouper was cooked perfectly in my opinion and was soft and flaky however it lacked flavor. It comes with a few shrimp that are listed as gulf shrimp but these shrimp immediately tasted imported to me..rubbery and the taste of freezer burn. The asparagus were my favorite part of the dish only because they tasted normal to me. The sauce on the bottom was good but I found myself dredging the fish and asparagus through it in order to get some kind of flavor in my mouth which is disappointing. We both rated this a 5/10 shrimp being a 1/10. There was a little hiccup in the kitchen with our courses that resulted in us waiting longer than average for our entrees but our server, Corey, more than made up for it with dessert! We got a regular crème brûlée and a strawberry champagne layered cake. Both desserts were exceptional and the perfect ending to our date night. Overall we gave our experience a solid 8/10 and will definitely be back even if it is just for the duck breast

It's a pretty simple place, you place your order at the counter and they bring it to the table, the fountain drinks are self-serve. There were a few customers already seated but our food arrived within a reasonable time and was still hot - we all order burgers and crinkle fries, I choose the Mad Dog Burger, easily a 1/2 pound of fresh beef, jalapeño mayo, fresh cut jalapeños and pepper-jack cheese with pickles, onions, tomatoes and shredded lettuce on a toasted bun - this was definitely a delicious hand crafted burger and we all three ate all of the burgers and crispy fries. The staff here is extremely friendly and went above and beyond to ensure everything was as we ordered it and that we were all happy with our lunch.
